PROLOGUE.
"No!!" I yelled on top of my voice. "No please, don't kill me. Please!"
I never thought that.... I would beg for my life the way I did now. I always thought that...my life was worthless and that I would die with a smile on my face when that day comes.
When I was old enough to understand that death was something inevitable, I had always hoped that it would rain the day that I left the earth forever. I thought that if it rained the day I died, then all of the not so pleasant things I'd leave behind would be washed away along with the memory of myself.
But I couldn't feel that peace right now even though this was part my wish to die. The rain was falling heavily and my whole body was drenched in water. But why wasn't I happy? I'd always imagined that I'd close my eyes and just listen to the sound of water hitting my body and sliding down my face. I never thought about the fears and every other thing. I never thought of how much I'd miss him.
Just two hours ago I'd been planning a surprise for him. He was always the one surprising me with all the good things I could never imagine. With gifts and so much more. I only wanted to do one thing today. But I went out of my way. He had warned me but I crossed the line, and now I can only imagine how angry he's going to be.
My hands are soar from the ropes tightly binding my wrists together, yanked behind the wooden chair I was tied against. The ropes are tied around my legs too and they just hurt so much.
My black blazer had been torn away, leaving my white button up on. The water had poured on my body for far too long that my white dress now seemed transparent and sticked to my body, putting my breasts in full display. But that was my least concern.
My only concern was getting out of here alive. And away from the masked man who just stepped into the room with a huge knife in his hand.
I'd been blindfolded the whole time but the instance I heard him approach, the blindfold was yanked away.
"Please.... Please I didn't do anything...." I begged hopelessly.
In a full speed, he reaches me and grabs my hair, yanking my face up to him. I can't see his face due to the mask he had on, but the eye hole was wide enough for me to see his eyes clearly. I could almost swear that I've seen those set of eyes before.
"Please...... " I cried.
"Yeah, you didn't do anything wrong, Luna but you're a bait. You hear that? You're a fucking bait!!!"
"No! Please please... I'm sorry..... Please let me go!"
"Shut the fuck up whore!! Where's your Alpha now? Where's your fucking Alpha right now?!!"
"Right here....." A foreign voice speaks from behind my captor and he abruptly lets go of me and turned around.
I could barely see clearly due to the rain but there was no way I could miss that.
There he stood in the distance, a wild beastly man taking a fighting stance as he faced us. His eyes are glowing red and there's this.....anger in his eyes. His eyes are laced on my captor first before they shifted to me. And just then I saw it. I saw the guilt and pain in them. But my heart broke for him. Because he knew exactly what he was walking into. He shouldn't be here. He's going to die.
I started to shake my head in disapproval but he quickly looks away.
"You do not go after my woman, Ashtray." he growled so hard, I felt the ground vibrate underneath my bare legs.
Ashtray laughs heartily, dipped his hand into his pocket and slowly retrieved the only thing that could kill my Alpha. My eyes goes wide and I started to shake my head violently at him.
"Damon no! "
Someone from the back yanks a celotape over my mouth, muffling my screams. Damon sneers from the far end, the color of his eyes deepening faster as he lowered himself to the ground.
Out of nowhere, Ashtray's men jumped on him in their wolf forms. Damon moves out of the way quickly and snaps each of the two wolves neck without even as much as trying. Then he takes out his gun and shot the rest of his men who were coming at him. It always amused me how he's able to do that in split seconds.
Damon slowly picks himself from the floor and stands straight, wriggling his right arm to straighten his rumpled suit. I saw the sickening smile that crossed his lips as he watched Ashtray from the distance.
"You wanna try now?" Damon speaks confidently.
I shook my head disapprovingly. He should get out of here. I needed to tell him what was behind Ashtray but I couldn't.
Ashtray lifts his arms and spread them apart, inviting Damon over. No. This cannot happen. I started to writ violently on my seat, hoping to get Damon's attention but to no avail. Damon tosses his gun away and picks up a long fighting knife from the distance.
Damon lounges for Ashtray with his knife but he quickly dodged it and spedfast through the rain to the other side. Damon follows. For a long moment I couldn't see them, I could only hear their voices and the sound of metals. Then they came into view again and I saw Ashtray hit the ground. Damon tries to slit his throat but he speeds off before the knife could reach him.
Damon lounges for him again but without his knowledge, Ashtray had found a perfect stance and turned around. He speeds back to Damon and injects him with this venom that would automatically kill him, forcing Damon into a stop.
I wanted to scream out his name but I couldn't. I cried hard but it comes off muffled. Tears instantly dropped down my eyes.
Ashtray starts advancing towards me but soon stopped before he could reach me. His eyes grows wide and glassy like he'd seen a ghost behind me. I watched closely to see the thin line that had formed around his neck and the blood that trickled down.
He holds his neck, causing more blood to ooze out. Then he fell to the ground. Dead.
Damon stands behind him, his wolf eyes slowly dimming as he watched me, one hand holding the side of his stomach that he'd been injected with the venom. His eyes are apologetic but I wanted him to know that he shouldn't be.
"I'm sorry..." He managed to say before he dropped to the floor, having reduced from his wolf size to his human size.
"No!!!" I muffle screamed.
The sound of shoe heals clicking against the translucent marble floor around me resounded in my ears as I sat patiently on the cold chair. Every second that passed, my fingers gripped harder around the brown paper in my hands, laid gently against the front of my legs. I hated how my knees were exposed to the harsh cold in this room. What kind of airing system do they have here? I was never a skirts person, I was more of a jeans person but if you needed a job, especially from a company called Alpha Line, you've got to stick to their dressing preference.
Alpha Line company was a company that dealt with all things and owned many other branches around the world. It dealt solely with creating digital products and provision of online courses. It was also the highest and most popular company that sold the nicest print-on-demand outfits and most of all, it dealt with physical and online fashion boutique.
The very first day I found out about Alpha Line, I'd been freaked to know that a company as famous and successful as this would merely be making it's money from fashion. And what was more freaking? When I curiously dug more about the sole owner and CEO of this company after an ad of him popped up while I was surfing through his website, and I discovered he was indeed not what I was expecting.
Damon Matteo.
Damon Matteo was the sole owner of Alpha Line and no matter how I searched, I never found any family related to him on the internet. Damon Matteo was a mystery to me and to every other people as I've seen from comments during my wild searches of him. Images of him were all over the Net but many claims to have never seen him physically. Damon Matteo looked good, a bit too handsome for his own good. He looked tall, probably measuring up to 6'5 feet. He had hair that was stylishly brushed forward. His eyes had different shades of green, brown and blue from the many pictures of him that I've seen so it was hard to point out the true color of his eyes. On all of the pictures he was barely trying hard to smile at the cameras and on the others that felt taken when he wasn't aware, he kept a straight focused face.
There wasn't really much I could find about him except the fact that he was looking for someone to hire for a particular job. It said an errand person and there wasn't really much details provided after that.
So I decided I wanted to give this job another try. I've been haunting for a decent job for the past four years after my graduation from NYU but so far I'd never been lucky to even get a single job. I'd made up my mind to stop job haunting here in France and move to the UK to start anew when I heard about the mighty Alpha Line looking to hire someone. I knew I didn't have a chance because countless people were going to be running to work at this company so why would Damon Matteo ever think to choose me? But on my scheduled interview date, I still dressed up in my newly purchased grey suits and walked into the massive skyscraper to be interviewed.
I'd made sure to pull my hair into a ponytail as was recommended by the person who was in contact with me before this interview date got fixed. I needed to wear office skirt that stopped above my knees. Everything was crazy but I wanted to give it a try anyway.
I looked to the side to see everyone running around, working. Everyone were so serious with what they were doing, it instantly gave me chills. Maybe It was just the cold blasting in from their airlines or something.
"Miss Olivera?" I heard my name and snapped back towards the receptionist table immediately. There stood the woman that I presumed to be Damon Matteo's P.A, half of her body still inside the room she'd just walked out of.
"Yes?" I rose up immediately, reaching to adjust my bag straps on my right shoulder.
I saw how she looked down, then hesitantly stepped out completely and started towards me. I saw the worry on her face. Something was obviously wrong.
"Is everything alright?" I asked.
"Um..... Yes. There's been a bit of a problem," she started "you see, Mr. Matteo will not be able to see you today."
My face literally dropped.
"Not at all for that matter." She completed.
"Hah?" I gasped, my shoulders slumping in disbelief. What? I have seated here for the past 2 hours waiting for this interview and he can't see me? Just like that?
Before I could say another word, I saw someone stepping out through the same door this woman had stepped out from. But I hadn't looked fast enough to see his face. By the time I looked up, I was met with his side view as he continued to walk towards the elevator, three men dressed in suits following close behind him. Damon Matteo is fixing his suit button, his back now fully turned to me.
I didn't even realize when I let out a loud scoff, my hand dropping from the envelope in my other hand.
"Excuse me!" I yelled at him before I could stop myself. I felt angry. How could he just walk out carelessly like he didn't keep me here waiting for the past hours?!
I heard the lady gasp before me and couldn't care less.
"Hey, Mr. Matteo, I'm talking to you!" I called louder, my eyes watching him as he stopped right before he pushed the elevator button. Everyone in the room stopped to watch me.
My heart drummed in my chest as I waited for him to turn around and face me. I was preparing myself mentally to face someone who just kept me waiting for hours? Man up, girl. I dragged a handful of air into my lungs and waited.
"Someone has been here waiting for you all day!" I blurted out "we all got stuffs to do too, you know...."
"I'm sorry you need to leave" the woman beside me said as she tried to grab my hand but I quickly wiggled out of her grip.
By the time he turned around, taking his time of course, I was silently gasping, my heart racing inside my ribcage.
Damon Matteo was hotter than what the internet had shown us. They lied to us.
"I'm sorry, what?" His voice was deep and intentional, his eyes watching me like a hawk as he took slow calculated steps towards me.
"I'm sorry Mr. Matteo, she was just leaving." The lady speaks again."
"No I wasn't. " I replied "and I said that I've been waiting out here for the past two hours, how can you just discard me like that, walk out and pretend like I'm not even here?!"
I wanted badly to look away from his burning eyes but I feared I would lose my cool. What he did wasn't right and I'm gonna tell him that.
But he doesn't say anything. Instead, he started advancing towards me, only stopping a few inches away from me. At that slow moment, I saw his eyes and felt the chills. There was something strange in them. But I refused to be intimidated.
"You were asked to leave, what's the fucking problem?" His voice was venomous, the type that would sting your heart without leaving the slightest idea about what the fuck you did wrong.
I dragged air into my lungs quickly before replying "the problem is that you left me waiting here all day, only to ask me to leave without even interviewing me."
If i wasn't paying so much attention to his lips, I would have missed the twitch at the corner of his lips as he smiled, only for a split nano second before he spoke again "I already hired." He said effortlessly, wounding my ego. Then his eyes roamed over me mockingly, from head to toe before his eyes found my face again and he grinned. A mocking grin that made me wish the ground could just open up and swallow me.
"Let's go." He said to his bodyguard-looking-men before turning around and walking towards the elevator, leaving everybody watching after him and me who stood there like an idiot.
I watched him until his back disappeared and the elevator closed, our eyes watching each other for the very last seconds before the elevator doors shut close. Shut me out.
The silence in the room was deafening and at the same time reminding me of how I'd just humiliated myself in front of everyone here (there are about fifty of them). I've never felt so insulted before.
But I blinked it away and wished everyone would go back to their busy works and stop watching me as I made my way towards the elevator.
I was done.
Damon Matteo.
".... however roads have been blocked around the main lands leading in mechuset. The thunderstorm seems to have done a lot of damage and there's been a report that a lot of waterside warehouses were affected. These includes the Alpha Line wine vine....."
"Fuck" I cursed again as I watched the news on my flat screen tv from above. I reached a hand up to find my necktie and tried to undo it as it suddenly suffocated me. I didn't know which suffocated me more. The necktie or the news broadcasting on the TV.
Everything I've built in that sick town In Italy was all going to ruins now. I gave a deep growl. I wanted to vent my anger. And I knew this wasn't the right place to do so. People were everywhere and they would learn of the monster that I am.
"Your flight to Madagascar is ready sir." I heard Julio's voice speak from behind me again, causing me to growl again. I'd completely forgotten about this trip after this news came on a few minutes ago. And now I'm gonna have to reschedule.
The door pushed open and Meredith walked in, uncertainty in her eyes as she saw my angry face.
"Uh.... Sir, the lady is still waiting for you outside. Would you still like to see her? Or would you like her to come some other time."
Moving back to my desk, I replied "it won't be necessary, ask her to leave."
After Meredith left, I picked what I needed and walked out, my bodyguards following behind me. I decided to stop at my house first and think about what to do first. I needed to be in Madagascar, I also needed to be at Italy tomorrow. Fuck.
As I walked out with Julio and the rest of my men, I hadn't paid much attention to anybody in particular until I heard the words being thrown at me, forcing me into a stop. I turned to see a tall woman.... I and watched her. Apparently she'd been the woman who'd come for interview. I didn't pay much attention, could barely hear what she's saying exactly. But as the minutes passed I came to the conclusion that she was angry. But I wasn't having it. I wasn't in the mood to be calm right now or to undo this. I was getting sicker and sicker the longer I stayed here.
"I already hired." Was the only words that came to mind to tell her before turning and leaving. She was angry but I didn't care. I wasn't in a mood to be calm right now.
"Take me home." I said to the driver as I sat down on my car's back seat with Julio. He puts his iPad on and spoke as soon as the car sped into the road.
"Sir I have a report on your warehouse in Italy," he said as he read something from his tab.
"What?" I asked curiously, a part of me burning up in anger as I anticipated the news.
"It's your brother," Julio said as he looked up at me. "Landon had been spotted there throughout yesterday. He's the only suspect for now."
I looked forward with a soft groan, more anger building up in my head. Landon. That prick.
One week later, I was flying to Madagascar, determined to put everything that's been happening behind me. After much investigation on my warehouse, I came to the better conclusion that Landon was behind everything that happened even if there wasn't any solid evidence to pin him with. But I knew my brother better. Landon may be my older brother but he has never wanted anything good for me. It has always been that way since our parents died.
And I was determined to come to the root of their death by going back to where it all started. Madagascar.
I arrived early in the morning. I'd asked Julio to stay back and join me in a few days time. For the time being I was going to take care of the old cabin myself. I groaned harshly once I stepped into the creepy house. I should have hired that woman. Skipper. Skipper. I repeated her name in my head. Odd name for a girl as beautiful as her. I'd read her resumé over a hundred times to have her name stuck in my head.
The idea was to hire someone to come down here with me. Someone new. Someone different. Someone who didn't know who I truly was.
"Pretty nice place if you ask me." A voice said from behind me and I turned away from the wall I was facing enjoying the view outside to see the man standing with his side leaned against the balcony door, his arms folded across his chest, his black long sleeves and pants fitting perfectly and a perfect smirk on his lips. Casper.
Casper was my old time friend. He was fond of the only habit of disappearing. He only showed up when there's a problem. Which made me ask what I asked the instant I saw him. "What the fuck is it now?"
Casper was known by women for his walking style. Asides the fact that he had his signature look of dressing up in leather jackets, he walked with a smirk on his lips at all times, his chest pushed out as he walked.
"A little Birdy told me that you're up to no good, friend." He said as he crossed the room to me, stopping to grab the bottle of alcohol on a table and pouring a glass for himself "so I'm here to tell you that you've managed to climbe up with witches radar."
"What are you talking about?" I asked confused.
He drinks from his glass before looking at me and saying "obviously someone has to explain why the hell I saw Elizabeth Matteo leaving Celeste's house yesterday night."
My heart stopped instantly, his words ringing in my ears.
"So tell me Damon, " he said as he set the glass cup down "what is your dead mother doing in town?"
That's impossible. My mother died twenty two years ago. I saw her get lowered into the ground. I watched her take her last breath. I watched the life leave her eyes. I watched them turn icy stone.
Casper slowly advanced towards me before he added "and it has become a concern to the coven about your identity. You're a hybrid, friend." Then he swung at me and I dodged fast, causing him to collide into the wall.
"Don't make this any harder, Damon." He growled as he slowly shifted into his wolf form.
I didn't understand all of this and I was finding it hard to comprehend everything at once. But I knew I wasn't going to let Casper beat me so easily. So I shifted with a loud wail and ran into him, pushing him off the building and crashing outside.
