Chapter 1
Selene stood at the sink, scrubbing pots and pans at the same time with beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
She was tired and her arms ached, but she knew she had to keep working.
She swiped the tears from her eyes sadly, trying to focus on the task at hand.
At that moment, Selene heard the brisk sounds of footsteps approaching and her heart sank. She knew it was the chief maid, Josefina, coming to check on her progress.
"Aint you don yet?!" Josefine shouted angrily as she entered the kitchen. "You're working too slowly. Do you want to get beaten again?"
"N-no," Selene shook her head, trying to hold back her tears as she quickened her pace.
Josefina's eyes blackened with hatred and disgust as she sneered, "You are just a worthless, pathetic slave!"
Selene's body shook frightfully as she felt Josfina moving closer to her, she pushed by fastening her work so as to avoid a hit from her.
However, one of the plates she was rinsing, slipped and crashed on the ground.
Josfine's expression turned from sneering to pure fury, and she marched over to Selene. "You stupid, clumsy oaf!" she shouted, her voice full of rage.
"I'm sorry, I'm... I'm sorry," Selene was shaking, her palms joined in a pleading manner.
"You broke the plate!" Josefina was so raged and she grabbed a fistful of Selene's hair, yanked her head back, and slapped her hard across the face.
"Mmhmm," Selene winced in pain, but she didn't cry out. She knew if she showed any weakness, it would anger Josefina and she'd only be more brutal.
"You can't even do the simplest of tasks without breaking something. You're nothing but a useless waste of space!" Josefina screeched, her furiousness was evident.
Selene quivered as Josfine aggressively shoved her to the floor, and marched her stomach repeatedly.
"You are just a piece of waste, idiot!" Josephine spat irritatingly, while Selene kept groaning under her feet.
Selene knew better than to fight back, but it was hard to take the abuse without lashing out. She bit her tongue, trying to numb herself.
"Clean up this mess!" Josefina shrieked, her voice sharp as broken glass. "And there will be no food for you tonight! You can go hungry for all I care!"
She turned on her heel and stormed out of the kitchen, leaving Selene alone in a sea of shattered dishes and tears.
With trembling hands, she pulled herself up, cleaned up the shattered pieces of the plate, and wiped up the broken fragments with a cloth.
Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, and her face stung from where Josfine had slapped her. She felt drained and exhausted, but she forced herself to finish washing the dishes.
As she worked, she tried to push Josfine's cruel words out of her mind.
Despite her punishment, the thought of Scott, her younger brother, crossed Selene's mind and she worried about him staying on empty stomach . She couldn't bear the thought of her brother going hungry.
So, after she was done with the kitchen chores, she checked around to be sure nobody was watching.
With cautious movements, Selene sneaked some bread and cheese from the kitchen and hurried off to find Scott in their usual spotShe always knew it was a risky move, but she had no choice but to do it. Scott needed her.
Their childhood was marred by tragedy. Her parents, who were Gammas in the pack, had been killed in a rogue attack. Ever since then, she and her younger brother, Scott had been treated like nothing but petty slaves.
The pack malevolently mistreated them, making them do all the hardest and dirtiest work.
Scott had been taken by the Jones, the cruelest Betas in the pack, and she could only see him at secret meetings in the woods.
Ever since their misery started, Selene longed for a better life for her and her brother. But it seemed like an impossible dream.
Selene sighed emotionally as she remembered the moments when she secretly met Scott; he always seemed happy but she could see through his facade. His eyes are sunken and his skin pale. And her heart broke at the sight of him.
Arriving at their usual secret spot, Selene didn't see any sight of Scott. She decided not to read the meanings of it and waited patiently.
Hours passed by, and she waited and waited, but Scott never arrived at their secret meeting spot.
"Where is he?" She muttered, looking around the surroundings but to no avail.
Selene grew more and more uneasy with each passing hour. She had no idea what could have happened and there was a pricking feeling in her chest that heightened her worry.
She got the hint that knew something must have happened, but she didn't know what to do. Having no other choice, Selene headed to the Jones manor to see if she could her younger brother.
It was a difficult decision, but she had no choice.
"I hope I find him sooner," she braced herself as she approached the manor, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew she was taking a big risk, but she had to know what had happened to Scott.
Selene took a deep breath and knocked on the door of the Jones's manor. After a few minutes, Mrs. Jones opened the door, her expression souring when she saw Selene.
"How dare you show your disgusting face here?!" She snapped, "What do you want?"
"I'm sorry to bother you, ma'am," Selene trembled, she swallowed hard, steadying her voice.
"Whatever. Speak now!" Mrs Jones shouted.
Selene swallowed hard, forcing herself to be brave as she said, "I'm sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if I could see my brother for a moment, it's urgent."
"He's not in," Mrs. Jones scowled at her.
"W-what?" Selene muttered surprisingly, and she became more restless.
Just then, a young girl came out from the shadows of the manor's doorway. Beautiful and putting on expensive clothing,It was Vennesa, the daughter of Mrs. Jones, and she was glaring at Selene with a look of pure hatred.
"You better tell your stupid brother to stay away from here!" she said, her voice filled with venom. "If he ever comes back, he'll regret it!"
Selene was taken aback by Vennesaa's anger. She knew the girl was spoiled and entitled, but she had never seen her so vicious.
Where is Scott?
"Get out of here, ew!" Vanessa's eyes were filled with rage and revulsion.
"T-thank you, ma'am!" Selene clutched the food to her chest and hurried away from the Jones's manor, and a ripple of panic washed over her.
Where could Scott be? Why hadn't he come to meet her? She had no idea what to do.
Abruptly, Selene heard a soft voice calling her name. She quickly turned and saw Ember, her closest friend, and paused.
"Ember!" She exclaimed.
"You are looking for Scott, correct?" Ember rushed over to her.
Selene's eyes widened with shock, "How... how do you know-"
"I know where Scott is," Ember worriedly answered and Selene's heart skipped a beat.
"Where is he?" She panicked.
"H-he was... w-was involved in an accident with-" Ember shuttered but was cut short by Selene.
"What!" Selene gasped shockingly, the food she held fell and crashed onto the ground. "Where is he?! With whom did he get involved with?"
Ember was hesitant as she replied, "A-an Alpha."
"An Alpha?!" Selene's eyes widened, staggering her backward with her face turning pale.
Chapter 2
"Who is the Alpha?" Selene asked urgently.
Ember's eyes lowered to the ground, unable to talk as she fiddled with her fingers nervously.
"Please speak Ember!" Selene frantically pressed on, she grabbed her shoulders, shaking her.
"Alpha Asher!" Ember shouted, then hissing in pain as Selene slowly moved away from her.
"What did you just do?" Selene was shocked, and a cold shiver ran down her spine.
The air around they became intense, and
"I know this would-" Embee attempted to hold her but Selene stepped back.
"Alpha Asher?" Her breath hitched in her throat.
Ember's words had hit her like a punch to the gut, and she felt her mind reeling.
Everyone knew Asher, he was a notorious Alpha who ruled with an iron fist. He was known far and wide, even among those who had never met him, as a ruthless man.
They both had a thing in the past.
Selene couldn't believe that Scott could be mixed up with such a person, and it made her feel as if she about to crumble into a thousand pieces.
Asher was the last person, she wanted her brother to be involved with. How the hell did Scott get involved with him?
Without further thought, Selene dashed to the pack hospital with her chest rising and falling.
"Selene!" Ember called after her, she went after her but Selene was already gone.
In the blink of an eye, Selene already arrived at the pack hospital.
She hurried, ignoring the curious mixed with hostile glances sent her way by the pack members.
"Scott!" Selene called at the top of her voice as she reached his ward.
Her heart was pounding in her chest, and beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
However, Selene shrunk on her track, and her eyes widened as she came face to face with him.
It was the devil; Alpha Asher!
He stood before her, tall and imposing. He was dressed in all black, from his tailored suit to his polished shoes. His dark hair was swept back from his face, revealing the sharp angles of his features.
Asher was the portrait of elegance and power, but something about his eyes made her uneasy.
Selene had known Asher since high school, he had always been a notorious bully, picking on her at every weakest chance and calling her weak.
Asher had always been a thorn in her side; he was her worst nightmare.
"Long time no see, Selene." Asher's eyes glinted and Selene tried not to let her unease show, but she felt like she was shrinking under Asher's gaze.
She had been dreading this moment when she would come face to face with the man who had caused so much fear and panic in her heart. And now, there he was, standing before her.
The air grew tense and unsettled.
"Aint you going to say something?" Asher raised his brow, looking at her with mischief in his eyes as if he was enjoying her discomfort.
She was his mate. He knew she could feel the mate bond between them, it was apparent but she was trying to ignore it.
Years ago, Selene had stood up to him, refusing to be intimidated and unnerved by him. She had been the only person who had ever dared to slap him and call him a "poor loser" when he asked her out.
Now, here she was, a slave, and his mate.
The tables had turned, and he seemed to take pleasure in it. Isn't that ironic?
"Selene?" Asher drawled lazily, snapping her out of her trance.
Selene avoided his intense gaze, trying to hide her anxiety. She ignored him and entered their ward.
He was her mate, and she hated that he was trying to use the mate bond to get to her.
When Selene entered the ward, the pack doctor with few nurses was attending to Scott, and her eyes teared up when she saw him.
Scott lay on the hospital bed, he was unconscious with his temple bandaged. The life-supporting machine was beeping beside his bed.
"Doc, is my brother going to be okay?" Selene faced the pack doctor and asked the doctor, her voice barely above a whisper.
The pack doctor paused and removed his gloves, he handed them to one of the nurses before they left.
He faced Selen and shook his head with his expression grave. "It's not looking good," he answered.
Selene had difficulty swallowing, as she covered her face with her palms and breathed sharply.
"To be honest with you, the injuries he sustained from the accident are quite severe. He would not have survived without Alpha Asher's intervention by bringing him here," the pack doctor continued.
Selene body shook with sobs, she peeled her palms away from her face as she struggled to keep her tears on bay that threatened to spill over.
"Doc, w-what about the hospital bills, I... I don't have-" Selene was trying to explain, and she hated herself for being unable to.
"Oh, you don't have to worry, Selene" The pack doctor's words took Selene by surprise.
"Why? What do you mean, Doc?" She inquired, and she became confused.
"Alpha Asher agreed to pay for Scott's surgery and ordered we should provide his every need till the surgery was over," the pack doctor elucidated.
"What? H-he did say that?" Selene was stunned, her voice filled with disbelief.
The pack doctor nodded in confirmation, and Selene felt a a mix of emotions well up inside her.
She was grateful that Asher was willing to help. She knew he was his mate, but because of their past experiences, it didn't quite sit well with her.
Nonetheless, she sniffed, bracing herself as she walked out of the ward.
Selene headed to where Asher stood as if he was deliberately waiting for her. She shivered as she felt an ominous aura around him.
She could also feel the mate bond, the need to be around him and it was irresistible.
Why would the moon goddess pair her with him?
"Thank you," Selene thanked him, staring at him in the eye, "Thank you for helping my brother."
Asher smirked cunningly, but there was something dark and predatory in his eyes.
"You're welcome," he said, his voice low and alluring. "But there is something I want in return."
Selene became uncomfortable, feeling she should have known there was a catch.
"W-what is it?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Asher leaned closer to her, cupping her cheek and she trembled as she felt electrifying sensations radiating through her skin.
She just felt the mate bond, and she knew he felt it too when he touched her.
Their standing proximity was too close, and it made a cold shiver run down her spine.
Asher's mischievous eyes bored into hers; as if he owned her.
"I want you to be mine!"
Chapter 3
"What?" Selene was stunned, and she shivered as Asher's eyes danced on her body.
"You're not bad, you Serene, are enough," said Asher as he smiled darkly.
His smile was alluring and mesmerizing, but she would never allow that to blind her.
Selene felt a surge of indignation and disgust. She would not allow herself to be used by someone who had caused her so much pain.
Even though he was her mate.
Selene wasn't surprised by Asher's demands, after all, he would always be that notorious bully she knew back in high school.
"No, I refuse," Selene said, her voice firm. "I will not be yours. I refuse to be a pawn in your game."
Asher's smile instantly vanished and altered into a hard expression. Selene's still the strong-headed lassie he had known back in high school.
He, Asher, could have all the women in the world without batting an eye -but not Selene Clark.
Why is that? Even now that she has become a lowlife and a slave, she is still proving stubborn!
Why can't he have her?
She was his mate, after all.
"I see, you still want to play hard to get huh?" He gave her a sharp look, it was enough to send her 6 feet down the ground.
"My word still stands, I won't be yours," Selene continued to refuse.
The scowl on Asher's face vanished, crossing his hand behind his back.
"No matter how you refuse me now, I'm sure that you won't be able to refuse me for too long and you know what I mean, Selene." He sneered.
Selene clenched her fists, she knew he was indirectly referring to the mate bond between them.
He was an alpha, and it would be hard to resist him when he tried to summon her through the bond.
At that moment, Ember walked into the scene and stopped beside Selene.
"Alpha Asher!" She curtsied by bowing her head before Asher.
Asher barely gave Ember a second glance before turning his attention back to Selene.
"Don't worry," he chuckled, a smug grin on his face as he uttered. "If you ever change your mind, you know where to find me."
Selene didn't know what to say, she was upset as she watched him Asher away elegantly.
Before Ember could say something to her, Selene already strode and entered the ward.
She found Scott lying in his bed, she was surprised when she saw his face stained with tears.
"Scott!" Selene rushed over to the bed, and he looked up at her pleadingly.
"I'm so sorry, Selene," his voice trembling. "I didn't mean for this to happen."
"Hey, nothing was ever your fault okay?" Selene felt a wave of pity for her brother even though she couldn't comprehend his pleading.
"S-Selene, it was my fault," Scott stammered, his voice thick with emotion. "And I'm so sorry, I never meant to make you feel worthless. You're the most important person in the world to me."
It was then it dawned on Selene. It was apparent that he heard the conversations between her and Asher earlier.
With trembling hands, Scott reached into his pocket and gradually pulled out a small, wrapped gift.
"I got this for you ," he told her, his voice barely above a whisper. "For your birthday. I wanted to get you this before it's too late, but I got involved in an accident with alpha Asher."
Selene eyes watered as she accepted the gift from Scott, her heart aching as she stroked it.
Scott got into an accident just to gladden her, and now he's in health danger because of him.
After a few moments of sobbing, Selene's shoulders slumped in defeat as she told Scott.
"Scott, I have no choice but to agree to Asher's terms," she said and his eyes widened.
"No! You can't do that sister," Scott exclaimed, he was dismayed. "I will be fine, you don't deserve to be used like this!"
"I have to do this for you," Selene sniffed, staring down at the gift. "What about the bills? I can't put you are in danger. You're all I have left."
Scott gaped at Selene in disbelief. "I can't believe you're doing this," he said, his voice quivering.
"I promised father and mother that I will take good care of you," she looked up tearfully at him.
"Shit! You don't know what you're getting into sister," Scott told her, "Asher is worse then you knew him. I've heard stories about his temper, and his cruelty. I don't want to see you get hurt."
Selene knew that Scott was concerned about her, but she couldn't risk his life.
"I know this is hard," Ember spoke, announcing her presence.
Selene sniffed tearfully, and she cleaned her nose as she held Scott's gift to her chest. He was the only one who remembered her birthday.
"You know, being with Asher won't be so bad," Ember said, trying to reassure Selene. "Maybe he's not as bad as people say. Maybe they're just exaggerating."
"I wish there was some truth in that," Selene muttered, not convinced by Ember's reassurances but she knew she was only trying to be supportive.
She had heard the rumors since Asher's return, she had heard about their temper, his bullying, and his merciless ways were spreading like wildfire.
Selene became disturbed about what might happen if she agreed to Asher's terms. But she couldn't risk her brother's life, no matter what.
"I appreciate you, Ember, for making efforts to make me feel better," she sighed.
Ember's face fell, biting her lips, "I'm sorry," she said, feeling helpless.
"It's fine," Selene whispered, as she rubbed her shoulder.
Selene inhaled and exhaled, she had always known that Asher was a mischief since they were teens.
He had always been the one to cause problems, to stir up trouble, and to make life difficult for her.
Now, as she made her way straight to the pack house to see him, she wondered if she had made a terrible mistake by accepting his offer.
But it was too late to back out now. She had to see this through, for her brother's sake.
Selene took a deep breath and approached his office, steeling herself for what was to come.
When she entered, she felt a sense of foreboding wash over her. She found him sitting at his desk, his eyes fixed on a stack of papers.
"I accept your offer," she said, her voice trembling.
Asher's gaze snapped up to meet hers, his expression unreadable which sent her heart racing.
"Very well. Let's begin."
