A Brewing Betrayal

Author: : Ai Huo
Genre: Modern
Daisy' s memorial service was a haze, the thick lily scent a painful echo of my little girl, gone. I stood a hollow shell, while my wife, Casey, seemed eerily calm, almost serene. Then I overheard her chilling confession: she' d authorized an "unproven" treatment that "hastened" our daughter' s death. My blood ran cold. She dismissed Daisy' s complex care as "draining," before reconnecting with her old flame, Ethan Holloway. Days later, she callously planned to convert Daisy's vibrant room into her new home office. I found Ethan lounging in my living room, Casey laughing with him, more animated than I' d seen her in years. "It's my parents' house, Alex!" she snapped when I confronted her, mocking my award-winning brewery as a "hobby." Her family had already frozen our accounts, accusing me of financial mismanagement. Now, Ethan and Casey were trying to steal my revolutionary brewing process-my life's invention, meant for our family's legacy. The betrayal was absolute, desecrating Daisy's memory and everything we built. How could the woman I loved not only hasten our daughter' s end but then brutally disrespect her memory, seemingly conspiring to ruin me? My marriage was shattered, but my spirit was not. I vowed that day to leave the wreckage, launching "Daisy Chain Brews" with my secret patents. This wasn't just for me; it was for Daisy.

Introduction

"It's my parents' house, Alex!" she snapped when I confronted her, mocking my award-winning brewery as a "hobby."

Her family had already frozen our accounts, accusing me of financial mismanagement.

Chapter 1

Daisy's memorial service was a blur of hushed voices and sad eyes.

I stood there, a hollow shell, the scent of lilies thick in the air, just like Daisy used to love.

My little girl, gone.

Casey, my wife, stood a little apart, her expression smooth, almost serene.

Friends came up, squeezed my arm, murmured condolences.

"She's coping differently," one whispered, nodding towards Casey.

Differently. That was one word for it.

Later, the house felt too big, too quiet. I needed to talk to Casey about Daisy's things, the little treasures I couldn't bear to think of anyone else touching.

I found her in the study, on a video call. Her voice was animated, a tone I hadn't heard in months.

"...reconnected with Ethan Holloway," she was saying to someone on screen, Maya, her childhood friend. "He needs support, just went through a tough business deal."

My blood ran cold. Ethan. Her old college flame.

Then Casey's voice dropped, confidential, "And Maya, between us... that specialized clinic in Switzerland for Daisy? I authorized something more aggressive. Unproven. It just... it hastened things."

I leaned against the doorframe, the wood suddenly the only thing holding me up.

"Daisy's care was so draining," Casey continued, her voice flat now. "It complicated everything. My desire to move on. Ethan doesn't need to be burdened with all that, you know?"

The world tilted. Betrayal. Not just me, but Daisy. Our Daisy.

The Thornes, Casey's parents, had already made my life hell, accusing me of mismanaging money.

Money I'd poured into legitimate, experimental treatments for Daisy in the US, treatments Casey had initially agreed to, then conveniently forgot when her parents started questioning the bills. They' d even restricted my access to our joint accounts because of it.

And all along, this was the truth of Daisy's "specialized treatment."

Chapter 2

I waited until the call ended, my heart a stone in my chest.

"Casey," I said, my voice hoarse. "We need to talk about Daisy's room."

She barely looked up from her laptop. "Oh, right. I was thinking of clearing it out this weekend. Make it a home office. I need a change of scenery."

A home office. Where Daisy laughed, played, slept.

My hands clenched. I didn't say anything. I couldn't.

Instead, I went to Daisy's room. Her scent still lingered on her stuffed bear, her bright drawings still taped to the wall.

I carefully packed her most cherished things – her worn copy of "The Velveteen Rabbit," a box of colorful rocks she called her "gems," the little clay bird we made together.

I took them to the small workshop behind my parents' modest house. It was our place, mine and Daisy's. We' d spent hours there, me tinkering with brewing equipment, her drawing or "helping."

When I got back to the Thorne mansion, his car was in the driveway. Ethan Holloway.

He was in the living room, lounging on the sofa, a drink in his hand. Casey was laughing, leaning towards him, more animated than I' d seen her in years.

She was wearing a new dress, something bright. It felt like a slap in the face.

They looked up as I walked in, my face grim.

Casey' s smile faltered for a second. "Alex. You're back."

Ethan just smirked.
