"I had told you never to appear in front of me again, but you disregarded my warning and came here yourself, even appearing in my room all alone like this" Leigh said as he grabbed my neck making me drop the bucket in my hand.
"Please let me go" I said grabbing his arms on my neck but he tightened his grip and was actually strangling me. I struggled to escape but I couldn't. Was I really going to die like this? I couldn't even utter a word as his arms pressed out every air in my throat. How did it come to this? I tried to recall as my life flashed before my eyes. It all started during that damned marking ceremony.
~~~~~
"Iris, why are you standing over there looking lost? Get those flowers to the table quickly!" Madam Maureen yelled, and I snapped back to reality.
"Yes, ma'am," I replied politely with a smile. "Why does she always have to yell? No wonder she couldn't find a mate," I said silently to myself.
I picked up the flowers and arranged them quickly. The ceremony was starting soon. It was a marking ceremony where an alpha announces his mate publicly before marking her privately. It was like a wedding ceremony that only the rich and powerful got to partake in. I imagined myself having such a ceremony too, but that was almost impossible. Although I already had a special someone who I hoped to be mated with, I couldn't dream of such a thing because I was a low-level omega.
"The ceremony is commencing. Everyone, go to your assigned spot!" Madam Maureen yelled, and all the other workers and I immediately located our various spots.
I was a server at the event, and as a low-level omega, it was hard to find a proper job as those were reserved for the higher species. I walked around and served wine to the guests. It was not a hard task because I was used to it. Although Archie, my boyfriend, had specifically told me not to go out today but to rest since I have had to work all week, I couldn't miss out on this gig because the pay was good.
Soon, the pair to be mated were invited to the stage. This part always excited me, so I hurriedly served a few more drinks as I walked forward so I could take a look at the new couple, and to my greatest surprise,
"Archie," I whispered softly. What was he doing here, and why is he standing at the front as if he's the one to be mated? What was going on? I couldn't wrap my head around it; I felt a little dizzy, so I dropped the tray in my hand. It made a loud sound, and everyone looked at me. Archie caught sight of me and quickly looked away.
"Who dares disrupt the ceremony?" Luka Lane said in an overpowering voice. He was the leader of his pack and the father of the omega to be mated.
Madam Maureen rushed forward to apologize and quickly dragged me away.
"What is wrong with you? Why do you always cause problems? I should never have employed you for this job. Do you know who you offended? What if I don't get more jobs because of your carelessness?" She said it agitatedly as she pulled me outside. I was out of it for a few minutes before I recovered from the shock.
"Is Archie the one to be mated?" I asked, still in disbelief.
"It's Archie Addams; call the name right if you want to keep your head, young girl," she said warningly. She looked at me and saw that her reply was not what I wanted to hear.
"Yes, he is to be mated with Ethel Lane, and this is their mating ceremony," she said finally, and my world came crashing down. How on Earth could this happen? I was with him only yesterday, and just now, inside, he couldn't even spare me a glance.
My heart ached, and I ran. I didn't know where I was running, but I just ran towards the door, and Madam Maureen called after me, probably surprised by my sudden weird behavior. As I made for the door with tears in my eyes, I suddenly bumped into something hard; it was a man, probably a guest. The tears in my eyes made everything so blurry that I couldn't see properly.
"Watch where you are going," a harsh voice said to me.
I looked up, and all I could see were the deep maroon eyes staring at me sharply. It felt like these pairs of eyes could see right through me. He smelled of sweet spices and he had a dominating aura around him. He raised a brow as he noticed how hard I stared.
"I'm so sorry" I kindly apologized and excused myself but he held my hands and handed me an handkerchief with a T symbol engraved on it.
"Wipe your tears" he said coldly before walking away.
I stared at his back as he walked away from me. I sniffled into the handkerchief and it had his scent on it. It was calming but it couldn't take away the hurt in my heart.
I went home and cried my eyes out.
I was part of the low class omegas known as the Forsaken. It is said that we were abandoned by the Moon goddess hence the name. We didn't go through heat and were often mistreated. I was probably the only forsaken who experienced heat due to my pheromones imbalance and my father had ensured I kept it a secret. Most alphas wanted nothing to do with us Forsakens as it was seen as a disgrace to have a Forsaken as an official mate.
I cried myself to sleep, wondering how I would be able to survive such betrayal.
The next day, I woke up late with puffy eyes. Amelia had knocked at my door several times in an attempt to wake me up, but I had no energy to get up.
It was late afternoon, and I was really hungry, so I had to get up and eat something. I went to the kitchen and rummaged through, but only found an egg, half-eaten sausage, and two slices of bread. I had to make do with just that. I lazily prepared my food, and as I was about to eat, I felt a sharp pain at the back of my head. It was Amelia; she had hit me again.
"That egg was mine; who gave you permission to try to eat it?" she yelled.
I didn't have the strength to argue with her, so I decided to walk out.
"Jeez, you look like shit. What happened to you?" she said, grabbing my arms in an attempt to pull me back and keep me in place.
"Please let go; I'm not in the mood," I calmly said.
"I was only concerned, but you make it look like I'm bullying you," she said, pissed as she let go of my arms.
I was too hungry for whatever was about to happen, so I needed to get food into my system quickly.
As I made my way to the door, I got a text. It was from Archie, and he wanted us to meet up. My mind was clouded, and I couldn't think of anything else. I quickly got into a taxi and made my way to the location where he had asked to meet up.
It was the Grand Hotel, which was one of the most luxurious hotels around. I needed an explanation; something must have happened; he was probably forced because I know he really cared for me. I kept telling myself these things. I didn't stay till the end of the ceremony, as I was too sad. Maybe Archie didn't go through with it; maybe he changed his mind because of his love for me. I had hope in my heart as I rang the doorbell.
He opened up almost immediately, and as soon as I saw him, he gave me a big hug, and I hugged him back.
"Iris my love, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry," he sobbed.
"It's okay, I'm here now," I said, sobbing too.
We stayed like that for a while until he broke out of the embrace.
"Why were you at the ceremony? I told you to rest home, didn't I?" He said this while holding my face.
I blinked confusingly. Was that the first question he was supposed to be asking? I moved my face from his hands and gave him a little distance.
"You didn't want me to see what I saw; that's why you told me not to go out, right?" I said already irritated.
"The problem I have with you is that you never listen to my request. I asked you just to do a simple thing, and you couldn't. You almost ruined the ceremony," he said, looking me in the eyes.
"Is this really what we should be talking about? You were getting married to another omega while in a relationship with me, and me going out to work is your problem. If I hadn't gone, I probably would have never found out, right? Archie, answer me!" I yelled.
"What is so strange about an alpha mating with an omega? I'm a high-level alpha, and of course I need a high-level omega if I want my pack to be powerful," he said with a straight face and serious tone.
"What?" I was surprised. I couldn't believe what was coming out of his mouth. I stepped away from him as my heart ached. He came closer and held my hands.
"Look, Iris, I really love you, but you are a forsaken, and a forsaken will do my pack no good. What will people say if I'm mated to you? I am the heir to the Addams, and I need a high-level omega for a chance of birthing the Ultima. You know how important this is to me," he said, holding my hands tight.
"Please let go of me," I said almost in a whisper as I felt my legs trembling.
"Please listen to me. Iris, my official mate may be Ethel Lane, but that doesn't mean we should end what we have. I have always loved you, and I always will. Ethel is only needed for breeding, but we can continue as lovers," he said, tightening his grip.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Archie wanted me to be his secret lover. No way in hell.
"Let go of me, you douchebag; I will never be anyone's secret; I will not help you cheat on your mate. Since you want a better omega, you can get one, but I do not wish you happiness." I said angrily as I stormed out of his room, feeling nothing but disgust as he called out to me, but he didn't dare follow me out as he was probably afraid of being seen by others.
How could Archie have such a disgusting thought? If I hadn't known he was already mated yesterday, I would probably have been in the dark for a long time and become a homewrecker unknowingly.
I tried to gather my thoughts, but my legs were still weak and wobbly. What was this feeling? I was probably too hungry, but this was not the feeling of hunger. It was getting too hot, and I started losing strength in my knees. I had barely made it to the end of the long corridor close to the elevator before my knees gave in. I fell to the ground, and it was becoming hard to breathe.
Shit! I was in heat. Not at this time and place, please; I didn't even take my suppressant with me. I can't be found in this state.
Being a forsaken, my pheromone smell was not as strong as that of a higher omega in heat, but that didn't mean I was not in danger.
I struggled to pick myself up to get to the elevator. The elevator suddenly opened, and I saw a tall frame. I looked up and saw those Maroon eyes looking down at me. I immediately recognized them, as they were unforgettable. I couldn't take a proper look at his face because he suddenly covered his nose with his hands and looked away immediately, as if trying to avoid the smell of my pheromones.
"Please help me," I pleaded weakly.
"Do you know what you are asking of me?" he said as he raised a brow questioningly.
"Please help me," I said again before falling to the ground.
He picked me up from the ground and carried me through the long corridor. He smelled of sweet spices, and his scent calmed me down. This was not my first time experiencing heat, but this was the first time I was close to an alpha during my heat period. My body desired things it shouldn't, and I couldn't control it.
He took me to a room, which was probably his, and laid me on the bed.
"Rest up," he said curtly, and he attempted to leave.
I jumped up and enveloped him in an embrace. His scent was so calming, and I didn't want to let go.
"Please help me," I whispered into his ears softly.
"Little Omega, don't tempt me," he said in a low tone, almost in a whisper.
I buried my head on his shoulder so I could take in more of his scent.
He suddenly held my neck in place.
"You asked for this," he said before he dug his fangs through my skin and bit my nape. I felt a sharp pain, but shortly after, a feeling of ecstasy followed. My body got numb, and before I could feel anything else, I passed out.
I woke up feeling sore all over. My whole body ached, and I felt a sharp pain in my nape. I was still a little drowsy, but after opening my eyes fully, I discovered I was in an unfamiliar place.
"Where am I?" I asked myself, all confused.
"Obviously not in heaven," I heard a voice say almost immediately.
I looked up and saw a man sitting at the other end of the room, staring at me intensely. It was him, the one I saw in the elevator, but why was he here?
"Who are you?" I asked nervously while he just stared at me with a blank expression, which I couldn't read.
"You are forsaken, right?" He said finally.
"Yes, and so?" I replied.
He stood up and walked towards me.
"A forsaken in heat, now that's interesting. Have you heard of Phantom 20?"
"No , I haven't," I answered immediately.
"How come you haven't heard of what you have been taking?" he said sharply.
Now I was getting confused because I didn't understand where these questions and answers were leading, and I was more concerned about why I was in the same room as this man; his questions had occupied my mind so much that I didn't have time to recall what had transpired the previous day.
"Well, since you don't know, I'll have to explain it to you," he said with a sly smile as he sat down next to me on the bed.
"Phantom 20 is a new pill that is circulating among C-ranked omegas. It's made from the slick of higher omegas, and it can induce heat in a forsaken, but only temporarily," he said with a serious tone, and I could only help but nod, but I still didn't understand what this had to do with me.
"C-ranked omegas use these pills to attract low-grade alphas to mate, and did I mention these pills are illegal?" He said it, smiling grimacingly.
"So, what does this have to do with me?" I asked cautiously.
"You are quite thick-skinned; you are a forsaken who experienced heat, so it's obvious you used the phantom 20, but it only works on low-level alphas. I'm at level S, so for me to have been affected, it means you took a large amount of the drugs. Do you really want to be marked by an alpha so badly?" He asked with clear disgust in his voice.
"Wait a minute, I'm not using such drugs, and I only experience heat because of my pheromone imbalance. I don't even want to be marked by you, as I do not even know who you are."
I said I was trying my best to convince him.
"You still won't admit your wrongdoings," he said angrily this time.
"I, Leigh Troy, will never mark a low-level omega, especially not those who try to use tricks," he said scornfully.
"I was lucky to have been able to control myself while you tried to induce my rut. Whatever mark I placed on you is only temporary and will fade away soon, and I will never accept you as"
"What do you mean by mark? Did you mark me? You beast, how could you do this to me?" I said, cutting him off as I began to search for the spot that must have been bitten.
Now I remember. I was in heat, and this man took me to the room, but I was the one who clung to him. Shit, how embarrassing.
He just stared at me, completely bemused. But still, I'm sure my pheromones are not that strong, and he claimed to be a high-level alpha, so he could have easily controlled himself.
"It's all your fault!" I yelled. "You dogs can't just walk past an omega in heat, can you?" I said, looking him straight in the eyes.
"Are you blaming me? I can't believe this," he said, obviously shocked. "You are the one who seduced me, and you have the guts to say such. I could kill you right now," he said in a dominating tone, and his expression completely changed. He looked very angry, but I didn't take any pills. I was actually in heat, but how could I explain this when I'm probably the only one forsaken going through natural heat?
"I'm so sorry. This is all a misunderstanding, but how can you unmark me? I don't want to be marked by an unknown alpha," I said almost in tears.
"Unknown? Did you just call me an unknown alpha?" He sounded more angry this time, and all I could mutter was sorry.
"I know your type who tries to act all pitiful, but I won't fall for it. It was a temporary mark and will fade away soon. I will never complete a marking ritual with the likes of you, and a person like you can never be my mate," he said scornfully.
"Let me warn you: if you ever appear in front of me again, I promise to repay the evil you have done today," he said as he strided out of the room, banging the door loudly behind him.
