Chapter 1 A Divorce Agreement

When Michelle Greenwood got up in the morning, she didn't feel refreshed as one would expect after a good night's rest. She felt restless due to her lingering anxiety that something bad was about to happen. This made her extremely upset. As expected, she received a direct call from Gerard Roberts just a few moments before the clock ticked to nine. He told her to go to Robert Enterprises before ten o'clock.

She had no idea why he wanted to see her all of a sudden, but she knew at the back of her mind that it definitely wasn't something good. So she quickly got dressed and walked for about ten minutes to Robert Enterprises.

It was not the first time that she had entered the building. There was nothing new, except that this time, she received a direct order from her husband, the son of the owner of the Robert Enterprises, to go to the headquarters of their company in Binfield to sign the divorce agreement!

A while later, she quietly sat in Gerard's office as she held the pen in her hand so tight that her fingertips quickly turned pale. She looked down to glance at the divorce papers on the table. She was deliberately trying to avoid eye contact with the cold and indifferent eyes of the person across from her. She didn't understand why he had to go as far as wanting a divorce. They had been married for about a year now. Had she done something wrong? Or was it something else?

But even if he indeed wanted a divorce, he wouldn't bother asking her to personally come and sit in his office. They could simply discuss it at home. However, she almost forgot that he hadn't been home for more than two months. If fact, he had rarely ever been home. Nothing intimate happened between them.

Michelle knew well that the reason why he married her in the first place was that she was a Greenwood, which was of high status and esteemed reputation. More than a year had passed since their marriage, and Gerard quickly rose to power until he reached a status high enough for him to be regarded as the backbone of the Roberts family. He now held a significant amount of influence in Binfield. She, on the other hand, remained as Michelle Greenwood, a woman with no significant achievement; a nobody. No one even knew that she was Gerard Roberts' legal wife. This was included in the agreement between him and the Greenwoods. Their marriage must be kept as a secret.

In order to win over the allegiance of the Roberts, the Greenhwoods decided to force her to marry him, no matter the cost. She was nothing but a dispensable asset within the Roberts family. Her status was even lower than that of a servant. Michelle couldn't help but coldly snort at the thought of this. It seemed that Gerard was indeed a clever guy. He knew how low her position was in the Greenwood family, but he chose to marry her instead of one of her cousins. He expected that the Greenwood family didn't care for her, and that they wouldn't say a single word when the time came that he'd be divorcing her.

The smirk on her pretty face turned into a wide grin as she thought about this. The Greenwoods appeared to have gotten a taste of their own medicine this time. Not only had they not been able to take any advantage of their alliance with the Roberts, but they also suffered some losses. What would happen if the Greenwoods found out that Gerard finally decided to file a divorce? It seemed that the consequent events following their separation would be very interesting.

"Sign it!" Gerard indifferently exclaimed as he stared at her coldly.

"Fine." She finally mustered up the courage to raise her head and look at him in the eyes. It felt surreal for her as she recalled the fact that this man had lived with her for more than a year. With a joyful smile on her face, she picked up the pen, and carefully signed her name as if she was trying to win a calligraphy competition during her school years. She was extremely serious about the task at hand. In every letter written down, she could feel her heart slowly sinking. However, what she felt sad about was not the fact that their marriage was over, but how she was reminded of her own insignificance in the Greenwood family, and in her own husband's heart.

"Michelle. " Gerard didn't expect that she would be so calm through all this. For a moment there, it seemed that a cat got his tongue. After signing the papers, Michelle looked at him with a warm smile at the corners of her lips, waiting for him to break the silence. He awkwardly cleared his throat, and said, "Michelle, I'll ask the lawyer to transfer the money you deserve to your account in about an hour. You will also retain ownership of our house because it was yours from the beginning. You can continue to live there in the future. As for my belongings..."

Chapter 2 How Ridiculous

"Mr. Roberts, I'll get rid of them right away," Michelle said as she glanced at the esteemed man straight in the eyes. She never cared about anything else ever since the passing of her parents in the tragic car accident. "I believe you have no interest in keeping such 'decorations', right?"

Michelle had been married to him for more than a year already, but Gerard hardly ever came home to see her. She could very well count with one hand the number of times that her husband visited their household. So, if those things were not decorations, then what were they for? Scenery enhancements?

"Do whatever you want with them," said Gerard. He was not affected at all by Michelle's sarcasm, but his eyes were locked on her like a scope. He always knew that Michelle was as stunning as a goddess, but it had been quite a while since he laid a good leisurely look at his wife. Today, she was even more beautiful in her pink dress that matched the season's weather, her crystalline eyes glimmered like spring water as she stared at him closely, and her rosy cheeks did not lose the adorable dimples that flashed whenever she smiled. Michelle was only in her early twenties, but here she was, ending her short-lived marriage with Gerard and officially becoming a divorced woman. Was all of this his fault?

Gerard awakened his senses to halt his overthinking, so that he would not change his mind. He knew the reason why he married Michelle, and it was still clear in his memory, but he had already granted her wishes. She now had all the freedom and wealth to herself! They were like two intersecting lines that meddled with each other at a certain point, before they continued to move on with their paths.

"Damien, you can drive Miss Greenwood back home now," said Gerard.

"No, thank you. I'll be fine on my own, Mr. Roberts. I plan to buy a luxury car for myself actually. After all, the alimony you gave me is a hefty sum of money. Even if I decide to slack off for the rest of my life, the riches will be enough for me to enjoy my luxurious lifestyle up to my last dying breath!" Michelle waved the divorce agreement in her hand like a flag of victory. She turned her back against Gerard and left the office in a jiff.

The moment she was out of the room, Michelle rushed to sit on the nearest sofa in the lounge, firmly gripping the divorce papers in her hand. She whispered to herself, 'I will show you, Gerard. Even without the Roberts and the Greenwoods, I will have a happy life of liberty! I can finally live a free life.'

After taming her thoughts, she stood up and walked out of the company doors at once. It was not until then that Damien returned to Gerard's office to report what he had observed.

"Sir, she has left the building. She appeared to be disheartened, but it faded away as soon as she calmed down," said Damien. He had been working for Gerard for more than five years already. He knew everything about their marriage, but today was the first instance where he had come into close contact with Michelle. To him, Michelle was unusually special.

"Okay, then tell the lawyer to finalize the papers as soon as possible," said Gerard. He gave his instruction with no eye-contact as he flipped through the pages of the documents in front of him.

"Right away, sir," Damien said as he left Gerard's office immediately.

Spring came a little late this year. Michelle casually wandered around the most bustling streets of Binfield with her luxury bag as she ignored the flashy scenery around her. Since Gerard divorced her, she became as free as a dove, but she appeared to be lost in her own world.

No couple in the world would have a life like theirs. They were strangers with no chemistry. It was as if they came from two incompatible universes. But now that they had parted ways, she felt a sense of relief in her chest. It was a good choice to divorce him. She could do whatever she desired! Without the shackles of the Greenwoods, she was finally out of her cage. She could be her genuine self once more.

It had been more than a year since she got married to Gerard, but they seldom saw each other. He never even bothered asking her out to the various banquets and occasions he had attended because he already had other women to accompany him. Sometimes, a random debutante would go along with him. At the next event, he would show up with some popular starlet by his side. In the instance after that, he would be with a youthful fashion model. Michelle never turned up in any of those jamborees, and she was his wife! How ridiculous was that?

Chapter 3 Bad Luck

In fact, Gerard used her to win the Greenwoods' approval of many of his projects while she used him to escape the Greenwoods. Perhaps their marriage was just a give-and-take relationship.

Michelle was so riled up in her thoughts that she did not notice a figure rushing towards her, and it was not until the robber violently snatched her bag did she awaken to her senses. She was stunned by the crime that flashed right before her eyes, but she was quick to react as she pursued the robber through the crowded streets!

"Stop that man! He snatched my bag!" exclaimed Michelle as she yelled in the hopes that someone would help her. Regardless of what she was wearing, Michelle was hot on the robber's tail in what seemed to be the chase of her life. Unfortunately, she forgot one important trait about this place. Here, people were detached and callous. So, no one bothered to come to her aid. Some even managed to cat-call her.

"Hey! Stop!" said Michelle. She was gasping for her breath as she turned to a corner in her pursuit. This street was much quieter than the bustling street that she was in a few moments ago, and fewer people were passing by. She thought, 'I guess today is the day I lose my bag and everything in it.'

Just as Michelle was about to raise the white flag, a red sports car zoomed past her on hot wheels and drifted accurately to stop the mugger from getting away. The running criminal fell heavily to the ground in his attempt to dodge.

She might have looked like an exhausted horse, but Michelle hurriedly took off her designer heels and rushed bare-footed towards the robber. She snatched her bag back and threw it aside. She then stomped as hard as she could on the robber who was aching on the ground. She said, "How dare you steal my bag!"

Michelle was fuming steam at this point. She grabbed her heels and thumped them hard on the man's head. When she finished beating the criminal, she straightened up and panted hoarsely. She suddenly reckoned about the driver who helped her in her time of quandary. She thought that she must thank him for the kind favor.

She raised her head, and was immediately startled by the pair of handsome eyes that beamed towards her. The man leaned against the car as he gazed at her with a smile. His eyes were tender, and his masculine jaw had the most perfect contours. Even a stunner like Michelle could not compare to this man's overwhelming charm.

"Well, thank you for your help," said Michelle. She stood upright with her high-heels hanging in her fingers and glanced at the attractive guy in front of her as she didn't say anything else except expressing her gratitude.

"You're welcome, gorgeous. I won't take the credit for it though. Your persistence got the better of this robber," said the man. He picked up the bag on the ground and handed it over to Michelle. Noticing the shoes in her hand, he grinned in ridicule and said, "You have no idea how to take care of yourself, do you?"

The man shook his head with pity as he took the pair of heels from Michelle. He crouched down on one knee and gently dusted off her sole before sliding a shoe back on her foot. He repeated the same courtesy with the other foot, and his gesture seemed to be so noble and eloquent as if he was dressing his own feet.

Michelle was petrified by the impulsive deed and did not know how to react. She felt like a pet in the hands of Gerard, but this man made her feel like prey. Deep inside, she was in a hysterical panic as the chivalry happened. This was the first time that she behaved like this in front of a stranger.

"You ... " Alas, Michelle succumbed to her racking nerves. She had no idea who this man was and what he intended to do next. She quickly grabbed her bag, bit her plump lower lip, and was priming herself to leave the scene, but somehow she could not. Her feet seemed to have rooted on the ground, and she was unable to move a single muscle.
