A System's Cruel Joke

Author: : Luoye Fenfei
Genre: Sci-fi
My body was a battlefield of pain, every nerve screaming as I grasped for control. A chilling, mechanical voice echoed in my mind, a death sentence: "Mission failed. Countdown initiated: 30 days." I was Olivia, or rather, the soul inhabiting her body, given a second chance by a mysterious System to mend fractured relationships with Daniel and Ethan. I' d poured my heart into earning their affection, and for a time, I succeeded. We laughed, we shared meals, we were a family once more. My life extended, filled with a joy I' d never known. But then Clara arrived. Introduced as a long-lost cousin, she systematically dismantled everything. Charming, fragile, and a master manipulator, she twisted their love, turning their protective instincts to her, casting me as the jealous villain. My carefully earned affection points plummeted, and with them, my health. The pain began, a constant, gnawing reminder of their betrayal. Every attempt to remind them of our bond was met with accusation, and every tear from Clara sealed my fate. How could they be so blind? So utterly consumed by her act that they couldn' t see the real me, dying before their eyes? Was the past we shared, the love we'd built, truly so easily erased? As the countdown relentlessly ticked, a grim acceptance settled upon me. I was losing everything, abandoned by the very people I was fighting to live for. The fight was gone. But then, a cruel knock at the door – Daniel' s voice, impatient and cold. It was time for my final act.

Introduction

My body was a battlefield of pain, every nerve screaming as I grasped for control. A chilling, mechanical voice echoed in my mind, a death sentence: "Mission failed. Countdown initiated: 30 days."

I was Olivia, or rather, the soul inhabiting her body, given a second chance by a mysterious System to mend fractured relationships with Daniel and Ethan.

Chapter 1

A sharp, unbearable pain shot through Olivia' s body, jolting her awake. It felt like every bone was being ground into dust, every nerve set on fire. She gasped, curling into a ball on her bed, her knuckles white as she gripped the sheets. The cold sweat on her forehead felt like ice against her skin.

She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to breathe through the agony, but it was relentless.

A cold, mechanical voice suddenly echoed in her mind, devoid of any emotion.

[Mission failed. Host's remaining life is now on a fixed countdown. Terminal illness will result in death upon countdown completion.]

The voice was a familiar terror, a constant presence since she had woken up in this world. It was the System, the entity that had given her this second chance, a chance she had now officially lost.

The announcement brought a wave of dread that was even worse than the physical pain. It was the confirmation of her deepest fear. Her efforts, her struggles, her brief moments of happiness-they had all been for nothing.

[Countdown initiated: 30 days.]

Thirty days. A death sentence.

Olivia fumbled for the bottle of painkillers on her nightstand, her hands shaking so badly she almost dropped it. She poured a handful of pills into her palm, far more than the prescribed dose, and swallowed them dry. She didn' t care about the consequences anymore. She just wanted the pain to stop, even for a little while.

She lay back, waiting for the medication to kick in, her breaths coming in ragged gasps.

"How much time do I have left?" she asked the empty room, her voice a hoarse whisper.

[29 days, 23 hours, 58 minutes, and 12 seconds remaining.]

The System was cruelly precise. Each second ticking away was another step closer to the end.

[A new mission can be initiated. Recapture the affection of Daniel and Ethan. Each point of affection gained will extend the host's life.]

A sliver of hope, a lifeline dangled before her. But Olivia felt nothing but a profound, hollow despair. She shook her head, a bitter laugh escaping her lips.

"No," she whispered. "It's impossible. Not with her here."

Clara. The name itself was a source of pain. The long-lost family member who had returned like a fairy-tale princess and systematically dismantled Olivia' s life. Trying to win back Daniel and Ethan' s affection now was a fool's errand. Clara had them wrapped around her finger.

Olivia stared out her window, her gaze falling on the family living across the street. The father was pushing his young daughter on a swing, the mother watching with a warm smile. Their laughter drifted up to her room, a sweet, painful sound.

It felt like a lifetime ago, but she remembered what that was like. She remembered the warmth in her older brother Daniel' s eyes, the easy, protective way he would ruffle her hair. She remembered the shared jokes and comfortable silence with her childhood friend, Ethan, a bond that felt unbreakable.

When she first woke up in this body, she was a soul from another world, trapped by a mysterious System. Her mission was simple but daunting: survive. To do that, she had to mend the fractured relationships with Daniel and Ethan, who had become distant after a tragic accident plunged the original Olivia into a deep depression.

For a while, she had succeeded. She slowly broke through their walls of guilt and concern. The laughter returned. The shared meals, the late-night talks, the casual touches-they all came back. She had earned their affection, and with it, she had earned more time. She had felt true joy, a sense of belonging she had never known.

Then Clara arrived.

She was introduced as a distant cousin, a girl who had endured a difficult childhood and had finally found her way back to her family. She was charming, fragile, and masterfully manipulative. Almost overnight, all the love and attention Olivia had painstakingly earned was redirected to Clara.

Daniel' s protective instincts, once for Olivia, were now solely for Clara. Ethan' s loyalty, once unwavering, now belonged to Clara. Olivia tried to hold on, to remind them of their bond, but every attempt was met with misunderstanding and accusations. Clara was a master at playing the victim, twisting Olivia' s words and actions until she was cast as the villain-jealous, petty, and cruel.

Her affection points from the System plummeted. Her health, tied directly to the mission, began to deteriorate. The pain started as a dull ache and grew into the monster that now consumed her.

She had lost. It was over.

Acceptance settled over her, cold and heavy. There was no point in fighting anymore. All she could do was prepare for the end. She picked up her phone, her fingers hovering over the screen. She needed to contact a lawyer, to settle her affairs, to make arrangements for her own funeral. It was a surreal, grim task for someone so young, but it was her only remaining responsibility.

Just as she was about to make the call, a knock sounded at her door.

"Olivia?"

It was Daniel' s voice, laced with an impatient, questioning tone.

"What are you doing in there?"

Chapter 2

Olivia quickly ended the call before it could connect, her heart pounding. She stared at the door, her mind blank. Daniel's voice was no longer filled with the warmth she remembered but with a cool impatience she had grown accustomed to.

"Nothing," she called out, her voice raspy. "Just resting."

She heard him hesitate for a moment, then his footsteps receded down the hall. He didn' t press further. He never did anymore. The distance between her room and his felt like a vast, unbridgeable chasm.

The painkillers began to work, dulling the sharp edges of her agony into a manageable throb. Feeling a sudden thirst, she slowly got out of bed and made her way downstairs for a glass of water. The house was quiet, and she hoped to avoid everyone.

But as she entered the kitchen, she saw Clara sitting at the island, sipping a glass of milk. Clara looked up, her eyes widening in a display of innocent surprise.

"Olivia! I didn't know you were up," she said, her voice syrupy sweet. "I was just having some warm milk. It helps me sleep. Do you want some? I can pour you a glass."

She held up the carton of milk, a picture of perfect consideration. But Olivia knew better. She was severely lactose intolerant, a fact everyone in the house, including Clara, was well aware of. Daniel had once made a big deal of it, ensuring the housekeeper, Mrs. Davis, always had almond milk stocked just for her.

"No, thank you," Olivia said, her tone flat. She walked to the cupboard to get a glass for water. "I can't drink that."

Clara' s face fell, a look of hurt instantly clouding her features. "Oh, I' m so sorry, I completely forgot. I'm so thoughtless sometimes."

She set the carton down with a clatter, her lower lip trembling. It was a performance Olivia had seen countless times.

"It's just... I've been so worried about Daniel and Ethan lately. They seem so stressed. I just wanted to do something nice, and I messed up again," Clara sniffled, tears welling in her eyes. "You must think I' m so stupid. And you probably hate me because I take up so much of their time."

Olivia didn' t respond. She filled her glass with water, her back to Clara, trying to ignore the manipulative display.

"Why are you so cold to me, Olivia?" Clara's voice rose, laced with accusation. "Is it because I' m here? I know I don' t belong, but I have nowhere else to go. Don't you feel even a little bit sorry for me?"

Just then, footsteps sounded on the stairs. Daniel and Ethan entered the kitchen, drawn by the noise. They took one look at Clara' s tear-streaked face and their expressions hardened.

"Olivia, what did you do now?" Daniel' s voice was sharp, cutting through the silence.

Ethan rushed to Clara' s side, putting a comforting arm around her. "Clara, what' s wrong? Did she say something to you?"

Clara shook her head, burying her face in Ethan' s shoulder with a sob. "No, it' s my fault. I just offered her some milk, and I forgot about her... her condition. I' m so clumsy. I just make everything worse."

Daniel' s gaze on Olivia was icy. "She offered you something out of kindness, and you had to make her feel bad about it? Can' t you just be nice for once?"

"I didn't say anything," Olivia said, her voice barely a whisper. Her throat felt tight.

"You didn' t have to," Daniel snapped, stepping towards her. "Your face says it all. You walk around here with that miserable expression, making everyone feel guilty. Clara' s been through enough without you treating her like this."

He was so close now she could feel the anger radiating from him. He jabbed a finger at her chest.

"She' s family, Olivia. You need to start acting like it." He shoved her shoulder, not hard, but it was enough to make her stumble back against the counter. The glass of water slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor.

The sound of breaking glass seemed to stun everyone into silence for a second. Olivia stared at the shards glittering on the tiles, a reflection of her own shattered hope.

She looked up, meeting Daniel's eyes, then Ethan's. There was no sympathy there. Only frustration and disappointment.

Without a word, she turned and walked out of the kitchen, carefully stepping around the broken glass. She didn't look back. As she reached the stairs, she thought she saw a flicker of something in Ethan' s eyes-a brief, fleeting look of regret-before he turned his full attention back to comforting Clara.

"It's okay, Clara, don't cry," she heard Ethan murmur. "She didn't mean it."

"She' s just not herself lately," Daniel added, his voice softening as he spoke to Clara. "We' ll talk to her. Come on, let me get you something else."

Olivia slowly climbed the stairs, their soothing voices fading behind her. She had been replaced. It was a simple, brutal fact. And in their eyes, she was now the one who was wrong.
