"You have been prohibited by Madam Bennett from entering the Bennett's mansion. Please leave, Miss Marsden."
"I'm here for Spencer. Can you please reach out to him?"
"I'm sorry..."
"I'm not go...going to leave until I see him, Mr." She tried to sound stern.
"Fine. I'll give him a call. You stay here and make sure you don't take a step in, okay?"
Bree nodded. In less than five minutes, she saw Spencer running in her direction and closed the distance between them. His hands fell on her shoulders gently and looked her over from head down to her toes in concern.
"What's wrong, baby? Why are you here all of a sudden? Come this way." He held her tiny wrist and led her outside the mansion's enormous gates.
"I'd no idea you'd show up. Are you hurt? Did your mother hit you again?" He asked, his eyes scanning her body for any trace of injury.
"Let's break up."
"What?"
"Didn't you hear me? I said, "Let's break up."
He chuckled.
"Come on, you know how cute you look when you're angry. I love that pout but put it down. I know you're angry that I didn't text before going to bed yesterday but you see, Mother had me occupied with her work. I'm sorry, okay? Give me a smile." He stepped forward but she backed away.
"I'm not angry because of that."
"Then why, hmm? I'm ready to drop to my knees and apologize a thousand times if that will make you smile."
"Stop saying those words. I just want to break up. I'm fed up with this relationship and I don't want to do this anymore. I've been holding back from saying this for the past weeks but I no longer can. We're incompatible. We..we should go our separate ways."
"What do you mean we're incompatible? We've been dating for years."
Seeing how serious she looked, Spencer frowned.
"Wh...what are you saying? It's me, Bree. It's your Spence. What the hell are you talking about? Look at me, baby. Tell me, did your mother put you to this? Or my mother? Was it my mother?"
She shook her head avoiding eye contact with him. Her eyes were fixated on his chest only.
"Then why? If it's about my mum or our families, we can elope. We'll go far away from this place and no one will be able to reach us. We made a plan already, Bree." He grasped her arms tightly and continued, desperately. "We're going to elope and get married. We'll get married and start a family. That sounds great, right? Just the both of us and our babies in our home.
I told you I'll leave everything for you. Everything. This mansion, the company, my family, Everything. Just say yes and we'll leave. We're in love, Bree."
She broke away from him abruptly, shoving him away so strongly that he staggered back and nearly toppled over. He looked at her as if she was taking his soul away with so much hurt in his heart. He heard his heart shattering into pieces at the words that followed.
"Stop being stupid, Spencer. Stop acting like a child and grow up for once. No, I don't love you, I don't love you at all. I can never love someone like you." She breathed heavily. "You're speaking about eloping to a faraway place, probably a small town, and starting a family. Have you thought of how we're going to survive when we don't even have a job or money?"
"We...we."
"No right? You haven't thought of this."
"I'll do anything to make sure we survive. I'm good at programming. I'll find a small job and we'll survive."
"This is what I'm talking about. I don't want to live in a small house and do menial jobs. I want a lavish lifestyle. I want lots of servants and cars, I want to party and of course, I want a bigger mansion than this. You're too little of a man to achieve these things on your own.
Spencer turned to look at the mansion behind him.
"I found a better man than you. Someone who can afford better things with his own money and not his mama's money."
He shook his head in denial, refusing to believe that the girl before him was the love of his life. This wasn't the girl he knew like the back of his palm. The girl he has spent so many years with. The girl he couldn't imagine his life without. He hurried to her and hugged her tightly as little drizzles of rain fell on them.
"This isn't you, Bree. You don't want these things. You don't want big houses, servants, or gold. You don't want them. Don't forget what we share, Bree. Our love. Please, tell me what's wrong," he cried, little droplets of tears dropping from his eyes.
Bree struggled to push him away and when she finally succeeded, her palm made contact with his cheek he swore it wasn't the slap that caused his tears to flow freely mixing with the rain, it was the thoughts behind the hit and the strange act of the girl that he has known and loved since elementary school.
"Don't come close again. What we shared? You know nothing. There was nothing special about what we shared and the nights we spent together. I only used you for my pleasure. I wanted to see how it tastes. I was only curious, nothing else. You've amused me for a while but I'm bored with you."
"Bree... You love me."
"I was only playing a game with you. I've learned everything I can from you. I can now find a more wealthy man to settle with. I can't love someone like you, Spencer." She took a deep breath. "You know, he's far better than you. Your cousin, Eli. He's way better at everything. Schooling, business, everything." She hit him in the spot she knew it would hurt the most and she knew she succeeded as his lips parted in shock. His eyes filled with tears.
Wiping the tears and rain off her face, she continued.
"Besides, I know you have someone else aside from me. You love someone else and you have been lying all this while too."
"That's not true. You know that I love only you, Bree. I love you with all my heart.
"Doesn't matter anymore. We're adults and I now know what I want."
Spencer shook his head, not believing this was really happening. That the love of his life was going to leave him.
"No, Bree. You can't do this to me. To us. I can't live without you, you know that. Please don't end us this way, love. I love you." He hugged her again, this time tighter than the last time. He patted her hair as she sobbed on his chest.
Breaking away from the hug, he held her face in both his hands.
"We are going to sort this out, okay? I know we can. We are going to find a solution. I can't imagine my life without you. Please, Bree."
Shaking her head, she stepped away from him. She took off the necklace and the promise ring he'd given her on her birthday. Bree let it drop on the floor right before his feet.
"Goodbye Spencer."
He sank to his knees, clutching his chest as it twisted in pain. It was unbearable. His hot tears were washed away with the rain that had managed to make them wet.
They say in life, there are moments you'll always remember. Like the first time he met her at the school's relaxation center. Or the first time they had their first kiss in the rain. And then there was this moment, he would always remember.
As she turned her back to him, he saw his life flash before him. He saw his soul taken away from him and his heart shattering into a million pieces. His pain turned Into anger, her words piercing into his soul. Making sure that she would be able to hear him, he spoke.
"We shouldn't cross paths after this. If we do, you're going to regret it."
Bree shifted uncomfortably on the car's seat, trying to put as much distance as possible between herself and her mother, Nary Marsden, the classically beautiful cold woman sitting next to her in the expensive car that they rode.
She sat down with her back arched and her legs crossed not minding her daughter who was obviously uncomfortable. The black gown and hat that she wore matched perfectly with her personality. There was definitely no wrinkle and to everyone, she looked too young for her age.
Bree was figuratively hugging the door at the moment. Sharing the same space as the extremely cold woman next to her wasn't something that she does frequently. It has been years since she last rode with her mother in the same car. Normally, they would go separately.
The car has been moving for the past hour thirty minutes thirty seconds without stopping. Yes, Bree has been counting. She couldn't help but wonder where on earth they were heading.
"Mo...mother, can we stop for a while, I feel si..sick."
The woman's head snapped to her and the moment their eyes met, Bree's heart skipped a bit. She quickly averted her gaze and looked downward, downcasted. No reply came from Nary and she returned to the position she was in. As Bree sat in the backseat of the car, she felt her heart beating fast. She felt like her mother was up to no good this time.
Finally, the car stopped in front of a building. From the inside of the car, her eyes grew wide when she saw what was written on the signpost. 'Psychiatric Hospital. A home for the mentally unstable patients.'
"Get out," she flinched when she heard her mother's orders as the car's door was opened by the driver for them.
They walked into the hospital together, Nary's heels clicking on the tarred floor. The offensive smell of the hospital caused Bree to be nauseous. Was her Mother finally getting help? Did she realize that she wasn't acting normal like every other mother? Bree's heartbeat increased in excitement at the thought. Finally, she would get help and treat her better.
As they got to the receptionist, the staff members bowed in respect and the woman at the desk handed Bree a paper.
"Here, sign this."
Bree nodded in agreement as the paper was passed to her. She was sure that it was a stand-in paper and nothing serious. Her excitement took over. She signed it without reading and handed it back to the lady.
"Mother, it's a good th...thing that you are deciding to get he..help here. I'm sure after everything, we'll be fine again," still afraid to look into her eyes, she stuttered.
She shivered in fear as Nary walked closer to her, almost peeing her panties when her hands fell on her head only to pat it soothingly.
"No dear. I'm not the one seeking help. I've always been normal but you? You've got a loose nut. You're the one who'll get help from these people. Look at them, they are so eager to receive you. Don't worry, they'll treat you well."
"What?"
Bree's legs shook hearing her mother's words. Her head turned to look at the hospital staff members and was struck by how wicked and unsympathetic they came off. Turning backward, her eyes fell on the patients who were peeking from their rooms and giggling at her. They were horrible-looking. She held her breath to stop herself from throwing up.
"You heard me, child. Be a good girl and get help here. When you're out, I'll take you shopping and buy you goodies, okay?"
"No...no, Mother. I'm fine. I'm normal. I don't need help, I promise you. Pl..Please let's get out of here."
"Mommy says you need help," her voice raised. "You've not been listening to Mommy these past few weeks. You've been talking back at Mommy and I'm sure a nut upstairs fell. They will help you fix the nut, okay? Mommy always tells you that good children listen to their Mother and do as they are told. You want to be good, right?"
Bree's tears streamed down her cheek. Although Nary had informed her that she would be punished soon and although she always picks the cruelest punishment for her, she never imagined that this would be her punishment. This was worse than anything she had ever experienced.
"I did all that you said. I put that tablet in gra...grandfather's drink, I broke his wheelchair, I stole that file from uncle's room, and worst, I...I chased away Helen and Iris because you ordered me to. I'm 20, I should be able to make my own decisions. That's what everyone says.
Nary burst out laughing. The nurses shivered at her laughter.
"That was not because I ordered. It was only right that you do so," Nary replied strongly, her British accent kicking in. She walked around her daughter whispering words in her ears.
"Helen and Iris? They were too pretty for you, honey and you know that. You know deep inside you that Mommy is always right, that's why you chased them away. They were trying to make you rebellious." Bree scrunched her face in disgust as Nary's hands fell on her face again. She patted her all over and looked at her in a way that one would think it was love. Bree had once mistaken that look too. "As for decisions, when you signed that paper a few minutes back, you made a decision. Dear, beautiful people should stay around beautiful people, and the same for unattractive people. Your friends were too pretty for our liking."
Bree nodded. She sobbed remembering how she had believed this statement since she was a little girl and yet again, she believed it. Her head automatically nodded in agreement. It has always been like that. She always ends up caving into her mother's wishes. She can't help it.
She wasn't as beautiful as other girls out there, she was good for nothing, and she was bad luck to everyone who loved her, especially Spencer. Those words keep ringing in her ears every day and night.
But overall, she couldn't bear the thought of staying in a psychiatric hospital so she fell at her mother's feet as she was taught to do and pleaded.
"I...I'll do anything you ask of me, Mother. I'll be good. Please don't leave me here. I'm scared. Mother, please."
"Mommy will come pick you up when your nut is in the right position," saying that, Nary turned her back to her and started making her way toward the exit.
"No...no, Mother," Bree got up to chase after her mother but before she could, she felt four hands hold her in place, restrained her arms behind her, and tied her wrists so that she would be unable to make any further movement.
"Mother, you can't do this. Father and brother would be mad if they found out."
That seemed to work as Nary turned head first before making her way back to her.
"I do not care about the both of them. They left right? I do not give a damn about them." Her tone softened. "I only care about you, my dear. Only you. Because we are so much alike. You are just like me."
"No, I'm not. I'm not a crazy manipu..."
*Pa*
Her words were cut off with a slap from her mother causing her long ginger-colored hair to fall on her face. She quickly clamped her mouth shut as she gritted her teeth in pain from the hit.
This woman had done a whole lot of shit to her in the past but this here was overboard. She barely has a memory of a time when she was ever good to her and not manipulating her entire mind that she had no choice but to believe. She became her pawn when her father left them when she was a little girl of seven after she could no longer manipulate him. Her brother also left six years ago for study leaving just the both of them.
"You can deny it all you can but you are just like me, my dear little angel. Listen to the nurses and fix your nut. This is your punishment. I'll leave her to your care, nurses. When I'm back I expect to see my little submissive cat who would listen to all I say," Nary said to the nurses and turned to walk away from the hospital. Bree's tears were unstoppable watching her very own mother leave her in the lion's den. She could only sob harder.
Before she could register the situation in her head, the nurses grabbed her arms and pushed her fragile self into a room filled with mental health patients and pointed to a bed for her. As they closed the door behind her, she flinched. Her back slid down the wall in fear as she watched the patients both men and women, make their way to her. They looked scarier than anything she had encountered in her life.
They were wild-looking, their eyes made her skin crawl and their fingers were stretched to her. Their nails, oh Lord. Their nails were sharp and unkempt. Their hairs were on a whole different level.
"Do...Don't come any closer," she warned, her voice quivering.
"Pretty girl. She's pretty. Grab her."
Soon, she felt their disgusting touch on her body. Their hands roamed in different parts of her body. Her screams shook the walls of the room trying to fight back but they held her captive whispering into her ears how much she would be fun to play with and how they couldn't wait to have fun with her. She was their new prey. Their dirty hands started pulling on her black dress.
The more she fought back, the more she could feel their hands on her and cuts on her skin.
Suddenly, the door flung open.
"Stop or I'll make you all feel immense pain," a threatening voice came from behind them.
The crazy patients immediately returned to their beds, their bodies shaking in fear. Bree turned to meet with a nurse who was holding a syringe in her hand. "Come with me, quickly," the nurse ordered.
She followed her meekly while still shaking in fear. They walked down a hallway where no one passed after they avoided the other nurses. Bree's hands flew to her mouth as her stomach lurched. She felt a sudden wave of nausea.
"Ba...bathroom?"
The lady stopped. "Your left. Do it quickly."
She followed the way the nurse showed her. As she got to the bathroom sink, she quickly threw up whatever shit it was that she ate in the morning. A thin slice of bread and half a cup of tea. She felt a soothing hand rub on her back giving her the motherly comfort that she has never felt in her entire life. Once she was done and washed her face, the nurse turned her around.
As she stretched her hands to touch her, she stepped backward.
"Stay in place. I have to check something."
The nurse checked her temperature with her palms and then felt her stomach. "I'll help you escape this place but first, I need you to urinate in this." She handed her a cup.
"Wh...why?"
"Just do as I say. What is your name?"
"Bree. That's my name," her beautiful gray eyes stared at the woman in confusion.
"Nice name. I know you're not mentally unstable as your mother said so I'm helping you leave this dangerous place. Just do as I say, Bree. I have to confirm this."
The nurse walked to the other side of the bathroom, to the place where toiletries were kept, and brought out a small sealed sachet which she opened from one of the boxes. Bree almost passed out seeing her bring that out. Of course, she knows what that was. She had her friends talk about it a lot and they had even tried it in her presence once.
"Urinate on the can and put it in. Do it quickly before we get caught. If we get caught, I'm going to lose my job."
With trembling hands, Bree took the kit from the nurse. She peed on the small bowl as she was instructed. She put the kit on it and waited in silence. After what felt like an eternity, she brought out the kit and held it out for the nurse who looked at it in awe.
"Wh...what does it mean?"
"Two lines. You're pregnant, Bree. You're going to have a baby."
