Chapter 1 Break Up

The ringing of her phone made Alex quickened her steps to where it lay on her bed carelessly. A smile crept into her face when she saw the caller, it was no other than Luke, the love of her life. She was wet from showering and she didn't mind knowing that any other thing can wait but her love can't wait.

She picked up the phone and his voice came through, "being knocking for a while now, can you kindly come open the door for me?"

He said dryly and hung up the call immediately.

Alex pulled the phone from her ear and stared at it. This was unusual for Luke not to say a word of greetings to her. His voice was cold and she feared if he is okay.

"Hope he is okay?"

She thought.

What could have gone wrong? Did something happen at home? Is he fighting with his grandfather again? She was confused.

She quickly dried her body and went in search of her clothes. Any cloth will do, it's obvious he has been waiting and she does not want him to wait any longer.

She was actually getting ready for their dinner date and was so excited but with the way Luke hung the call, she was not sure if the dinner date is possible again, nevertheless she is not supposed to lose faith.

It's Christmas Eve and she is looking forward to that dinner.

Could not see any appropriate dress to put on, she picked her dressing robe and wore it on top of her towel, and left to open the door.

Getting to the door, her heart accelerated and she could not tell why. She needed to calm down before opening the door. Whatever she is feeling is confusing because she does not understand why she has to be so worried.

She breathed in and out, managed a smile, and opened the door.

Her heart skipped a beat when she saw the look on Luke's face. She thought as much, she knew all was not well with him. She hopes it is nothing serious.

" Hi," she said and stepped away from the door for him to come in. He stared at her without returning her greeting before going in. Alex closed the door and turned to face him.

"Let's break up!"

She heard him say and froze. Did she hear him correctly? What's sort of joke is that? She hopes he is playing.

She chuckled and went to him, held his hand, and smiled.

"Thank Goodness you are alright. I thought something has happened to you."

She said, expecting a response from him but he just stared at her.

Luke knew he was going to hurt her badly but his heart is with someone else. He can't continue to lead her on. They have been in this relationship for almost a year now and for a day has she given him a reason to regret loving her but the heart always wants what it wants.

He knows that no matter how hard he tries to fight for this love of theirs, at the end of the day it will fail. So the best thing is for them to go their separate ways and maybe at the end of the day Alex would thank him for doing this today.

He put his two hands to her face and said, "I want us to break up."

"Break up? For real, why?"

Alex questioned him. She wanted to know why he suddenly wants to break up with her. Did something happen that changed his mind? Of Course, something had happened that prompted him to say what he just said.

"I love you and you love me but we won't work. You are a good lady but I would be the biggest joker to try and work this relationship between us."

"So you want to give up on a relationship of eleven months because you think we would not work. Luke, what happened? You promised to take me out for dinner and I was just getting ready for it and here you just showed up to tell me we would not work at all because of mere assumptions, huh?"

Alex could not believe her ears. Why is she damned unlucky?

Luke could see the hurt written clearly in her eyes. On normal days, he would have pulled her to himself and told her that he was joking but he knows that it was no joke, that it is the reality for both of them.

"Alex, a day will come when you will thank me for breaking up with you. You might see me as the worst thing that ever happened to you and I don't mind if you tag me anything but I have come to say goodbye to you"

Luke said and pulled his hands away from her face. She held onto him but he shrugged her hand off. She felt hurt and withdrew. She can't believe that a day like this would come when she has to be hurt by one person she cherishes so much. It hurts to be hurt by love.

"I guess it's goodbye then."

Alex said and turned her back on him

"You have given up and made up your mind so there is no need trying to make you see reasons. Knowing you was the best thing that happened to me and I would not forget that in a hurry, Luke. You are the one who truly loves me but if your heart wants another then I can't fight. Hate me all you love me but I would continue to love you.

When you proposed a dinner date, I was the happiest creature. I thought I was going to celebrate Christmas Eve with the one I love and to celebrate Christmas with him too, I was hundred percent sure. I wish you all the best in life, Luke"

She paused and sniffed, her tears were threatening to fall but she can't cry here so she had to hold herself.

"Merry Christmas, Mr. Luke Bleak."

Chapter 2 Unlucky In Love

Luke felt hurt by the brutality in which she wished him a merry Christmas. He was supposed to be happy that she did not make it difficult for him. She had understood but he had wished she fought a little. Truth is he was not expecting her to accept their break up, guess he wanted her to beg him to stay.

He wished as she disappeared inside and knew for sure that this is the last time he is setting his eyes on her. His wedding is tomorrow and he needs to be at the bachelor party organized by his bachelor friends.

Getting married at last.

He sighed and palmed his face

It's goodbye for the last time.

"Merry Christmas, Miss Coker"

They are now back to formality. How things end before they begin.

He closed her door and stepped into the mood of the evening,

Alex got to her room and slumped on the floor. She doesn't know whether to cry or laugh but she has to do one and that's to cry.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh".

She screamed and screamed. What the heck is wrong with the world? Why today of all days? How her supposed best Christmas Eve turned into her worst Christmas eve. Why did Luke choose to bless her with a breakup?

Was it a crime to love?

Someone needs to answer her, she needs answers to her questions.

Her tears were freely flowing and her heart was breaking apart. What in the name just happened to her? Was she cursed not to love?

So this Christmas again, she would stay like always and spend it like always.

"Life you are not so fair. Did I ever do something to you? Was it my fault that I have to love to a fault? How do you choose to make me so lonely? Why today, why today"

She lamented and wailed on the cold tiles.

Suddenly, life has lost its meaning and love lost all its sparks.

She wiped her tears and stood up and went over to her dressing table. She picked a picture frame of Luke and caressed it. She smiled in bitterness and laughed in her sorrow.

Alex stared at the photo and with every venom in her blood she crashed the photo frame against the wall and the glass shattered, Luke's pics came flying to her, and settled on her feet.

She smiled and picked it up.

"So you decided to take my heart and shatter it, huh Mr. Luke?"

She said and began squeezing the photo, the more she squeezed the photo the more she cried. It was of no use, torturing a mere photo will not ease her pain. She can't just channel her anger at the poor photo.

Alex let off the photo and slumped on the floor without minding that glass was scattered all over. The pain in her heart was greater than any pain she was going to feel and that's why she did not know that a piece of glass went into her pinkie finger and caused her to bleed.

Her brain registered the pain but her body refused to react.

She saw her pink finger bleeding and ignored it.

By now a trace of tears was seen on her face. She has been crying for so long, crying for love that would no longer exist. Her love life is over and it's time to gather herself.

Alex stood up and went into the bathroom.

Her love life being over does not mean her life is over. The best for her was to see the brighter part of it. Like Luke has said, maybe one day she would thank him for breaking up with her.

**********

For the better part of the evening, there was a red-tinted sports car parked by the end of the roadside with the occupant of the car so bored to Earth.

He can't tell what's the fuss about Christmas. What's so special about the damned Christmas?.

He literally would ban Christmas if he has the power.

Humans are so foolish to the extent of overdoing things. Have they not heard that too much of everything is bad, it's time to stop this madness and face reality.

If they are remembering the birth of Christ as they say. It should be once in a while. Christ can't be born over and over again.

He hissed and turned on his radio and damnit, he can't escape it. Christmas is here and it's what it's

He can't deny that the Evening is Cosy and everywhere was hot and the Christmas Carol could be heard from a distant church.

Putting on his radio was a means to distract him but the radio was not far from the celebration as well.

Josh turned off his radio and sighed.

This one week is going to be one hell of an experience for him.

He knows he would not have returned home if not that the old man had summoned him.

He hates Christmas so does everyone from his family but this year's Christmas is different and he can swear his grandfather didn't need to invite him home.

"If only you had allowed me to stay back in the state, I would not be here staring at nothing. You know so well that there is a lot to do but you insisted on having me home. Now that I am home, I hope my presence gives you longevity"

He muttered.

His granddad is not here to hear him and even if he is, he would not care.

"I beg you please, just come and go, don't even spend extra because I am going to kill you. You don't know how sick you make me feel each time I think about you"

He said, referring to no one but it was obvious he was referring to Christmas. He chuckled at himself and shook his head.

Josh Bleak knows he is silly sometimes.

Chapter 3 Miracle Happens

Alex stepped out of her apartment with a red scarf around her neck.

The breeze blew past her face and she stood for a while before moving.

It was Christmas and the winter air was at its peak. It's not a new thing. Winter on Christmas can freeze you to death.

The street was so Christmastic, every corner was decorated with Christmas lights.

And children singing voices were heard. Typical Christmas in Greywave, it's always like this every year.

GreyWave and her people don't joke with Christmas because they believe so much that the Savior of the world was born during that period which is absolutely the truth to the Christian Brethren.

It's a season of love and homing coming for many and it's only a few that does not partake in the celebration because of whatever they believe in.

A lot of weddings happen and so many others, it's in this period that the noble gets to display their nobility.

Those who have cash spend them and the billionaire gangs cruise the community.

Alex figured out that wailing and hoping for a love that is long gone was not her ideal way of spending Christmas Eve. She was supposed to be somewhere in town having dinner with Luke.

If love fails here definitely she would find something which will make her Christmas Eve.

She spoke well to those she encountered on her walk and smiled at whatever caught her fancy.

The walk was refreshing and she was gradually forgetting the event of her break when but not so fast, the scene that played in her front brought back old memories.

This guy was on his knees with people cheering him on as he proposed to his fiancee who happily accepted him. This could have been her accepting Luke's proposal one day.

She has hoped that their relationship would lead somewhere. There was no sense that the relationship could end soon

It's still a shock to her, what a world!

She felt betrayed and cheated, why did Jake take it this long to say goodbye to her when he knew that he was going to say goodbye eventually?

She felt her cheeks hurt and realized she had been crying.

"Ma'am, are you okay"

She jotted back to reality. She saw two pairs of eyes staring at her and those eyes belonged to a teenage boy who was in a red t-shirt and green trousers. It's obvious he is coming from Christmas functions.

Alex wiped her tears and sniffed back the ones that are yet to come out.

"My dear, it's nothing. Was admiring that couple over there. The way the guy proposed to the girl got me all tearing up. It's pure love"

The teenager stared at her and nodded his head. He knows there is more to the tears but decided not to pry into her personal life.

"Alright ma'am, it's just that you have been standing at a place for some time now, and since you are okay. Let me go back to my family.

By the way, I am called Leon"

He stretched his hand and Alex took it.

"I am Alex, thanks for checking on me, and nice meeting you"

Alex found herself saying it with ease unlike a few minutes ago.

"The pleasure is all mine. Let me run along now but before I go, you need to know that wishes come true and miracles happen. Don't stop believing in having the best out of your life"

He said, bowed slightly, and left after he waved goodbye to Alex

Alex stood and stared at him. Do miracles happen? Can her wish come true, she doubts that.

She shook her head and started walking again.

***********

"Hey man, you just arrived?"

Luke's best man to be, asked him as he just drove into the avenue for his bachelor party.

Lucas had been here for over twenty minutes waiting for this dude but he has taken more time than required. He had told them he was going to end it with his ex-girlfriend. Imagine calling someone who is not your ex, ex before she becomes the ex. To Lucas, Luke was heartless.

He has known this Alex girl for a while now and she has got no problem. There is nothing not to love about the girl. It is just that humans would not understand the value of what they have until they lose it.

But what can he do, he is just his friend and nothing more, Luke would never hear a word of advice from anyone. So he can't kill himself.

"Yeah man, I finally ended it with her but I am disappointed at her attitude"

Luke said and stepped down from his Range Rover. He wore this proud look of a man who had achieved something great.

Lucas shook his head and stared at him.

"Congrats then. Your old man called and claimed that he has been calling you but you failed to pick up"

Lucas relies the message that has kept him waiting at the door of the bar.

Why in the world would they host a bachelor party in a bar when Luke has got a large apartment plus his family has space for all kinds of parties? If foolishness was a person it's definitely Luke.

"Yeah I did not want to go through his trouble so I did not pick up beside I was driving."

Luke replied nonchalantly and made it to walk past him but Lucas held him back.

You should have picked up the call, he sounded urgent. He said you should call him back when you are done with your nonsense."

Lucas said and walked into the bar.

Luke stared at Lucas as he made his way into the bar and he wondered why his grandfather had to call and needed him to call back.

Hope this is not one of his troubles because he is not going to have it with him, he definitely hopes so.

He dipped his hands into his pocket to bring out his phone but realized the phone was not there. He might have forgotten it in his car so he turned back and headed towards his car.
