In the car Mary was speaking with her husband. It seemed he wasn't coming home early tonight. From her own part of the conversation, which I was hearing obviously, I heard her asking him why he would be going on a dinner date with his bosses with his secretary and not her.
Whatever it was that was happening, I knew for sure her man was cheating.
Gosh I sounded like Chloe. That was a total Chloe thing to say.
Mary ended the call and turned to me with a sad face.
"Well looks like I'll be having dinner alone again tonight." She said trying to smile. It was upon closer look that I found out that she had few wrinkles on her face. She only used make up to cover them up.
"Alone?" I asked surprised. "Isn't there no one else to have dinner with you at home?" I didn't want to be so rude as to ask if she didn't have any kids. I knew it was uncourteous to ask a woman that.
"Well there would have been if Tony didn't send Tom off to stay with his grandma for the summer." She explained.
" Who's Tom?" I asked. I knew from her conversation with her husband that his name was Tony.
"Tom is my cute little boy." She said smiling fondly. Her eyes lit up at the thought of him. "He's eight and he's already so smart and matured."
I smiled at her. She loved her son. I'm sure her son did to her too.
"Tom must be so amazing, I hope to meet him soon." I said, " if you don't mind." I added.
"Ofcourse, I usually bring him to work whenever he wasn't going to school." She said. I smiled at that. We both went silent for a while.
My phone beeped and I looked at it. It was a text from Chloe.
Get takeouts while you're coming home. Macroni or anything that slurps. I ruined dinner. :'(
Oh crap. She ruined dinner again?
I immediately sent her a reply.
I'm on it. Just don't touch anything else.
Chloe was one of the worst cooks that walked the earth. If she managed to make a decent meal. It wasn't really a meal. It was probably coffee, or bacon or grilled eggs. But when it came to cooking a full course meal, it was a disaster.
And you'd think she would learn her lesson. Let's just say my best friend and roommate was good at...other things.
Kay Kay.
She replied my text.
"Uhm, Mary can I quickly stop by at the restaurant and get some takeout food for home?" I requested. " My roommate ruined dinner."
"Ohh wow, I'm sorry." She said smiling sympathetically. " Ofcourse we can."
She then asked the driver to stop by at any good restaurant so I could order our food.
The Uber driver soon stopped us at a big Chinese restaurant and both Mary, she insisted by the way, and the driver waited for me while I went in to order the food.
I ordered chilli spiced spaghetti and meatballs in a large quantity because I needed to have leftovers for breakfast tomorrow.
...........
Few minutes later, we were at my place. It turned out that Mary and I were both headed in the same direction but her place was much farther than mine. The driver pulled up in front of my building and I got down carrying my bag and the cartons of ordered food.
"See ya tomorrow." Mary said smiling as she looked at me from the window.
"You sure you don't wanna come in?" I asked her. She was going home to have dinner with no one at home. Besides Chloe and I couldn't finish all these Chinese food.
"Maybe next time sweetheart." She smiled. "I promise to hang out with you and your roommate."
" Alright". I smiled at her. She was such a sweet soul. She even insisted that she paid for the entire ride. I knew I owed her lunch at work the next day for that.
"See you tomorrow." I finally said.
"Good night." She said while rolling up the tinted glass of the Uber.
I watched as they drove away before turning and heading inside the building to meet Chloe.
..............
"There's my favorite human." Chloe said when she sighted me with the food. I rolled my eyes.
" I knew you'd save me. Who wants a prince in shinning armour when you can have a sexy damsel carrying takeouts." She joked and I laughed at that.
" Is that your way of apologizing for ruining dinner?" I asked her raising my eyebrows in mock annoyance.
" Is that your way of thanking me for saving your ass from fucking your boss again today?" She asked with a sly smile.
The bitch. I bit my lip.
Well.
" You're a bitch Chloe." I said to her as I headed into the kitchen.
"And you love me that way." She retorted as she followed me to the kitchen. I brought out the cartons of food and poured the ones we would both be eating tonight into a large ceramic bowl. The one Chloe and I used to eat popcorn when ever we were watching movies.
"Seriously though, Cherry, was he really your one night stand?" She asked as she got out the forks from their positions.
"Mmmm, yummy." I said ignoring Chloe's question. That restaurant was it. I was salivating already.
"Cherry?!" She raised her voice impatiently.
"Okay okay, so yeah he, my boss, Mr Brandon Black is my boss. " I said resignedly.
We both sat down to eat while I gave her details about my day that got from twisted to fucked up until it got to Mary's husband and not going home but claiming to have dinner with his bosses.
"He's cheating on her." Chloe, the ever ready relationship detective and therapist, declared.
"I wouldn't say that." I said. "Maybe he really was having dinner with his bosses." I didn't even know why I was defending the man. I didn't know him and there was a big probability that Chloe was right. But somehow I just felt like that wouldn't be good for Mary and her adorable kid Tom.
"Well if you can't read the fingers on the wall then just never mind." She shrugged and took a drink of water.
We were both sitting on the floor in our living room and eating from the same bowl.
After dinner while Chloe did the dishes I went to take my bath. After I wrapped the towel on my body, my phone dinged.
UNKNOWN: Hello Cherry.
What the hell?
Who could it be.
ME: hello? Who is this please?
I thought it could be Mary or Steven or I inhaled sharply with wide eyes..... OMG! Brad!
I thought of dialing the number to find out who it was but I decided against it. For all I knew it could be Brad. And I didn't want to speak with him just yet.
Chloe came into the room at that time. She sat doing her facials. She did that every night before she slept.
"So how was your day at home today?" I asked her as I carried a book I was reading for the night.
"Good. Boring as usual." She said while still applying some sort of whitish creme unto her face. "I spoke with my mom." She said and I turned to her. She didn't look like she was affected in anyway by mentioning her mom. But knowing Chloe I knew it was a hard thing for her. She and her mom never went along.
"Did she say anything to you?" I asked her concerned.
" Nothing really. She only asked for a few bucks." She said to me.
Chloe's mom was a drug addict and the only person she had left. I up from my side of the bed and went to meet her. Then I hugged her shoulder as she sat down. She stopped whatever it was she was doing momentarily and took the hug from me.
"I'll always be here okay?" I said, fucking meaning it. " No matter what happens. We got each other." I assured her. She nodded in my arms and sniffed. We both continued to hug like that. It had always been us against the world. That wasn't ending now.
