Mira POV
The booming voice of the Alpha, my father, jolted me awake. Startled and frightened, I sat upright on my mattress, shivering in pain from his previous night's beatings. My heart raced as I forced myself to stand, wincing from his abuse. Though hiding in the closet seemed tempting, past experiences warned me that it might provoke further ire from him."
I walked across to where he sits with my mother, the Luna. My father stands up suddenly and lands a hot slap on my left cheek. I hold my hand to my face to rub the stinging of the slap, looking down at my feet as tears threaten to fall.
"Where's our breakfast? Do we have to beg you, the house help, to cook and clean? Is that too much to ask?" He yells as he sits back in his seat.
"Are you deaf, huh? We know you're mute, but has that also affected your hearing?" He asks, rubbing his forehead in fury, I stand still, frightened to speak.
I stared straight at my mother, hoping she'd say something, do anything to defend me. However, all I could see was anger and disgust which was etched in her face.
At that point, I knew I was alone. I have seen her talk and play with pack members' children, but not once has she been nice to me or made an effort to speak to me.
"Are you still standing there? You're worthless. You know how to do nothing!" Mother yells as she grasps my arm, her nails digging into my skin. She pulls me from the room, and I stumble while trying to keep up with her pace. I am weak, feeling the world spinning around me.
Immediately we entered the kitchen, the smell of burnt food and grease assaults my nose. The floor is covered in a mess of spilled food and drinks. She releases my arm, pushing me to the floor, and points at the mess with her face clenched in anger and disgust.
"Clean this up, and then make us breakfast," she hisses and turns to leave the kitchen. I bent down and started to pick up the empty can and the takeout plates before I heard a silent whisper. At first, I was frightened, thinking she had already left, but only to find her still standing by the doorway, watching my every move.
"In my past life, I must have offended the moon goddess enough that she punished me with a child like you," she says quietly, making tears roll down my cheeks.
"Just take a good look at yourself. You are mute and an abomination to the werewolf race! Not worthy of being called my daughter. You're a disgrace to our lineage and to this pack," her voice in anger with every word she says, "I curse the day you were born." With those words, she takes her leave.
Although it isn't the first time, I've heard those hateful words. I can't help but feel dejected each time. Is it my fault I was born this way? Is being mute a sin? After all, the Moon Goddess created me this way. None of this is my fault.
I tried to yell and tell her all this wasn't my fault. If you have a bone to pick, then why not pick it up with the god-damned moon goddess? She should at least accept me for who I am, not blame me for things that are out of my control, and she should stand by me regardless of what people say,all these words rumble in my stomach but I can't voice them out, which has me crying harder in frustration and not at what she said but I keep on cleaning up the kitchen.
I force myself and drag my feet to my room. Today is my birthday, not just a normal birthday but my 18th birthday where I will find my mate. The thought of today has always helped me through the hard times when my life was a pure, living hell. Throughout my life, I've always been alone, even with my twin brother, who is always compared to me.
Aiden has been their perfect precious little alpha right from childhood and was placed above me because he is an Alpha, while I was the omega child they never wanted, He could do no wrong I've had to clean up his messes ever since childhood, not when he broke mother's favorite mirror and I was told it was my fault for not keeping a close watch on him.
Being an Omega was the validation they needed to mistreat and judge me for things I couldn't control The beatings from the Alpha, my father, don't help matters at all. Even if my father is abusive, at least my mother should stand by me. But no, Mother is the worst of them all.
I am alone in this cold, cruel world with only one thing that keeps me going, and gives me hope, and it is the thought of finding my fated mate at the mating ceremony on my 18th birthday, who I sincerely hope and know is going to be there for me, to fight my battles, and accept me for who I am. People from various packs are going to attend the mating ceremony.
I sit on my mattress, feeling all giddy, almost jumping around in happiness. I fix my eyes on the clock, counting the minutes and seconds, The clock shows it is almost midnight.
Immediately after the clock strikes twelve, I shower and bring out the clothes I already prepared for the ceremony. It isn't elegant, but it will do. I wear it and fix a smile on my face with determination not to go anywhere near my family because I plan to enjoy today with my mate.
I the great hall where people are already in attendance. My eyes widened at the number of people gathered to grace the occasion. When I entered the vicinity, all eyes darted on me immediately.
I sighed as they threw disdainful looks my way. Yeah, I was known as the useless mute, who doesn't stay in a place; hated and disregarded by all, but I didn't care because everything was going to change today.
I ignored their stares and watched how the mating ceremony was being done. I smiled as I watched wolves sniff their mates out and with time, I started to get nervous. I had numerous questions going on in my head; questions like how long would it take for me to get mine? And if I do, will he accept me?
I anxiously waited for something to happen, but nothing did. I started panicking, and my heart began to race. What on earth was going on? I told myself to be patient, to wait just a little longer. But as seconds turned to minutes, and minutes to hours, still nothing happened.
I wait for hours, watching others find their fated mates. The goddess wouldn't be cruel as to deny me my only deepest wish right?
It was almost morning, and everyone was leaving, their eyes shining with happiness as they left with their fated mates to their various packs.
Then it dawns on me that I am truly alone. I think of the shame awaiting me at the pack house without my mate to see my parents. I had hoped with all my heart that I wouldn't be going back to my abusive pack the mockery of the other pack members, and the emptiness of living without a mate. I felt a wave of pain as my heart ached in sorrow, I resigned to date and stood to leave
Just as I am about to stand up and leave, I notice a strange aura surrounding me, sending a creepy feeling down my spine.
Not wanting to be caught up in whatever that was, I immediately stood up to leave when I heard "mate" said in unison by male werewolves who were gathering around me. Their fangs are bared, and their eyes are pitch black. Fear grips me from where I stand, frozen in place.
I knew I was a steeler wolf but then these men can't be my fated mates they're just blinded by my stealer scent, because It's impossible to have more than one fated mate.
I wonder what is going on as they start to advance toward me. I turn to run, but their hands hold me, keeping me captive.
"What the hell is going on here?" An authoritative voice, deep and commanding, echoes through the hall. The room falls silent as everyone turns to look at him, bowing our heads in submission to the Alpha's command, at that moment my inner wolf surges up within me and whispered.
"Mate".
Mira's POV
The authoritative voice stopped them, as we all bowed our heads in submission to the overwhelming power emanating from him. The omegas were a whimpering mess, as they whined and I'm sure they would have their tummy up for a rub if they were in their wolf forms.
"I asked what the hell is going on here." I heard the authoritative voice say again.
We were startled out of our state. I saw how the men stumbled for words to say. I looked up into his eyes and my wolf stirred within me, recognizing him as my mate. I thanked my stars for meeting him, although I would have preferred a better situation but at least he'll free me from these people.
"Alpha, we're currently taking care of a pack emergency. Nothing much, sir." They said, with me still in their clutches, holding me tighter like a vise.
"Pack's emergency huh, unhand my mate now!" He growled the last part as he walked closer to us.
They quickly released me and moved away from me due to fear of what the Alpha might do to them. Besides that, a wolf can never disobey a direct order from an alpha, especially a true alpha, unless they are rogue.
Rogues are usually banished or runaway lone wolves without packs. They've lost their sanity and are always in their beast form, with bloody red eyes. They are known for brutality, and ruthlessness when they come in contact with any wolf, not even an Alpha is exempted from their fury.
I ran into his arms, sighing in relief as I embraced him. He wrapped his hands tightly around me, and he smelled of fresh grass and musk. Lifting my head, he held me by the chin, staring straight into my eyes with his ocean-blue eyes. This made me shy and red in the face. I was lost in his world for that few moments, and I wasn't prepared for what happened next.
"Have mercy on us, Alpha, and please stay away from that girl. She isn't what you think she is." One of them yelled, pointing at me, "She's a witch".
"Silence!" The Alpha growled in his deep voice, the air filled with authority. "How are you? Are you willing to go now? "My mate scoffed, grabbing my hands as we turned to go.
"She's mute and a stealer wolf!" one of the men said and stopped us in our tracks. I tugged my mate's hand, expecting us to continue to leave, but surprisingly, he yanked his hand from my hands.
I knew I was in deep trouble. I wanted him to ignore them and act like he couldn't hear them, but that wasn't the case.
"What do you mean?" He said in a low eerie voice that made me shiver in dread.
The man with the loud opinion stood up and walked forward to me, Their gazes lingered on me, lust evident in their eyes as they moved to touch me. However, my mate snarled in warning, stepping between me and the man, effectively halting his attempt to lay his hands on me."
"Touch her again if you don't need your arms, because I'll rip it off the next time you lay your hands on her." He shouted at him. "Explain yourself."
"Alpha, she is mute and can't speak. Worst of all, this girl is a stealer wolf, a seductress that lures men with her sweet smell. You're a well-known distinguished Alpha, you deserve someone better, not her." He explained that in a rush, all the while shouting and pointing accusing fingers at me.
"Who knows what she is trying to do, perhaps to seduce you the way she does to several unmated males in this pack? Didn't you see the way she hugged you?" Another one asked from the crowd.
"Stealer wolves are known for their adulterous ways, she's only trying to seduce you, please stay away from her," Eden, one of the pack warriors, added.
Disbelief filled me upon realizing the pack's conspiracy against me. This very man had cornered me just last week during my trip to the farmers' market, proposing himself as a lover - a proposition I promptly declined due to my commitment to awaiting my fated mate.
I couldn't believe how he would stoop so low to go as far as smearing me in front of my mate. Hot tears dropped down my face. How far is he willing to go to get what he wants? Just because I rejected his offer.
"Aren't you going to explain what's going on here to me, and defend yourself?" He shouted as he looked at me, expecting an explanation, but I could only shake my head and make a pleading sign rubing my palms together, letting the tears flow freely down my cheeks.
"So all that they are saying is true?"
"You're are dumb and also a slut?". My mate asked as he faced me. I desperately wished I could speak and call them out on their lies. I opened my mouth, desperately hoping word would spring to shut them up. I knelt, begging him, sobbing out my frustrations.
"It's all true, Alpha. She has been mute from birth," they chorused and frowned.
"Hell no, I can't accept you," he looked away and turned to leave.
"Stay away from me, or I just might kill you," pushing me away with force. I fell to the floor and held on firmly to his leg, refusing to let him leave.
This isn't what I imagined today would be. I have suffered daily, both physical and mental abuse from my family, and even the pack members were not left out, but I've always consoled myself with dreams of meeting my mate on my 18th birthday whenever I thought of giving up.
"She's cursed Alpha, right from the day she was born, let her go Alpha," they all chorused.
I shook my head vigorously, not budging from where I stood by him.
"I reject..." He was about to finish his words when I screamed,
"Nooooo...!" I didn't know where the strength and voice came from. All eyes fell on me muttering in shock.
"She can speak? Isn't that Mira?" Those were the last words I heard before I slumped into his arms.
Navier's POV
As she slumped into my arms, "I felt a surge of conflicting emotions within me. how could this be?" Bewildered and amazed, I questioned myself." Should I take her back to my pack or leave her here?" My mind raced with confusion.
After the death of my Luna, Cara, I fell into deep grieving, consumed by regret. I couldn't forgive myself for leaving her unprotected in the pack.
That fateful day, I had left the pack for a werewolf summit hosted by the neighboring pack. During the meeting, I felt a painful strain on our mate bond, leaving me on edge as I attempted to reach her through our mate link but failed. I then tried to communicate with the pack delta through the pack link, having left him in charge of the pack, and departed with Ethan, my beta.
Feeling uneasy and anxious, I abruptly left the summit alongside Ethan, I rushed home in my wolf form through the forest, till I felt our mate bond break as I doubled over in pain but I refused to be deterred, I got home to meet, Cara in a pool of blood.
The pain and anguish made me unable to perform my duties as the Alpha. The pack was left unprotected and vulnerable to attacks from rival packs and rogues, just as when my father, the former Alpha, lost my mother, his Luna also in a rogue attack. I had promised the pack I would never let such a thing happen again. I refused to find any second chance mate or agree to an arranged marriage in fear of history repeating itself.
But When the elders insisted I either find my second chance mate or accept an arranged marriage with a female Alpha, from the neighborhood packs, I had agreed to attend tonight's mating ceremony, at the Red Moons pack, where Alphas and other werewolves from different packs came together to find their mate's, because I knew I had to do what's best for my pack.
I had lost all hope when I couldn't find her and went in search of my beta Ethan, to get back to our pack, when caught a whiff of my mate's scent, was disappointed only to find out she was mute and a stealer wolf.
Stealer wolves are omegas with alluring scents. They aren't the type of wolves to have fated mates, since they could be easily claimed by just any wolf, even if the male wolf is mated or unmated.
Mating with stealer wolves would only bring trouble and anguish to their fated mate. Whenever they go into heat or their scents are accidentally released, makes male wolves lose their minds and, would be blinded by lust and force themselves on the unprotected stealer wolf or worse kill them. Was this the type of life I would be subjected to?
I needed a mate who would be my partner and equal, a Luna who would be a source of strength and support, not a mute who wouldn't be able to communicate with me and the pack members, not a weak, pathetic mate, who I'll have to protect and worry about all the time. I couldn't help but wonder as I stood there staring at my unconscious mate in my arms.
Amidst my pondering, my Beta Ethan came rushing into me, and I growled at him in annoyance. "Chill man, I have been looking for you, I got lost at the entrance and I couldn't find you," he said with his hands up in the air, and eyes raised in curiosity, before noticing the girl in my arms. "Wow, who's she? You move fast, you know," he says, winking his eyebrows at me.
"Get the car around." I snapped out in frustration.
"Okay, I will no need to yank my head off," he said, pulling out the keys from his pick as he went in search of the car we parked on the parking grounds.
I was waiting for a while before he came around with the car. I walked towards the car, placed my mate in the backseat, and to the driver's side where Ethan sat, and opened the door.
"What?" he asked, staring at me strangely.
"Get out of the car, I'm driving," I said, pulling him by his shirt, and seated in the driver's seat, making myself comfortable.
"Alright, Alright, you're behaving strangely," he said, murmuring to himself as he walked to the other side of the car by the driver's side and got in. Immediately he entered the car, I drove off at a high speed to the highway, holding the car steering wheel in a tight grip.
"That's enough," I said in my Alpha voice. As soon as the words left my mouth, I regretted them. I hated the idea of forcing friends or family members into submission.
"Yes, Alpha," he said in a quiet voice. I could tell that he was hurt by my tone.
Ethan remained silent, making me feel worse than I already was feeling. Ethan is my childhood best friend and my Beta, strong Beta at that, but a cuddly teddy bear at heart. I knew he was there to encourage and make people laugh, even when they were at their lowest.
I took a deep breath, trying to rein in my temper. "I'm sorry, Ethan. I didn't mean to be so harsh."
"It's okay, Alpha," he said, but I could still hear the pain in his voice.
As we drove on, Ethan kept glancing occasionally at my mate in the backseat. He looked at me with a mixture of concern and curiosity. I knew he wanted answers, but the Alpha command kept him from asking.
"She's my mate," I said, sighing in defeat.
Ethan's eyes lit up with happiness at the mention of these words, happy at the prospect of the pack having a new Luna.
"Your second chance, mate?" he said, but frowned when he noticed the indifference in my tone.
"What's wrong with her?" He asked, "Why aren't you happy?"
"She's a stealer wolf," I said, rubbing my hand on my face.
"A stealer wolf, wow those are rare," he said, still confused as to why I was sad at the mention of my mate. "I understand a stealer wolf isn't what you need right now, but the pack needs their Luna, to bring unity and peace back to the pack".
"Ethan, you don't understand. She's a goddamn mute."
This struck him silent, and he sputtered his words, "You mean she's mute?"
"How can a werewolf be mute?" He asked, surprised, because it's unheard of. Werewolves don't have disabilities, we don't get sick, or age faster like human beings.
"I plan on rejecting her," I said, in a voice thick with anguish. "She'll only bring shame and disgrace to the pack."
I thought of Miranda, my first mate, who had died in a rogue attack. "She was a strong warrior, not a weakling," I said and felt my throat tighten, I couldn't bear the thought of being with someone else, "I will never accept a weak, mute wolf as a second mate, she doesn't fit the description of a strong Luna."
"But rejecting her is dangerous, and leaves you vulnerable," Ethan said, his eyes full of concern," which is the last thing the pack needs now".
Silence hung heavy between us, broken by the distant howl of the pack guards patrolling the boarders, signaling their greetings to the alpha. As we drove to the front of the pack house.
I threw the keys at one of the pack warriors standing by the door to park the car in the garage and signaled to the other one to come closer.
"Lock her up," I said, walking into the pack house with Ethan trailing after me.
