Sophia had always been a little reserved, focused on her studies and hesitant to dive into the world of relationships. But when she met Ethan in a freshman workshop, something shifted. Ethan was everything she wasn't -- charming, outgoing, and full of ambition. He had an effortless way of making people feel seen, and from the moment he smiled at her, Sophia knew her life was about to change.
--------IN HER APARTMENT --------
Maya: "Soph, where the hell did you drop your phone, your mom has been calling"
"Really, Thanks BFF" Maya scoffed.
"So tell me about your day today, guessed something good happened today" said Maya.
"Well well well what can i say, somethings happens and you know the full story darling."
"See who is gonna be dating soon" Maya said chirping.
Sophia chuckled. "I have a lot to learn from you dear, anyways what about Mark ?
Maya threw a pillow at Sophia. Sophia started laughing out loud "Okay i get he's not your type and both of you is over, Sorry Mi lady"
Both Sophia and Maya talked and laughed throughout the day.
The following day, they were paired together for a class project, and what started as a simple academic partnership quickly blossomed into something more. They spent hours working together in the library, and before they knew it, they were inseparable.
Ethan was everything Sophia had ever wanted in a partner. His energy was contagious, his laughter was infectious. He spoke about his dream of becoming a business major with such passion Sophia couldn't help but be drawn into his vision. His promises felt like a lifeline to her-- an assurance that their future together would be full of success and happiness.
Ethan: " You know, I could see us doing this forever-- building our dreams together."
Sophia (laughing): "Is that a promise or just your way of keeping me around?"
Ethan: "It's a promise. You'll see. What more can I ask for. Huh? The school belle that is smart, hot, cute, kind, hardworking, honest and my love (*winks*) all by my side."
Sophia (blushes): Ethan!
"I LOVE YOU" I LOVE YOU TOO Sophia said smiling.
--------ETHAN---------
Looking into her eyes, I can see the love she has for me. she's so pure and damn she's hot, she's smart and sweet. *smiles* having her all to myself is a win for me.
She's is patient enough to listen to all my talks even when i was blabbering nonsense, yet she was looking at me lovingly, all the love she has for me is for me alone.
--------SOPHIA--------
OMG! I never knew falling in love can be surreal like this, Arrghh, somebody pinch me (laying on her bed and hugging her pillow to herself). MY FIRST LOVE. She fell asleep thinking about Ethan.
By the end of their first year, they're the "it" couple on campus. Everyone assumes they're destined for a future together. Their relationship seemed unshakable-- until it wasn't.
As the summer came and went, Sophia found herself counting down the days until they would be back on campus. Ethan had already hinted that they would be spending summer apart-- his internships and family obligations meant he wouldn't be able to visit me as much. But Sophia didn't worry. She trusted him completely. He had always assured her, saying he would make time for her, that he would never leave her behind.
*Sighs*
"SOPHIA" called Sophia's mom.
"Yes mom" "My darling daughter come and help mom."
"Mom I've told you to stop doing all this things, I can help or Tracy can help to, remember what the Doctor said. Sophia complained to her mom.
"I know dear, but you know i can't stop being idle. Anyways forget about me, how is your Boyfriend" said Sophia's mom.
"He's fine mom" Sophia answered and helped her mom with somethings around the house.
---------SHIFT TO SOPHOMORE YEAR----------
As they entered their sophomore year, things started to change, slowly at first, and then all at once.
Sophia had noticed the subtle shifts in Ethan's behavior since the beginning of the semester. He was distracted during study sessions, his text became fewer and farther between. He'd cancel plans with her at the last minute. At first, Sophia told herself it was nothing to worry about. After all, college was demanding and Ethan was just stressed.
But then came the parties-- the parties where he was no longer just Ethan, her boyfriend, but Ethan, the popular guy surrounded by others. She watched as he flirted with other girls, laughing and leaning in close. At first, she assumed it was all harmless-- Ethan was just friendly, right? He was always the life of the party. But each time it happened, a knot began to form in her stomach.
One evening after one week of barely hearing from Ethan, Sophia decided to surprise him at the campus cafe. she finds him sitting with a group of friends, laughing loudly, his arms draped casually a girl she doesn't recognize.
Sophia decided to confront Ethan.
Sophia: "Ethan, I didn't know you'd be here tonight."
Ethan (startled): "Sophia. Uh, yeah, it was a last minute thing. Just hanging out with friends."
(The girl beside him gives Sophia a once-over smirking as if she knows something Sophia doesn't.)
Sophia (quietly): "We were supposed to have dinner."
Ethan: "You didn't remind me. It's just dinner, we can do it another time.
----- A FIGHT LATER THAT NIGHT ------
Back at Sophia's apartment, she confronts Ethan
Sophia: "You didn't even care that I was standing there, Ethan. Do you know how embarrassing that was for me?"
Ethan: "You're making this a bigger deal than it needs to be. I was just hanging out with friends."
Sophia: "You've been distant for weeks. You cancel on me, you don't text back, and then I see you with some girl I don't even know? Do you even care about us anymore?"
Ethan (sighing): "I care, but you're suffocating me, Sophia. You always need something--texts, time, attention. Maybe I need space."
(He leaves without another word, and Sophia spends the night crying. Despite his coldness, she convinces herself it's just a rough patch and things will get better.)
Despite everything-- his late night with friends, his flirty behavior and his increasing distance. Sophia kept forgiving him. She clung to the hope that the boy she had fallen in love with was still inside, waiting to come back. She had to believe it. After all, he had promised her that they would be together.
But with each passing day, that promise seemed to fade further away, and Sophia began to feel like she was the only one still holding on.
Over the next several months, Ethan's behavior becomes a pattern. He flirt openly at parties, avoid spending time alone with Sophia , and dismisses her concerns whenever she brings them up. Sophia, desperate to hold on to the love they once had, forgives him time and time again, believing in the boy who once promised to bring her the moon.
One day, while working late in the campus architecture studio, Maya, Sophia's best friend and roommate, brings her dinner.
Maya: "You've bee quiet all week. Let me guess-- Ethan?"
Sophia (sighing): He said he needed space. But then I saw him post a picture with that girl again. What's her name again-- Rose."
Maya: "Soph, I love you, but you've got to stop doing this to yourself. He's not the guy you fell in love with anymore. You deserve better."
Sophia: "What if he is? What if I just need to try harder?"
Maya (gently): "And what if he's the one who's not trying? Think about that."
Sophia sits in silence, staring at her unfinished model, the weight of Maya's words sinking in.
The next way Sophia immersed herself reading in the library. On her way going home, it started raining.
The rain fell in heavy sheets, soaking Sophia's thin jacket as she trudged down the dimly lit street. It had been an unusually long day. Hours of study in the library had left her mind drained and her eyes heavy, but her heart was far too restless to think of sleep. She pulled her hood tighter over her head as the wind blew cold, the icy droplets finding their way through the seams of her clothes. The streets were quiet save for the rhythmic patter of rain and the occasional car passing by.
Her thoughts wandered to Ethan-again. It had become a habit lately, a kind of involuntary replay of all the ways their relationship had changed. He had been distant for months, his once affectionate demeanor now replaced by a cold indifference that she couldn't ignore. She had tried to convince herself that things would get better, that the boy she had fallen in love with would come back to her. But deep down, she knew she was clinging to a ghost.
Just as she turned the corner onto a quieter street, the sharp screech of tires sliced through the rain-soaked air. The sound was followed by a deafening crash, metal colliding with something solid. Sophia froze, her heart leaping into her throat. For a moment, she stood paralyzed, the world seeming to hold its breath. Then she saw it-a car, smashed against a lamppost, steam rising from its hood.
Adrenaline surged through her veins as she sprinted toward the wreckage, her boots splashing through puddles. The rain blurred her vision, but she didn't stop. When she reached the car, she could see the damage was worse than she had imagined. The front end was crumpled like a tin can, and one of the windows was shattered, the glass littering the wet pavement.
Peering through the driver's side window, she saw him-a man, slumped over the steering wheel. Blood trickled from a cut on his forehead, blending with the rain that seeped in through the cracked windshield. His breathing was shallow, and his face was pale, his dark hair plastered to his forehead.
"Hey! Are you okay?" Sophia's voice shook as she banged on the window. There was no response. Her hands trembled as she fumbled for her phone, dialing 911.
---
Sophia: "There's been an accident. A car crashed into a lamppost on Elm Street. The driver's hurt-he's unconscious or barely awake. Please send help quickly!"
Dispatcher: "Help is on the way. Stay with the driver if it's safe to do so."
---
Sophia hung up, tossing her phone into her pocket as she tried to open the car door. It was stuck. Panic clawed at her chest, but she forced herself to stay calm. She crouched lower, her face level with the broken window.
"Hey! Can you hear me?" she called again, louder this time.
A faint groan came from the driver. His head shifted slightly, and his eyes fluttered open, glassy and unfocused.
---
Adrian: "I... I think so."
Sophia: "Okay, good. Stay with me. Help is on the way. What's your name?"
Adrian: "Adrian."
Sophia: "Alright, Adrian. Just hang on, okay? You're going to be fine."
---
Her voice wavered, but she did her best to sound reassuring. She reached through the shattered window, her fingers brushing his shoulder. "You're not alone," she said softly, more to steady herself than anything else.
Minutes felt like hours as they waited for help to arrive. Sophia kept talking to him, asking him questions to keep him awake. She learned he had been driving home late after a business meeting, distracted by a phone call that he now regretted answering.
"You shouldn't be talking," she said gently, her eyes scanning his injuries. "Just focus on staying awake."
Adrian gave her a weak smile, though it was barely more than a twitch of his lips. "You're kind," he murmured, his voice faint.
Finally, the wail of sirens pierced the rain-soaked night. Paramedics rushed to the scene, and Sophia stepped back, allowing them to take over. She watched as they carefully extracted Adrian from the wreck, his body limp but still breathing. He winced as they secured him to a stretcher, his gaze flickering toward Sophia.
---
Adrian: "You... you saved me. Thank you."
---
His words were faint, almost lost in the noise of the rain and the paramedics' voices, but they struck Sophia deeply. She nodded, unsure of what to say. Before she could respond, the ambulance doors slammed shut, and Adrian was whisked away into the night.
Sophia stood there for a moment, her clothes soaked and her hands trembling. She hadn't even thought to give her name or ask for his last name. It didn't matter, she told herself. He was safe now, and that was all that mattered.
As she walked back to her dorm, her thoughts swirled. The image of Adrian's pale face, the sound of his faint voice thanking her-it all stayed with her, lingering like an unfinished story. For a brief moment, she had been someone's lifeline, and it felt strangely significant, though she couldn't explain why.
By the time she reached her room, her exhaustion had caught up with her. She collapsed onto her bed, her mind still replaying the events of the night. Despite her best efforts to push it aside, the memory of Adrian's gratitude and the vulnerability in his eyes refused to fade.
Little did she know, that rainy night marked the beginning of a story she hadn't planned for-a story that would intertwine her life with Adrian's in ways she couldn't yet imagine. It wasn't just a chance encounter; it was the start of something that would challenge everything she thought she knew about love, trust, and the courage it took to start over.
Sophia drifted off to sleep, unaware of the role Adrian would come to play in her life and the ways he would teach her to find strength in the most unexpected places.
The sun shone brightly over the campus, a perfect backdrop for what should have been a day of celebration. Graduation day was here at last. Sophia stood amidst a sea of caps and gowns, her heart racing with a mixture of pride and nervous anticipation. This day marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter. She adjusted her gown, brushing invisible specks of dust from her sleeve, and smiled as her friends buzzed around her, taking photos and exchanging hugs.
But something was missing-Ethan.
She had tried to find him earlier, hoping he would be there to support her, to remind her that their future was still something worth fighting for. After all, he'd promised they'd build a life together. She glanced at her phone for the tenth time, checking for any messages. Nothing.
"Where is he?" she muttered under her breath, a frown tugging at her lips.
Her mother, always her biggest cheerleader, had encouraged her to focus on herself. "This is your day, Sophia," she had said that morning over the phone, her voice warm despite her illness. "Don't let anyone steal your joy."
Sophia had smiled at the memory, but now, as the ceremony drew closer, she felt an ache growing in her chest. She needed Ethan to be there, to show her that they still had something worth holding on to.
-----The Discovery -----
Determined to find him, Sophia wandered through the crowded campus, her heels clicking against the pavement. Her heart leaped when she spotted Ethan's familiar figure near the student center, but her steps faltered when she saw he wasn't alone.
A woman stood beside him, laughing as she adjusted the collar of his shirt. The intimacy between them was undeniable. Sophia froze, her stomach twisting as she watched the woman rest a hand on his chest, leaning in closer than anyone who was "just a friend" should.
Sophia's mind raced. Maybe she was misunderstanding. Maybe it wasn't what it looked like. But then Ethan leaned down, his lips brushing against the woman's in a way that shattered every illusion Sophia had clung to.
Her throat tightened, tears stinging her eyes as she approached them, her legs moving before her mind could stop her.
Sophia: "Ethan? What is this?"
Ethan spun around, his face pale. "Sophia! It's... it's not what it looks like."
The other woman smirked, folding her arms across her chest.
Rose: "Oh, come on, Ethan. Stop pretending. She deserves to know."
Sophia's heart felt like it was being ripped apart as the truth hit her like a freight train. This wasn't a one-time mistake. It was a betrayal that had been going on for months-maybe even years.
Sophia: "I gave you everything, Ethan. I forgave you over and over again. And this... this is how you repay me?"
Ethan's eyes darted around, avoiding hers. "You're overreacting. It wasn't serious."
Sophia's breath caught. Overreacting? The audacity of his words lit a fire within her, burning through the heartbreak and replacing it with anger.
Sophia: "Not serious? You've done nothing but throw me away, and I let you. I let you treat me like I didn't matter. But not anymore. I'm done."
Her voice cracked on the last word, but she didn't care. She turned on her heel and walked away, ignoring Ethan's half-hearted protests. Each step felt heavier than the last, but she didn't look back.
She reached a quiet corner of the campus and let herself cry, the weight of the betrayal crashing down on her. She thought of all the times she had forgiven him, all the times she had believed his promises. How could she have been so blind?
--- ETHAN ---
Thank God, she's finally out of my way. I was looking for a way to dispose her. Come to think of it, I actually loved her but things happens right? *sighs*
---- The Phone Call ----
Sophia phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her from her spiraling thoughts. She wiped her tears and answered without looking at the caller ID, assuming it was one of her friends.
"Hello?" she said, her voice thick with emotion.
"Sophia..." It was her aunt's voice, trembling with grief.
Something cold and heavy settled in Sophia's stomach. "What's wrong?"
"It's your mother. She... she passed this morning."
The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Sophia gripped the edge of a nearby bench, her knees threatening to give out.
Sophia: "No... No, that can't be true. I just talked to her. She sounded fine. She was fine."
Her aunt's voice broke. "I'm so sorry, sweetheart. She didn't want to worry you, but the cancer spread faster than anyone expected. She wanted you to enjoy today, to focus on your graduation. She didn't want you to know."
Sophia's heart shattered all over again. Her mother had been her rock, her anchor through every storm. Losing her now, on the same day she had discovered Ethan's betrayal, felt like too much to bear.
She sank onto the bench, tears streaming down her face as she clutched her phone. The pain was overwhelming, suffocating.
For the first time in her life, Sophia felt completely and utterly alone.
---- A Promise to Herself ----
By the time the ceremony started, Sophia had dried her tears and pulled herself together as best she could. She sat through the speeches and applause, her mind numb. Her best friend noticed her moody face and tried consoling her. When her name was called, she walked across the stage in a daze, barely registering the cheers around her.
But as she held her diploma in her hands, something shifted within her. Her mother's words echoed in her mind: "Don't let anyone steal your joy."
Sophia took a deep breath, her grief mingling with a newfound determination. She couldn't change what had happened, but she could choose how she moved forward.
Ethan had betrayed her. Her mother was gone. But she was still here. And she owed it to herself-and to her mother's memory-to find strength in the face of heartbreak.
As she left the ceremony, the applause fading behind her, Sophia made a vow. She would never let anyone make her feel small or insignificant again. She would rebuild the walls Ethan had torn down and protect her heart until she was ready to let it be touched again.
For now, love was out of the question. But courage? Courage was something she could find. And with time, she hoped, it would be enough.
