A Blackwood Heiress Bows To No One

Author: : Ken Dahl
Genre: Romance
The Alliance Summit, a high-stakes gathering where powerful families declared their allegiances, hummed with electric tension as I, Aurora Blackwood, stood poised to make the fateful pronouncement that would bind my ancestral legacy to Caleb Vance. It was the day I once proudly, fatally, linked our futures. But I woke not as ash, but with a searing gasp, the phantom flames of my death still scorching my skin, flooding my mind with the chilling memory of Caleb Vance's face – devoid of grief, almost relieved – the very last sight before the Crimson Syndicate consumed my family, our generations-old ranch, and ultimately, me. In that terrifying previous life, Caleb had swallowed Lila Hayes's carefully crafted lies whole, allowing himself to be manipulated into feeding critical intelligence to the Syndicate, which directly paved the way for their brutal attack, culminating in the complete decimation of the Blackwoods and my own agonizing demise. The bitter taste of betrayal choked me, the searing injustice of loving a fool who believed every insidious whisper from a viper like Lila, sacrificing my family' s very existence to appease his warped sense of victimhood. But not this time; reborn with searing clarity and a heart hardened by fire, I would not repeat the past, because today, here and now, a Blackwood Heiress would definitively bow to no one but herself, and Caleb Vance would witness the true cost of his betrayal.

Introduction

Chapter 1

The last thing I saw was Caleb Vance' s face.

It wasn' t twisted with grief for me, for my family.

No, it was a strange, almost relieved expression.

Lila Hayes, the woman he loved, whispered something in his ear.

Then the Crimson Syndicate' s fire consumed everything.

The Blackwood ranch, generations of my family, me.

They said a Blackwood Heiress bows to no one.

In the end, I bowed to death, betrayed by the man I loved.

I woke with a gasp, my lungs burning, the phantom pain of fire still on my skin.

But I wasn' t ash.

My hands, they were smooth, unscarred.

I was in my formal gown, the deep emerald silk that I wore only once.

The air was thick with expensive perfume and unspoken tensions.

The Alliance Summit.

The grand hall of the Capital Building, where powerful families declared allegiances.

This was the day.

The day I, Aurora Blackwood, in my past life, had proudly linked my family' s fate to Caleb Vance.

The day the first nail was hammered into our coffin.

My heart pounded.

I remembered Caleb' s words, cold and distant, after Lila' s supposed "tragedy."

"It's your fault, Rory. Your family's ambition. Lila suffered because of you."

He believed her lies, every single one.

And because of that, he fed information to the Syndicate, paving the way for their attack.

The Blackwoods, decimated. Me, dead.

All because I loved a fool.

No more.

This time, things would be different.

I looked across the polished floor.

The heads of families were assembling.

My father, Patriarch Blackwood, stood tall, his eyes searching for me with a hint of concern.

CEO Vance, Caleb's father, was already glad-handing, desperate for our alliance to save his failing corporation.

And Caleb. He was there, looking impatient, his eyes occasionally flicking towards the entrance where Lila Hayes would soon make her orchestrated, "vulnerable" appearance.

He hadn't seen me yet.

My gaze found Jax Ryder.

Leader of the Ryder Group, our staunchest allies, sometimes rivals, always honorable.

He stood quietly, a pillar of strength, his eyes unexpectedly meeting mine.

There was a flicker of something in them – surprise, then a deep, unreadable emotion.

In my past life, Jax had died trying to avenge me. A fact I learned only in my final, burning moments.

This time, he would live. We would live.

The Master of Ceremonies was stepping forward.

"Esteemed families, welcome to the Alliance Summit. A day for forging bonds, for securing futures!"

He would call my name soon.

I would be expected to walk to the central dais, to announce the Blackwood-Vance union.

My hand instinctively went to the small, ancestral Blackwood dagger secured at my waist, a ceremonial piece used for signing pacts.

This time, it would sign a different name.

Chapter 2

Caleb Vance barely glanced my way as I entered his line of sight.

His attention, as always in those last months of my previous life, was already half-captured by the thought of Lila Hayes.

He probably expected me to be the doting fiancée, eager to please, ready to bind the Blackwood fortune to his crumbling Vance Corporation.

That was the Rory he knew, the Rory he so easily discarded.

A bitter memory surfaced: Jax, in my past life, his face grim, his men falling around him as he fought the Syndicate after my death.

He had known Caleb' s weakness, had tried to warn me in his own quiet way, but I, blinded by love, hadn' t listened.

He died for my mistake.

The MC cleared his throat. "And now, we invite Aurora Blackwood, heiress to the formidable Blackwood family, to declare her family's chosen alliance."

All eyes turned to me.

I saw Caleb smirk, a self-satisfied look, already anticipating his victory.

I walked to the dais, not towards Caleb, but towards Jax Ryder.

I drew the Blackwood ceremonial dagger.

Its obsidian blade gleamed.

"The Blackwood family," I announced, my voice clear and strong, ringing through the silent hall, "chooses to ally with the Ryder Group."

I turned to Jax, holding out the dagger, hilt first. "Jax Ryder, will you sign the Founders' Compact with me, and bind our families in strength and loyalty?"

A collective gasp filled the room.

Caleb' s smirk vanished, replaced by stunned disbelief.

Jax looked at me, his usually stoic face showing a rare crack of astonishment.

Then, a slow, almost imperceptible nod. He stepped forward.

Before he could take the dagger, Caleb found his voice.

"What is this, Rory? Some kind of joke?" he blustered, stepping forward. "Our families agreed! The Vance-Blackwood alliance is set!"

Lila Hayes chose that moment to appear, looking pale and artless, rushing to Caleb' s side. "Oh, Caleb, what' s happening?"

Caleb put a protective arm around her. "It' s nothing, Lila. Just Rory being... difficult."

He turned back to the assembled families. "I, Caleb Vance, declare that any talk of a forced alliance with Aurora Blackwood is void! My heart, my commitment, is solely to Miss Lila Hayes!"

He pulled Lila closer, as if daring anyone to challenge him.

"She is the one I will marry, the one I will stand by!"

He was trying to humiliate me, to paint me as the spurned woman.

He had no idea he was playing right into my hands.

Lila looked up at him, eyes shining with unshed tears. "Oh, Caleb," she whispered, loud enough for those nearby to hear.

CEO Vance' s face was a mask of fury. "Caleb, you fool!" he hissed, his voice low but vibrating with rage.

My father, however, watched me with a thoughtful expression, a hint of pride in his eyes.

I ignored Caleb' s outburst.

I looked at Jax, my gaze steady. "Jax?"

He took the dagger from my hand, his fingers brushing mine. A small shock, like static electricity, passed between us.

Together, we walked to the ancient parchment of the Founders' Compact, a document rarely invoked, reserved for the most solemn of pacts.

I signed my name, Aurora Blackwood, with a flourish.

Jax Ryder signed his, his script firm and unwavering.

Done.

Caleb stared, aghast. Then, a strange look of triumph flickered across his face. He probably thought he was finally free of me, free to pursue his "true love" without Blackwood interference.

He beamed at Lila. "See? It all worked out."

Lila snuggled closer. "You're so brave, Caleb."

CEO Vance looked like he was about to have an aneurysm. "You have ruined us, boy!" he seethed at Caleb, no longer bothering to keep his voice down.
