Chapter 5 Making Moves

The room was suffocating. I hadn't realized how much the silence had become a weight on my chest until I was left alone with my thoughts. The soft, rhythmic sound of the clock ticking in the corner of the room was the only thing keeping me grounded, but even that seemed to mock me with its inevitability.

I lay there for hours, staring at the ceiling, trying to convince myself that I could still fight my way out of this. But the truth was-everything felt out of my control. Lucien had a power over this place, over me, that I couldn't escape. His words echoed in my mind, You survive by doing what I say. You survive by learning to navigate this world.

I turned onto my side, burying my face in the pillow, trying to block it all out. But sleep wouldn't come. My mind kept racing, playing out scenarios where I escaped, where I fought back, where I didn't need Lucien's protection. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't see a way out.

I wasn't sure when I finally drifted into sleep, but the soft knock on the door jerked me awake.

I sat up in bed, my heart hammering in my chest. The clock on the wall read 8:00 AM. I hadn't realized it had gotten so late. I rubbed my face, trying to shake off the fog of sleep. A second knock followed, more insistent this time.

"Aria?" Lucien's voice rang through the door, deep and commanding. "We need to talk."

I hesitated, torn between wanting to avoid him and knowing I had no choice. After a few moments of hesitation, I swung my legs off the bed and stood up. My body ached from the tension of the night, the emotional strain taking a toll.

I opened the door, finding Lucien standing there, his usual confident stance in place. His sharp features were softer than usual, but there was an intensity in his eyes, a quiet urgency that I hadn't seen before.

"You're up," he said, his gaze scanning me briefly before locking on my eyes. "Good. We need to move quickly."

"Move where?" I asked, suspicion lacing my voice. "You just left me here last night to stew in my thoughts and now you want me to just follow you?"

His lips tightened, but he didn't respond to my outburst. Instead, he stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. "We don't have time for questions," he said, his voice calm but firm. "You'll understand soon enough. There's been a development, and it's not something you'll want to miss."

My heart skipped a beat. "A development?"

He nodded, turning his back to me as he walked over to the desk near the far wall. He tapped something on his phone, and a large screen on the wall flickered to life, showing a live feed of what appeared to be a security camera. A cold shiver ran down my spine when I realized it was a shot of the street outside the building.

"I've been keeping an eye on things," Lucien said, his voice soft but carrying an undercurrent of tension. "And I don't like what I'm seeing. We're being watched."

I stepped forward, my curiosity outweighing my fear. "Watched?" I repeated, trying to make sense of it. "By who?"

He met my gaze again, his eyes serious. "I'm not sure yet. But whoever it is, they're close. Very close."

My stomach dropped as I stared at the footage on the screen. A black car was parked on the street, barely noticeable among the other vehicles. But it didn't belong. It was too far from the curb, parked in a way that suggested it had been watching the building for hours. My blood ran cold as I realized what this meant.

"What are we going to do?" I asked, my voice quieter than I intended.

Lucien turned back to me, his expression unreadable. "We're going to find out who they are. And when we do, we'll deal with them."

A sense of unease gripped me. "Deal with them?" I repeated, the words sounding foreign, like they belonged to someone else. Someone who was used to this world. Someone like him.

His lips twisted into a slight smile, though there was no warmth in it. "Yes. This is the world I'm a part of, Aria. A world where danger is a constant, and people like me do whatever it takes to protect what's ours."

I couldn't deny the chill that ran through me at his words. It was clear now-this wasn't just about money or power. Lucien's world was darker than I had ever imagined. There were no rules, no morals. There was only survival.

And I was caught in the middle of it.

I opened my mouth to say something, but the words caught in my throat. There was no point in arguing. Lucien wasn't asking for my permission; he was telling me how it was going to be. And that was it.

"Get ready," he said, turning back to the screen. "We're going out."

I wanted to protest, to demand answers, but I couldn't. I was already in too deep, too far into his world to turn back now.

I walked to the closet, pulling on the clothes I had been given-black jeans, a simple shirt, and boots that made me feel a little more grounded, a little more in control. I glanced back at Lucien, who was still focused on the screen, his jaw tight with concentration.

"You don't have to do this," I said softly, the words coming out before I could stop them. "You don't have to protect me. I can handle it."

Lucien turned to face me, his eyes narrowing. "You don't get it, do you?" he said, his voice low but fierce. "You're not in control anymore. You haven't been for a long time. And the sooner you accept that, the better."

His words stung, more than I wanted to admit. But they were true. I wasn't in control. And even though I hated it, even though every part of me screamed to resist, I knew he was right.

I wasn't sure if I was ready for what was coming, but I didn't have a choice. Lucien had already made the first move. And now, it was my turn to follow.
