The weather was just the way I liked it, windy and sunny. I can taste freedom at the tip of my tongue and it feels so elegant. No more anyone monitoring me, no more hearing the gossip of my course mates. I am going to make sure I enjoy every bit of my stay in New Jersey.
"Wifey!" a very familiar voice that I will always be able to recognize anywhere called.
I turned with a big smile on my face to see her running towards me at full speed. Wow, I didn't know how much I missed this girl until now.
My name is Evelyn Grayson, and I am a 21-year-old final-year student. And the slender pretty lady running towards me is my best friend AKA, my husband.
Ava and I have been together since the day she smashed a boy's nose for calling me a whore's daughter in elementary school. It was hard for me that day.
First time in school and everyone has already known that my mum is a whore. Since then, we have been inseparable until the day she was to move with her parents to New Jersey, where she was to stay for college.
She asked me to come with her, and I wished I could, but I was still controlled by my mother. And immediately that control was gone, applying for a new school in New Jersey was the first thing I did before I told Ava that I was coming.
And here I was in front of the airport watching my best friend shout out to me like a crazy person as she runs to meet me. I could feel the happiness from the expression on her face, and I was so happy that I came.
Before I knew what I was doing, I ran off to meet her also, hugging her while she was doing the same. Her body was shaking as she sobbed on my shoulder. I miss this girl, the same girl who was with me when I lost the most important part of my life.
As I thought back to how she stood by me through my difficult times, I couldn't stop the tears from rolling down my cheeks. How many years has it been now since I last saw her?
"Husband, why are you crying? Do you want to ruin your make-up?" I teased, wiping away the tears that were already trailing down her cheek.
"What happened to you? You have slimmed down" she hiccuped cupping my cheeks in her hands and checking me out from head to toe.
Someone who doesn't know, will think that we were a couple. Countless people have thought the same way, back when we were still young and always together.
"I think I'm still the same way I was three years ago"
"No, you are not. You have slimmed down, but don't worry, I will make sure you gain a lot of weight before you know it"
Smiling I said, "make sure you do just that ok"
"Ok" she nodded childishly as she stared at me. Before I could ask her what was wrong, she started running around the airport, telling every single person that her wife had come to stay with her. I couldn't help but laugh out loud.
But if I don't stop her now, people will think she is crazy.
"Ok girl, I think they get it"I muttered as we both burst out laughing. It was hilarious.
"Come on, my car is down the road". We both walked hand in hand to her guy and I'm not surprised she was driving a Ferrari. It has always been her dream car.
"A Ferrari huh" I grinned. She laughs putting my things in the booth.
"I told you that whenever you come, I will use a Ferrari to pick you up," she grinned.
We entered and she drives off. I'm enjoying the ride with Ava, it has been so long since we last saw each other up close like this.
"What are you looking at? Anything on my face?". She asked, touching her face to see if anything was actually on her it.
"There is nothing on your face Ava, I just missed you that's all" I whispered. She blinked up at me and hugged me.
"Eyes on the road, Ava" I shout out. She is crazy, how can she hug me when she is driving?
"Am sorry, I am just sentimental right now".
I started laughing because If she could see her face right now, she will also laugh." I'm so going to relish it here"
"Of course, you will, I am going to make it my priority to make sure you never remember that psychopath you call a mother again. I'm going to erase all your memories of her with good ones". I have known Ava for many years, and I know she means everything that she just said.
I didn't bother replying to what she said, but instead, I shut my eyes and just savor the moment. I can still remember how crazy it was the day I told my mom that I was leaving. She nearly ran mad that evening even though she was mad.
I mean, what woman in her right sense can't control their sex dive? She was mad, to begin with.
"What did you just say?" She asked me that evening.
"I said I am moving to New Jersey tomorrow morning" I repeated my sentence, ignoring the dead glare she was giving me.
"Why?"
"To complete my studies, and to start a new life". Maybe I shouldn't have said that, then she won't have lost it. But I don't regret it one bit. I should have said it earlier.
"So you want to leave me, huh? You ungrateful bitch. You think I will let you leave" she squealed right at my face, but I didn't move from my spot.
I just stayed there and listened to her ranting for the last time. When I had had enough, I looked her right in the eyes and said, "You can't stop me, I am leaving and there is nothing you can do about it". With that being said, I walked back into my room to continue parking.
Even from the closed door of my room, I could still hear her cry and her ruining whatever her hand landed on, but I ignored her and am happy I did.
Glancing back at my best friend, I smiled. This year and the ones to come are sure going to be the best years of my life.
Ava isn't the cleaning type, so seeing her apartment clean and in order is shocking.
Grinning up at her, I asked, "since when did you start cleaning?"
"What do you take me for? I sometimes clean you know" she mutters acting like my statement hurt her when I know pretty well it didn't.
When she sees that I am not buying her lie, she grumbles as she walks into the kitchen, with me following her.
"Fine. I paid someone to do the cleaning for me".
I smile, of course I know she paid someone.
"I know".
She immediately let out a laugh and then dragged me out of the kitchen into a bedroom. It is a nice-looking bedroom with a window by the wall, just the way I like it.
"This is your bedroom, mine is by the left. Why don't you settle in first, I will be right back" she grinned as she made her way out of the room. Leaving me alone to my thought.
After I rearranged some things in the room to my taste, I walked to the kitchen to carry my suitcase back to the room, where I started to unpack my bag.
Shortly after I finished showering, I changed into a new dress and was about to go find Ava when my phone started ringing.
I picked up the phone, not expecting to see my mum calling. I was expecting her call soon, but not so soon.
I dismissed the call and was about to leave the room when Ava entered, putting on a... I don't know whether to call it a dress or not.
Ava is wearing black leather pants with a net top that shows off the black bra she was putting on inside. Wow, people do change with time.
" Where are you going dress like that?" I asked curiously.
"To a party, and you are coming with me".
Hell no! I'm not going anywhere with her.
She frowned when she saw the disapproved look on my face. She pouted her face and cling to my hand pleading with me over and over again to go with her.
I can't believe that after how many years now, I still have to deal with a clingy Ava again. I thought she had outgrown these.
"Come on, Evelyn, you need to go out and have fun. You are no longer with that bitch remember, you are now free" she reminded me. And she was right, I need to live a little
I have to forget about the past and enjoy myself. After all, that's why I came here, to forget.
Smiling up at her, I cupped her face in my hand and said,
" you are right Ava, I have to have fun"
"Now you are talking, we are going to drown ourselves in alcohol today like never before" she yelled.
I won't be doing that anyway. Not knowing what is happening around me is what I hate the most, so getting drunk isn't part of what I will be doing tonight. I just nodded my head and let her lead me out of the apartment.
"Aren't we there yet?" I asked for the tenth time since we started driving, and Ava was already getting annoyed by my constant asking.
Stopping the car in front of what looked like a company, Ava got down as she handed the key to a guard.
I awkwardly got down too and went to meet her at the entrance of the building, where she stood in front of two gigantic guards.
"You know when you told me that we were going to a party, I wasn't foreseeing us going to a company"I whispered to Ava. She smiled and handed over her jacket and passed the ticket to the guards, motioning for me to do the same.
"This is a company, and only crucial and wealthy ones are given the pass tickets. And this party is one in town, thrown by the owner of the company himself. Is hard for just anyone to get in"she explained immediately after we entered the company.
People were wandering all over the place, and from their dresses, I know I wasn't even a quarter of their level. Ava led me to the elevator and we both entered with some other people.
"So how do you manage to get a pass ticket then?" I asked how.
"I have my ways," she grinned. Of course, I know she has her ways.
As the elevator opened, I was met with a view I wasn't expecting. There were people everywhere, not just people, but well-built people that are releasing an omen of richness. I was suddenly intimidated.
"You ok, "Ava asked, staring at my face.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just haven't seen anything like this before"
"You haven't seen anything yet. Come on, let's go to the bar" she giggled as she dragged me through the thousand bodies to the bar where she ordered a drink.
I watched how ladies shamelessly throw themselves at the guys without even thinking twice. How they allow the men to do whatever they want with their bodies. It disgusts me and I wish I can just spank all of them one after the other.
The people inside this place were just the set of people that I hate. The ones that throw themselves at men, and the ones that accept them willingly. Aren't they even ashamed of themselves?
I watched as a lady walked towards a group of men with just her undies on. What sort of party even allows a lady to walk around half-naked when it is not even a strip club?
"Hello, hello, am I speaking to someone here?" Ava called, waving her hands in front of her eyes to gain back my attention.
"Am sorry, what were you saying?"
She sighed, looking a bit saddened that I wasn't even paying attention to her. I feel guilty blocking her out when she is only trying to help me adjust.
"What were you thinking?"
"Am sorry, I was a bit distracted. So, what were you saying"
"They are playing my favorite song, come let's go dance" she grinned happily.
"Ava, you know I don't dance," I said awkwardly. The atmosphere was getting suffocating.
"It's been three years now, Evelyn, don't you think you should start back ...." I suddenly cut her shut. This is a topic I hate talking about, and she should know better.
"Ava, I don't want to talk about it, ok. I am no longer doing it again". The smile that was once on her face faded away, but she didn't talk about it anymore.
"Ok, fine, I am sorry that I alluded to it. Anyway, I am going to dance, enjoy yourself while I'm gone, ok?" Without waiting for my reply, she walked majestically to the dance floor which was already filled with people dancing, and she had no problem blending in.
She never had any difficulty blending into anything. That's how she is. Right from when we were still young.
After watching Ava for a long time and seeing she won't be getting into trouble anytime soon, I decided to visit the restroom. I am already tired of sitting here and watching people without dignity mess up themselves.
As I was coming out of the restroom, I heard some commotion down the hall. It sounded like a female crying.
Just ignore it, Evelyn
But my self-pity got the better of me. I walk toward the noise, and I wish I didn't. Then I won't have seen this awful scene.
A beautiful lady is on her knees crying and begging an ignorant jerk who just stood there watching her begging.
What a jerk!
He is putting on what, I think, is a billion-dollar suit, with his hands covered in gloves. Seems like he has had enough of the girl pleading because the next thing he did was to kick the girl's hand off his trouser as he bent to her level.
"I hate the clingy type you know, you are a whore, and you should act like one. Understood?" he yelled right at her face as he stood up.
I should just leave them to their business, but my busy body won't let me. It is already too late to just walk away because he is staring right at me. His obsidian eyes were focused directly on me, and it feels like he is staring right into my soul.
His eyes were intimidating, but I didn't let them daunt me. I stared right back at him without breaking eye contact.
"Any problem?" He asked, walking steadily towards me.
Just say no Evelyn, just say no and walk away,
"Yes there is a problem"
shit! I and my big mouth. I hate complicated situations the most.
"Really? What could your problem be, then?"
"Don't you think you should apologize to her?"
Evelyn! What's wrong with you?
" Who? This whore? Haha, you shouldn't worry about her, she knows her place"
what a jerk. How could he say something like that? I just feel like whacking him right in the face.
"Don't you think you are being too harsh on the girl?" I asked, but the lunatic just laughed.
"You shouldn't worry about her, she will be fine. But what is a pretty girl like you doing here?" He asked as he attempted to caress my cheeks, but I was quick to move away from him.
"You know, I hate your type the most". I know that this man standing in front of me can sue me in court if he desires, but the chances of us ever meeting again is zero. So, I have nothing to lose.
"You are a psychopath that thinks he can get anything he wants with just a snap of his finger" with that being said, I turned to walk away, but a jerk will always be a jerk.
"Stop acting like Mary, it is ladies like you that are the worst. I called them sluts". Okay, now that just seals it all.
Before I can think of my actions and consequences, I was already walking back to him. And the smile that was on his face grew wider.
He may be thinking that I am giving in to him, but my action wiped away that smile from his pretentious face. Without thinking twice, I slapped him, and damn it feels good to have that smile off his face.
"Am more like the viper than Mary". I walked away with my shoulders held high.
I walk back into the hall to find out that Ava wasn't where I left her earlier. Where could she have gone to?
I left the hall and took the elevator to the entrance to find her looking all over the place for no one I know of.
"Who are you looking for?". She jumped out of fright, making me laugh. It's good to have a best friend who knows how to lighten the mood.
"You scared me. Where have you been?" she asked worried. I didn't mean to make her worry. I was planning to go and come back quickly unto I met that jerk. Only the thought of him get me fired up again.
Way to ruin my day, jerk.
Ava saw the change in my expression and grew worried again," What happened?" She asked.
"Nothing much. I just met an asshole today, that's all".
"Wow! He must have been a real asshole to have to get you cussing. Something that I haven't been able to do for years, I should thank this man" she teased but stopped when she saw the serious look on my face.
"Sorry. So, tell me what happened?"
"I will tell you later, for now, let's go home". I saw the hesitation on her face, she would rather not leave yet, but I would rather not stay there either.
"I will just wait for you in the car, enjoy yourself, and please don't enjoy too much, ok" I sighed as she hugged me and bounce childishly back to the elevator.
When we got home, it was already 2:30. After I came out of the bathroom, Ava and I share,I saw Ava arranging lots and countless pictures. She must have taken them when we were at the party. How can I forget her hobby so soon?
"How did you carry a camera in there without being noticed?" I asked, not at all surprised. She has always been a sneaky person since we were young.
"Are you seriously asking me that?" She asked with feigned surprise. I just shook my head and went to sit beside her as I went through the pictures.
The pictures were all nicely taken. I don't understand why she isn't studying photography, she would have made a good photographer.
" What do you use them for anyway? I know you are not a fangirl"
"I sell them to students in my department"
Those students don't know what to do with money then.
"These pictures are the pictures of the richest bachelors in the whole of New Jersey. Who won't want to have a picture of them" she asked dreamily. I wonder what was wrong with ladies nowadays.
"Especially Sebastian Carter, the owner of diamond pearl hotel. The most famous and most expensive 5-star hotel. To me, it is more like a house. There are suits, and there is even a beach in there, can you believe it?" Ava all but ranted. Something was wrong with my friend.
