"Don't look now, but that guy at the bar is totally checking you out."
I immediately turned to look and Gia grabbed hold of my elbow and held me in place.
"I said not to look now." She hissed at me.
I winced. "Sorry sorry. What guy?"
"He's wearing black, at seven o'clock. I can't really see his face, but I can see his watch and it is definitely expensive." She giggled, head bobbing to the beat of the music pulsing from hidden speakers.
I rolled my eyes at her. Georgia and I had been best friends long before we were even born. I know you don't think it's possible, but let me paint you a picture of the scenario. Gia's mum and mine had been best friends who had met two best friends, Gia's dad and mine and got married within a month of each other. I was only six days younger than her, and we had practically grown up in the same house. Different houses sharing a single fence. Need I say more?
We were attached at the hip and she was my sister in everyway that mattered.
It didn't matter that we looked nothing alike. We were almost the same height, me an inch or two more than her and roughly the same size, but there were no more physical similarities. My hair was a deep, super curly red while hers was honey blonde and straight as an arrow. I had golden brown eyes which someone had once described as whiskey colored while hers were a vivid gemstone green. I had freckles across the bridge of my nose and a pale complexion. Gia was all tanned. She also had all the athletic genes in our duo, a member of the cheer squad and the tennis club.
It was Gia's birthday today and we'd hit one of the less famous clubs to celebrate. Neither of us was twenty one yet, and our fake IDs would only help us if someone we knew didn't recognize us, hence the need for a less popular club.
"You can't know his watch is expensive from way over here." I argued.
She rolled her well made-up eyes at me this time around. "Of course I can. There's barely any lights on where he's sitting and I can see it glow."
"That means nothing." I pointed out.
"Oh my God, don't ruin my birthday fun with all your logic." She groaned. "Let's switch places."
"No. You don't even know if it's me he's actually looking at. Could be you."
"I'd know if a man was looking at me." She said. "Take it from me, I'm older and wiser."
I laughed. "With all of six days and all the manly experience you got from your highschool boyfriend?"
She shrugged. "Beats only knowing what a man looks like from biology class."
"Hey." I protested.
"Sorry sorry. We aren't here to talk about men. Ew. We're here to have fun." She whooped. "It's my freaking birthday."
"Yes. It is." In a few days, we'll be celebrating my twentieth birthday in a decidedly different way. Gia was the party girl of our duo and I always indulged her. Dressing up and wearing ankle breaking heels for a night out. She was also down to stay indoors with me binge watching Netflix when I wanted.
"Let's do shots." She suggested.
I raised a brow at her. "What do you know about shots? We don't know anybody out here. We can't afford to get drunk. Who'll make sure we get home safely?"
"You're killing all my buzz. See, this is why I don't take you anywhere. I'm going to get us two tiny glasses and we're going to drink it and have fun. It's one glass per person, we'll be fine, I promise."
"Alright." I shouted over the music. "Straight to the bar and back, okay? No distractions." I warned.
"Yes, mum." She giggled before strutting away. My best friend was a bombshell. She knew it and so did the men around who couldn't keep their eyes off her as she walked away. She was in a form fitting maroon mini dress that hugged all her curves and had a scooped back and neckline. Her long legs were well accentuated in the black killer heels she had on. I was sure the man at the bar had had his eyes on her too. I was beautiful, but no where near Gia's class, and I honestly didn't mind it. I would be overwhelmed if I got the kind of attention that Gia's presence attracted. Thankfully, she hadn't let the attention go to her head, she was nice and polite to everyone.
A song I liked came on and I closed my eyes and began to sway to the music, feeling the rythym moving through me. I wasn't much of a dancer, but I enjoyed it. I liked the way it made me feel bold and powerful, like the whole world had ceased to exist around me and I could just do whatever I want.
I opened my eyes when I suddenly felt a presence behind me, whirling around in panic as my eyes met with intense grey orbs. I sucked in a breath at the gorgeous man standing before me. I didn't even know that real people could look like this. Men like this only existed in GQ magazines after hours of careful make up and photo edits. The man stood inches above six feet, with impossibly broad shoulders. The flashing lights overhead revealed bits and suggestions of him till I could join the full image together.
Dark hair, grey eyes, a five o'clock shadow covering his razor sharp jawline, a black shirt with rolled up sleeves and black pants. It was when I looked at his wrist and saw the huge, expensive looking watch that I realized who the man was. It was my mystery admirer from the bar.
"Hello." He said in a deep voice that rippled through me more effectively than the club music ever could.
I realized I had been staring and had completely snubbed him moments too late.
"Uhh." I stammered. "Hey."
"Do you want to dance?" He was standing super close to me, his head bent to breathe his words directly into my ear. It was an effective method to avoid having to shout to be heard over the music, but I couldn't help but feel that he also did it for another reason.
"Yes." I replied.
The words were barely out of my mouth before one of his big hands settled on my hip and pulled me closer till we were just a hairsbreadth away. He smelled like expensive cologne and pinewood. It was earthy and refreshing. Especially as I was constantly surrounded by college boys who thought drowning themselves and choking everybody around them in cheap, cloying perfume was appealing.
The man staring down at me with singular focus was entirely too much man for me. Nothing about him was boy. He looked like he could eat me for breakfast and I wondered what madness had possessed me to say yes to dancing with him.
"You're thinking too much. I can see the wheels turning in your head." He flashed a perfect set of teeth at me. "What's your name?"
"Lily." I lied.
His eyes narrowed as if he could tell I was lying before twirling me around and pressing me into his chest till we were swaying together to the music, my back to his chest. The music immediately changed, the pop music switching to a more sensual one.
I gasped as his hands slid down to my thighs and then up till one was on my hip and the other just underneath the hem of my dress.
"Nice to meet you, Lily. I'm Luc." He said into my ear causing goosebumps to envelop my skin. Christ Almighty, what was this guy doing to me?
"Don't think too much about it. Sink into the music." He coaxed in that dark, silky voice.
My eyes closed and my head fell backward in surrender as my body began to undulate to the beat. I felt sexy and free, like someone had just unlocked the doors to my cage and I was suddenly free to fly and roam the sky.
"Good girl." He cooed.
I didn't know who this man was or if his name was really Luc, but he seemed to have a direct link to parts of me that I had never even knew existed. His every word and every touch brought me to life and set me on fire at the same time. I felt feverish with his attention and praise. Sweat dotted my body as we both moved against each other, like the rest of the world outside our little bubble didn't exist.
I could feel his hardness pressing insistently against my bottom and it excited me.
"I've been watching you all night."
"Oh. Have you?"
"Yes. You're so fucking beautiful. I wouldn't have been able to look away even if I had tried." He confessed.
My heart beat an unsteady rythym. "Did you try?"
"No." He said, the band on my hip becoming tighter. "Do you want to get out of here?"
I didn't hesitate. "Yes."
"No, you're not." The spell Luc had cast over me fell away at Gia's voice. I blinked open and stepped away from him with a horrified gasp. Gia was standing in front of us, hands crossed and giving Luc a suspicious look. I took another step away from him and turned to look at him. I couldn't believe I had been ready to follow this man back to his room without a second thought. How stupid was I? This was exactly how girls got trafficked, or worse, chopped into pieces by some attractive serial killer.
"Who the hell are you?" Gia glared at him.
"I'm Luc." He dug a hand into the pocket of his pants and dug out a wallet, never taking his eyes off me the whole time. I couldn't look away either, my senses still a little clouded by his domineering aura.
"And what do you want with my best friend, Luc?"
"A lot." He said confidently, undeterred by Gia's acidic tone. He handed her what I assumed was his ID card.
"This could be a fake." She spared it a cursory glance.
"Gia!" I snapped, embarrassed at her acting like my parent.
"I'm sorry M-"
"Lily." I turned my head to mouth at her quickly.
She made a face. "I'm sorry, Lily, I'm just trying to look out for you." She said before turning back to Luc. "I'm going to hold on to this." She waved the card in the air. "And we have a hotel room, so don't even think of taking her to some strange room and chopping her into bits. That is, if you still want to go with him?" She raised a brow at me.
I bit my lip, unsure suddenly of the wiseness of going back to the hotel with a strange man. The hottest, strange man I had ever and might ever meet in my life though. I peeked up at him and saw that his sole focus was still on me. I shivered at the look in his eyes. It was a look that clearly said that he was going to make me scream and beg.
And I wanted all of those things.
I wanted my first time to be with Luc.
"Yes. I do. Do you mind that I'm ditching you?"
"Nah. It's cool. Some of the girls are here so I'm just gonna join them. Have fun!" She waved, before narrowing her eyes at Luc and strutting away.
I turned back to Luc.
"Shall we?" He grinned.
"Yes." I licked my lips in anticipation. I didn't know if I was crazy for doing this, but I was definitely going through with it.
It was Monday morning, more than twenty four hours since my amazing night with Luc. True to the dark promise in his eyes, he had blown my mind. I had screamed till I had lost my voice. The only roadblock we had encountered during the night was when he found out I had been a virgin, but luckily, I was able to reassure him that I hadn't been keeping my virginity for any mysterious special person and I was more than ready to lose it to him.
And boy had I lost it.
I had also lost my mind and my senses that night, both burned to ashes with the heat of our passion. Gia had once tried to describe what an explosive orgasm felt like to me and I had thought she had been exaggerating for my benefit.
With Luc, it had been more than explosive. The best word I could use to describe it was combustive. I had passed out afterwards.
Gia had snuck into the room by past two and we had both snuck out. I had been sad to leave Luc alone in bed, but I knew it was just a one night stand and I'd probably never see him again. It was better how it ended than to face an awkward morning after. What Luc and I had was an excessive amount of chemistry and we had spent the night getting drunk on each other, that had to be enough for me.
That's what I told myself at least.
I didn't tell Gia that I had spent the whole of Sunday thinking of Luc. That was plain pathetic and I refused to be that girl. The one who attached feelings to casual sex and complicated a simple situation. I was a big girl and I could handle a one night stand.
I took a seat in my preferred sitting area, closer to the front but not one of the first four seats and dead center. I had explained to Gia severally how that position was the prime seating center for both the classroom and the cinema to which she always replied that only nerds sat on the first six rows.
Unfortunately for her, I had won our coin toss on the first day of school so she was stuck sitting with me.
I dropped my bag on the seat to my right to reserve it for Gia.
The class was beginning to fill up when my phone suddenly buzzed. I looked down at it in confusion. Why the hell was Gia calling me this close to class? And where was she?
"Hello..."
"Maddie. You have to get out of there now." She cut me off in a hurry.
"Uhm. What is this? If you don't want to seat here, you don't have to." I informed her.
"You don't understand. Look, I'm a few tables behind you. Can you just move over here please? I can't explain out loud."
I turned and spotted her four rows behind her practically slouched in her chair, a face cap pulled low over her forehead. She caught my eye and began to wave frantically at me. Honestly, Gia was acting a little crazy this morning.
We had both gotten to school together earlier and I had left her for a minute while she went to buy the sugary concoction she called coffee and flirt with the barista at the coffee shop, and now this.
"What are you up to now?" I asked over the phone.
"Ugh. Just trust me for once and come over here. You're so stubborn."
"You're lucky I love you, but I'm never sitting back there with you again." I grinned as I began to pack up my bags.
"Hurry." She hung up.
As I made to stand up, my pen fell to the floor and rolled a distance away. I went down to my knees to reach for it from under the table it had slipped under.
"Good morning and welcome to English literature."
I froze. That voice. It couldn't be. No, it was impossible. It was just my imagination. A product of thinking so much about him.
"If you're quite done crawling around, can you get seated." He suddenly said. I felt all eyes on me as I dusted my knees and rose to my feet. My eyes clashed with too familiar grey ones and all the blood in my body drained, leaving me frozen as I stared in horror at Luc.
"Are you part of this class, miss..."
"Lane." I croaked. "Ye- yes. I- uh- I mean I'm part of this class."
"Then either sit down or walk out of this class, you're disrupting my class." He glared.
I dropped down to my seat in a daze.
"I'm professor Lucian Buford and I'll be teaching you English literature. There are very few rules in this class, but the major one you'll need to know is sit down, shut up unless you're answering a question and don't waste everyone's fucking time. If you're not ready to be here, you don't need to be. Is that clear?"
My phone pinging with a text was the only sound heard after his ominous question. All eyes including the dark, stormy eyes of Lu- I mean- professor Buford swung to me.
I swallowed and immediately turned my volume all the way down.
Holy shit.
"Miss Lane, I'll give you first day grace, but that's all I'm willing to tolerate. Is that clear?"
I nodded hurriedly.
"I asked you a question."
"Yes, sir. Clear, sir."
He turned to the board behind him giving me the opportunity to peek at my phone, there was a text from Gia, a simple "HOLY SHIT!!!!"
What were the odds? That my one night stand that was supposed to be uncomplicated and forgotten had now turned into one big, fat mess. It wasn't enough for me to just run into him in public. He had to be my new professor too and the worst part was, he seemed to hate me.
