Amira faces a lot of challenges growing up as a child while in her father's house. The torture, abuse, and trauma she faces in thy house make her get pregnant with Oscar, just to be free from her stepmom's narcissistic behavior, and people's wrong impressions made her leave a life of visioness and meaningless that led to her divorce.
Amira gives in to people's wrong impressions, which leads to her divorce because people tend to exhibit what they call a progression bias an irresistible inclination that made her push forward with a romantic relationship, regardless of red flags and abuse.
With all her experiences, and all the torture she received from Sara her stepmom. She wouldn't want to face the same trauma in her marriage.
Previously, before Amira walked out of her engagement party. She and her boyfriend, Allen often plan their futures together. They discussed everything from their wedding plans to how the proposal should go. But after her first public proposal to her ex-husband, Oscar. She was terrified by the thought of having another public proposal, And she walked out of her engagement party after learning her fiance had planned one for her, Despite their plans not to surprise her with a public proposal.
When Amira's birthday celebrations rolled around. She figured out something was up, as they planned to meet at a restaurant for her birthday, unknowing to her that her fiance had planned to pop the question in front of everyone in the restaurant.
"Baby, it is true what am hearing? But I told you I don't want a public engagement. Why do this to me?" She lamented.
"Yea baby, I just wanna surprised you." He retorted without wasting time.
The shocking tale worsened her fears when her boyfriend told her he'd reserved the entire restaurant for 85 people. Amira was stunned, as she felt betrayed when people start pouring in.
"This wasn't our plans baby. Am sorry, I can't, but if you promised not to propose in front of everyone here, I will." Amira affirmed as she whispered into her boyfriend ear hastily, with tears rolling down her eyes.
"I understand baby, but I told some people, and those words got around and they were now expecting a grand gesture proposal. I gat no choice, otherwise, I wouldn't have wasted everyone's time and money coordinating and getting them down here for us." He said while frowning.
Amira was shocked and lost for words, as they both agreed never to have a public proposal. She became disturbed as they stood motionless looking at each other.
"Don't push me, baby. Because If you insist on doing this in this way that made me uncomfortable, I gat no choice." She reacted immediately while tears rolled down her eyes.
"I understand you completely now. But you're ungrateful because we both know you could easily say yes to my proposal. After all, any other woman would kill for a boyfriend, who would go through the toughest of ways to make a grand gesture proposal." He said while pouting and Amira walk out of the restaurant with a smirk on her face.
The shocking tale came to light when Amira called her childhood friend Charlotte explaining why she walked out of her engagement party, leaving her boyfriend surrounded by their family and friends. And people have been left stunned by her decision not to have a public proposal.
"Good evening Amira." Olivia saluted as she came to visit Amira to convey her situation, as she believed, Amira gats a better experience when it comes to marriage and divorce.
Amira was sitting on the balcony late evening taking some fresh air, reviving her perception when a knock came hard on the door, and before she could answer it was pushed open.
Amira was surprised to see Olivia in her house late evening.
"Wow, it's nice to see you again dear. Please come in" She gestured to her to come in.
Amira and Olivia live in a neighborhood right from a child. They attended the same school growing up as a child.
"I believe I had a related issue just like yours Amira. I wanna know why you walked out of your engagement party mid-last year and some of the experience you have when it comes to marriage and divorce?" Olivia asks abruptly and her face soars.
Amira was stunned but not as stunned as you may think because everyone knows about her stories. The damage that leads to her divorce.
Walking away from her engagement party meant exchanging the delights of a bride for the embarrassment of a deserter. Amira felt that It was better to walk away from her engagement party than to be abused and humiliated in front of everyone.
Amira sighed and turned to face her while smiling.....
"Whatever is the reason that makes you not to attend your proposal occasion. Whatever the reason may be, belief is the best, and don't leave a life of regret. If you want to be happy, do not dwell in the past, do not worry about the future, focus on living fully in the present" Amira reacted and Olivia smiled.
"I never attended my engagement party. I love my fiance and believe he's the one God has bestowed on me, but he goes against my choice." Olivia affirmed.
Amira signed hastily as a series of contemplation ran through her head.
"I don't wanna face any challenges in my marriage. Because my fiance said I have to tender a public apology before he could accept and chill out again with my preference." Olivia said instead of smiling, she was smirking.
Amira sigh hurriedly and flipped her hair over her shoulder.
"I believe we have some similarities, but I wouldn't want you to go through my experiences." Amira gestured and Olivia snickered and flipped her hair over her shoulder.
Olivia is a young and desperate girl who dreamed of getting married to her boyfriend, but she was adamant and skeptical, as she felt her choices in the marriage won't be accepted by her boyfriend. And she felt, she wouldn't tolerate that which may lead to divorce after marriage, and she skipped her engagement party and left her boyfriend humiliated.
But Olivia had every intention of saying yes to her boyfriend's proposal, but she doesn't like being put on the spot or being made to feel obligated to say yes. And she made it clear to her fiance that she would hate a public proposal. As the very idea gives her hives and makes her queasy with anxiety, as she never wants a public proposal.
While Amira was scared of having another public proposal with Allen, as the reason why she walk out of her engagement party. Because she felt she won't be able to face such a proposal after her first experience.
Amira and Olivia had similar incidents. Amira walked out of her engagement party, while Olivia ignored her public proposal. And her fiance said he won't consider proposing again until she makes an apology to his family and friends for embarrassing him and he promises to chill out about her preference in the future if she concurs. But Olivia hate it because she felt her fiance knew she would have preferred something more private and romantic just as planned than a public proposal.
It becomes wary to Olivia and when she seak for advice from friends, some suggested she should end the relationship following the argument. While some said, she should rethink the marriage proposal because the marriage should be about her, but he's making it about himself. "He made a decision to propose to you in a way he knew would make you miserable, then tried to manipulate you into it. Now, he's punishing you for not doing it."
Another of her colleagues said. "Do you really want to marry a guy who completely disregarded what you wanted and now blames you for his embarrassment?"
Olivia was traumatized by all this and she couldn't contemplate not knowing what to do. As the reason why she visited Amira, as they both have similar experiences.
"Am gonna tell you something about my best friend Freya. She ignored my text messages 3 hours before her wedding, 6 months ago. She's currently facing traumatic abuse from her partner, and she filed for divorce 2weeks ago, and the husband wasn't ready to sign the divorce papers.
As Amira walks out of her engagement party. A few days later, Amira was tilting back a cocktail to slurp the trace of whiskey in midtown Manhattan, seated in leather chairs at a bar decorated like the parlor of a landed nobleman, all rich wood and pastoral oil paintings. And Charlotte, Amira's best friend walked in telling her, she had no interest in marrying her fiancé, and her wedding is in a month.
Charlotte, Amira's childhood, friend was preparing seriously for her wedding. Amira froze in surprise as she once told her in a bar she ain't interested in getting married to her abusive fiance.
"Am surprised you gonna married to him after all you said?" Amira ask.
Charlotte sighed, and smile hastily, and threw her hair over her shoulder without mumbling a word. Charlotte caught the waiter's eye and twirled her finger and her face gleaming.
"The whole relationship is a joke, I care about him a lot, but we fight constantly." Charlotte announced instead of smirking she was smiling.
"He says he loves me. But on some level when we argue. The trauma is always on me, making a gesture of my past. He must know this isn't happily ever after." Charlotte acknowledged.
"Are you going to call it off?" Amira asks again while smiling.
"It's too late to call it off. It would destroy him totally. The invitations have gone viral, and a lot of meaningful and distinguished men and women are invited from different countries. His whole family has booked flights already from Australia to Alabama. I just have to do it. I can't turn it down now." Charlotte retorted. As she was happy and she can't wait for the day to come.
Amira sighed hastily and folded her arms. She stare at her face for evidence that she was joking. But she found none, and her concern swelled.
"You need to cut this off now dear. You're going to leave him someday, and that'll be way too much on you." Amira said and Charlotte froze at her squeezing her face so irritating.
"Honestly speaking, it'll be easier then. The stakes aren't that high. If we can't find a way to make it work after marriage, we can always just get divorced." Charlotte proclaimed with a lot of excitement.
Amira was flabbergasted and lost for words.
She was amazed because, Charlotte knows everything she went through at the hands of her narcissist stepmother, how she deliberately abuse her without any wrongdoing, which makes her have a relationship with Oscar that lead to her divorce after giving birth to a baby girl. She was living in the house of abusive for more than 15 years before she met Oscar.
Amira and Charlotte had been friends since high school. They had a lot of mutual understanding, and gossip moved swiftly.
Perhaps, Charlotte saw meeting Amira as a preview of her fate, if she walk away from her fiance. And she felt her fate was slightly manic, 10 pounds heavier than usual, and glugging a dicey amount of whisky, as they keep articulating.
"Are you glad you called it off? I mean your engagement party, and your divorced with Oscar?" Charlotte ask and stare at Amira meaningfully and she gave her a funny smile.
Immediately, Amira froze in surprise and there was a pause.
A few minutes into their discussion, as they keep articulating, the waiter dropped off their third round of whisky, as Charlotte asked Amira if she was happy walking out of her engagement party and her divorce from her ex-husband Oscar.
Amira's decision to end a floundering relationship is far from straightforward. Ever since then people had been asking her whether she love the idea of walking out of her engagement party as if a simple "yes" or "no" will resolve the whole matter, but Amira knew the truth is always more complicated. As she cares about her ex-husband Oscar even after the divorce.
Amira and Oscar lived together after marriage, they shared intimacies and banalities routines, and chores. Amira's family, friends, and co-workers knew Oscar and loved him as the one who rescued her from the hands of her abusive stepmother. They had come to think of them as a unit, and their relationship was integral to Amira's social identity when she gave birth to her daughter after her wedding.
Amira walked out of her engagement party meaning exchanging the delights of a bride for the embarrassment of a deserter not to mention enduring the intense pain of a breakup, and she felt miserable starting all over from scratch.
When she ended her relationship with Oscar. Amira disappointed her own family by appearing to turn away from a certain kind of life.
Amira was on the brink of 23 years of age when she was emotionally shattered, and facing the prospect of beginning again after all the abusive words from her stepmother and the trauma encircling her after her divorce.
She experienced the bizarre power of unmet expectations that lead to her divorce. Those arbitrary fatbergs within her, and she couldn't promise herself to love again and face endless uncertainty.
Amira gave out a loud sighing and turn to face Charlotte.
"Yes. I'm glad I cut it off. I should have done it earlier. I wasted too much of everyone's time as the reasons why they discriminate and victimize my decision." Amira finally replied to Charlotte's question and she was astounded, froze in her cleverness.
"I'm not against your decision Amira. Because I know all you went through in your father's house. I believe it's the reason why you never want to stay in an abusive relationship." Charlotte confessed instead of smiling she was smirking.
They parted after their conversation at the bar. A few weeks later. Amira heard that Charlotte was engaged and got married to her narcissist fiance and relinquished her happiness and went ahead and married an abusive man. Ever since then, they had fallen out of touch. As she never called or reply Amira's text messages ever since she got married.
"Where is that useless child Amira?" A resounding roar from the woman she called her stepmother. Had Amira shivering in fright while in the kitchen washing the dishes. She could eat the leftover as her stepmom was always abusive and starving her even after cooking.
Sara, Amira's stepmother has been psychologically abusive, to Amira. She has never missed an opportunity to denigrate, insult, belittle, shame, and otherwise.
"I'm here ma." She quickly rushes down to meet her stepmom.
"What keep you so long? Didn't you hear your name?" Sara asked anguishedly.
"I was watching the dishes when you called ma." Amira replied with a smile on her face.
Anything that triggers Amira, not smiling back in the way her stepmom wants her to smile. She has herself to blame.
"You have 5 minutes to finish those dishes or else, you have yourself to blame." She said abruptly with a wicked smirk on her face.
Amira quickly ran to the kitchen before any more insults, as she was always abused by her stepmother, pouring all kinds of insults on her without a single fault. Yet, she just as quickly flips around her acting normal, trying to hug her and pretend she didn't crush her soul and if she doesn't play along as a happy dutiful stepchild she will quickly suffer even more abuse and have herself to blame.
The disproportionate amount of this abuse has landed on Amira. She has been called everything from stupid to a worthless waste of a child since her childhood.
All because her mother had died while giving birth to her. Was it her fault? She didn't ask to be born, neither was she happy that her mother choose to leave her behind. She would have taken her to wherever she was going. But she didn't ask for all this!
"Oh my God, what happened? Why is the Sandwich not enough?" Sara her step-mom asks anguishedly the moment Mr. Ben Amira's father walked in.
Amira choked down in shock, as the question rang a bell in her head. She stood motionless not knowing what to say, because she had demanded money from Sara her stepmother, to go to the closest store to get more Sandwich, but her step-mom had refused to give her money. And left her no choice but to manage the available one, since the Sandwich is just for her father. And she thought it will be enough for her father for that faithful night since Sara had refused to give her money.
"Emm, emm." Amira uttered without mumbling a word. Mr. Ben, Amira's father was looking at her. Amira stood not knowing what to say because her stepmother was looking at her repulsing knowing fully well Amira did ask her for money for more Sandwich.
"look at her, stupid girl. She can't even talk about what happened to the money I gave to her." Sara castigated her in front of her dad, lying against an innocent girl just because she has no mother.
"Speak up, before I lose my temper and descend on you." Mr. Ben Amira's dad, flared up in anger while slamming his palms against the wall. He looks so angry because the Sandwich won't be enough for him and the time is late to go out for more Sandwiches. It's already 11 pm at the time.
Amira scantily robs the edge of her nose, biting her lower lips not knowing what to say, and when she looks at Sara, her step-mom. She could see her smiling, rejoicing from her current situation because Sara knew she could not, and will never say a word to her father that she asked for money from her for more Sandwich.
Sara was the cause of everything, but that's one of her ways to make the poor innocent girl suffer at the hand of her biological father who doesn't care about Amira's happiness or try to know everything from the daughter.
Amira sighed in as she knew what is about to happen to her. She jumped in fright, and take a wary step back. Her father, Mr. Ben's angry voice could knock anything off the ground. She felt her heart leaps from her soul, as she was frightened, and she couldn't say a word but stammered in her dull voice.
And rolled her eyes inwardly as her eyes turn red in confusion and she felt alone before her father and stepmother.
How Sara managed to lie against Amira for her dad to hate her the more, was something she couldn't figure out, while her eyes were wetting already. It was unimaginable as she stood motionless.
Just in a fraction of a second. A loud and reverberating slap land on Amira's cheek, which had her see a star in her eyes, and she found herself on the floor. And Sara her stepmother looks happier seeing Amira being bitten by her father without any wrongdoing. She flipped her hair across her shoulder with so much excitement seeing her in pain.
Tears instantly began to flow freely from her eyes as she held on to her cheek while rolling on the floor bitterly.
The slap from her father is so fatal that it did affect her ears drum.
"What did you buy with the money she gave to you? You're such a useless daughter. You should've died together with your mother." Mr. Ben sparked in a loud voice. And Sara was rejoicing seeing Amira in pain.
"Please my love, it's enough. Let her be. You'd kill her when you noticed all the wrong things she had been doing in this house." Sara castigated her the more as she decides to stop her husband with more lies after being satisfied seeing her weeping in pain.
Sara was just bluffing, proving to her husband that she was a good stepmother by stepping in.
"Let her die if that's what it takes." Mr. Ben sparked and they left her on the cool wetted floor.
Amira panted and moaned in pain as no one is there to consolidate her, and she was very weak that she couldn't even cry or share any more tears, but groan in excruciating pain.
Mr. Ben's reaction was too much on his daughter. Even after hitting her so badly, they left her in the cold wetted corridor. All he cared about was teaching that unfortunate child of his a lesson without confirming the appropriate truth from the daughter.
Amira became traumatized with all kinds of worries, even when she did nothing. Sara her stepmother will always look for a way to humiliate, embarrass, condemned, and blamed her in one way or the other. As she, once told her during a party that she wished, her dad never gave birth to her because she is an ugly stain that shouldn't be seen in public.
Despite her excellent grades in school, great sociability. Cooking, cleaning, and being obedient, but still. Amira was still a waste of oxygen and a burden and never as good as other people's children. And she always makes a way to scare her to death and trigger an outburst of insults and be reminded that she was fed and sheltered so Amira should be grateful to have a good stepmother like she because if Amira stepped out of line she would be pushed out into the street. And Amira was 16years at the time.
However, she managed to put herself together knowing fully that her father is been controlled by her stepmother and if she mislay, she will be sent out to the streets and she gat nowhere to go. She didn't want to delay any seconds at all, as that might incur more discipline on her.
She swallowed hard secretly and she manage to put herself together and walked straight into her room with no bed on it. She sobbed all true out the night.
Amira suffered several pains and humiliation from her stepmother and Mr. Ben Amira's dad was blind to see the truth, all because he blame Amira for the death of his wife while giving birth to her. Ans he never cared about her well-been or give in to her complaint.
The last time Amira was sick as a teenager, she told her dad she felt unwell and the man's response was "good, I hope it gets worse. if you die you'll learn to not leave the house and wander around like a cheap, stupid w***e."
Amira was surprised and lost in words. Though, She had wanted to run out of the house but Amira had nowhere to run to except her only friend Charlotte which it impossible for her to stay with Charlotte's household.
Things became more difficult for her as time goes by. Tears become her daily food because there's not a day Sara won't make her feel pain and the memories of her mother's death giving birth to her. To this day, these memories bring her to tears and have her terrified of even having her own children when she's of age.
