Chapter 8 What is wrong with you

Cyrus's POV

My plan to avoid my mother was flushed down the drain because of the new development. I had no choice but to call my mother and sister and share the good news with them. Unfortunately, I didn't time the situation correctly and called her at the wrong time. Mom had summoned a meeting with the entire pack and answered the call there. Thanks to their wolf hearing, they all heard that I'd found my mate so I couldn't tell her the whole story.

The phone rest on the dashboard of my car for her voice was loud enough to be called a speaker. She was speaking with so much excitement that I wasn't sure how to tell her about the stupid stunt I pulled off. As usual, she was already planning the Luna ritual and thinking about baby names. It's only been an hour since I told her. I wasn't even sure why I told her in the first place. I should have kept it a secret from the woman. Maybe a big part of me wanted her to know that the son she seemed cursed to never find his mate has finally found her.

"Mom, can you go somewhere private with Cyra? I need to speak to the two of you alone," I asked politely with an extra, super polite tone. Surprisingly, she agreed with a squeal and did leave. I exhaled with relief as I heard her feet rush away from the crowd with Cyra mumbling and cussing behind her. I'm not sure what her problem was and I didn't bother to ask. "Are you alone now?"

"Yes, what is it?" Cyra asked.

"The lady in question is Mindy's friend," I repeated what I'd already told them. I intentionally paused. Neither mom nor Cyra liked the concept of a human mate. Not that they had shown deep repulsion towards it, they just never thought it was a good idea for a werewolf to be mated to a human, especially if the werewolf is an alpha. I bit down on my lower lip. I didn't know what their reaction would be. Arabel didn't look like a woman who would swallow criticism and abuse just like that. She looked more like a 'misbehave and I'll dump your ass even if I love you' kind of woman. Sure, you can't judge a book by its cover but isn't being extra careful worth it?

"Cyrus, what's wrong?" Cyra asked worriedly, detecting the concern in my voice and of course, the pause. "Is your mate okay? Is she crippled or something... wait," she gasped with an outrageous tone, "is she a he?"

"What?! No! It's a she, I'm sure the person I saw is a woman! It's not that at all. The thing is that she's human, an ordinary human,"

"Oh," mom and Cyra simultaneously said. Their tone was unclear. I wasn't sure if they were disappointed or shocked, their tone was blank and well, empty. Even if they end up not liking Arabel, I would still make her my mate. I've waited for so long and I wasn't foolish enough to throw away my blessing just because it has a little stain on it. Other alphas had human mates and although it was dangerous, they were still living happily. All I had to do was make sure she was perfectly protected and I'll be fine. "Oh well, a half loaf of bread is better than none," Cyra suddenly said, breaking the silence. The next thing I heard was a loud smack and Cyra's painful cry. "Why?!" She hollered.

"Don't call your brother's mate half! Whether she's a human, a witch, or even an ogre, she is the woman the goddess deemed worthy for him so there must be a reason. I haven't met her yet but I already love her. Human or not, she's going to wipe the shame your brother's matelessness is causing the pack! That is all that should matter!" Kent wagged his tail happily hearing our mother defend us. It was one of those super rare moments. I didn't expect her to express her gratitude and approval so quickly. I thought she'd blow a fuse and Cyra thought about that too because she muttered a "wow".

"Thank you, mom. I didn't expect this but thanks," I smiled, then my smile froze on my face as I remembered the other stupid thing I did. Unfortunately, Cyra knew me too well and snorted following the silence from me. She figured it out.

"Mom, remember that time Cyrus had a crush on the daughter of the alpha of the Peak Blade pack? And that time he liked Cindy and Joelle? Remember the foolish thing he did in the name of teasing?" I rolled my eyes as my mother gasped. "His silence proves it, he did it again."

"Cyrus! What is wrong with you?!" I've asked myself that question for so long. Every time I feel something for a girl, I tend to act foolish and ruin it before it even starts. I only ever stay confident and sensible around girls I didn't like, you know, no strings attached relationships. "You are the biggest idiot I have ever encountered in my life!!!" She yelled. "How could you have let your stupidity leak so early?!!! Don't you have a brain?!" Note, it wasn't a question, it was a direct insult.

"Mom..." I drawled tiredly.

"Son..." she mimicked scornfully.

"Please can you let me explain?"

"Please can you just die?! It's better I don't have a stupid son like you than to have one!" She yelled. I exhaled out of my nostrils. "You know the mate bond is strong, even to humans. You didn't have to show off how idiotically immature you are!!! Now, what do you plan on doing? Show off more stupidity?!!!" I hated it when she yelled and I was already frustrated so I snapped.

"Will you stop yelling?!" I roared at her. "You cannot keep yelling at me every single time like I'm some kind of kid! I made a mistake and I accept it! I don't need you to add to what I'm feeling right now so fuck off, mom!!! God! How did dad even put up with you? You're so annoying!" I regretted every word I thundered after it was uttered. "Mom, I'm s..." she hung up. Great, now my mother was furious.

«You are rocking it off today,» Kent said mockingly. «Let me cheer you on. Go, Cyrus, go, Cyrus, go Cyrus go Cyrus.» If he was a physical form I could beat, I would have punched the life out of him, but again, he was right. I was having a really bad day.

«Loser» He added. I sighed as I parked the car in front of the California ranch house dad bought in LA. The house blended with the surrounding a lot and it had more tinted glass windows than I appreciated but dad used to love the house.

I killed the engine of the car and rest my head on the steering wheel with a heavy exhale. I counted the minutes Cyra would call to scream at me for hurting her mother. Cyra and mom might fight a lot but she was always the first to jump to her defense. It took only ten seconds for my phone to ring. I ignored her calls, and after ten missed calls, she sent me an SMS.

She used the term "my" instead of yours.

«Isn't this most delightful?» Kent said sarcastically.

«Okay shut up, Kent» I snapped. I closed my eyes and forced a telepathic exchange with mom. It was difficult to maintain a telepathic conversation due to the distance between us, but as my family member, it was easier to communicate with her than with others. Except for Cyra, of course.

"Hi mom," I sang.

"Leave me alone," she sobbed.

"Come on, mom, I'm sorry."

"No, come back here let me show you annoying," she said lowly. Did I hurt her with what... a stupid question. It was kinda satisfying though. I mean, she hurt us 70% of the time with her words so every time I made her cry, it, unfortunately, made me happy. Yes, it was sick but it is what it is.

"I love you, mom."

"I don't love you! I love myself only and you are not included!"

"I love you

You love me

We are a happy family

With a great big hug

And a kiss from me to you

Won't you say you love me too?" I sang the song dad always sang when he annoyed her. She would always smile like an idiot over that ridiculous song. I didn't know the secret behind the childish song, but it worked wonders for her.

"We are not a happy family," she murmured, but I could tell she was shy thanks to her voice. See what I mean by wonders?

"But I still love you,"

"I don't." She deadpanned.

"Mom, here's my promise. I will take my time to win her back and then bring her to you, fair enough?" There was silence for a few seconds before she sighed.

"Let the mate bond speak for you. Just kiss her or touch her to activate the bond and she won't be able to resist no matter what."

"But as a human with reasoning and dignity, she will see the kiss as a mistake and get worked up about why she's so attracted to me. She will still fight hard. My only hope now is for her to accept my apology and become my friend."

"And that's not the main issue," Mom sighed. That is the least of the issue. "How are you going to tell her about us? Our kind? She will freak out. But I'm sure that when the time comes, all you need to do is open your big mouth and say the words or you will never be able to mate with her. Good luck, son, and I love you too."

I grinned mischievously. "I don't love you anymore, I change my mind. Byeee!" I cut off the connection and quickly turned off my two phones before she called me back and make me swallow my words. Mother wasn't all that bad, but only father could really understand her.
