Chapter 1 BETRAYAL

ISABELLE's POV

The timer beeped, signaling that my cake was done. I took it out of the oven, letting the golden-brown beauty

cool on the rack. A smile spread across my face as I gazed at my handiwork. Today marks one year since I and Roger got married and I couldn't wait to celebrate our anniversary together.

I glanced at the wall clock, it was already 5 PM. Roger will soon be on his way home which means I need to quickly finish up with the cake so I can shower and get dressed for him.

I sighed a sigh of relief after I finished with the icing. I removed my apron in a swift and hurriedly made my way to the stairs taking two at a time with my feet barely in contact with each step as I bound upward. I got to the room, took off my clothes, and went straight to the bathroom to shower.

I looked at all the dresses hung in my closet but couldn't decide what to wear. I pushed aside the hangers one by one before stumbling on the red fitted dress Roger bought me on my birthday. With a wide grin on my face, I sighed, this is perfect I thought to myself.

I checked my phone to find out how much time I had left, 6: 30 PM. I screamed at myself. I sat in front of my makeover mirror as I applied a little makeup on my face. I rounded up everything with a mild pink blush on my cheeks and went on with my setting spray. Perfect, I winked at myself.

After styling my hair, I quickly put on my dress, pairing it with a black-colored heel. I checked myself out in the mirror, and a feeling of uncertainty engulfed me. I hope he likes how I look. I drafted a short text to Roger saying I can't wait to see him. I waited for a few minutes but didn't get any reply back. He must be busy.

I made my way downstairs, setting the table and lining up different dishes I had prepared. I took a glimpse of the clock, 8 PM. What is taking him so long to come back? I checked my phone to see if he had sent me a message but didn't see anything from him.

Roger was the best decision I ever made, after losing my parents on my 18th birthday, and my only uncle Wilbur 5 years after my parents' death, Roger has always been there for me. I love him so much and I know he loves me as much as I do. Uncle Wilbur was against my relationship with Roger, the reason being that he didn't think he could trust Roger with me. But I couldn't care less, what matters is that I love him and want to be with him.

I jolted up at the sound of the alarm ringing, I had fallen asleep while waiting for Roger. I got anxious because Roger had never been late before. I know he started staying out late because of work sometimes, but he should have made our anniversary an exception.

I called him several times but he wouldn't pick up, and a cold shiver ran through my spine. Negative thoughts began to fill my head. What if something bad had happened to him on his way home? I clenched my fist as I went out and boarded a taxi to his office. While on my way to his office, I kept calling and he still wasn't picking up. My heart raced with so much intensity that this had never happened before.

I got to his office building and headed straight to his office but he wasn't there. I ran a hand through my hair confused about what to do next. Immediately I remembered Roger had a room in the office building where he took naps in between office hours.

I gathered myself together and went to check on him there. I paused at the entrance of the room as I heard moaning sounds coming from the room. I stood there hoping it was someone else and not Roger. I opened the door and to my surprise was Roger having sex with his secretary Sophia.

Despair came crashing, I stood there for a few seconds and they didn't even notice me. Tears filled up my eyes as I quickly sniffed trying to hold them from falling. Roger noticed me but couldn't care less as he continued with his show of affection and lust for his secretary.

I went back home broken and shattered from what I had seen. I prayed it was all a nightmare that would disappear once I woke up. I forced myself to sleep thinking I was hallucinating.

It was morning and I could still recall everything that happened last night, it wasn't a dream, everything happened right in my face. I cried my eyes out of pain and bitterness but it wasn't enough. I needed an explanation for all these.

My phone beeped and it was a text from Roger saying I should come downstairs. I needed answers so I did as he said. While Stepping down, I could feel the coldness around him, he glared at me and all I could see was hatred for me in his eyes. He rolled his eyes at me and glanced at the document in his hand.

What I couldn't understand was the fact that Roger has always been a sweet, loving, and caring person. He adored me, he did everything to make me happy. How did all that disappear and be replaced with this level of detestation towards me.

I thought I wanted answers, but seeing him just made me realize how much I loved him and how I didn't want to lose him to another woman. I just stood there staring at him. "You sent for me," my weak voice managed to break the silence. I was ready to overlook what had happened and start all over with him as long as he promised to stay with me.

He looked at me and handed me the document, " I want a divorce," his cold words cut through me. I froze at his words as I stared at him intensely. " Don't look at me that way Isabelle, you should have seen this coming. "

He didn't regard me at all, he had no respect for me or our relationship. "You want a divorce? After everything we've been through? After transferring all my parents' properties and assets to you, do you now want a divorce? What about me? What is going to happen to me? What will I gain in return?"

" Oh please shut it Isabelle, I never forced you to do any of the things you did. You did everything because you loved me or should I say because you were foolish." He said sharply.

I blinked rapidly trying to control the tears that had filled my eyes as I stride towards him holding his hands. " Listen, baby, I know I haven't been the best wife for you, but I promise if you give me one more chance I will change, please Roger."

He clenched his jaw and widened his eyes at me. " Another chance? You should have been a better wife from the beginning, Isabelle. Don't you see what is happening? Everyone in your life keeps disappearing. Your parents first, second your uncle Wilbur, I don't want to lose my life before I make any decisions to leave you."

I shook at his words and went back supported by shaky knees, never have I felt so heartbroken in my entire life. Even my parents' death wasn't as painful as this. I stride towards him gripping him on his shirt, " I didn't kill my parents or my Uncle Wilbur, How could you do this to me?" I cried bitterly.

He loses himself from my grip and slices his hands on my cheeks as I fall to the ground. " You crazy bitch," he snapped as he bent down gripping my chin " I should have known you were this wild, you know I can punish you for this act, but I won't do that to you, just sign the document and leave in peace. "

I felt a wave of apprehension wash over me as I felt the burn from the slap, and I shivered. I clenched my clothes trying to breathe properly. Roger stood up arranging his collar as he walked away. He halted at his track and turned towards me. " Hope you enjoyed what you saw last night? That was the best sex I have ever had, something you can never give me." He smirked and walked away.

I watched him as he walked out without looking back, divorcing me with nowhere to go and nothing to my name. I wailed bitterly wishing I had listened to my Uncle Wilbur when he told me never to let anyone know what my parents had left me. I covered my face with my hands as I continued crying.

That was the biggest mistake I ever made.
