Kylee was unconscious for the entire night and only woke up at noon the next day.
When she slowly opened her eyes, she saw Kenney gazing at her.
He was sprawled at the bedside, bleary-eyed. He must have stayed there to look after her all night.
Seeing her awake, he gently touched her cheek. "Kylee, you're finally awake."
His voice was exceptionally tender, and his eyes brimmed with affection as he looked at Kylee.
She felt a bit dazed and tried to sit up. But she winced as the needle in her hand tugged painfully. She gritted her teeth.
"Kylee, lie down. The doctor said you have low blood sugar and need to rest for a few days."
Kylee didn't move again. She just lay there motionless.
Kenney sat beside her and kissed her forehead. "You really are my lucky charm to bring me good luck. My legs have recovered now. Kylee, I've realized how exhausting it is to care for a patient. You've worked so hard, honey."
Indeed, Kylee gave a cold laugh inside.
Kenney always saw her as a pampered woman from a rich family who was capricious.
Yet during the month following his car accident, she took care of him day and night.
He had looked at her so tenderly back then as well.
"But Kylee... think about it from another perspective. Ruth's husband has passed away, and she has stayed with me for so long. Her life must be tough."
Kylee froze, feeling a chill in her heart.
Now she realized that he was so gentle to her because of Ruth.
Kylee raised her eyes, and her eyes were blurred. "I have no responsibility for her pain."
"But Kylee, you should be more understanding of her," Kenney pressed on relentlessly. "The servant said she hit you. I hope you can forgive her."
Looking at Kenney, Kylee finally understood how deeply he loved Ruth.
So he couldn't bear to see Ruth suffer even the slightest grievance.
Fortunately, the doctor called him away for a talk, so Kylee didn't cry in his presence.
Just as she wiped away her tears, the door was open again.
She thought Kenney had returned, so she turned her back to the door and didn't want to see him.
Suddenly, a sharp voice rang out as Ruth rushed over and grabbed her throat fiercely. "You wretch! How dare you be so cold to me? Don't think he cares about you just because he stays in your ward."
Kylee coughed as Ruth's nails dug into her flesh.
Ruth's face twisted, and she let out a weird laugh. "Go and die! After you're gone, Kenney will be all mine."
Ruth didn't deny that she was deeply envious of Kylee.
After all, she truly held Kenney's heart.
But she had to suppress her feelings because she had married his elder brother.
Why couldn't she be with Kenney openly?
Just as Kylee was about to suffocate, she caught a glimpse of Kenney entering the room.
He rushed over and pulled Ruth away from behind so Kylee could finally gasp for air.
Ironically, Kenney first checked Ruth thoroughly, even inspecting her hands. "Does it hurt?"
After Ruth shook her head, he breathed a sigh of relief.
Suddenly, Kenney seemed to remember something and turned to check on Kylee. "Kylee, are you... alright?"
He could clearly see the finger marks on Kylee's neck.
Kylee was unable to speak as she was in too much pain.
She reached disheveledly and grabbed her phone from the bedside. Kenney asked her what she was doing.
She replied hoarsely, "I'm reporting her. She assaulted me."
Upon hearing this, Ruth looked at Kenney with reddened eyes, and tears brimmed in her eyes.
Kenney felt sorry for Ruth and quickly snatched the phone away from Kylee. "Kylee, Ruth acted out of intense emotion. Can't you be a bit more forgiving? Even though you're in pain, she had her nails done, and they got damaged because she grabbed your throat."
