Chapter 1 The Reckoning

The smell of water and forest trees is driving me nuts. But then I felt like I wasn't alone. Before I saw him and his minions, I had walked right into the trap. They were here for my reckoning, but I was not going to be an easy kill.

Before I could say another word, he grabbed me by the throat. While trying to stab me, I pushed him back, twisting his hand. I took the blade from him and buried the silver blade in his stomach, but then I felt the other assassins surrounding me.

I knew what came next; I had played this game before, but this time I was the prey, not the predator, and I knew how the story usually ends for the prey, even if one is as dangerous as I am.

Another tried to grab me. I quickly ripped one of his hands off me and swiftly somersaulted to the far end, another charged at me and then ripped off the head of the next assassin who charged at me, watching his lifeless body fall to the ground. I was surrounded, but I was not going to beg like a rat; instead, I would die like a soldier, taking as many as I can to the after life.

I gave Cain a sinister smile, then grabbed the one that charged at me in the air, pushing him to the ground and broke his jaw, I was about doing some permanent damage when someone kicked me off him, breaking some of my ribs, and I coughed out blood. Instead of being afraid and running from me, they were moving forward to kill me.

I kicked one in the ribs, breaking it. I was about to sink my claws into the heart of the other when I picked up the scent of Cain behind me.

I turned immediately, and then he drove a silver dagger to my heart. I gasped and staggered, almost falling to my knees, but I held myself and drove a dagger into his heart too, the perfect end to a tragic story. He tried to hit me in the right rib so I would drop my weapon, but I had anticipated his movement because he was my handler, the one who taught me everything I know.

But then Kira kicked me, and I hit my head on a branch and fell to the wet forest ground. That bitch had been on my case from day one. My hands were clutching the weapon, trying to pull it out, but then someone pushed my hands off and held the dagger down, pushing it in.

My eyes took in her face; it was Celine, my husband's bestfriend, and the reason I was running in the forest at this time of the night.

"It was me; I tipped them off. I want you to remember that while you die." She whispered, and my eyes widened.

I lay on the wet forest floor alone, life slowly seeping out of my body, reminiscing about the feelings I had the very first day I met Agnar-the way my voice fluttered, the way he mated with me for the first time, the butterflies when he marked me.

This is it. I would finally rest in peace. Maybe I would find the peace I desire in the underworld if my sins didn't come knocking.

I drew my final breath, and I shut my eyes, as I had grown tired of holding on.

I was happy that it was quiet now,

I should take you to the very beginning of my story.

My name is Katya Paw. I am an orphan girl who was raised to become a wolf assassin. I had only known this life for a short time. I never met my parents, but Cain said they were killed by the Alpha of their pack.

Cain and the fifteen other trained assassins were the only family I had. Well, I wouldn't say we are a family, though. We were united by our zeal to live and make money. And while we progressed, Cain recruited more children from orphanages, making our organization a global organized crime thing, operating in the shadows.

We were trained to be independent and not ask questions, to live for months on a mission faking to be who were not just for the money and promotion in the organization, and I was high up their pyramid, one of the best assassins.

I was sent by Cain to kill Alpha Agnar Ridge. The Alpha of the Crystal Lake pack. It felt like every other job I had done before. They give you a name, and you make them disappear forever, and no pity story had ever made me not complete my mission. So I took the file from him and went to prepare for the mission.

I spent days preparing for this, gathering every bit of information I could about the pack and my target, of course.

When I was ready, I sneaked into the Crystal Lake pack at night to get the job done, but the minute I stepped foot in the pack house, the beautiful smell of sandalwood and forest trees hit me, making it hard to control my wolf, which had never happened before.

The closer I was to his room, the more dominant the scent became. I had thought I was sentenced to a life of solitude due to my crimes as an assassin by the moon goddess, but here I was standing face to face with this Adonis, who just called me his mate.

It took everything in me to forget about the mission and the life I have lived for so long to submit to him because I wanted the life I had seen mates live when I visited packs.

Agnar promised to give me the whole world. I thought I had found the family I never had. Did he forget his promise, or was I delusional all along?

If only I knew, I would have killed him and moved. on with my life.

Agnar gave me the life I wanted and more, till Celine, his best friend, came back from her mate's pack as a widow. He withdrew from me and preferred her company. I thought it was nothing till I caught them in bed.

"Fuck me, yeah!" the groaning continued. The closer I got, the louder the groaning became.

"Tell me that I am sweeter than your Luna," Celine commanded the minute she saw me. While grinning so wickedly.

"You are sweeter than my mate," he groaned, plunging hard into her.

I felt tears trickle down my cheeks, and I was gasping for air. I turned to leave and stumbled on a piece of furniture in the corner.

"Kay!" he screamed and jumped down from the bed. I quickly made to dash out of the room, and he gripped my hands.

"Let go of me!" I screamed as his hands on my skin repulsed me. I could hear my stomach churn in disgust.

"It's not what you think, Kay!"

"Let go or I will scream," I warned him. He paid no attention to my words and continued begging.

"He... " I tried screaming, but a slap cut me off. I landed on the floor with my bum, watching him in disbelief.

"Shut your mouth; I can't have you shame me because I took pleasure from her after a hard day at work," he growled out.

"Fuck you, don't touch me again," I said, and I grabbed his leg in a high grip, trying to break his leg, but then he poured something on me, and it burned me.

"How dare you pour Wolfsbane on me?" I screamed, then threw a lamp at him, and he hit me on the head with a stick.

My vision blurred, but I had witnessed pain more severe than this, so I obstructed his next blow with my hand.

"Stop, Agnar, you will kill her," Celine screamed, covering her body with the sheets. I could swear I saw her smile, so I knew then, that I had to leave.

I quickly got up and dashed out of the room before he could catch me, running as far away from him as possible. I never thought a day like this would ever come. I never thought I would be betrayed by my mate.

I felt my heart breaking in two and my eyes brimming with tears.

What made me think this charade would end happily ever after, even for a wolf assassin? I guess this is the moon goddess's way of paying back for my heinous crimes.

* * * * *

But then I heard a beeping sound, the one that indicated that someone was coming into your room at the organization.

"Kat, I have the files on your next target, It's Alpha Agnar Ridge. Open the door. I don't have all day," I heard someone say and knock on the door.

I opened my eyes and looked around, and I was truly in my room in our headquarters, not dying in the forest of Crystal Lake pack.

"Kat, open the door; I know you are in there." The voice, which I recognized to be Cain's, said it again.

"Five minutes, Cain, Let me dress up; I am stark naked," I said, then pulled my bed up, and like I expected, my phone was there.

I checked the day, and as expected, the date was a year ago, the day that Cain came with the files he got on Agnar and asked me to find the rest out.

"Kat, I don't care if you are naked or not; open the damn door; I have already seen you naked many times," he said.

I kept my phone back, checking my face in the mirror so I wouldn't betray anything. I opened the door.

"You look flustered," he said, pushing me so he could enter.

"You startled me. When do we ever sleep with two eyes closed with the nature of our job?"

He smiled and said, "True, this is the file they sent on that Alpha."

I took it from him and was going through it when he pulled out a silver blade.

"Why is there blood on your hands?"

Chapter 2 Mate

"Kay!"

"What?"

"Your hands?" he said, pointing at my hands. I took a glance when he quickly walked past me.

"What are you doing?" I asked Cain, who was busy searching the whole room with his silver blade in his hands, ready as always to plunge it into anyone. He must have thought that there was an intruder in my room. No one dares come close to the base unless they have a death sentence.

"Is someone here? Do they have a gun?" He whispered.

"There is no one here." I tried reassuring him.

"Then why are your hands stained with blood?" he asked, pointing at my bloody hands.

"Um, this, I... I forgot to wash up when I got in yesterday night."

"You forgot?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Don't judge; I was too tired, ok?"

Cain is one of the wolves who is very distrustful and checks every piece of information being passed to him. I had to make sure he believed me, as I didn't want to give him anything to bite on and start researching. We nicknamed him the Hellhound because he never lets go once he bites.

"Ugh, what's that smell?" He said while blocking his nose with two fingers and placing the blade back.

"What smell?" I asked, confused while trying to pick up the scent.

"Get to work, would you? Wash up while at it; you stink," he blurted out, and he shut the door immediately.

I sighed in relief, then turned my gaze to my hands.

"Don't freak out!" I whispered to myself, staring at my bloody hands. I was speechless but still in disbelief. I would have thought it was just a bad dream, but then the blood, the date-it's real as fuck.

I rushed to the mirror and quickly pulled off my top to bare my chest, and it was as good as new.

"No stab wounds," I murmured while inspecting my body.

I picked up the file Cain gave me on Alpha Agnar, and it was exactly the file they gave me a year ago.

I sat down for some minutes in utter disbelief, wondering how things moved from being dead on the wet floor in the woods to getting here. Somehow I got transported to the year before, and I did not understand who saved me, but the only person who could save a dead wolf was the moon goddess, so I wondered what she was up to.

I'm supposed to get a good grip on the whole situation, but honestly, I'm losing my mind.

"Time to do some digging," I whispered to myself. Since I am here, I might as well find out why Celine was there in the forest and visit a seer while also trailing Agnar. Since I know everything about him, maybe I could find a way to kill him before the day that I find a way to break into his pack.

I quickly went into the shower to scrub myself clean; I couldn't attract attention. When you live among assassins, you just need to be extra careful.

Immediately after I was done bathing, I put on a black trouser and a black top; it's the only clothes you get to wear once you are at the headquarters. I guess it's a reminder for us to be invincible at all times.

The minute I was done, I grabbed the file, and it was just the basic stuff about him-nothing worth reading-but I knew all the other stuff. There was no reason to dwell on that.

I picked up my key card and headed towards the Library. I have a lot of work to do and so little time.

"Kat," Maria, the front desk lady at the Library, called out the minute she saw me.

"Maria, It's nice to see you."

"You too, you have not been to the library these past few days after your mission. Did you kill a child in this mission or what?"

I had spent that week in India stealing a costly diamond necklace from a billionaire and the week before it in Russia stealing nuclear weapons. So there was no way I would kill a child in these places, but I just smiled.

"I thought it would be good to have a change of scenery after all the hard work," I replied, smiling.

"Exactly my thoughts; you know, I told Johnny the same thing yesterday; I mean, it's boring having sex all the time on the bed."

"I agree with you; go do you," I chipped in while I plunged the key card into the door, and it pulled open.

She is an oversharer, and she is one of the many reasons I decided to stay away from the library for a few days because I did not want to add more stress to myself when I had a mission.

Thankfully, the library was rowdy when I got in; no one would even notice I got in, but then they had cameras everywhere. I casually moved toward the third row and noticed a blind spot at the far end of the row. I used my hand to look for the book on the shelf and went to sit down. It was a book on reincarnation and rebirth. It is said that reincarnation with wolves happens when a wolf's soul is placed by the moon goddess into another body because the person has not yet completed the work they were born for, and leaving them to die will change the course of things. I moved past that page since I was still in my body, but I did find a place that said, in rare cases, the person's body is raised with the soul.

My watch beeped, which meant that I had a few more minutes before going to Agnar's business deal. I had skipped it the first time I got the mission because I wanted to play it safe, but this time I am leaving no stone unturned.

I studied the room and was glad when I saw a girl wearing a black cloak and taking a book from the shelf. I moved towards the blind spot the minute I spotted one of the girls wearing a black cloak checking out books in the third row.

I pushed one of the shelves on the floor and acted flustered, and then the girl gasped, thinking that she had done it. She cursed and hurriedly put off her clock to pack the books.

"Are you going to help me?" She asked me, but I ignored her.

"You all have attitude problems." She murmured and started packing the book, but I heard it.

She was new because no old would dare talk to me like that, but she was lucky that I was busy, or I would have knocked all her teeth out.

I grabbed her cloak and the three books that I was looking for. It was the book on the organization's history that I never paid attention to.

I didn't look up as I was avoiding getting picked up by the camera. I skimmed through the stack of books and documents, but there was nothing important there about the organization, just some random documents about the achievements of the organization. You know the kind of stuff you keep lying around when you want to brainwash a bunch of kids.

But something hit me: in all the documents I went through, it only mentioned Cain as the handler, not the founder.

We have 3 handlers, and each of us is assigned to one of them. We had always assumed that Cain was the founder and also a handler, since the other handlers answer to him, and you know, no one gets to ask questions about him.

"This is confusing," I whispered to myself.

I took a picture of one of those documents and quickly went back into my room, more confused than ever.

I changed my dress into a yellow plain body con dress that accentuated my curves, I pulled my hair into big curls to cover my eyepiece, and I put on lipgloss. I planned on making sure that I got something today, but I also did not want to draw too much attention to myself. I sprayed my cloaking perfume, applying it more times than I did before heading out. You can never be too careful.

They were meeting in a coffee shop that he owned; it was not in the city and was not that popular, but I had picked up that information days later by seducing one of Agnar's men in the morning before the mission. He did not know the names of the men they met that day but told me that everyone referred to him as My Prince.

I arrived before them, ordered two coffees and six doughnuts, and placed a recorder on the wall. It was transparent and hard to pick up.

I went outside, then brought out my iPad and started pretending to be working on flyers. I did not want to be seen as someone who was doing nothing. I noticed when a black car stopped in front of the shop and men dressed in military uniforms with guns came down. No one talked, maybe because they were dressed as the military or maybe they were used to seeing them.

"Go outside!" one of them screamed, and a few people inside came outside without a word of protest, and that was odd. They looked at us one by one, touching whomever they wanted, and then one stopped in front of me.

"I never saw you in this coffee shop before," he said rudely, but I only smiled and jutted my boobs out.

"True, because I would remember a man like you, but thank God that I came to this coffee shop today," I said, smiling coyly.

He mindlinked something to his men, and they started laughing.

He grabbed my throat and said, "You like it kinky, right? I thought he would just ask for my number if showed him some boobs but he grab my throat. My hand was itching to punch him, but then someone whispered Boss, and he removed his hand immediately.

"Later," he whispered and jogged off.

My gaze turned to that bastard stepping out of the car-the one and only Agnar Ridge, my mate.

My wolf started to wiggle from the smell of sandalwood, but this time I held her in check.

The bastard stopped, then grabbed that man who was holding me by the neck.

"Stop looking at women and stay alert; I may die today, you fool. A visit from him was hardly a good thing."

He nodded, already turning red, and then Agnar released him.

"He is coming," someone said, and I saw Agnar swallow hard.

I heard the sound of a jet, and then it landed in the field beside the coffee shop.

Four men stepped out of it. They were all tall, and for some reason, my wolf was jumping up from the spicy cologne I was perceiving. I wondered what could be the problem, as I already found my mate, but when he got closer, my wolf started pushing me to stand up.

Agnar rushed to him and pulled out his hand, with his head bowed low. "Good afternoon, My Lycan Prince."

"A lycan," I gasped in surprise. I have never seen one since I was born; they loved to live in their palace. Away from the chaos of werewolves, and packs.

He ignored him, and then someone behind him said, "Just my prince is fine."

Agnar put his hand back with a smile that did not reach his eyes and murmured, "Of course."

"Mate, go to mate!" My wolf screamed, trying to force me.

I whimpered, and then his eyes turned to me. He moved like lightning and was in front of me.

Chapter 3 Return To Where It Began

I always thought I was fast, but the Lycans are in another league altogether. I stood up while staring at his surprise. My wolf kept pushing me to acknowledge my mate.

He was tall and domineering with his dreamy gray eyes staring right into my soul. I had no idea what this could mean, Agnar is my mate but why I feel the same attraction towards this lycan beats me.

I could tell he could feel the attraction but thank goddess I cloaked my scent, this could have been a disaster.

"How dare you stare the prince in the eyes, pay your respect!" The man from behind him yelled at me, I quickly shot him lasers from my eyes and my palm curled up into a fist, ready to charge at him.

"You dare disrespect the prince" he barked at me, his hands immediately turned to claws within a split second and aimed at my heart, my fist tightened as I was ready to defend myself, but a pair of firm hands interrupted the fight.

He gripped his man's hand tightly. "Stand down!" the Lycan prince barked at him.

"Let's not cause a scene," he sniffed at me, his cologne was driving me mad and my wolf uncontrollable, "You shouldn't waste your time fighting, this boneless, fragile banshee, we don't want to break her now do we" they laughed in jest of me.

My stomach churned in disgust, I guess they enjoy laughing at defenseless ladies, I would have taught them one or two lessons to show them how fragile I was, but I advised myself not to.

"Prick," I cursed internally.

"My Prince" Agnar made to call his attention but he dismissed him with a wave. He gave me a condescending smirk before turning to enter the coffee shop.

Agnar was busy giving orders to one of his men.

"Alpha Agnar, don't keep the prince waiting," the guy that corrected him earlier said.

"Douchebag, not that he doesn't deserve it anyway" I cursed underneath my breath, as I fought hard to remain in control.

Two men followed them into the coffee shop, while the other two stood guard outside the shop. I quietly sat right back and pretended I was scratching my head. I adjusted the earpiece that almost fell out because of the whole drama earlier.

"Agnar, reports have reached the palace of your deplorable massacre of the Blood Moon Pack."

"My prince, I can explain..... "

"Silence Agnar, I didn't come all this way to listen to your gibberish, the packs should be united against our common enemy which is the rogue packs, and not killing each other." he barked at him.

"If the royal house receives this kind of report regarding you, we will not relent to order your execution." He said with a tone of finality.

"Yes, my prince" he answered scared, well I would be if I were in his shoes, the Lycan prince just threatened to kill him. After a little while of going on and on about other stuff the meeting came to an end.

I walked home more confused than I was when I left earlier. I had no idea why I would feel the same way for two men; why would I be mated to both men? What kind of sick game is the moon goddess playing with me? Well, whatever it is, I will find out tonight.

* * * * * * *

I was checking myself out in the mirror, wearing an all-black leather outfit, with my weapons carefully stacked away and my burgundy hair packed in a high pony.

I grabbed the cloaking perfume and sprayed it so generously.

I quickly got on my black power bike, courtesy of the organization, they provide you everything you need to aid your mission, they call it perks for being part of the organization.

I sped off to the Crystal Lake Pack, knowing what awaited me; only this time I was prepared for anything.

I stopped the bike a few miles away from the pack and got off, I traveled the rest of the way on foot, and I sneaked into the the pack without alarming anyone.

I quickly made my way to the pack house. I knew Crystal Lake Pack like the back of my palm, their security, their alarm system, you name it.

In a matter of seconds, I was in the hallway leading to Agnar's room. I sneaked into his room to see Alpha Agnar standing at the center of the room as if he had been waiting for me all this while.

The smell of sandalwood and forest trees hit me then my wolf became uncontrollable again.

"That cursed scent"

"Mate!" he growled, his golden yellow eyes, sparkling in the night and his ravaging look, pooling wetness in my core, the mating bond pulling at me to succumb but I only have one mission at hand.

I felt his wolf fighting to gain control, and I felt his excitement and desire to make me his through the mating bond if only he knew what I had in store for him.

He slowly walked towards me and stopped a few feet away from me. He slowly slid his arms around me, pressing me against his body and covering the gap between us.

It was now or never. In a split second, I had his face glued to me, holding it steady. I needed all the concentration I could channel to get into his head. I shut my eyes the instant I locked into his mind. the images of His head were coming to me slowly, but they were not clear.

I let out a sigh to calm my nerves, I tried digging deeper, as I was slowly losing the link I had established earlier.

"What are you doing?" his deep voice filled the room, I quickly opened my eyes to see him staring back at me. He was supposed to be in a trance and not in control of his senses.

"Impossible", I whispered and let go of his face wondering what had just happened.

no one has ever withstood my powers, I have read the minds of many wolves, Alpha's inclusive, with a single touch and a couple of 45 minutes of concentration and all that is inside your head would be mine to read.

What was so special about him, that even my cloaking spell didn't work around him and so did my telepathic powers. It didn't make sense at all, because it worked this afternoon, he didn't recognize me as his mate earlier,

I had no time to at all, and it was messing up with my plans. I can't kill him without taking a peek at his brain, and he wouldn't let me go now that he has recognized me.

As frustrating as it sounds, I have to stick around for a while and get all the information I need before deciding what to do with him, but first I have to stop him from marking me.

"Are you okay?" he asked, looking at me awkwardly. But I was brainstorming on what to do to avoid being marked by this bastard. I was deliberating between knocking him out or cutting myself, but cutting myself would be useless since I was going to heal almost immediately.

He cupped my cheeks, both hands staring into my eyes in a concerted manner. I could feel my heart racing, and immediately I passed out.

* * * *

When I woke up the next morning, I was lying down in his bed; it used to be our room until he desecrated it. I felt like puking my guts out when I remembered him fucking Celine on this same bed.

"Bastard!" I cursed out loudly. I wasn't bothered by Agnar because I knew he wasn't here when I woke up the next morning.

I should have read the handwriting on the wall. What kind of fool leaves the bed at first light after marking the mate the previous night?

"Whore!" I cursed yet again.

I stretched my body, as I was feeling refreshed, kind of glad I came up with the passing out drama, it paid off after all. I had faked the fainting yesterday to avoid the marking, but the minute my head hit the pillow I dozed off, I guess my days of sleeplessness had caught with me.

I have a lot to do today and so little time but first I have to call Cain to clear things up with him,

I picked up my phone that was on the desk and dialed his number; he picked up on the first ring, hoping for some news.

"Is it done?" he asked in his stoic manner.

"There is a little problem, but I will handle it as soon as possible" I quickly replied, he was silent for some seconds,

This is it, he is going to cancel the mission altogether and call me back to base. He always does that when a mission goes south.

"Get it done as soon as possible" his cold deep voice came again. My face lit up in a smile, which disappeared as quickly as it appeared.

"Yes..." the line went dead cutting me off,

Cain has not for once failed to pull out his girl once things go south; if he isn't doing that now, then I should be worried.

"What are his ties with this Celine and this pack?" I asked myself.

Well, I don't care if he hangs up on me a million times; as long as he lets me stick around to find the truth, I am good.

I dropped the phone and began leaping for joy.

"You are quite energetic for someone who passed out yesterday."

Damn, I still have to deal with the marking problem.
