Chapter one.
It is going to be okay.
Emily, laid down on the bed feeling reluctant about her interview which was scheduled to be held by 10:00 am. It's her 2nd year after graduation. Life hasn't been rosy like she imagined, the plan was to go to school and get a degree, get a good job, and obviously fall in love with her charming prince.
Emily was lost in deep thoughts when Rosie stepped in, her hands covered with flour she had been busy with baking. She had a big client and had to bake for the upcoming wedding of a newly wedded bride.
Rosie patted Emily on her shoulder gently to bring her back from consciousness. "you are overthinking it" Rosie chipped in seeing Emily's worrisome face.
"You are fit for this position not just because you are my friend but I have seen how hard you have worked"
"You know how hard it has been for me for the past few weeks, I am beginning to lose it, I hope I get the job this time" Emily murmured checking the time once more.
" You don't have to give up. Emily at least not now" Rosie replied. "You have to show up as your best self, and throw away those negative thought that are of no use to you"
"Come and have a taste of my delicious snacks". Rosie said, dragging Emily from her room to the kitchen.
" How is it?". She asked after Emily tasted just a bit of it. " You make the best pastries in New York Rosie and I am such a huge fan and so proud of you"
" Thank you," Rosie answered, grinning from ear to ear like she just won a lottery ticket. This is for the wedding of the year, the youngest couple in town" Rosie chipped in, and patted her back.
" And about that, when are we attending your wedding, you are not getting younger" Emily chuckled as she teased Rosie.
" I am just 26, get a grip of yourself young lady". Rosie yelled out.
"When my Mr. Right comes, I will say I do and walk down the aisle with him," she said assuredly.
"and I will gladly follow you as your maid of honour". They both did a few demonstrations with both of them falling down while laughing hard.
Rosie dragged Emily up to her feet "Absolutely, now hurry up and get yourself prepared for your interview, you can't be late, first impression matters a lot" .
"I sincerely have a positive feeling about this job interview you are about to attend. This is going to be your last job search".
" Thank you Rosie," Emily said feeling a bit emotional and using her handkerchief to wipe the tears that had started flowing freely down her face.
" I honestly wish so, you know how easily I get discourage when things don't go as I planned". Emilly sighed deeply.
Emily left the kitchen, and walked down to her room to get prepared for the day. She picked up her tooth brush and started to quickly brush her teeth. When she was done she looked into the full length mirror that was hung at the corner of the bathroom. Satisfied with her looks, she walked over to take a shower.
After washing her body she proceeded to get dressed. She wore a red body-fitted dress that highlighted a few of her curves, putting on a low-heeled stiletto to complement the look and had a black Gucci bag on. Her gown reached her knees, not revealing too much skin on her thighs. She walked down to the mirror to check out her dress, and smiled with genuine admiration. She packed her hair into a bun, laid the baby curls that fell from the hair. She did that perfectly.
Having graduated as one of the best students in her department. Emily had expected to get a job immediately. Several firms had turned her down due to various reasons making her feeling disappointed. She had managed to pull through with the support of Rosie. She gently picked up the brown envelope which contained her CV as it was laying down helplessly in the wooden table right at the middle of the room.
" We go again, wish me luck," she said feeling nervous as she flashed back to those numerous failed interviews she had been to and remembering how disappointed she was when she got rejected.
" You are getting the job this time, Emily brace yourself up"
"Okay," Emily replied with little or no belief at all.
Rosie has been her only family after losing her parents in a car accident. A tear slipped down her face, she wiped it and another dropped as she reminisced about everything they have been through together over the years.
" I wished they were here, to see what I have become or at least how well I am trying to get myself a better life" she breathed deeply.
"I know, they will be so proud of you wherever they are," Rosie said as she patted her back gently to calm her down.
"Stop being a pity party, you have an interview, hurry up and get dressed or you will be late" Rosie spoke assertively.
"We need money to pay for our rent, which is in three months time, this job will go a long way in helping me to assist you in paying of the bills as well" she said to Rosie who seem to be busy with the pastries she was making as she was trying to put a finish touches to the cup cakes.
"I have always been a burden to you these past few weeks of staying here and I want to be able to assist" " If only I had gotten the job at the bank I would have been able to help you more".
"Don't let those past disappointment make you lose your faith, I wish you all the good luck in the world and I will never see you staying with me as a burden" " For goodness sake I love having you here till you got everything figured out for yourself, you are more than welcome to stay with me" " I have seen how hard you have been trying and I can only be more than welcome to assist you the little I can anytime and any day"
'Thank you, Rosie, Emily said as she wiped the tears from her face"
" Hurry up and have a great day Emily, and good luck on your interview once again"
Rosie watched for a while as she waited for Emily to go and waving goodbye she turned to continue her activities of baking one of the best wedding cakes of the year".
Chapter two
The Interview.
Emily checked her phone as the taxi, which has been booked by Rosie, to take her to the venue of the interview has not yet arrived.
She glanced at her wrist watch"It's 9:45 am, and she barely had 15 minutes or she was going to be late.
Her ride finally arrived. A sense of relief flowed through her as the car stopped in front of her, beeping out loud.
" Oh, my goodness. What took you so long" She yelled at the driver, obviously getting impatient.
" It's took me a while to locate here, ma. I am so sorry for the delay"
" Hurry up, I have an interview today, and I can't be late seeing you have succeeded in taking a bit of my time".
He drove away rathar fast, seeing how anxious she was that in not less than 10 minutes, he dropped Emily at the industrial estate where Glams Enterprises was situated.
Emily had anxiety written all over her face as she walked into the main building. She used the elevator to hurry the process. She clutched tightly to her bag, breathing deeply as she tried to organise herself. She wasn't looking when she accidently bumped into a tall, fair, well-built, and handsome man.
"I am so sorry, I wasn't looking at all" Emily gasped in exasperation.
He looked at her sternly and pushed her slightly away from him. "You better watch where you are going next time, clumsy little one" He said coldly.
Emily ignored him. He is not a gentleman, and how can he be when he obviously looks this good and definitely will have a lot of girls dying to be with him.
Emily tried to get him off her mind. She had a big day, and she shouldn't be here worrying about a man she had just met at the elevator a while ago.
She hoped her boss wouldn't be mean as some wealthy and successful people obviously are.
Coming down from the elevator, she walked down to the table and approached the front desk. A lady was sitting down busy operating her system.
"I am here to meet the C.E.O of Glams for my scheduled interview" Emily spoke to the secretary. She raised her head as soon as she heard the voice.
" It is your first day of work, and you come late. What's wrong with you? The boss doesn't condone lateness" she said
" I know, I am sorry, I had a little bit of delay this morning"
" Whatever, you can go in now. The boss has been waiting for you in his office"
" He wants to see you right now"
A little relief as she walked in to meet with her new boss. She gasped in shock seeing the man who called her clumsy little girl just now at the elevator sitting down and facing her.
"You are the girl from the elevator this morning"
"Yes,um it is me"
"I didn't realise that you are...." She stammered.
"That I will be your new boss, small world, you know right, you are going to be my new personal assistant manager"
"How experienced are you"
She braced up as she recalled how much she wanted this job.
" It is your first day, and I must say I am not impressed at all".
"I did all the interviews, and I was your best choice, I need you to just give me a chance" she pleaded.
"Don't stress it,I can see worry all over your face, just don't make the mistake of coming in late again".
"Okay sir, It won't happen again".
" Drop the sir, Liam is fine"
"Alright sir, what do I do now"
......
................
Coming back to meet an empty house. Rosie had finished baking and had gone out to supply the cake to her client. Emily slumped down on the couch, extremely tired after the long day at the office. A few minutes later, Rosie walked in.
" How did it go?" Rosie asked dead seriously to hear about every detail of the interview.
" You have no idea, you won't believe Rosie, this is the most awkward interview of my life".
" I ran into my new boss at the elevator, and we had the most awkward moment of the year".
" You won't believe that he called me a clumsy little girl, asked me to drop off the sir and call him Liam". She sighed.
" How on earth am I supposed to call my boss by his name".
Rosie listened attentively" I am a bit confused here. What is the issue? You certainly got the job didn't you". ' If I were in your shoes, I would have wanted to disappear as well, but let's look at the positive side of this whole incident. You got what you have always wanted, a nice job, an attractive salary"
" You shouldn't have to bother anymore about your job hunt". She said,
"Another thing, is he cute".she asked curiously.
"Oh, God Rosie plss, don't even go there, he doesn't look like the kind of guy that has time for a woman and he is too serious and I don't know, maybe every guy that is kind of hard-core has a soft spot".
" Well, that sounds nice. It looks like you got yourself a real soap opera now".
" Yeah, well, I hope it doesn't take any dramatic twists. The only twists I need is the one that will make my life easier".
" I know, right, and I am so happy about it".
They both hugged each other tightly.
" You see, I told you so, I knew you were going to kick this one successfully"
" Congratulations, Emily, as the new personal manager to Glams enterprises".
" You welcome".
Chapter 3
Working with Liam
The sun was high and bright when she woke up. She felt the surge of freedom herself. It was her sixth month of working as a personal assistant in glams enterprises.
"It still feels like a dream, I get to work with one of the youngest C.E.O in town"Although it require much from her, Emily was determined. She dropped her laptop, ear phone, and wifi away, trying to push work out of her mind so much.
Emily sighed " If not for the pay and my love for being a career lady and the need to never have to be dependent on a man for everything. I would have resigned from my job". She spoke to Rosie, who was laying like a log of wood on the couch.
"You are kidding, right? I know how much you love to work apart from the fact that it pays your billls".
"You got me right there, but I wouldn't mind a prince charming at the moment who will make me forget that I have responsibility".
" You will find your prince charming very soon, but for now, you have to elimate all forms of distraction and focus on building your life". Rosie said, pointing at the piles of files lying down on her table despite it being the weekend. She sighed, seeing the tons of sales analysis and marketing to carry out. Emily doesn't need anyone to remind her of her responsibility as she picked them up and began to work on them.
The next day was Monday, and Emily resumed work early that morning. She went over to his desk to drop his usual coffee and had completed all the tasks assigned to her. She didn't want to disappoint her boss. As she was willing to show him how dedicated she could be when it comes to work.
" Good morning Sir,".
He looked at her sternly and continued working on his computer, surprised that she was done with the work so soon. His other assistant would have come in with 1000 excuses why she was not able to do it. He was impressed but chose to hide it.
" You can drop the file, and I hope you did an excellent job".
How will she know except he examines it? He was a perfectionist, and she wasn't anywhere close to working with him.
" I did my best, sir. I have been up all night". She wondered why he kept staring at her.
" What have I been paying you for, I don't think you should be complaining, this company pays their workers adequately for the work they delivered" He said coldly. "The only thing I expect is for you to perform your job diligently"
"Okay, sir".
"How many times have I told you not to call me Sir, but Liam".
" I don't think it is professional to call you by your first name sir".
She looked at him. Why is he being so paranoid? I only told him so he could resonate with me that I have the company's best interest at heart. He was the opposite of everything she prayed for.
"And while you are at it, get all the documents needed for my presentation today for the company's annual meeting"
" Yes sir". She replied, collecting the files he handed down to her .
" Now, get to work and finish the report before 3am".He said firmly.
"Okay, sir" She hurried off to her office.
As much as Emily loved working with Glams company, her boss Liam is beginning to be a thorn in the flesh. He hardly sees her effort nor acknowledges it. Emily sighed deeply and tried to pay attention to her assigned duty.
"I hope this job is not the end of me" Emily screamed to the wall, wishing they could hear her and answer back.
Having gone through the material, Emily heads to his office to deliver them. She knocked, and there wasn't any response. He should be in one of his meetings, but he has ordered the report to be dropped on his desk before 3 am. She checked her watch and it was 2:49am.
"Thank goodness," she exclaimed".
She proceeded to do as she was instructed. But unknown to Emily, Liam walked in and startled her. She fidgeted while dropping her work.
"Hello sir"
He looked at her with no response.
She ignored his cold demeanour and continued speaking."I dropped the report on your desk, you can check it out sir".
This time, he was ready to speak as his gaze looked at the reports. "Okay, I will check and get back to you, if there is any error, I will let you know" He responded, oblivious of the fact she was standing right next to him.
Her heart began to race. What is with this feeling? Emily touched her heart to see that it was racing fast. There is no room for any feelings, work is work" she reassured herself as she took a thorough look at the new marketing strategy draft she had finished working on. She smiled, feeling impressed by the work. This is surely a masterpiece, and Liam would be more than satisfied that he hired her for the job". Emily was sure about that.
" I can't let anything happen, and I won't let it happen, I have to keep things strictly professional despite the odds". Emily said, adjusting her shirt properly. She wasn't even his kind of woman. He has meant beautiful and classy ladies, and I won't ever matter not in this world or the next. He was every woman's dream and would certainly settle for the best and nothing more. I'm a little clumsy girl. He deserves better"
"Why does it always seem complicated when he is around? "Emily picked her phone to dial the taxi driver's number. It was 5am, and she had a long day as she proceeded to shut down her system, and after carefully arranging her belongings, she headed home and called it a day.
