Chapter 1 Third POV

Third POV

"Rhys, what's going on?"

He exhaled deeply. "It's my dad," he said softly. "He's sick."

Elisa's eyes widened. "Sick?"

"He has brain cancer. It's advanced. He's been given a span of three years only to live with strict medical care."

Her jaw dropped, this isn't what she was expecting. She sat quietly at the luxury rooftop of her boyfriend's family mansion. The Helves Pack's Estate. London's night air was cold, but she barely felt it. Not with Rhys beside her.

His arm draped over her shoulders. They were supposed to be chatting and romancing but tonight, this news felt heavy.

He had called her up here after dinner. With such a serious tone, Elisa knew something was wrong but couldn't wait to hear it. Now she was here, he just stared up at the sky, eyes lost in thought. Elisa's heart thumped. She was eager to know. Now that she knew, she was anxious to know what next.

Not being able to say anything, she reached out for his hand.

"The doctors say he wouldn't live longer than that."

"I have to leave. I will have to take over him as the Alpha."

"What do you mean?" She whispered quietly with a disturbed. "To where? Am I coming too?"

All through their childhood years, high school and even through Sports Academy, they have been together, so she couldn't imagine being apart from him even for a day.

"No, you can't but I'll come back for you."

"I will let you know before leaving, the university that has been chosen for me to further my studies. It's still under debate by the Alpha and the pack elders."

He sighed.

"But one thing is I'll be gone for three years."

"Three years." She blinked back tears. "Three?"

"I won't survive living three years without you." Elisa began to cry.

Rhys turned to her quickly. "No. I'd never want to see your tears, baby. I swear. I'll come back. You'll wait for me, right?"

She looked into his eyes, filled with calmness that was falling apart and whispered, "You promise?"

"With everything in me." He cupped her cheeks. "I will never choose anyone aside from you. I promise."

Silence took over them.

On the eve of Rhys' departure, Elisa decided to give him her body. His departing yet promise sex with the hope that this will keep Rhys and her till they return back to each other. It was a steamy and passionate night like never before.

Rhys kissed Elisa like never before, his thrusts were deep and sharp, Elisa moaned so loud, not caring if anyone would hear her. She was eighteen and the next time she would get to be with her boyfriend like this, she would be twenty-one, the age werewolves find their fated mate. Rhys was already twenty-five but hadn't met his mate yet which was a strong reason she believed that his wolf was just waiting till she became of age.

The night was long. She loved it. "How I wished I could make it stay forever like this and we in this blissful moment." She said amidst gnashing of teeth. Rhys leaned forward grinning, whispering a "Yeah," but her earlobe while thrusting deep into her.

With different styles and rounds, he sailed her to the peak of bliss. Elisa dropped to the bed with him. She laid on his body, a soft smile on her lips and getting cuddled to sleep. Tomorrow, she will get to know the university he's admitted to and how their staying apart from each other would be handled.

She had a whole lot to hear.

But when Elisa woke, the bed beside her was empty, the room as well. Her heart nearly jumped to her throat as she sat up quickly.

"Rhys?"

"Rhys."

"Rhys."

Jumping up from the bed, she bent to pick her clothes, the only ones scattered on the floor and rushed out in search of him. She checked the bathroom, rest room, dining, dressing room. No sign of him.

"Rhys-"

"Don't tell me you're gone?" Tears began to form in her eyes, she grabbed her chest.

"Rhys?" She called as she stormed through the hallway.

No answer. His scent was faint.

Gone.

She rushed downstairs to meet his parents and sister to ask. Gloom cascaded over their faces, it was enough to tell her that he was gone.

"Where's Rhys?" she asked breathlessly.

His sister gave a polite but distant smile. "He had to leave early."

Elisa blinked. "What do you mean? He didn't even say goodbye." She fought hard to hold the tears.

"It was for the best. Sudden departure. Security reasons. You understand." The Luna said coldly. The Alpha was silent, staring at Elisa.

"I can't believe this." Elisa snapped, panic creeping in. "Where is he going to then, perhaps I can get there to meet him?"

"I'm sorry, dear. We can't say." She disclosed.

"Please. I won't tell anyone. I just-please tell me where he is going."

"The less you know, the safer it is for him."

These words haunt deep, she felt like an outsider, like she never belonged all these while. "But I was his girl, his promised Luna. He even asked me to wait for him." She was on the verge of tears. "Why can't I just know where he is?"

"He will be in a place you can't go to." The Alpha finally spoke, his tone, cold and sad.

What does he mean? Because my family isn't rich enough to sponsor my travel?

Her heart cracked but she couldn't say anything.

"He'll reach out when the time is right." The Luna added but this didn't sit well with Elisa, she sensed deception. What if Rhys was never going to come back for her?

Elisa didn't believe the Luna, nor Rhys, his promise. Not fully.

Elisa felt so betrayed, thinking both Rhys and his family were playing her and didn't want her to become the next Luna. She tried his number but it said, "Sorry the number you're trying to call is unavailable."

Each call, she received the same repeats. She stood there, the world seemed to exist without Rhys in it. It was a great void. She returned to her family, heartbroken and sunk in despair.

Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months without hearing from the love of her life. Still his family refused to speak to her about his whereabouts but each time, they met her with gloomy faces and a sad tone.

"Something is wrong!" She thought but more of that she's no longer needed in Rhys' life.

Her instinct asked her to give up and move on but her wolf refused to. She wondered if she could stay for three years and meet him again.

Maybe she needed to.

The memory of his sweet touches and soothing voice stayed with her, but the hope of meeting him again began to fade.

It was over three years and Rhys hadn't returned, so she decided to move on with her life, her dream to become an NHL player in America. Part of her that couldn't let go thought she could meet him over there.

Then came the letter.

A full scholarship to the New York University Sports Academy located in Sowfield Pack. A place to learn her dream sports, hockey to expertise. Rhys loved sports, he always wished to be a professional except that his status as the Alpha didn't let him.

"Or is it because of this he ran away?" This came to Elisa. She was skeptical, sighed. But nevertheless, he was her role model.

Though she was set for a new beginning, some remnants of her past will accompany her forever. Better that she was a college graduate already. Being already educated in Academics, hockey coaching was left.

One thing was left. The scholarship interview. With this, she would be flying to NYU. Days passed quickly and the scheduled day for the interview arrived. It was set to be held on Zoom. A captain will be in charge.

Inside of her, she was praying to the moon goddess for a more lenient interviewer, this interview would determine whether her resumption would be sooner or postponed.

When she sat on the camera to see her interviewer, everything stopped. Her world blurred. She grabbed her chest quickly but then she remembered it was a very important interview.

Rhys sat before her. "What the fuck!" She muttered inside of her, eyes popping out. But why did he sit there, eyes emotionless, as if he had never known her from anywhere?

Elisa was confused.

She also got pissed at the very same time, wondering. "Why should we meet when I'm already starting to move on and why didn't you call me?"

At this point, her emotions were conflicting, she didn't know what to do.

"Are you now a sports amateur? Why did you switch to Hockey when you originally studied Visual Arts for your Academic degree?" Her mouth switched from one question to the other but all she got was the serious Rhys staring at her coldly and puzzled from his eyeglasses.

"Can't you remember me?" Her desperate wolf was almost breaking loose.

Silence. Then a heavy breath.

"Have we met before?"

Elisa's heart cut. "If not, please settle down for this interview."

"I don't think I know you."

Elisa went speechless and shattered. Is he for real? She began to wonder next why he wasn't returning to Helves Pack but now a captain. So he ran away to achieve his dreams and left a lie behind for everyone to believe?

Does he want to cut ties with me, his family and the pack forever?

"Why didn't he pick me with him?"

These questions clashed with his first interview question, striking her focus into two directions. Rhys looked so real. She couldn't take her eyes off him. She couldn't wait to meet him.

But his eyes, they spoke something different. Like he never knew her. Elisa wondered if he was pretending or if she had come across the wrong person, his lookalike but how can someone look exactly the Rhys she knew?

"Something is wrong somewhere." She thought inside of her.

And as Elisa sat across from him, blinking back tears, one terrifying thought filled her mind.

Has Rhys actually moved on with another girl?

Chapter 2 Third POV

Third POV

THREE WEEKS LATER

It was her first day in NYU Sports Academy, the best day, also the worst day of her life. She was set to meet with the man who bought her heart and left without saying a goodbye. Alpha Rhys, the young Alpha of her pack, Helves Pack in London who was set to take over from his dad. Now a Hockey captain here.

Elisa Jordan arrived in New York from London two days before, living a street away from NYU. Today the day she was waiting for had arrived, she would get to feel if the man who had interviewed her, acting all cold like he never knew her was Rhys Alexio.

The sports studio was silent. The captain being an NHL player and was experienced served as the lecturer for freshers. For their theoretical classes preceding practice on ice. He was preparing for his first class for the freshmen students who were resuming today.

His fingers moved skillfully over the symbolic ice pitch on the massive table, slightly placed to aid perfect view. The morning class was yet to begin. He was alone, demonstrating his lecture in rehearsals to keep his mind from wandering away.

Then, the door creaked open and students began walking in, talking their places on empty seats, waiting to have their introduction class. They totaled over thirty in number. It was his second year, slightly lesser than last.

He stood up to close the door when he felt everyone had arrived, returning to take his seat on the podium.

Then the door slowly cracked open, a young girl in crazy western fashion. Ripped jeans which exposed her legs and tights while hugging her curves. Her black top stopped just above her waist. Her long, loose hair bounced as she walked.

What the captain hated most.

Two things.

Indecency and lateness. Prohibited for sports men. The dress code had to be smart and athletic.

She didn't look like she cared about the rules, and she didn't care who was watching. It totally skipped her mind to check out who would be her captain, until his deep voice rang across the room, then she jerked up.

"I just guess you wouldn't really want to start up with me on the wrong foot. Look at how you're dressing." She paused abruptly. "Do you think this is a fashion Academy?" Somehow the voice looked familiar, she widened her eyes, raising her head slowly to check out who was talking to her.

She held her breath.

"Oh goddess!" She whispered covering her lips. "Rhys? Rhys!! It's you again?" Her wolf grew more excited this time than last time. The excitement pulled her into advancing towards the captain who shifted backwards in shock.

"Where are you from?" The captain questioned, putting up with a deep frown, he ignored her reaction of shock.

"Don't you know me?"

"Can't you remember me, Rhys?"

"Hello miss, are you high or drunk?" He sprang up. "Do I look like your one-night stand hockey captain or are you trying to hit on me?"

His eyes got redder. "Where are you from? What's your identity? Why are you dressed like this?"

Elisa shivered from his raised voice, her lips were still wide apart. She was beyond shocked at how Rhys was treating her. Colder than she ever expected. It rained into her mind how he left without saying a goodbye, how his family ignored her after he left and how she decided to move on.

She stepped backward, feeling the sudden pangs of betrayal.

A few students chuckled. Rhys didn't. He held on to his serious face.

"Respect is a huge part of this sport," he added. "Indecency has no place, so does lateness. If you don't want to see me as a cold captain, take note of these three things." He warned.

"You'll be marked absent today," he uttered, returning to his seat.

Elisa stood there, dumbfounded, feeling cold hatred. She then shrugged and took out her notebook. "Do what you have to." She muttered.

He turned back to the ice pitch, but he could feel her eyes on him. Watching. Judging. Taunting. His mind went back to the interview, her reaction was the same as today. He sighed, smirking.

All through the class, Elisa spent in thoughts wondering why Rhys would still treat her this way. At some point, she rubbed her eyes, confused if this was a dream or she was seeing him for real.

Later that day, Rhys sat in his office, trying to focus on writing new sports notes he would use to teach his students the next day. But Elisa's image still lingered in his mind, he found himself getting distracted and he couldn't control it. His wolf was restless to talk with her, but then he couldn't. One thing he wanted to avoid the most was an informal relationship between a student and him. As a coach, captain and lecturer, it was forbidden.

He ignored the thoughts and continued with his notes.

He wasn't just a captain. He was something else, a secret he wanted to keep from his students as long as possible. Prior to this, he needed no side distractions.

The next few classes didn't help. Elisa kept showing up, always late, always dressed like she wanted to seduce him. Besides her clothes, she never paid attention to what he taught but him in person, her obsession which had wanted to let go had grown back again, now deeper than before.

Even with the lack of focus, she was a star on the ice. On her debut class. She played smoothly. Carrying the puck like she was born with it. Sleek, fast and without penalties.

He wanted to ignore her but couldn't ignore her talents, one he rarely saw.

Elisa bubbled with excitement seeing how this was pulling Rhys towards her, soon a man who was always acting cold towards her was looking at her most and worst of all, he made her the class representative.

"You must have played hockey before now to be this good?" He asked.

Elisa saw this as a chance to test if he was truly Rhys, particularly as he didn't introduce his name to them.

"My mate used to play it, I used to join him, that's how I got to develop the talent."

But he nodded, thoughtfully, saying nothing.

After a few seconds replied. "Where's that your mate?"

Elisa's lips sealed. She felt a sharp pain in her heart and tears were beginning to form in her eyes. Mumbling and unable to speak fast, he patted her on the back with a nod and moved over to other students, checking their tactics.

Amidst the coldness, there was something with their wolves pulling them towards each other, a deep strong bond which her acclaimed Rhys was trying to deny. Elisa believed they were meant to be even when he didn't want her any longer.

One afternoon, Elisa was walking toward her next class which was already late when she turned a corner too fast and ended up bumping into a rock hard chest, stumbling, then feeling firm hands sliding over her waist.

"Goshhhh!" She muttered in shock before raising her eyes to see who it was.

Rhys.

Her breath ceased. He was staring deep into her eyes with want, focus and desire. Her lips dropped wider. His hand never left her waist. Then he cleared his throat and lifted her up.

"Be more careful next time," he said and walked past.

Elisa remained fixed to the spot, blinking her eyes in shock, struggling to breath. His scent, that of hyacinth and olives stuck to her nose, refusing to leave. It smelled quite different from her Rhys. Where doubt set in. Or did he scent switch. Such practices are done under the blood moon. It's rare but not impossible. Her wolf was rocking inside her, inciting her hormones.

"What's going on?"

It took her almost ten minutes to regain her consciousness, from where she took to her heels, running off to class. She was quite lucky that it was a class handled by another captain. Not Rhys. She wouldn't be able to look him in the face or even play her instruments well.

That night, Elisa tossed in bed, unable to sleep. Her chest felt tight still thinking of what happened in the day, she imagined what Rhys must be thinking about her, how he's feeling. Her wolf disturbed inside her, restless, confused, hungry for someone. All she could think about was him, his hands, his scent, the way his voice made her body react. Everything replayed like it was just happening.

The next morning, Elisa received an email. She peered through her screen.

Captain Rhys. As she saved him.

"Hello, good morning Elisa. As the class representative, help me spread this information to your colleagues. I'm unable to make it to today's class for personal reasons."

Elisa held her breath, feeling many thoughts rushing in.

"You all will be recreating the last topic we had, the studio's door will be opened for practice. My studio assistant with you will be available to make sure everything goes in order."

"Thanks."

"Why?" She thought. "Why is he not coming to class?" And she had already prepared to stare at him all through. She was prepared to have her lofty thoughts.

It rang in her head that it was none other than the event of yesterday. He was pulling away. Elisa didn't know what to feel. She was angry. Confused. Heartbroken. And yet, she wanted him more. She just couldn't let go of him.

Three days passed and with no sight of him even in class, his assistant took them all alongside other captains.

At some point, she wondered if he was sick. She was eager to know and was going to ask when she remembered that he said it's for a personal reason.

Heartbroken, she decided to visit the Sports Academy ice pitch late at night, just to sit and burn out her thoughts. Aside from this, here was the only quiet place she could spend the evening at with no disturbances. The surrounding was a large garden, smelling sweet. With the night light, it gave an ethereal glow.

She wasn't expecting to see anyone at the ice pitch, especially late in the evening as this.

Stepping at the door, her wolf began to giggle. She tried to ignore and walked in, a strong scent hit her. She paused.

"Someone is here?" she whispered to herself. "Captain Rhys?" She stuttered as she saw someone playing, although he was backing her, yet his statues were identical.

She glared deeper, waiting for him to turn. It was him.

"What's he doing around here?"

"He must be so ardent and passionate to be rehearsing by this time." She concurred. She had thought he was sick.

Barely done with her thoughts, her eyes locked up with him the moment he raised his head up.

Elisa gasped. Stumbled.

Captain Rhys. Her Rhys. The man she has been waiting for three good years, upon no return, came in search of him. The man who has been acting all cold.

Chapter 3 Elisa's POV

Elisa's POV

"Are you a Captain? So you left Helves to become an NHL Captain in America?"

"Did you not think of how I'll feel being without you?" Tears had begun to form. "And the pack, wouldn't be taking over from your dad as the Alpha again?"

"Above all, why didn't you tell me the truth? Were you afraid I won't let you go? If so, why didn't you run away with me?"

These questions ran in my mind but I couldn't walk up there to confront him, he was praying, so I waited. The moment he finished and was walking out, towards my direction, I stood up, spreading my arms wide and blocking his path.

He paused.

"What's it, Elisa?" He started with a cool voice. "Are you shocked that I'm your Captain?"

I threw in all the questions I had in my mind, sniffling. Rhys paused, lowered his head in deep thoughts before raising it up back at me.

"Miss, I don't know who you call Rhys or who Rhys was to you. I'm Roman. Captain Roman Jordan, that was the name my adoptive parents found on me upon meeting me."

Slowly my eyes began growing wider.

Jordan?

Same surname with my Rhys.

Adoptive parents? Missing?

A sharp thought rang in my head. Who knows he could have gone missing as a baby. Maybe this is Rhys' brother but does the Alpha family know about him? I looked at his face. Deeply, without flinching. There was no element of lie. I'd thought to check and confirm if he was telling the truth, not Rhys who had picked up a new life and never wanted to accept anything about his past.

My eyes lingered on him even at this. My head was spinning as my brain tried to pull the situation under control.

"You still don't believe me?"

I nodded.

"Would you mind if I asked you to follow me to my quarters? I have a whole lot of documents identifying me as Roman and a citizen of New York here, including my pictures dating back in time."

I jumped at the idea, not minding whether he's a Captain, saying the truth or not. Whatever it takes to find Rhys, I was ready for it. I nodded, following right behind him. It was dark outside and I couldn't see so clearly.

"Upon confirming, I'll love it if you don't bother me again." His tone was harsh and firm. His eyes too. He really meant it. A sharp wave of shock rushed through me but I couldn't decline this opportunity just to keep chasing him. I really wanted to satisfy my curious heart.

I didn't care about what he could do to me at the quarters, my wolf detected no danger though.

While heading to the quarters, I hit my toes violently on a tree stump, stumbled and fell with a groan. I was walking too fast.

Roman as he claimed, but whom I still had him up in my mind as Rhys, until he proved otherwise, paused, turned and ran towards me.

"Are you okay? Are you deeply hurt?" His voice went panicky. Switching on his phone's flashlight, he pointed at my leg. My lips parted in shock. Blood was draining out. I had a terrible bruise over there.

"What the fuck!"

My heart gripped.

My captain swearing because of me?

"Is this how emotional you are in private?" I couldn't believe it. He looked at me, rolling his eyes away without saying anything. When I least expected, he jacked me off the ground, carrying me in his arms like a baby.

My lips couldn't close again. I was gasping for breath. Something I'd never expected, not in my wildest dream.

First, it was him panicking because of me and next, he's carrying me gently like a baby. I thought Captains don't touch ladies?

"I'm carrying you because you're seriously injured because of following me, otherwise I would let you walk by yourself." His cold voice rang in my ear, leaving me wondering as to how he heard what I was thinking in my mind. I swallowed a deep gulp of saliva, trying to suppress my quick breaths.

We arrived at the Academy quarters for lecturers and sporting assistants, a luxury housing unit for those who wished to stay within the campus premises. It was quite far from the main lecture theatres and ice pitch. I could imagine the distance he had to carry me, what went on through my mind and what he could be thinking.

I smiled to myself as he proceeded to open his door, he shifted me, making my ass sit on his hand as he proceeded to open with one hand.

Goshhhh!

I couldn't control my blushing.

He kept his face straight, pretending as though he didn't notice. Upon getting inside, he set me on the couch.

The moment he did, it dawned on me. My wolf's mode slowly shifted. I was in his private space, as a girl. What's going to happen? My breaths got heavier as he proceeded in, all I thought was he's going in to undress and walk out here shirtless to seduce me.

"Elisa, stop the dirty thoughts!"

My good-girl self was trying to be cautious but my wolf was getting rather more chaotic. I sat on the couch waiting for him to come out. When he wore just a black singlet and a pair of shorts, my heart stopped. At the moment, I felt like I'd never known him intimately before and this was the first time I saw him in such a pose. I closed my eyes for a brief moment, puffing out a deep breath that made my lips linger in the air.

"What's that?" He asked, curious before searching his body. "Oh, my outfit." Then folded his lips. "It's my personal space and I just wanted some air, that's why. Not a big deal."

But it's a big deal for me!

While he squatted at my feet, opening the first aid box which he had brought out, my muscles grew stiff. If I don't do this, I will misbehave. Gently, he cleaned my wound, spreading methylated spirit over it and then applied the cotton wool, the plaster.

My attention wasn't on the wound any longer but him. My desire for him at that moment skipped up and I felt like grabbing him and kissing him. When I wanted to control myself, my wolf was getting weirder and out of control.

Goshhhh!

I can't dare to seduce my captain.

I forced myself to accept reality even when not fully. My inquisitive mind proceeded back to my thoughts of him being Rhys, what brought me here which is to know who he is.

"You can sit here while I bring my old pictures, school documents and activities journals to you to convince you that I'm not Rhys, whoever he is." He flared his hands, turning around with a quick frown.

I sensed jealousy.

I nodded. "Okay, I will be waiting." I whispered.

He took over twenty minutes to come out, setting several pictures, books and documents before me. Right from his childhood, I scanned through them one after the other. Pictures don't lie neither do the documents. As a kid and teen, he had honey brown hair meanwhile I'd always grown up with my Rhys, his was black.

A big difference.

My chest tightened, my eyes grew heavier.

This isn't what I was expecting.

Truly, he was raised here in America. He isn't the Rhys I thought of.

I flung my face away, disappointed.

"What are you-"

"I mean-" I pointed at him with widespread eyes, a shock I couldn't explain in words. "Could you be his long lost twin brother or something." I quickly pulled out my phone to show him pictures of Rhys, even his childhood pictures.

Roman stood still, glaring at me in shock, drowned in thoughts. His hands were on his waist. He was left speechless. Neither of us could speak upon realizing this but I was ready to take it further.

"Can I meet your adoptive parents and...."

"And what?" He cut me off before I could even complete my statement. I glared in shock.

"I mean..... to ask some questions?" I stammered.

A smirk. "I don't think that's necessary for now, I wouldn't have the strength for that."

"If so....." Another idea came to mind as I remained still in a shock mood. "Then I should call his parents and tell them what I've seen."

Roman stretched his hand but stopped midair.

"I wanted to ask you not to....."

"Why?" I asked softly.

"I just want to know what happened to Rhys?"

Even at this, my heart hadn't still left him, I was worried and anxious. My heart thumped at this discovery. When I saw him at the zoom interview, I thought it was him and I had a hope of meeting him and rekindling our lost relationship but I was wrong.

"Where are you now, Rhys?" My wolf groaned.

My mind went pale and gloomy. I felt something dark, like something bad had happened to him. Or perhaps I was just overthinking.

"Let me call his parents."

"It's night, I don't think you should." Roman tried to stop me which made me feel as though there was a secret going on... somehow. I snapped out of his grip in anger limping to the balcony of his house and called the Luna, Rhys' mom.

While the phone rang, my heart was held bare, suspense at its peak.

Oh goddess! What will I hear next?
