Chapter 4 The Crossroads

Izzy was quite scared as the door shut behind her and the car came to a stop. She could feel how dark it was outside, there was barely any movement in the city outside that could penetrate through the stillness between her and Santino. The one figure standing in the shadows just beside the car looked almost like a ghost, his silhouette sharp and imposing under the dim streetlight.

Luca leaned back in his seat but kept his eyes on Izzy. "Don't freak out," he said gently. "He's with me."

Her fingers tightened around the arm of the seat and Izzy hesitated. The air in the car had thickened, it was almost visible how much it was loaded with unspoken tension. She didn't trust Luca, she didn't trust what he was attracting or the DeLucas, yet when she agreed to come here her whole perspective on life just suddenly changed. A part of her has just let go from the world she had known and stepped into something far more dangerous now.

"What's this place?" Izzy asked. Her voice was steady, but the flash of uncertainty that crossed her face wasn't easily concealed.

Luca's smile was sneaky; his face gave no expression. "A safehouse," he replied, his tone low. "Where we can converse without any interference. There's much you need to know."

Izzy opened her mouth to ask something, but a voice cut in before she could even frame her question.

"Mr. DeLuca," the shadowed figure said, stepping into the light. Tall, with a gaunt and chiseled face, his eyes were deeply shadowed as they fixated on Izzy with peculiar intensity. "The room is ready."

Luca nodded, pushing open the door. "Thank you, Marco. We'll be with you in a moment."

Marco nodded curtly and stepped back to allow them to pass. Luca signaled to Izzy to follow him, and though every instinct yelled at her to turn and run, she breathed deeply and left the car.

There was a cold breeze in the evening and it touched her through the light dress that she was wearing; somehow, they were walking to the building and she heard the clicking sound of her heels on the concrete which felt like very loud music. Santino went ahead, his ever present proximity was like a shadow which she couldn't wash away, still, he couldn't help but notice that he seamlessly fit in the all-encompassing blackness. He wasn't just a man; he was an embodiment of power, control and something far darker.

As they entered the building, the door thudded shut behind them. Immediately, Izzy noticed the silence. That air was thick with a tension it could only have in places where critical choices were made-where lives were valued like money.

Santino led her down a long corridor, where the fluorescent light kept up a low buzzing hum while casting an almost clinical glow on the walls. "This is where business occurs," he said, his tone now softer, almost reflective. "Where we guarantee the survival of the DeLuca family."

How to answer that was not something Izzy was aware of. She knew since always that her family was part of the same dangerous world but she never saw it like this; she never had a cold and unfeeling space that seemed to swallow them whole. It felt like the transition into another realm, where morality was a place left at the doorstep.

They finally reached a door at the end of the hall, and Santino turned to her with a trace of something ineffable in his eyes.

"I know you must be feeling overloaded with information," he said, almost gently. "But I want to make sure that you understand the reasons for it. Izzy, you should realize one thing – this is not about us only. It is about survival. Families that we come from have been fighting each other for years and if that will continue all of us will lose you brother... he does not see it yet. However, you can, right?"

Izzy swallowed hard, her throat tight with a kind of emotion she couldn't quite place. She had always believed in the principles her family had instilled in her: that loyalty to the Moretti name was the most important thing, that they were the good guys in a world filled with darkness. But Santino was right about one thing: Giovanni didn't see the whole picture. And neither did she - until now.

"I think I understand what you're saying," she said, with her voice giving away more than she wanted. "However, that does not mean that you can win me over. The DeLucas have caused so much pain to my family. I just can't disregard that."

Santino's gaze softened, but there was precision in his words when he spoke again. "I'm not asking you to forget, Izzy. I'm asking you to think. To see the bigger picture."

He opened the door in front of them. Izzy stepped into the poorly lit room, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. The room was sparsely furnished with a few chairs around a table and somehow managed to exude starkness, as if nothing housed here was meant for anything but serviceable purpose; not even comfort.

"Sit," Santino said, pointing to one of the chairs. "It won't take more than a few minutes."

With clenched hands she sat down opposite to him. She could not calm her thoughts and they kept racing. Whatever he said only made the confusion deeper, only added to the uncertainty she had already felt since that first glance they had shared at the gala. Her heart still raced too much whenever he was near and the pull of his gaze did not allow her to think straight.

Santino slightly leaned forward, his expression becoming serious. "You wonder why I insist so much on meeting with you. It's a very simple answer." He paused and carefully watched her. "The wheels are already in motion for your family to fall. Giovanni doesn't want to see it, but it's the truth. The Morettis are losing their hold on this city, and if they don't make amends with the DeLucas, they will fall further."

Izzy's gut twisted, but she wouldn't give in to weakness. "You think that's going to change anything I do?"

Santino didn't flinch. "I think you can prevent it. You've always been more intelligent than Giovanni, and better aware of your surroundings. You see how things are changing. If you aid me, I can assist your family. We can together keep this city on its feet and make sure both our families live on."

Izzy's mind raced, and the gravity of his words sank in. The DeLucas had always been the enemies, the family she had grown up hating. But here was Santino offering her an out from the war, a chance to heal what had been broken. Could she trust him? Or was this the only way to save her family from being wiped out forever?

But the truth clawed at her heart. She didn't trust Santino....she couldn't. There was something too dangerous about him, something that made her blood run cold. He was offering her power, but at what cost?

"You ask me to disavow everything I know," Izzy said, her voice low but resolute. "Everything I've ever stood for."

Santino's eyes softened for a second, but his voice was still hard. "No, Izzy. I want you to save your family before it's too late."

The door to the room swung open and stepped a man whose silhouette blocked the light from the hallway. Santino's expression hardened and he got to his feet, his body instantly taking up an assertive posture.

"Everything alright?" the man asked, his voice cold but polite.

Santino's eyes flicked to Izzy, his expression unreadable. "It will be."

Izzy's heart raced again, but the silence of the room was heavy with what hadn't been spoken. It wasn't over. It had only just begun.

And she couldn't tell if she was even ready for what was coming.
