Chapter 4

It was the family sports day.

Greg was driving towards the kindergarten.

As he stopped at a red light, his phone rang.

"Greg, I've had a car accident. I'm so scared..." Rena's voice trembled with sobs over the phone. "I'm feeling dizzy, Greg. Please come quickly."

He could hear the ambulance sirens in the background.

Greg glanced at the kindergarten just a hundred meters away, hesitated for a few seconds, then turned the steering wheel around. "Don't worry. I'll be there soon!"

At the kindergarten, Lottie was bouncing around happily. She told everyone that her dad would be there today. "I'm going to show all my classmates that my dad is the most handsome in the world."

Before long, the playground was bustling with parents and children. Lottie stood on tiptoe and scanned the crowd. "Mom, why isn't Dad here yet?"

"Maybe he's stuck in traffic," Eileen replied, glancing at the time with a hint of unease.

The host began introducing the rules of the sports day through the microphone.

"Lottie, where's your dad?" a curious kid asked Lottie.

She turned to look at the entrance, but no one showed up. "He's... he's coming soon."

A boy sneered, "Lottie, are you lying? You don't even have a dad."

"I do have a dad!" Lottie's eyes reddened with frustration. "My dad works really hard. He's a big boss."

"Then why isn't he here? My dad is busy too, but he says spending time with me is more important than his work."

"Exactly, my dad even took a day off yesterday," another kid chimed in.

The kids talked warmly. They looked at Lottie in a way that said she was a liar.

Lottie felt increasingly upset. She finally covered her eyes and ran away from the group.

"Lottie!" Eileen had just picked up some props from the teacher when she saw Lottie running away in tears. Eileen hurried after her.

Lottie was running too fast and slipped, falling heavily to the ground.

Her knee scraped against the rough surface and immediately bled.

"Ouch, it hurts..." She lay on the ground and cried loudly.

Eileen felt sorry for Lottie and quickly picked up the latter. "Let me get you to the hospital quickly, sweetheart."

"I don't want to go to the hospital. I want to wait for Dad!" Lottie struggled in Eileen's arms. "Dad promised he would come to be with me."

Looking at the bleeding wound on Lottie's knee, Eileen didn't have time to comfort Lottie and took her straight to the hospital.

At the hospital, a doctor was treating Lottie's wound.

Eileen went to pay the bill and saw Greg when she passed the emergency room.

He was bending over and checking on Rena, lying on a hospital bed. His face was full of concern.

"Greg, my head is still spinning." Rena weakly grasped his hand.

Greg gently patted her hand. "Don't be afraid. I'm here."

He was so tender, which was starkly contrasted with his neglect of Lottie.

When Greg stepped out, Eileen could no longer hold back her emotions and confronted him. "Greg, Lottie was waiting for you. Why did you break your promise?"

Greg looked surprised to see Eileen. "Rena had a car accident. It was urgent. I'll make it up to Lottie next time."

Next time? He always said that.

Eileen had just seen that Rena didn't have a single visible injury.

How was it urgent?

"How can you keep lying to Lottie? She's just a little girl."

Greg's expression turned cold. "Miss Irene Shane, don't forget your place. We're only in a fake marriage for a month, and Lottie isn't my daughter. I would give you ten million to buy your blood. But you insisted on marrying me. Don't act like I owe you anything."

His words were like knives, stabbing into Eileen's heart fiercely.

She remembered what had happened five years ago in a hospital.

That time, Greg had been in an accident. She had cooked for him and overheard his conversation with a friend outside the ward.

"Greg, Rena has gone abroad. Why haven't you broken up with Eileen yet?"

"Just wait. Rena comes back once a month."

"Luca, are you stupid? Why would Greg really date that chubby woman? Her only role is to provoke Rena."

"So that's how it is. When Rena sees that Greg has a girlfriend, she will return more often."

If Eileen hadn't slept with Greg, she might have thought she was just a pawn.

But Greg had slept with her for three months. Except when she was on her period, they had sex every night.

She was fat. If he didn't truly love her, why would he touch her? He was incredibly handsome and could easily have another woman.

Eileen believed that she had become Greg's real girlfriend.

But it turned out that she was the only one naive enough to think so.

Everyone around Greg knew he always considered her a tool.

"Seven years passed. Eileen, how can you still be so foolish? How can you still believe Greg's lies?

"Mr. Burton, you keep breaking your promises. Our agreement is void."
