After a long while, Lachlan went back to the hospital room and saw Nicola staring blankly out the window in the bed wearily.
Her swollen face and her delicate beauty made her appear unusually fragile.
Lachlan's heart seemed to be pieced, as he felt more guilty for having let Cassie slap her.
He paused and then walked over to sit by the bed. He said while holding her hand, "Nicola, are you still upset that I didn't save you in time? I swear that I'll always be there to protect. I won't let it happen again in the future."
Nicola looked at his hand, but she remembered he had used his hand to eagerly caress Cassie.
He pulled her hand away coldly and closed her eyes. She had no response to his words.
There was no future anymore.
The next day, Nicola returned home. Lachlan set aside his work to accompany her and eagerly trailed after her.
He anxiously watched her discard many items that held memories of their past. She even packed her belongings in a large suitcase.
She seemed to be leaving him decisively.
Lachlan grew restless.
He pointed to those items Nicola had thrown into the trash and said with a pale face, "These are all gifts we exchanged before. Why are you throwing them away?"
Before Nicola could respond, he pointed at her suitcase and asked anxiously, "And there is the suitcase. Nicola, where are you going?"
Nicola replied offhandedly, "Things haven't been going well with me lately. I'm traveling for a couple of days."
Lachlan looked carefully at her expression, but Nicola met his gaze without flinching.
He couldn't see anything on her face and was relieved. He said with a smile, "It sounds good. It's been ages since we last traveled together."
Nicola hadn't yet had the chance to refuse when his phone suddenly rang.
Lachlan glanced at it, and his face subtly changed. He instinctively hid it before stepping aside to answer the call.
Unfortunately for him, Nicola had already seen Cassie's name on the screen.
Just then, a servant handed Nicola a document. "Mrs. Begum, someone just delivered this for you."
Nicola opened it and saw the divorce certificates for her and Lachlan, respectively.
At the same time, her phone vibrated with a flight ticket purchase notification and a message from Jerold.
"Nicola, congratulations. You are single now. Welcome home."
Nicola's eyes reddened as she put the divorce certificates into her purse.
Lachlan finished his call and turned to Nicola. He caught only a glimpse of the corner of the divorce certificate before it was put away.
He was uneasy for no reason and leaned in to ask, "What was that?"
Nicola didn't answer. Instead, she changed the subject. "Who called you?"
Lachlan's eyes flickered for a moment as he felt a bit guilty. "Sorry, honey. There's something I need to handle in the company. I can't leave, so we'll have to travel together some other time."
Nicola had anticipated that and replied calmly, "That's fine."
Since Lachlan didn't travel with her, he personally drove her to the airport.
Along the way, he frequently picked up his phone to reply to messages with a faint smile lingering on his lips.
He was likely already imagining how he would enjoy his time with Cassie when Nicola was away.
Nicola's eyes grew cold. While he was distracted, she placed his divorce certificate in the glove box.
At the airport, Lachlan reached out to embrace her. He said gently, "Honey, don't stay away too long. I'll be waiting for you to come back."
Nicola felt the familiar embrace, and her eyes reddened slightly.
"Lachlan, I've got a gift for you. It's in the glove box. Make sure you check it." With that, she gave him a deep look and turned away without hesitation.
Lachlan stood there and watched her until she disappeared from sight. Then he returned to his car.
He was joyful and was about to reach for the glove box when he suddenly noticed a thin piece of paper that had fallen onto the passenger seat.
He raised his eyebrows and picked it up. When he read the words "Six weeks pregnant," his eyes widened in shock and delight. "Nicola is pregnant? I'm going to be a dad!"
His heart was overflowing with joy. But before he could fully process it, his phone rang urgently.
As soon as he picked it up, he heard the anxious voice of his assistant, Richard Norris. "Mr. Begum, there's a problem. You need to come to the office right now. The video of you and Cassie has been leaked when you were intimate. It is the number one trending topic. Now the company account is being bombarded with negative comments, and many business partners are rushing to terminate their contracts with us. We're doomed."
