Chapter 1 Chap 1

Cielo POV.

Every sole I pass lowers their head and refuses to make eye contact with me. I can not hold it against them. I tend to make them sweat after a well-earned reputation. Every pore on my body oozes confidence, making even the most powerful alpha hesitate in my presence. The majority of those present are surprised by my presence. I am rarely here and rarely seen lately.

When I open the double wooden doors, they make a loud banging noise, which irritates me. I prefer to make an unannounced appearance. This way, after learning the reason for my request, I can leave unnoticed. Since the day I turned eighteen, it is always been the same. I will never get over that day.

Three of the five men seated at the table flinch. My father and a visitor appear unconcerned. My father raises his head, his probing ocher eyes praising me.

He shook his head, his pink lips twitching in a small smile, his silver ringlets bouncing in delight.

"You have got to fix that door." While my brother looks at me, I tell him, enjoying his reaction. My brother fixes me with a hard stare in his sapphire eyes, his sharp face neutral. My presence appears to have irritated Xander. I guess he does not like it when I make him nervous around our guest.

My father motions for me to take the seat next to my brother that is currently empty. This puts me in the middle of him and my father's beta. Surprisingly, my brother grabs the arm of my chair and pulls me closer to him. I cast a curious glance at him from behind a curtain of my midnight hair. My beta is my father's age. He has golden hair and bright hazel eyes. His pink lips are full and perfectly fit his hardened face. Zeke is also the best friend of my brother.

I feel hard eyes on me, forcing me to look across at Xander. The man has smoothed back his white hair. His onyx eyes look me over with approval. His aura is deafening, and I almost succumb. Almost. I can tell he is trying to assert dominance by pushing it out. This is because every male in this room has his neck bared in submission. Xander flicks my wrist, causing me to mentally roll my eyes before lowering my head in respect. There are only a few people on this planet who can make my father bare his neck, and it is best not to irritate them.

My father straightens once the man has relaxed and his eyes have turned a warm gold, signaling that we can as well. My father makes a motion to me. "I apologize for my daughter's tardiness. Her flight was delayed, and she arrived directly here from the airport."

The man examines me with critical eyes. "Do you wear this on an airplane?"

I respond without missing a beat. "I actually wore sweatpants. I got ready in the back of the limo. My father has instructed me to dress appropriately for today's meeting." I extend my hand. "My name is Cielo, and I am the Alpha King's first daughter."

The final man across from me acknowledges me when I mention my title.

His golden eyes enlarge as they sweep over me. He runs his hand through his copper curls and straightens them absentmindedly.

The man unexpectedly takes my hand, but instead of shaking it, he kisses it. I maintain a neutral expression as he lets go. This is not an unusual occurrence for me. Being the Alpha's daughter with the highest ranking has its advantages. One is releasing a pheromone that makes all men want me. This increases my chances of breeding. It is also a huge pain in the ass because of this.

The man who had grabbed my hand speaks up. "It is nice to meet you, Cielo." Exzel, the Lycan King. "Prince Ruben is my second son."

As is customary, I nod, slightly exposing my neck. "It is my pleasure, King Exzel."

My father clears his throat, always dissatisfied with the attention I attract. "What have you discovered, Cielo?"

I take out my phone and give it to my father. "Please excuse my lack of professionalism. I did this on the plane. There have been significant attacks on isolated packs along the US's southern borders, with a focus on those near shorelines. Personally, I have discovered evidence of Lycan involvement in those attacks. The more inner-city packs appear to be attacked only during full moons, and mostly when they are out running. When attacked, these wolves are almost always in groups of three or more. Rural towns are destroyed seconds after they call for help.Northern attacks are less frequent but more brutal. Even those in the inner city are wiped out before help arrives. I believe they are more Lycan base than southern attacks."

I reach over and change the screen to a picture, which I hand to the Lycan King before he can say anything. "Each attack is ruthless and destructive, with no survivors. That is not something I can say for our southern comrades."

King Exzel examines the photographs, quickly flipping through them. "I do not like this," he says, handing the phone to his son to examine. "Based on the damage, I believe your assessment is correct." He examines me once more, assessing my worth. "Would not this job be better suited to the King's Gamma?"

"Gamma Lucious is currently recovering, so I am temporarily covering his duties," I explain as I hand back my phone to Ruben. He gives me a wink, which I dismiss. "I sent these pictures to your phone as well, Father."

The head of the Lycan King cocks. "I had no knowledge of any attacks on His Majesty."

My father smirks and moves his gaze away, leaving me to respond. "I was the reason for his unexpected stay in the infirmary, so it is only natural that I would assume his role until he recovers," I say, giving my father a slightly dirty look.

Ruben chuckles. "You? Can you put the most powerful Gamma in the recovery ward?"

Before addressing my father, I shrugged, as if nothing had happened. "I have already dispatched two armies to southeast Texas. It is where I think one of the hideouts is."

"There have not been any attacks in southeast Texas," Exzel asserts, challenging me.

I lock my gaze on him. "Exactly. Why not there, after all? They are attempting to avoid drawing attention to themselves."

My father nods appreciatively, but my gaze remains fixed on the Lycan King. He first looks away, then towards my father. "Is your daughter always this...difficult?"

"She would not be the Alpha's daughter if she wasn't," my father proudly responds. "I will let you know what I hear as soon as I get an update, Cielo."

Xander takes command. "I will make certain that the men are properly prepared for any survivors."

My father's phone beeps on cue. "Get them prepared. Gentlemen, please excuse me, it appears we have a lead that we need to investigate," he says as he stands. "King Exzel, you are welcome to lend as much assistance as you see fit," he says to the Lycan King.

The king rises, his gaze fixed on me. "I will go see what assistance we can provide. I believe our wives are still discussing the Moonlight Ball, so I will refrain from interfering."

It is six o,'clock in the morning. Of course, they are working on it. While waiting for our dismissal, I nearly groan. I despise that thing. It marks the beginning of the Claiming. Before we are hunted, unmated females are presented for introduction.

Is not it archaic? You would be correct. I am in my final year of this stupid tradition, but thanks to my family, I will always be subjected to that damn ball.

Chapter 2 Chap 2

Cielo POV.

My father grins. "I heard your family will be there this year. Is Prince Ruben going to compete this year?"

Exzel smirks proudly. "Ruben and Cain will be at the ball this year, but neither wants to take part in the Claiming."

I exhale a silent sigh of relief. I am fine with werewolves. Lycans, on the other hand, are a completely different story. Lycans rarely find gifted mates, but they will almost always choose a lycan mate. It is not unheard of for them to take part in the Claiming. I do not mind if they want to participate next year, but not this year.

My father accepts his response with a nod. "I am sure there will be a few disappointed she-wolves if that is the case. However, I believe you are putting all the men to sleep tonight."

Exzel is staring at my brother. "How about your family?"

My father sighs and shakes his head. "My two youngest have made mates. Xander is the only one that hasn't, and he will be participating this year, along with his sister Cielo."

That piques the interest of the Lycan King. "I assumed Xander was the only one who had not found his mate. Why is she taking part?"

I speak before the others and thus control the conversation. "My exclusion necessitates the presence of my mate." Every single male stiffens as I take this opportunity to leave. I take a step back and stare at them. "I am afraid I must depart from the current subject."

My father has a scowl on his face. "Please notify your mother that you have returned home, Cielo."

I nod, bend slightly to show my neck, and exit the suddenly quiet and solemn room.

As I walk out, I hear my father apologize for my early departure. I am not in the mood to talk about my heartbreak. It is common knowledge among werewolves.

It is one of the reasons I am considered cursed. Every single person I have fallen in love with has met a terrible end. It is one of the primary reasons I decided to live alone. However, as a she-wolf, this is easier said than done.

"Cielo!" I hear a shrill shout out.

I grimace and turn to my left, only to realize I have passed the grand hall. My mother has decked it out with glowing stars, trees, and rustic wooden tables.

She is making an effort to appear to be outside. Why can not we just go outside?

My mother is standing next to a woman with long, dark brown hair.

I can tell who the woman is based on her golden eyes and incredibly warm smile. The woman is tall, standing at five feet ten inches, almost as tall as I am.

My mother and father are both six feet tall, and I have her long onyx-colored hair, but that is about it. Her indigo eyes are caring, and she smiles at me with her pale pink lips.

"Cielo, come over here," my mother says, extending her arm to me. I approach her and she quickly wraps me in a loving embrace.

She rubs my back while sniffing me. "Can you tell me what happened?" She demands, grabbing my arm. She quickly pushes up the long sleeve I am wearing, making me grimace. I got it past Dad, but I was naive to believe I could get it past her. She pulls up her sleeve, revealing a long slash mark. It is about the length of my forearm and two to three inches wide.

My mother exhales in horror. "Can you tell me what happened?"

I turn to look at the amused Lycan Queen. "I apologize on behalf of my mother. My name is Cielo, and I am her eldest daughter."

My mother ignores her and continues to examine my arm. The Lycan Queen smiles softly at me. "Hello, my name is Melia. We were just talking about security measures for the ball."

"Cielo," my mother says, sniffing it and winced. "Wolfsbane?"

I smile softly as I touch her hand. "Mother, it is only a few hours old. I discovered a rogue while we were investigating an attacked town. He charged at me, but I killed him before he could do much harm. We did not discover the Wolfsbane until after he died."

"Why would a werewolf even come into contact with Wolfsbane?" While the queen examines my wound, my mother demands.

Melia's eyes widen as I say, "I did not say the rogue was a werewolf."

"Are you saying a Lycan did this?" My mother squeaks.

"It is definitely Lycan," Melia says as she examines my wound more closely. "And that is definitely Wolfsbane," my mother yells, making the queen and I both wince. She drags me out of the room while I plead with Melia.

"Marcus," my mother yells as she returns to the conference room. I am about to pass away from embarrassment. "Would you mind explaining to me why you let our daughter go somewhere so dangerous?"

"Sandra," My father warns with a growl.

"Look at her arm," my mother responds, pointing to mine. "You said you would not hurt her."

"What are you on about? Its sole purpose was to assess the wreckage." When he looks at my arm, his eyes darken. "Who did this to you, Cielo?"

"A Lycan rogue," I respond, bored. "You can, however, unwind. He is no longer alive."

"You? Did you kill a Lycan?" The King demands, again scrutinizing me.

"Is it supposed to be difficult?" I inquire, batting my lashes at him.

"She is the Alpha King's daughter, Exzel," Melia says as she enters the room. "You can sense her strength as much as I do. The Wolfsbane is what worries me."

My father grimaces as he smells my wound. "I have never heard of anyone using Wolfsbane in one of these attacks."

"Never once have these attacks left a rogue behind," Exzel muses, looking at his wife. "Are you saying you think this was deliberate?"

"If it was a rogue Lycan wielding Wolfsbane, he had to have one goal in mind. Capture."

"Considering their target, it would make sense to make a Lycan do it," Exzel says, looking at me. "I suspect their motivation if they wanted the Alpha King's unmated daughter."

My spine tingles, and my father's eyes darken. "Did someone try to mate my daughter forcibly?"

"It is just a theory," Exzel reassures. "You need to calm down before your temper takes over."

I tuck my arm behind my back, removing it from his line of sight.

"I am going to take a nap. I am a little tired from the day's events," I say with a pained smile.

He nods absentmindedly as my mother goes to comfort her colleague. I nod to the lycan king and queen, leaving them to mull over what they have just learned. It is not like I was not going to tell them about my assault. I intended to tell them when my parents were alone. I had not counted on the Lycan King and Queen taking their time when I arrived. The fact that they have arrived completely surprised me. What brings them here?

Chapter 3 Chap 3

Cielo POV.

I pull my sleeve down after another departure. It will heal within a few hours.

After I killed the Lycan, the pack doctor treated it. Lycans, like wolves, cannot function outside of a pack. Without a strong leader, they will become enraged. If that is the case, why was there someone waiting for me? I pause in my steps as I realize I am going upstairs.

"He was not mad," I almost whisper. In my mind, I slow down the events. I was rummaging through the Moon Down Pack's wreckage. It was not a large gathering, only a few hundred people. I could smell the scents of the mutilated and broken pack members. I also detected a few Lycans, which was unusual, but it was not the first time I had detected them at one of these locations, so I was not concerned. I was inspecting this particular structure because it was the Alpha's pack-house. It had burned down, and only the bottom level walls remained, but it was crumbling.

It had such a strong lycan scent that I assumed it was a lycan that took out the alpha. I was not too concerned because I was just photographing the damage. I would stepped behind a wall, just out of sight of the Guard Captain, who was directing their search to be more thorough. His primary responsibility was to keep me safe. A man lunged out from a wrecked armoire as I was raising my phone to photograph it.

He would already shifted, becoming a perfect blend of beast and human. His body and elongated face were covered in silver fur. He was a wolf on two legs. When he scratched me and tried to grab me, I dropped my phone. Quickly.

I shifted to my wolf and ripped through his neck, instantly killing him. It was a much easier fight than I had expected. Perhaps it was simply his surprise that caught him off guard.

"How come he was not mad?" I wonder, rolling over the rail and back to the ground. I bolt for the meeting hall, ignoring the sound of someone entering the house.

"Dad," I say as I open the door to reveal the Lycan King and Queen. They look at me, surprised, as I try to catch my breath. "I apologize for barging in, I was hoping to speak with my father," I said quickly.

Exzel speaks once I have straightened up. "He accompanied your mother. They received a call from the Guard Captain about the incident you had with a lycan. They were to bring him back here."

"I appreciate it," I say. "I will go look for him."

"What happened, Cielo? You are acting as if a snake bit you." Melia inquires as she approaches my injured arm. She strokes it gently as I stare into her hypnotic eyes. I never noticed, but her eyes warmed to a cool liquid, hypnotizing me.

She speaks softly, her voice like a warm hug around my worries. "What are you thinking, dear girl? What has frightened you?"

I pull away slightly, shaking my head, aware of what she is attempting. "You only need to ask, your Highness." I shake my head again, trying to shake the strange warm feeling she is instilled in me. What made her do that?

I move my feet away from her. "The lycan who attacked me. He was not insane like most rogues. Since he was there to capture me, he is been following a powerful lycan. The Wolfsbane's purpose was to paralyze me rather than kill me. He was waiting for me, for me to leave his sight. He had not counted on my presence. That is why it was such a simple kill."

I put my hand on my arm. "The Wolfsbane was insufficient to kill me. If that had been their goal, they could have achieved it."

"What went wrong?" Ezxel inquires.

I give him a hard stare. "Despite my younger brother, I am the strongest wolf, aside from my father. It will take more than a standard dose of Wolfsbane to slow me down."

"And you are rejecting the position of Alpha Queen?" He inquires, his brow furrowed.

"Pack life is not what I want right now," I say, giving him a stern look. "To appease my father, I agreed to take over Xander's role if something happened to him."

"I doubt his Beta is okay with that," Exzel says as he examines me.

I sigh. "He is welcome to challenge me, but he will lose his life."

Melia's eyes are wide with surprise as she looks at me. A female alpha who refuses to be an Alpha Queen is even more rare. To be honest, I have always wanted to fill my father's shoes. I trained for it my entire life, up until the age of eighteen. I have had little desire to stay in this world since that day.

"Please excuse me," I say as I take a step back. I do not like the fact that the Lycan Queen tried to hypnotize me.

"I wish you would stay, Cielo," King Exzel says quickly.

I come to a halt. He is not ordering me, but it would be extremely impolite for the Alpha Princess to refuse the Lycan King's request. It could also be considered sufficient cause for war. I doubt that would be the outcome if I denied his request, but I am not one to risk my father's disapproval. With just one word from him, I am firmly entrenched as Alpha Queen.

"What do you require of me, My Lord?" I inquire, my voice hollow.

"I would like to know what happened to your mate," he says, sounding exactly like a psychiatrist would to a reluctant patient.

My fists clench, forced to speak because he and his mate are both using their powerful auras on me. "Why do you want to know?" I ask gently, my gaze fixed on the door. I can not attack a Lycan King, so I have to comfort my wolf, calming her while I try to do the same for myself.

"I like to learn as much as I can about the people I work with."

With whom are you collaborating? Is he interested in assisting my father in sorting out this mess? My father is one step ahead of the Lycan King. My father's primary responsibility revolves around werewolves. Exzel's responsibilities include werewolf issues, property disputes, and anything else involving Lycans. The Lycan King must believe that these attacks interfere with his duties.

Even so, now that I have realized this, I wish I did not have to reveal this information. The death of a friend is personal, and it is never forgotten. Still, it was a king to whom I could not say no. I speak after taking a deep breath to center myself. "Xander and I had moved for the first time on our eighteenth birthday. We were running around, learning more about border patrol and our wolves. Xander and I were divided. I chose my father's beta. Xander had chosen Gamma Lucious. We had only been shifted for about five minutes when we were separated to begin our training. Logan was showing me how to quickly transition into and out of wolf form. It was exhausting work, but I was prepared for it. We got a call about rogues an hour into our training. Beta Logan did his best to get me to safety, but we were ambushed by two wolves and one lycan. While Beta Logan went after the lycan, I handled the wolves. After finishing off the two male wolves, I turned around to lock eyes with the most precious set of silver eyes I would ever seen clamped through Beta Logan's neck. His scent and sheer terror overwhelmed my senses. He smelled like rain and redwood. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water and my heart break."

Dutifully, I continue. "My shift nearly came to a halt as my wolf screamed for her mate. However, the blood dripping from his mouth belonged to my father's beta," I begin unbuttoning my long business suit jacket, "and it was enough to overpower my wolf's senses. I lunged for my mate's throat, and we both locked onto each other's necks; he was to mark me, and I was to mark him for blood. He was a lycan, and I could not beat him. I was a first-time shifter who was still untrained in this form. I was losing at the time, and the only thing keeping me going was my rage. I managed to wriggle free but," I say, dropping the jacket to reveal the long claw marks surrounding my shoulder, "I wasn't fast enough. He pinned me down and clamped his canines into my neck," I brush my hair, revealing the faint marks on my neck, "and his teeth found their marks. My eyes met Logan's vacant ones while he was enjoying his teeth in my mark. It gave me the strength I needed to make the transition. I transformed into a human and changed my hand into a claw. I ripped out his throat while he was distracted and then broke his neck when he let go."

It's silent so I finish his thought for him. "Yes, King Exzel, I was the one who assassinated my own mate." I put on my shirt again. "Now, if that is what you want. I would like to retire and finish recovering from Wolfsbane's poisoning."
