Chapter 9 THE RECKONING

The storm hit the next morning. Zara barely slept. She'd spent the night piecing together everything Ada had access to - every file, every call, every secret. The betrayal scorched deeper than gossip blogs or public backlash. It was personal. By 8 AM, hashtags were trending. *#FakeFiancéeScam* *#ZaraEzediLied* *#TariDeservesBetter* Her phone wouldn't stop buzzing. Brands pulled out of collaborations. One of her bridal clients backed out with a vague email: *"Given the current controversy..."* Mimi had called twice to say a few journalists were camped outside the studio.

Zara felt like she was unraveling. But she also knew one thing: She wouldn't let them write her ending. She was going to do that herself. - By 10 AM, she walked into her studio dressed in black. Minimal makeup. Hair pulled back in a sleek bun. Calm expression masking the fire inside. Mimi met her at the door, eyes wide. "You look like you're about to go to war." "I am." "She's here," Mimi whispered. Zara's brow rose. "Ada." Zara's stomach turned, but she nodded. "Good." She stepped into the main office and found Ada sitting casually on the couch, legs crossed, sipping coffee like she hadn't just set fire to Zara's entire life. "Ada," Zara said evenly. "Z," Ada replied with a smile. "You look... tired." "I should," Zara replied. "You've been busy." Ada gave a little shrug. "It's not personal. It's just business. I warned you not to leave me behind when you got the Tari deal." Zara felt her hands curl into fists. "So that's what this is? Revenge?" Ada stood. "You used to be smarter than this. You let a man get in your head and forgot the game." Zara stepped closer. "I *built this from nothing. I fought for every inch. And you? You couldn't build, so you destroyed." Ada's smirk faded. "You always had the spotlight," she muttered. "I was always second. You were the face, the dream, the one Tari picked. I just wanted my cut." Zara stared at her for a long moment. "Get out. And don't ever speak my name again." Ada scoffed. "You think anyone will believe you now? Your little love story is unraveling-" Zara stepped forward, eyes cold. "I'd rather fall with the truth than stand on your kind of lies." - An hour later, Zara did what she hadn't planned to do before. She went live on Instagram. No filters. No script. Just her. The video lit up in seconds. "Hi. My name is Zara Ezedi. And yes - the contract you've seen is real." Pause. "But what's also real... is me." She took a breath. "I started this business from a sewing machine in my dorm room. I've worked three jobs, skipped meals, sacrificed everything just to be here. When Tari Amadi proposed a fake engagement to save his company image and protect my brand, we both agreed - strictly business." She looked directly into the camera. "But sometimes life doesn't follow contracts. Sometimes... you fall." Another breath. "I didn't scam anyone. I didn't manipulate. And I didn't ask to be betrayed by someone I called a friend." Her voice faltered, just a little. Then steadied. "So believe what you want. But I know my truth. And I'll keep showing up for the ones who believe it too." She ended the live. And for the first time in days... she didn't feel small. - Across the city, Tari watched the entire video in silence. He didn't care about the contract. Not anymore. What mattered was the woman in that video - the one who stood tall even when the world tried to bury her. He picked up his phone. "Get a press team. I'm going on record."

Tari knew exactly where to go. By 2:30 PM, he sat in the studio of *The Daily Plug*, the most-watched pop culture stream in Lagos. The same one that had first run the headline calling him a "victim of Zara's business game." He didn't wait for the interview to start. "I'm here to clear something up," he said directly to the host, camera already rolling. The host blinked. "You mean the engagement clause?" "Yes. It was real. We both signed it. But what happened after that wasn't fake." He adjusted the mic, gaze steady. "What Zara built is hers. Her success is hers. She didn't scam anyone. She saved my company's biggest deal when I needed a fix. I asked *her* for help. And she's the one being dragged now?" The host, clearly surprised, said, "So you're saying... she wasn't using you?" Tari's voice was calm but sharp. "No. She was *helping* me. And along the way, I caught real feelings for her. That wasn't part of the contract." There was a pause. "Do you still have feelings for her?" Tari stared into the camera. "Yes." Social media lit up immediately. *"Tari defending Zara??"* *"Wait... did he just say he's in love with her???"* *"Nah this love story just got resurrected from the dead."Zara watched the clip on mute at first. But then she turned the sound on. And when she heard him say those words - *"I caught real feelings for her"* she covered her mouth and sat down slowly. Mimi was across from her, blinking. "Girl... that man just fought for you in public." Zara whispered, "He didn't have to. But he did." And suddenly, all the walls she'd built didn't feel so necessary anymore. Because the realest love was never about just saying it. It was about showing up when it mattered. Later that evening, Zara stood backstage at a women-in-business summit she'd been scheduled to speak at weeks ago. The organizers had offered to cancel due to the controversy, but she insisted on attending. Not to clear her name. To remind herself that she still belonged in rooms like this. She wore a cream blazer and soft gold jewelry - elegance with an edge. Her walk was steady, but her fingers trembled slightly as she gripped her cue cards. Mimi leaned over and whispered, "You've got this." Zara nodded and stepped onto the stage. The applause was hesitant at first, then genuine. Her eyes scanned the crowd. Mostly women. Mostly dreamers like she had been - before contracts and fake love and betrayal. She began. "I was recently called a liar. A scammer. A woman who used love to build a brand. But if I've learned anything these past few days, it's that people will believe what's loud, not what's true." She paused. "My truth? I started with thread and vision. And I've never used anyone to climb. I've only survived." The crowd was silent now - listening. "And as for love..." she said softly, "sometimes, it starts as fiction. And still turns into something painfully real."Just then, a voice cut through the hall. "Well said." Gasps followed. Zara turned. Tari stood at the back of the room, walking toward the stage - dressed in a navy suit, confident, quiet. He climbed the steps and took the mic from the side stand. "I wasn't invited to speak," he said, earning a few chuckles. "But I need to say this - not as a CEO. Not as the man in the headline. But as the guy who fell in love with a woman strong enough to rebuild even when the world tried to burn her down." He turned to Zara, eyes steady. "I don't care about the clause anymore. I don't care what people think. I care about you." Then he reached into his inner jacket pocket - and pulled out a folded sheet of paper. Their original fake engagement contract. In front of everyone, he tore it in half. "Let's build something real." The room erupted. But all Zara could hear was her heartbeat. She took the mic, smiled through glossy eyes, and said, "Fine. But this time, *no clauses*."
