Chapter 1 Crushed Dreams

Chapter One

Lana had always dreamt of this moment; holding the hand of her soul mate as she struggled to give birth to their child. While other women might not be particularly enthusiastic about the process of giving birth, it was something she had always yearned for.

She had always been prepared to embrace the pain because she felt there was no greater joy than being a mother.

The contractions that caused her teeth to clench in pain did not seem to hurt so much as she gazed into the eyes of her significant other.

"You are doing fine baby, just keep pushing and it will be over soon," Erek encouraged as he gently squeezed Lana's hand.

He was terrified because Lana was bleeding a lot and he couldn't imagine losing her. It was fairly common for a she-wolf to die on the birthing bed and with Lana being a human; her chances of survival were less than average.

"Just a little further Lana, I can see your baby's head," Zera called from between Lana's open legs.

Zera had helped give birth to majority of the pack's children, with Erek being one of those numbers. She was usually assisted by Kavia and Sildra, who were present now and prepared for any complications.

"Ahhhhhhh!!!!" Lana screamed in pain as she pushed and her whole body strained with the effort.

A loud piercing cry filled the room as her baby's head popped out into Zera's gentle waiting arms.

"That's it Lana, I need another mighty push to get the rest of the baby out of there, one more push and you can rest." Zera urged Lana to try again.

"Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!" Lana screamed louder than before as she gave it her all once more.

"It's a boy Erek," Zera said with a wide smile as she wrapped the child in a soft green blanket handed to her by Kavia.

"We have a boy Lana, I am so proud of you, my love." Erek kissed Lana's forehead and his eyes shone with unshed tears.

"His eyes are glowing silver, which means he has Wolf's Mark, you are very lucky Erek." Sildra said as she peered over Zera's shoulder to get a look at the baby.

Erek was indeed lucky; majority of half-breeds did not possess the wolf's mark.

This meant that although his mate was a human, their child had gotten more of Erek's genes; including wolf's mark and had all the abilities that a purebred would have.

Perhaps one day he might become an Alpha like me. Perhaps he will be so exceptional that the pack would actually allow a half breed lead them. Erek thought with a hopeful smile.

"Oh please, let me hold my baby in my arms." Lana pleaded weakly as she stretched out her arms.

"Just a minute, let me clean him up. Don't strain yourself Lana, you need to rest and I can see the question in your eyes Erek.

Once we stitch her up and she gets enough rest, she will be just fine." Zera said with a little smile as she gently wiped the baby with a warm towel.

Erek let out a deep breath that he wasn't even aware he had been holding, his mate and child were alright and he couldn't be happier as he stared into Lana's eyes.

Zera continued wiping the baby, but stopped when she got to his chest as her eyes widened in shock.

"What is this? But.. but.. bu, this doesn't make any sense. How.. wh.. why?" Zera stammered in shock.

"What's the matter Zera?" Erek asked in panic as he looked towards her.

"Is something wrong with my baby? What is wrong with my baby, Zera?" Lana asked with her eyes wide with fear as she struggled to sit up.

"Look!" Zera exclaimed as she held the baby towards Kavia and Sildra and they gasped in shock.

On the left side of the baby's chest, just above his nipple was a pink birthmark in the shape of a flower and that was what Zera, Kavia and Sildra stared at in horror.

Erek rushed to them and inhaled sharply when he saw the birthmark and he slowly turned to look at Lana with shock in his eyes.

"Why does your baby bear the mark of a Wolf Slayer, Lana?" Zera growled as her eyes glowed with a silver light.

She tossed the baby on the bed in disgust and the little one cried in protest at the rough treatment.

"My love, there must be some sort of explanation for this. Please explain so I will understand," Erek pleaded in a shaky voice as he knelt beside the bed.

"I am sorry Erek, I should have told you." Lana said as tears rolled down her face.

"She really is a wolf slayer! She must be a spy! They have broken our pact and now she must die!" Sildra shrieked as she went down on all fours and howled.

"No, please wait, I'm not a spy. I never meant for things to turn out like this! Erek please I'm sorry. My love for you is real, please believe me." Lana begged weakly as she stretched out her right hand to Erek.

"I believe you, my darling." Erek said as he held her outstretched hand.

The door opened wide and other members of the pack rushed in after hearing Sildra's howl.

"What is going on brother?" Lacan asked as he worriedly looked at Erek, his younger brother.

"The baby has the mark of a wolf slayer because his mother is one! He also bears wolf's mark! Lana tricked us all; she has given birth to an abomination; a hybrid!" Zera growled as hatred filled her eyes.

The other members of the pack growled as they walked further into the room and surrounded the bed where Lana lay.

Some stopped to look at the birthmark on the baby, but they all eventually ended up in a semicircle around Lana and Erek.

"They sent a spy to us? She must die for this! Step away from her, brother" Lacan said as his eyes glowed.

"No, I won't let you kill her!" Erek said as he glared at all of them present.

Erek had been trying to control the urge to change, but his other side won because of the danger that surrounded them. He had to protect his little family, no matter the cost and that was the only thing on his mind as he felt his clothes rip apart.

Grey fur rapidly spread out all over his body as he grew in size and his hands became paws tipped with deadly claws.

His mouth changed shape as it elongated and his teeth grew as they became razor sharp, while his ears were no longer at the side of his head but on top. He growled in warning as he got ready to attack.

He was magnificent as he stood before them and if not for the current situation, the pack would have been proud to call him their Alpha.

The other members had changed also and it was obvious that Erek was greatly outnumbered.

"Please spare our son, my sweet Daykan." Lana said weakly as she held Lacan's gaze.

It was a pity that she never got the chance to hold her child in her warm embrace.

Twenty Eight Years Later

Sam and Tina thought that it would be a wonderful idea to go hiking in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest for their third date. As they stared at the beautiful sun and felt the cool breeze surround them in the woods, it seemed that they had been right.

"Isn't nature just beautiful? I could spend weeks out here, just me and the great outdoors." Tina said with a content smile as the wind ruffled her waist length blond hair.

"You are absolutely right. But if you ever do want to spend weeks out here, give me a call; it would be just us and the great outdoors." Sam corrected with a wink.

He really did like Tina and enjoyed spending time with her and he hoped that she felt the same way. Maybe, this relationship could really go somewhere and they would be together for a long time.

Tina blushed at Sam's words, she couldn't wait to get home and have a long conversation on the phone with her girlfriends. It would be so nice to tell them about her new man and how she had finally gotten over Jake.

Sam stretched out his hand to her and she happily took it as they continued on their path.

They never noticed the beast stalking them from the thick bushes meters away. He was drooling as he watched them act out their little love play.

As he prepared to pounce, a part of him felt excited about turning their wonderful day into their worst nightmare. He landed on the man first and almost moaned in satisfaction as he sunk his teeth into Sam's throat.

Tina's scream of horror was the perfect soundtrack to his grand performance as he tore away a huge chunk of Sam's flesh and blood gushed out.

"Someone please help us!" Tina screamed as she began running in the direction they had come from.

He was after her in a flash. He really did love a chase and just couldn't get enough of human flesh.

Chapter 2 Moving Day

Chapter Two

As Daykan stood with his arms crossed, it occurred to him that he really did enjoy spending time at his gym, it felt more like a home than the place he laid his head to rest each night. Maybe it was because he felt in control and truly at peace here.

When he had thought about the kind of business he wanted to set up, a gym had seemed like the most suitable option.

He really wasn't an office guy and couldn't imagine sitting behind a desk from 9am to 5pm every day. Plus, he really wasn't a fan of dressing up in a suit and tie; at the gym he could literally be shirtless and it would not be inappropriate.

Daykan also enjoyed working out and his body showed off the results from all those times spent lifting weights.

He was six foot six inches tall with thick silver hair that was long in front and shorter at the back; he had light hazel eyes that always seemed to be sparkling.

There was also the fact that his gym body was enough to stop any girl in her tracks as she had a second, third and fourth look at that walking gift of nature because there was more than enough to drool at.

From the well-defined pecs to the chiseled abs and back that looked like it had been sculpted by Michelangelo, Daykan was a living, breathing advertisement of his gym; "Sweat it Out."

It was one of the most popular gyms in the city of Carson, Washington and Daykan took a certain pride in that.

He always felt like he was abandoning his child when he had to leave the gym at the end of the day and go back to the Estate which was on the outskirts of Carson.

To outsiders, the Moonstruck Estate seemed like a prestigious fraternity that was so hard to gain membership into.

Houses weren't sold to just anybody and if the Governing Council of the Estate didn't approve of the buyer then no amount of money could be used to gain access.

People weren't quite sure what criterion was used to judge prospective buyers because it seemed like there was no logic behind the accepted residents and the rejected ones.

But Daykan knew the criteria. "Werewolf."

Whoever wanted to acquire property in the Moonstruck Estate had to be a werewolf, subject to certain exceptions, like offspring of werewolves who were not fortunate enough to receive wolf's mark. Anybody else was wasting their time looking for somebody to bribe or convince to allow them be a part of the gated community.

Different packs occupied designated territories in the Estate in order to avoid any conflict and for the most part, they were fairly able to live in harmony. They came together once in a while for meetings or community events.

The Estate also had a secret path to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest which was close by and it gave the werewolves an ample avenue to let out their wild sides and get in touch with their inner animals.

A lot of them went for runs in werewolf form and also hunted some of the animals for a little sport.

Daykan had always felt out of place in the Estate and had a little apartment in Carson where he spent nights once in a while when it seemed that he couldn't stand to be there any longer.

He always came back though; maybe it was because he had no one else and didn't like feeling alone.

Even if they hated him there and treated him like an outsider, he was technically still a member of the Crimson Pack and it felt good to be a part of something.

"Day, do you think you could train with me today?" Tania asked in a seductive voice as she interrupted Daykan's train of thought, he had barely noticed her walking up to him.

Tania was a cute little thing with her light brown hair cut in pixie style and a little button nose. She had big blue eyes which were provocatively focused on Daykan as she slid her tongue across her slightly pink lips.

She wasn't particularly busty but had an hourglass shape and always wore clothes that accentuated her figure.

Right now, she was wearing a tiny purple sports bra that kinda reminded Daykan of a bikini top and tiny black shorts, which could almost pass off as panties.

Eight months ago, Daykan had slept with her once and since then, hadn't been able to shake her off.

If he had known she would get this attached, he would have just minded his business and kept it in his pants instead of stirring the proverbial pot. He had explained to her before they had sex that it would only be a one night thing and she had agreed.

But there was just something about Daykan that Tania just couldn't get enough of and she really hoped he would be willing to have another night with her.

However, to her dismay, he had avoided her since that magnificent night eight months ago and rejected all her advances.

"Jeez, I'm sorry I can't do that Tania. I am really busy right now but I am sure Dave would gladly assist you. Dave! Could you please come over and train with Tania?" Daykan called out to Dave, one of his fitness trainers as Tania pouted in annoyance.

"Sure thing boss." Dave replied as he walked over from the weights he had been cleaning. He was twenty two years old and still had this cute boyish look with blond hair and brown eyes.

"Good morning, Tania, I hope you are ready to sweat it out today." Dave teased with a wide grin.

"Whatever, let's just get this over with." Tania said nonchalantly as she walked towards the treadmills.

Dave looked at Daykan; confused at Tania's suddenly change in energy, but Daykan just shrugged and entered his office.

**************************************

Naomi Peters was really excited about this move because she was in dire need of a fresh start and a change of scenery. Carson seemed like the right place and as she slowly drove down the street in her red jeep, she really liked what she was seeing. She had spent days studying the map, so she was sure of where to go.

Carson wasn't as populated as Manhattan and the less busy streets were a breath of fresh air from all the congestion she was used to. Her mother felt she was crazy for giving up life in a bubbly place like Manhattan, for quiet little Carson.

But, that was just like Agatha Peters, she was somehow able to feel calm and happy with all that noise around her; and she could never imagine leaving her job at the law firm for anything else.

Twenty five year old Naomi had taken over her nerdy dad who had been a doctor. She was technically still a doctor, although her patients weren't human beings and that was one of the things she loved about them.

Animals were easier to be around than humans.

They loved unconditionally and always made you feel special and cherished; they wouldn't lie to you like humans would. Naomi sometimes wished that she had come to the world as an animal; maybe she would have endured less pain that way.

It would have been exciting being an eagle, able to soar above clouds without a care in the world.

She felt lucky that she had found a clinic in need of a vet in Carson because she couldn't have imagined doing any other job.

She would have probably opened her own clinic if it had come to that; Naomi wasn't the kind of girl to give up on her dreams. She might not look it, but she was one tough cookie.

Naomi had waist length jet black hair that looked darker than a moonless night and bright green eyes that would remind anyone of a cat. She had a pointed nose; and beneath that were almost too full red lips that gave her face character.

She wasn't so tall being five foot six inches, but she didn't really enjoy wearing heels. She was really busty with a moderate behind, and didn't particularly have prominent hips, but she had learnt to be content with the cards life had dealt her.

Come Monday, in three days' time and she would be officially starting her job at "Paw Prints Clinic." Her things had been sent out to her apartment the previous day and she only had a few belongings in the jeep with her.

The clinic was almost at the outskirts of town and a little close to the Gifford forest but Naomi didn't mind. She resisted the urge to take a little detour and drop by her new work place because she hadn't unpacked anything and that was going to take her a while.

"Patience little one, you'll have your fun soon." Naomi mumbled to herself as she smothered the temptation.

"Oh, that's a nice looking gym. Maybe I should finally start working out like I've been planning to all these years," Naomi said as she drove by "Sweat It Out."

Chapter 3 Terrible First Impressions

Chapter Three

Daykan really loved his car so when seventy-eight year old Bella Bloom backed up and crashed into the bumper as she was trying to the exit the gym parking lot; he resisted the urge to curse and throw a fit.

By the time he rushed out, Mrs. Bloom was stepping out of her twenty year old car and it was obvious that she was badly shaken.

"Mrs. Bloom are you okay?"

"I'm perfectly fine. I'm usually a really careful driver."

"I know," Daykan said reassuringly.

She really was a careful driver and word around town was that she had never gotten so much as a speeding ticket.

"I'm so sorry." She looked up at him with guilt filled eyes.

"My insurance will cover the damages so you don't need to worry. You should come inside and sit for a little bit. You look a little jittery." Daykan suggested gently.

"Okay." She carefully made her way back to the entrance. Daykan walked a few steps behind her, ready to catch her in case she fell.

He escorted her out thirty minutes later when she was calm enough to leave. It was only after she had driven off that he summoned the courage to take a look at the damage.

The left side of the front bumper had been badly dented and he was going to need to take it to the body shop.

Asides from that, everything seemed fine with his baby. He trusted that black Land Rover more than most people because it hadn't let him down yet.

"How could a little old car driven by even older woman do this to you girl?" Dakyan murmured as he poked the dent.

Daykan left the gym by about 10:00pm. He was careful as he drove because it was common to see animals dashing out of the woods and into the road; his car had been through enough today.

As he cruised along the highway, he met the kind of scene he had been trying to avoid.

From what he could tell, the accident had been about an hour ago and he could smell the blood without having to get close. The victim of the hit and run was a deer and she was badly wounded in her side.

He could hear her labored breathing and was surprised that she had survived that long.

Daykan considered just driving off because her heartbeat was so weak and it wasn't likely she was going to last much longer. But what held his attention was a fawn lying by the side of the victim; gently nuzzling its mother's neck.

The baby deer only looked a few weeks old and it was going to face this harsh world alone if its mother died.

"Get a hold of yourself. You literally eat deer for crying out loud," He groaned as he punched the steering wheel in frustration.

But he couldn't help but think of how that fawn was so much like him. It didn't seem fair to allow it grow up without a parent and that was what pushed him to step out of the car. As he drew near, the animals instantly became agitated because they could sense he was a predator.

"Now, now, I need you guys to calm down. I've already had dinner and I'm just here to help." He said softly as he approached them.

He crouched close to them and gently rubbed the mother's head.

He picked her up as gently as possible and carried her to the car. The fawn quickly followed as he laid its mother on some gym towels in the backseat. He picked up the baby, placed it beside its mother, entered the driver's seat and quickly started the engine.

"Hang in there girl, the clinic is only minutes away," Daykan said as he met her eyes in the rearview mirror.

************************

Naomi had been working at the clinic for a week now and everything had been going on smoothly. Things were not too busy and she had two great nurses to assist her. It was a slow night so she had let them go early and was getting ready to lock up.

She tidied up a few things and checked on the animals.

"How are you doing guys? I can see that you're already getting better Cookie. I'm sure you'll be hopping away in no time." She said with a smile to a bunny with a sprained ankle.

By the time she was done with her rounds, it was already to 11. She was about to lock the front door when she heard a car speeding down. She spun around and a black jeep parked a few feet away from her.

A huge man stepped out, opened the back door and carried out what looked like a wounded deer. She was surprised to see a fawn jump out as well.

"I need help. She got hit by a car!" The man said urgently.

Naomi immediately pushed the clinic door open, "Carry her inside quickly!"

Daykan froze as he heard the vet's voice.

Her clear order seemed like a sound he had been waiting to hear all his life. He had been so preoccupied with the deer that he hadn't noticed how delicious this vet smelled. He could pick up traces of her scent even with the animal covered in blood in his arms.

"Did you hear me? This is not the time to have a panic attack. I will try to carry her myself if you are too flustered to," The vet said impatiently.

Panic attack?

He did not have panic attacks.

He was tempted to drop the deer in this puny woman's arms so she could eat her words and realize that if she thought she was strong enough to bear all that weight, she was in over her head. But this wasn't the time to be petty.

Daykan quickly made his way past her and she followed closely.

"Door by your left, drop her on the operating table." Naomi ordered as she washed her hands. "Go to the third room on your right and lock the fawn in a cage.

Make sure it has enough water and then you can have a seat in the waiting room." Naomi ordered as she ushered Daykan out and shut the door before he had a chance to say a word.

Daykan blankly stared at the door and then looked down at the fawn. The fawn stared up at him with a similarly blank expression.

"Who the hell does she think she is? I have half a mind to leave you out so you can roam around and chew up all her papers." Daykan said as he locked up the fawn after ensuring it had enough water.

He took a seat in the waiting room and Little Miss Orders popped out hours later. She was in scrubs and he couldn't help noticing that a few strands had come loose from the messy bun on the top of her head.

"How is she?" Daykan stood up.

"She lost a lot of blood and some ribs are badly bruised; but I'm sure she's going to make it because she's a fighter."

Daykan heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank you. How much will be needed to take care of her and the fawn? I can use my card right?"

"Before we talk about that, how far away did the accident occur?" Naomi asked flatly.

"About fifteen minutes away."

"So what made you turn back? Did guilt finally set in?" Naomi crossed her arms.

"I don't understand what you mean." Daykan crossed his arms as well because he felt defensive under her steely green gaze.

"She looked like she got her injuries at least an hour ago. She would have gone through less pain if you had brought her immediately it happened. Hitting her was an accident but leaving her there was a choice you made. Although I'm glad that you did eventually go back for her."

She thinks I was the one who hit the deer? Daykan finally understood what her attitude was all about.

"Wait, you're making a mistake. I wasn't the one who hit her. I was passing by and saw her injured on the road."

"Do you really think I'm stupid enough to believe that? I saw the damage to your car!"

Damage? Oh, the dent from Mrs. Bloom.

"That dent has nothing to do with that deer." Daykan bit out.

"So you're an animal hater and a liar?" Naomi laughed sarcastically. "I already commended you for having the conscience to go back for her, but to think that you still have the guts to deny it."

"I don't give a damn about your commendation when I didn't do what you're accusing me of."

"How does it feel to drive around in your big car and leave innocent animals bleeding to death on the road?"

"I noticed your big car in the parking lot and that jeep looks like it can crush bones." Daykan replied with a stiff smile.

"Well at least my car has no animal-related dents!"

"Neither does mine!"

"These animals have no one to speak up for them. You deserve to be arrested for animal cruelty!" Naomi was getting red with anger.

"Oh really? A vet and an officer? I would like to see you try to arrest me." Daykan held out his hands with a smirk and Naomi resisted the urge to tackle him.

"Just give me your card so you can leave. The sooner you're out of here, the better I will feel." She took a deep breath to calm her nerves.

Daykan gave her his card.

"Are you sure I shouldn't open an account for you so there'll be money to take care of the next poor creature you leave to die by the side of the road?" Naomi asked in a singsong voice as she raised a brow.

Daykan chose not to say anything because she wouldn't listen either way. He focused on controlling his temper instead. He was better than an average werewolf when it came to keeping his cool but this woman had gotten under his skin.

She handed over his card and he immediately turned around to leave.

"I hope I never have to see you again," Naomi muttered.

"Ditto," Daykan replied and slammed the door behind him.

*******************************************

Naomi was so upset that she hardly slept a wink that night. She kept having dreams of how much pain the deer had to endure when she had been fifteen minutes away. If the douchebag had immediately driven her over, she would have gotten some relief in no time.

By the time the sun rose, her mood hadn't improved and she decided to go to the gym; because it seemed like a good idea to work off all that pent-up rage. She changed into gym clothes that she had never worn and drove to the gym.

She supposed some people jogged there instead of driving but she was sticking with baby steps. She was instantly impressed as she walked in. The place looked great and almost made her eager to sweat.

"Who do we have here? Changed your mind about arresting me?" She heard a familiar voice behind her and turned around as she came face to face with the douchebag.

Damn!
