Chapter 4 DISMISSAL LETTER

Chapter 4

Isla POV

"Rise and shine!" I strolled into the coffee shop where I work as a barista and threw a cheerful greeting at the manager, but he was too busy to even acknowledge me. No biggie, I strutted in like I owned the place.

As I pushed the glass door open, I spotted a fresh face dishing out coffee to customers. I took a deep breath, accepting that I was running a tad late, but seriously, who drops a new staff member on us without a heads-up?

"Hey team!" I called out, practically bouncing into the kitchen. Just then, I heard my name, "Isla!" I whipped around, grinning like a Cheshire cat. "Good morning, sir," I chirped again, just a little reminder that I had already tried to say hi, but he was too busy to notice.

He handed me a letter, his expression as serious as a tax audit. "Am I supposed to read this for you?" I asked, my voice laced with a mix of concern and curiosity. "Just read it and quit with the silly questions," he shot back, leaning against the counter like he was the king of coffee.

I snatched the letter, my heart doing a little cha-cha of excitement. What could this possibly be about? I ripped open the envelope and dove into the contents, my eyes darting across the page like they were on a mission.

As I read, my face morphed from intrigued to utterly flabbergasted. The letter was a termination notice, declaring that my barista days were over. A wave of disappointment crashed over me. What had I even done to deserve this?

I glanced up at the manager, who was still lounging against the counter, giving me the death stare. "Is this some kind of prank?" I shot back, trying to keep my cool.

He shook his head like I'd just suggested we serve decaf. "No, Isla. Your performance has been less than stellar, and we've made the decision to part ways."

Anger bubbled up inside me. "Less than stellar?" I echoed, my voice climbing a few octaves. "I've always clocked in on time and given it my all. What else do you want from me?"

The manager let out a heavy sigh. "It's not just about showing up and doing the bare minimum, Isla. It's about your attitude, teamwork, and commitment. And honestly, you've been falling short in all those areas." He paused, his face as serious as a heart attack. "Your recent attitude towards our esteemed customer, Mr. Xander, was downright unacceptable. We can't afford to lose him, and I can't have you jeopardizing our business relationships."

Anger and hurt surged through me like a tidal wave, and I couldn't help but unleash my fiery defense. "Excuse me? I've poured my heart and soul into this business, crafting every cup with love. And this is how you repay me? By throwing shade in front of everyone?" My voice shot up, eyes blazing like I was ready to set the room on fire. "And about your personal life? Maybe your marital woes have less to do with age or menopause and more to do with your own glaring flaws as a human being!"

The manager's face turned a delightful shade of crimson, but I stood my ground, my words hanging in the air like a gauntlet thrown down.

"I've had it!" I shouted, tossing the letter back at him like it was a hot potato and grabbing my handbag. I stormed out of the office, leaving him there, mouth agape and glaring daggers at me. His angry gaze would have burned a hole through steel, but honestly, I was too furious to care. The door slammed behind me, echoing my triumph down the hallway. I muttered under my breath, "What a miserable, sadistic excuse for a person!"

As I walked away, a wave of liberation washed over me. I was done with that toxic workplace and the manager's relentless belittling. I inhaled deeply, letting the cool air fill my lungs, and strutted out of the building.

"Xander will regret this," I seethed, still fuming over the injustice. "He owes me for all my hard work, and instead, he decides to take my job?!" I dug through my purse, only to realize I had left my phone on the counter. "Ugh, seriously?!" I cursed, recalling the manager's condescending remarks. "What a stubborn, obstinate jerk!"

I stormed back into the office, ready to snatch my phone like it was the last slice of pizza at a party. The manager was still there, looking all smug and self-satisfied. "What are you doing here, Isla?" he asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm like a leaky faucet. I shot him a glare that could melt steel. "I'm here for my phone, you coward!" I snapped, my voice as cold as ice. I grabbed my phone and turned on my heel, my eyes blazing with indignation.

I dialed Sophy's number, pacing anxiously by the fuel station, practically willing her to pick up. The sounds of cars zooming by and the rhythmic hum of the fuel pumps surrounded me as I tried to wrap my head around my unexpected firing. After what felt like a century, Sophy finally answered, her cheerful voice a much-needed balm for my frayed nerves.

"Hey, girl! What's up?" Sophy chirped, all sunshine and rainbows.

"I just got fired," I blurted out, my emotions spilling over like a shaken soda can.

There was a moment of silence on the other end. "What? How did that happen? You're an amazing barista!" she exclaimed, disbelief evident in her tone.

I sighed, feeling a lump in my throat. "The manager said I had a bad attitude and wasn't a team player. But honestly, it's because I stood up to Xander the day he waltzed into the shop for coffee."

Sophy's voice turned fierce, like a lioness ready to pounce. "That jerk! I always knew he was trouble. But don't sweat it, we'll tackle this together. Where are you?"

I glanced around, taking in the familiar sights of the fuel station. "Just down the street from the coffee shop. I was too furious to drive anywhere else."

"Stay put, I'm on my way," Sophy declared, her voice brimming with determination. "We'll plot our next move over coffee, or maybe something a bit stronger."

I couldn't help but smile, feeling a wave of relief wash over me. "Okay, princess, just come and scoop me up. Let's cruise around and figure out our next steps," I said, trying to sound more upbeat.

Sophy laughed, and the call ended. Just a few minutes later, she called back. "Guess what? I just landed you a gig as a babysitter!" she exclaimed.

I was totally shocked. "A babysitter?!" I echoed, my tone dripping with skepticism. "Sophy, please! I'm a barista not a babysitter!"
