A Second Chance, Fall In Love Again

Author: : REGINA MCBRIDE
Genre: Romance
The sharp pain in my head was nothing compared to my stepsister Sarah' s screams. My fiancé, Liam, already by her side, shot me a look of pure accusation: "Chloe, what the hell did you do?" Sarah clutched her ankle, twisting her face in agony, then whispered, "She was just... upset that you were holding my hand." A gentle poison. Liam' s suspicion solidified into certainty, his eyes hardening with disgust as he scooped Sarah into his arms. "Her ankle looks broken. We can' t carry her and help you walk. You' ll have to wait here." He abandoned me in the middle of nowhere, my own leg throbbing, my head pounding, leaving me utterly alone with a profound, bottomless despair. In the hospital, Sarah and her doctor brother, Dr. Evans, casually manipulated Liam, fabricating a diagnosis of a mere bruise for my fractured leg, and suggesting I was "not well." Liam, blinded by guilt and Sarah' s lies, agreed. The man I loved was gone, replaced by an angry stranger who punished me for a pain he refused to see. He pushed my wheelchair, demanding an apology, completely ignoring the new, blinding agony ripping through my leg as it jolted. A dark discoloration rapidly spread from my knee, yet Dr. Evans dismissed it as "just the bruising settling." They were going to send me to a mental institution. I looked at Liam, then at the ring he tossed to the floor-our future, discarded. Something within me broke, a cool, clear voice whispering: Let go of this life. I can give you a new one. I shed my old self, my art, my love for Liam. I was Chloe no more. As I finally walked onto the hospital rooftop, Liam' s scream cut through the air. He lunged, a desperate, impossible attempt to save me, only to fall with me.

Introduction

The sharp pain in my head was nothing compared to my stepsister Sarah' s screams.

My fiancé, Liam, already by her side, shot me a look of pure accusation: "Chloe, what the hell did you do?"

Sarah clutched her ankle, twisting her face in agony, then whispered, "She was just... upset that you were holding my hand."

A gentle poison. Liam' s suspicion solidified into certainty, his eyes hardening with disgust as he scooped Sarah into his arms.

"Her ankle looks broken. We can' t carry her and help you walk. You' ll have to wait here."

He abandoned me in the middle of nowhere, my own leg throbbing, my head pounding, leaving me utterly alone with a profound, bottomless despair.

In the hospital, Sarah and her doctor brother, Dr. Evans, casually manipulated Liam, fabricating a diagnosis of a mere bruise for my fractured leg, and suggesting I was "not well."

Liam, blinded by guilt and Sarah' s lies, agreed.

Evans dismissed it as "just the bruising settling."

They were going to send me to a mental institution.

Chapter 1

The sharp pain in Chloe' s head was a dull, distant throb compared to the screaming. It was Sarah, her step-sister, and her cries echoed through the dense, damp wilderness. Liam, Chloe' s fiancé, was already at Sarah' s side, his face a mask of panic and fury.

"Chloe, what the hell did you do?" Liam' s voice cut through the air, sharp and accusatory. He didn' t look at her, his entire focus on Sarah, who was clutching her ankle on the muddy ground, her face twisted in agony.

Chloe tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come out. She had slipped on the mossy rocks. They had all been walking together, and she had reached out to steady herself, accidentally brushing against Sarah. It all happened so fast. Now Sarah was hurt, and Liam was looking at her like she was a monster.

"I... it was an accident," Chloe finally managed to whisper, her voice trembling.

Sarah sobbed, a fresh wave of tears streaming down her cheeks. "Liam, it' s okay. I know she didn' t mean it. She was just... upset that you were holding my hand to help me over the rocks."

The words were a gentle poison. Chloe stared, her heart turning to ice. That wasn' t what happened. Liam had been ahead, and she and Sarah were behind. But Liam' s face hardened, his suspicion cementing into certainty. He believed Sarah completely.

"We have to get her out of here," Liam said, his voice flat and cold. He looked at Chloe, really looked at her for the first time since Sarah fell. There was no love in his eyes, only disgust. "Her ankle looks broken. We can' t carry her and help you walk. You' ll have to wait here."

"Wait here?" Chloe repeated, the words tasting like ash. "Liam, we' re in the middle of nowhere. You can' t just leave me." Her own leg was scraped and bleeding, her head was pounding, but he didn' t seem to notice or care.

"I can and I will," he snapped. He scooped a fragile, weeping Sarah into his arms. "I' ll send someone back for you. Don' t move from this spot."

Chloe watched, frozen in place, as Liam carried her step-sister away. He didn' t look back. The sounds of Sarah' s soft cries and Liam' s soothing murmurs faded into the trees, leaving Chloe in a silence that was louder than the screams. A sudden, unnatural chill swept through the clearing, and for a moment, Chloe felt as if something ancient and powerful was watching her from the shadows between the trees. She was alone, abandoned, and a profound, bottomless despair washed over her.

Chapter 2

In the hospital, the sterile smell of antiseptic filled Sarah' s private room. She lay propped against a mountain of pillows, her leg in a pristine white cast. She smiled sweetly at Liam as he fed her a spoonful of soup. "You don' t have to do this, Liam. You should be resting."

"Don' t be silly," Liam said, his voice soft. "It' s my fault we were out there. I should have been more careful with you." He glanced away, a flicker of something dark in his eyes. "I just can' t believe Chloe would do that. To push you out of jealousy."

"She was just having a bad day," Sarah said, her voice dripping with false magnanimity. "You know how she gets."

Liam' s jaw tightened. He did know. He and Chloe had been together for years, since they were teenagers. He' d seen her sensitive side, her artistic temperament that sometimes tipped into what he considered moodiness. He remembered her as a vibrant, passionate girl who painted canvases with explosions of color, a girl who saw beauty in everything.

But lately, especially since Sarah had moved in with them after her mother passed away, Chloe had become more withdrawn, quieter. He had seen it as clinginess, as insecurity. He hadn' t seen the quiet desperation in her eyes. Now, her silence in the wilderness, her lack of a real defense, seemed like an admission of guilt.

A secret, ugly thought coiled in the back of his mind. He hadn' t been there for Chloe. Not really. He had been so focused on his work, on making a name for himself, that her needs had become background noise. Sarah' s arrival had been a relief, another person to fill the quiet spaces in their home.

Suddenly, the door to the room opened and a doctor came in, clipboard in hand. Chloe was with him, supported by a nurse, her face pale and her eyes vacant. There was a large bandage on her forehead, and she limped heavily.

"Mr. Patterson," the doctor said grimly. "We need to talk about Ms. Chloe' s condition. The fall was more serious than we thought. Her scans show a significant concussion and a hairline fracture in her left femur."

Liam stood up, startled. "What? A fracture?"

Chloe didn' t react. She just stared at a point on the wall, her expression unnervingly calm. It was a calmness that felt wrong, a stillness that screamed of a spirit that had already given up.

"She' s lucky the injury wasn' t worse," the doctor continued.

Chloe' s lips curved into a faint, ironic smile. She looked at Liam, her eyes clear for the first time. "Lucky," she repeated, her voice a soft, hollow echo.
