Introduction

Ten years with Ethan, my high school sweetheart, culminated in the diamond ring I' d always dreamed of.

My engagement party buzzed with excitement, a celebration of our perfect love story.

But the dream shattered when Ethan violently shoved me at the party, his voice ice-cold.

Then, a scene I' ll never erase: Ethan, on our marital bed, with Chloe-my old friend, now my bitter enemy.

And the chilling truth: his proposal wasn't for me at all.

The ring I wore bore Chloe' s initials.

Our apartment, my future, everything, was meticulously designed for her, a cruel charade.

He ripped down our photos, denied my pain, and then, he slapped me, demanding I apologize to the very person destroying my world.

My own parents, my mentors, had even distanced themselves, thanks to Chloe's past manipulations-all known to Ethan.

I was a pawn, a placeholder in their twisted game of revenge and manipulation.

How could the man who promised to love and protect me conspire with the woman who stole my art scholarship, the woman he knew was my deepest wound, to orchestrate such a public humiliation?

But no more.

On the very day he planned to discard me at the altar, I decided to reclaim my story.

I canceled the wedding, booked a flight overseas, and exposed their entire deceitful plot to his horrified family.

This wasn't an ending; it was my defiant beginning.

Chapter 1

Ten years with Ethan, my high school sweetheart.

He finally proposed.

I was so happy.

Our friends threw us an engagement party.

Everyone was cheering.

Someone shouted, "Ethan, make a toast to Sarah!"

He looked at me.

Then he shoved me hard.

I fell.

My hand hit a champagne flute on the floor.

Glass shattered.

Pain shot up my arm.

Blood.

Ethan just stood there.

He said, "Don't be so clumsy."

His voice was cold.

Later, at urgent care, they stitched my hand.

I went back to our new apartment.

The one we picked together.

I saw Ethan.

He was with Chloe.

My old friend. My enemy.

They were on our bed.

The bed we were supposed to share as a married couple.

They were close. Too close.

I heard Ethan's voice.

"Chloe, please, come back to me. I'll marry you. You'll be my bride."

My heart stopped.

I couldn't breathe.

I had to get out.

I called Candace, my boss.

She once mentioned an overseas assignment.

"Is that spot still open?" I asked.

My voice was shaking.

"Sarah? Yes, it is. Are you taking it?"

"Yes," I said. "I am."

She sounded pleased.

I looked at the designer dress Ethan bought me for the party.

It was a size too small.

I always felt tight in it.

Now I knew why. It was Chloe's size.

I threw it in the trash.

We had security cameras installed during renovations.

I checked the feed on my phone.

Disconnected.

I reconnected it from my app.

The live feed appeared.

Chloe. In our apartment.

She wore lingerie.

Lingerie Ethan bought for me.

I never wore it. It wasn't my style.

Chloe laughed, looking at my wedding photos with Ethan.

Mocking them.

Then Ethan walked in.

He started taking down all the photos of me and him.

Every single one.

Chloe spoke.

"Did you see her face? That proposal was a good idea. It really got my attention."

My blood ran cold.

"Everything for her," Chloe continued, "the apartment decor, her clothes, even this ring. It was all for me, wasn't it?"

She held up her hand. My engagement ring.

"The inscription, 'C.A.' For Chloe Adams."

Ethan smiled at her.

He kissed her. Passionately.

Numb. I was numb.

I looked at my own engagement ring.

The one on my uninjured hand.

I twisted it.

Inside, tiny letters. C.A.

Chloe Adams.

Not Sarah Miller.

The ring felt heavy.

It slipped from my fingers.

It clattered on the sidewalk, then rolled.

Right into a street drain.

Gone.

I was just a placeholder.

A tool for Ethan to get Chloe.

Chloe, who ruined my art school scholarship years ago.

My biggest dream. Ethan knew.

He knew how much that hurt.

On the camera, Chloe whispered to Ethan.

"Let's elope. On your wedding day with Sarah. That would be perfect."

Ethan's eyes lit up.

"Yes," he said. "Perfect."

I watched them.

Then I started laughing.

A crazy, hysterical laugh.

It turned into sobs.

I sank to the ground.

Chapter 2

I waited outside the apartment building.

Soon, Ethan and Chloe came out.

They were laughing.

Ethan saw me.

His face turned annoyed.

"What are you doing here?" he asked.

He looked me up and down.

"You look a mess."

I just stared at Chloe.

Ethan moved, trying to shield Chloe from my gaze.

He used to shield me from Chloe.

"Chloe was just helping me with some things in the apartment," Ethan said.

An excuse. A bad one.

"In lingerie? On our bed?" I asked. My voice was flat.

Ethan' s face flushed with anger.

"Chloe is like family, Sarah. You know that."

Or maybe she was his stepsister. The story changed sometimes.

"She's the daughter of the woman who helped destroy my future," I said.

Referring to the art scholarship Chloe stole.

Ethan's hand moved fast.

He slapped me.

Across the face. Hard.

"Apologize to Chloe," he demanded.

My cheek burned.

My injured hand, the one he hurt at the party, throbbed.

Fresh blood seeped through the bandage.

"No," I said.

Chloe stepped forward.

"Ethan, it's okay. I'm used to Sarah being like this."

She sounded so innocent.

"See?" Ethan said to me. "Chloe is forgiving. You need to get over the past, Sarah. You're so petty."

Then he said the words that broke what little was left of me.

"No wonder your own parents don't like you anymore. No wonder your art mentors gave up on you."

Chloe' s sabotage had caused rifts. Disappointment.

Ethan knew all of it.

He shoved me again.

I stumbled back, hitting a lamppost.

He took Chloe's arm and they walked away.

I remembered him as a boy.

"I'll always love you, Sarah. Always protect you."

His promises were now just painful barbs.
