Rosalyn smiled faintly and replied to the message. "Okay."
Tomorrow, she would be free of this house and this man forever.
The next morning, Rosalyn got up early to head to the city hall.
As she passed Saul's bedroom on her way downstairs, she froze.
Muffled groans came from inside, the sound of Saul's exertion unmistakable.
A woman's nails scratched across his back, her breathy moans filling the air.
Rosalyn's blood ran cold. Nausea churned in her stomach.
In a daze, she caught a glimpse of a tattoo on Saul's private area-a string of text.
It was Norene's name.
Rosalyn covered her mouth and retched.
Saul loved Norene so much he had etched her name there, as proof of his devotion.
After a long moment, she gathered the courage to push open the door.
Her face was ashen, her voice icy. "You've kept Margaret locked up for three days. That's enough punishment. Can you let her go now?"
Seeing Rosalyn, Saul quickly pulled the blanket over himself and Norene.
He turned, ready to snap, but the disappointment in her eyes made his chest tighten uncomfortably.
His intended rebuke softened. "Later. I'll take you this afternoon."
"Okay," Rosalyn said, leaving without another word.
Her indifference killed Saul's mood. He got up and went to the bathroom to shower.
By two in the afternoon, Saul kept his word and took Rosalyn to the asylum to retrieve Margaret.
But when they arrived, they learned Margaret had been locked in a freezer for resisting the staff.
Rosalyn's mother had passed away early, and she had always seen Margaret as a surrogate mother.
Hearing this, Rosalyn rushed to the freezer to save her.
Margaret, frail with age, was barely conscious, her condition dire.
Rosalyn clenched her fists, hoisting Margaret onto her back. "Margaret, hold on. I'm getting you out. We're going home."
Her small frame struggled to drag Margaret forward, but at the freezer's door, she found the key was broken.
They were trapped.
With no phone signal, Rosalyn pounded on the iron door, crying for help. "Is anyone there? Please, save us!"
Upstairs, Saul noticed Rosalyn hadn't returned and went to investigate.
At the door, he faintly heard her cries for help.
As he started toward the freezer, Norene suddenly collapsed behind him, her voice frail. "Saul, I twisted my ankle."
Saul frowned. He thought he heard Rosalyn's pleas.
But Norene's eyes welled up. "Saul, Rosalyn's a grown woman. She'll be fine. My ankle hurts so much. Can you take me to the hospital?"
Saul glanced toward the freezer, then at Norene.
Finally, he scooped Norene up and left.
The asylum had plenty of staff. If Rosalyn was in trouble, someone would help her.
But Norene only had him.
...
When Rosalyn woke again, she was in a hospital.
Saul sat nearby, visibly relieved to see her awake. "Rosalyn, I'm sorry. Norene fell, and she was right there. I had to help her first."
He had never bothered to explain himself before.
But Rosalyn no longer cared to hear it.
Her voice was flat. "It's fine. I'm used to it."
Saul felt a pang in his chest.
He expected her to lash out, but her calm unnerved him.
For once, he softened. "This was my fault. I'll be more careful next time."
Rosalyn didn't bother responding.
She scoffed inwardly. There wouldn't be a next time. She wouldn't give him another chance to hurt her.
Due to her condition, Rosalyn stayed in the hospital for a few days. She sent Margaret abroad to recover.
On the day she was discharged and returned to the villa to pack, she overheard Norene talking with her brother at the entrance. Norene's brother lounged arrogantly. "Why haven't you left yet? Don't tell me you actually fell for that loser Saul?"
Norene sneered. "Of course not. Saul's just one of my many admirers with decent prospects. I only bothered with him because he's a lawyer and useful. Otherwise, I wouldn't give him a second glance. He's just the Wright family's adopted son. I only paid attention to him to climb their social ladder. Who knew he'd fall out with them? With my tens of millions, Saul's beneath me now. Besides, he only loves me because he thinks I saved him. He doesn't know it was actually Rosalyn. I just took credit."
Rosalyn, standing outside, let out a bitter laugh.
She had recorded every word.
She couldn't wait to see Saul's reaction when he learned he was just a pawn.
She had loved him fiercely, but he dismissed her.
Now, the woman he adored was a liar using him.
Rosalyn turned and left.
She placed the divorce certificate she had picked up from the city hall and the recording pen in a safe.
It was her final gift to him.
With that, Rosalyn grabbed her suitcase and walked out of the villa.
On the way to the airport, she blocked and deleted Saul from her phone, yanked out the SIM card, and tossed it out the window.
Even her cherished wedding ring went with it.
This time, she erased everything tied to Saul completely.
