Chapter 5 Damn, why do these things always happen to me

Lis looks incredulous at Luísa and wishes she could find a hole in the ground to hide in and avoid such embarrassment. Her sister treats her as if she were a helpless baby, which makes her extremely embarrassed in front of strangers. She grimaces at Luísa, showing disapproval, but Luísa pays no attention and continues guiding Jack into the house. All three enter, and Lis sees Lian on the sofa, sitting, playing with the children. The children run toward Lis, hugging her.

"Auntie, we missed you. Why did you arrive so late?" Leon says, caressing Lis's face.

Lian gets up and approaches Lis.

"Lis, why didn't you ask me to pick you up? You know it wouldn't have been any trouble. From now on, I'll take you and pick you up every day until you learn to drive and get a car for yourself."

"I believe it's more than time for you to learn to drive, Lis. There's no need to risk taking the bus. Besides, have you thought about how long it will take you to get here?"

"I know, sis, but you know I'm afraid to drive. Since Dad had that accident when we were kids..." Lis tries to argue.

"But, Lis, that was many years ago. I had even forgotten about it. For God's sake, girl, I can't be constantly worried that something might happen to you. Lis can't take it anymore and decides to go upstairs for a shower, while Luísa stays with her guest in the living room, talking. When she comes down, everyone is already at the table.

"Finally, you came down," Luísa says. The table is set, and everyone eats while they talk.

Lis is still a bit uncomfortable because she has always been more shy than her sister. Luísa had no trouble dealing with people and making friends quickly. In just a few minutes, it seemed like Luísa had known Jack for years. The conversation flowed very naturally. After dinner, Jack gets up and says he has to go home because he has to wake up very early.

"Already? The conversation was so good. When will you come here again?" Jack looks at Lis, who shrinks with embarrassment.

"As soon as she invites me again, I'll definitely come," he says with a warm smile.

Lis thanks Jack once again for his help and apologizes for her sister, explaining that she's like that with everyone. Jack didn't mind Luísa's treatment at all; he even liked it because it had been a long time since he had felt the warmth of a family.

He says goodbye, gets in his car, and Lis goes back inside.

"Is this for real, Lu? For heaven's sake, it wasn't necessary. He's my boss, and now, not only did he save me from those idiots, and I'm embarrassed because of that. I had to spend the entire dinner looking at him."

"Listen, you silly girl, you should be grateful he was there. Otherwise, what would have happened to you? And stop with this embarrassment nonsense. I didn't do anything shameful; I just invited him in to eat with us as a thank-you for what he did," Luísa says, going up the stairs with Belinda in her arms, already asleep.

Lis sits on the couch with her arms crossed.

"Damn, why do these things always happen to me? On my first day of work, I have to go through something like this. Also, I'm such a fool; I see that it's all dark, and I still move forward. What Luiza said is really true; I have to thank that he was passing by. If he hadn't, I don't even know what those guys would have done to me. He's a true gentleman, and he didn't take advantage of me at any moment. I can't deny that. Besides, he's handsome, which I also can't deny," Lis thinks, sighing.

"Lis, how are you? I told you I could pick you up on the way home. Why didn't you accept? You know that if something had happened to you, your sister would have gone crazy, don't you? She would have blamed me for everything," Liam says as he enters the living room.

"I know that, Liam, but you know I hate to bother anyone, right? That's just my way. You already leave the office so late, and you always rush home because of the kids. I don't want to be a bother at all. Your life is not easy, it's already a never-ending hustle, and now you have to take care of me, like my babysitter. That won't work, you know how I am, Liam."

"You're really silly, Liz! You know that your sister and I worry about you. For me, it wouldn't be a bother at all. I like taking care of you. To me, you're like my little sister too, and I wouldn't forgive myself if something bad happened to you. Besides, after this, I'll be taking you to and from the hospital every day. We can't risk losing you, so that's how it's going to be, until you can buy a car for yourself."

"My God! You're both overly concerned, guys! You don't need to do this. I can take care of myself. Have you forgotten that I'm already an adult? I know how to get around. This was just a mistake on my part. I really shouldn't have walked down that dark alley. But now, I'll definitely be more careful next time."

"Yeah, I saw how well you can take care of yourself. If it weren't for Dr. Jack, God only knows what could have happened to you, my sister! We're doing this for your own good. You need to understand, Lis, that we don't mind helping you with whatever you need. We just want what's best for you, nothing more."

"I know, Lu, but I don't want to be a burden, and I know that for Liam, taking me to the hospital is an inconvenience. He even has to make two U-turns to pick me up. I don't like to be a bother at all. You've known me since I was little, and you know how I am."

"Oh, here comes your paranoia again. So, if you don't want to be a burden to anyone, buy a car, Lis. You know how to drive; all you lack is courage. You have the money; just buy a car, and then you can drive to work every day. You won't inconvenience us at all, and we'll leave you in peace," Luiza says.

I can't, I'm afraid, you know, Lu, ever since that accident you had, I can't ride in a car anymore. I'm afraid it'll happen again, and that I could put my life or someone else's at risk. - Liz says, head down.

Alright, my dear, don't be like this. You don't need to be sad like that. We know everything you went through that night, so don't worry; it will all be in your own time! - Luísa says, embracing Liz.
