Chapter 5 No.5

Aurelia and I have been working on this science project for an hour and so far we've gotten nothing done.

Every time I try to think of an idea Aurelia says something idiotic, making me want to go punch a brick wall.

Like now for instance.

I'm in the middle of googling a project idea, since our teacher is too old school to know how to use the internet, when Aurelia says something.

"Are you done yet, princess?" She says making my grip on my phone tighten

What is up with her and the name 'princess'?!

"I swear to god, Aurelia" I say with obvious annoyance as I turn to face the overly confident grey eyed girl

She instantly smirks at my reaction causing me to glare at her with irritation.

I don't trust her.

I feel like she's planning something.

"You're cute when you're mad" she teases causing me to grip the library table with a great amount of force so that I do not accidentally break my phone

I choose to ignore her, hoping that she'll get the blatantly obvious hint. I'm proved wrong when she pokes my upper arm.

Gosh, she has the attention span of a child.

"You can't ignore me, princess" she says matter of factly

"I can try, can't I, and stop calling me 'princess'" I say as I go back to responsibly googling information

"Why, does it bother you?" She teases as she goes to poke me again only for me to quickly grab her finger and push it away from me

"Look here, Aurelia, I'm only here with you right now because you just had to go and sabotage my plan, if it wasn't for my grade point average I wouldn't even be here right now," I inform her, not hiding the acidity from my voice

"If you're going to continue to sit here and annoy me to the point of insanity then I'll do this project at my house and only put my name on it," I continue to threaten

"So you can either sit there and help me with this godforsaken project or leave so that I can get some actual work done" I finish, my hazel eyes never breaking away from her grey ones

She takes a moment of silence before giving me a single head nod.

"Okay, I'll help you" she agrees, finally complying with my wishes

"Thank you" I sigh out in relief

Now we can actually get some work done.

-

Aurelia finishes typing the last sentence of our project as I continue to struggle for oxygen beside her.

"Y-You're kidding" I gasp out breathlessly as her nose begins to redden with embarrassment

A couple minutes ago I finished my half of the presentation so I decided to give Aurelia a few ideas for her part. All the while she was typing she decided that she wanted to play twenty questions.

Of course, I being the logical one at the time, denied the request and urged her to finish her last paragraph.

She, being one to not take 'no' for an answer, asked me a question to start off. She asked me what my middle name was.

I told her that I would reveal mine after she does hers.

"Why would I lie, princess?" She questions lowly

I continue to laugh as her fingers cease typing to rest against the wooden library table. Her grey eyes shift their attention from the computer to my laughing figure.

"I'm sorry, I just-" I cut myself off not being able to finish my sentence

She nods with an amused facial expression.

"I might get it changed when I'm in my twenties" she says with a serious tone of voice as I successfully cease my chaotic laughter

I immediately grab her hand causing her full attention to be on me.

"No, don't. It's beautiful, I just wasn't expecting it" I tell her honestly

We sit there for a moment, just calmly gazing endlessly into one another's eyes.

I am thoroughly fascinated with the shade of her eyes, though I will never admit that out loud.

At this moment her eyes seem nice, almost gentle-like.

If it wasn't for my phone ringing who knows how far down the rabbit hole my mind would've went.

I quickly snatch my hand out of hers and grab my backpack as well as my cellphone.

You would've thought that she burned me with how fast I was rushing to get away from her.

"I, Uh, I have to get to class, don't want to be late" I ramble out pathetically as I practically trip over my feet

She gives me a confused facial expression as I rush away from her and out of the nearly empty library.

I answer my phone, not stopping to check the caller identification.

"Hello?" I answer as I begin to walk normally towards the cafeteria where I know Bailey and Faith are

We have five more minutes until we're supposed to go back to class.

I just needed an excuse to get out of Aurelia's proximity, even if it was a blatantly obvious excuse.

"Hey, babe, can we talk?" The one person I never wanted to hear from again asks

I unconsciously slow my steps from shock but continue to search for Bailey and Faith.

"Don't call me that" I demand as my eyes land on my friends, they seem to be arguing about something

Seriously, again?!

"Look, Hanna, I don't want to fight" he says with a sigh, seemingly becoming irritated

"Then why did you call me?" I question as I sit across from Bailey and Faith

"We need to talk, today preferably" he says with a determined tone

I sigh which causes Bailey and Faith to face me with angered facial expressions.

Oh god.

"Chadley, I have to go" I say preparing to hang up. I don't miss the shocked look that passes through Bailey and Faiths facial features.

"Meet me at my house after school, I'll let you in" he says before I hang up

I take a deep breath in before exhaling and placing my phone inside of my backpack.

"What happened between you two?" I question my friends

"No, don't try to pretend like you didn't just have a phone call with your no good ex" Faith is quick to say causing me to rub my temples

"I appreciate your concern, Faith, but I don't want to talk about it" I say politely since I don't want to involve her in this mess

She nods with understanding as she points towards an empty spot on her lunch tray.

"I had a slice of coconut cake right here, as I was going to eat it I noticed that it was gone" she explains

"She thinks that I took it" Bailey informs me nonchalantly

"Well, did you?" I ask, trying to get down to business

"Yes, I did" she responds with an unbothered facial expression

I have to pinch my inner arm to stop me from laughing at this situation.

This happens all the time.

I take a dollar bill from my backpack and hand it to Faith.

"Use this and go buy another slice of cake" I tell her as her eyes light up with delight

"Yes, ma'am" she jokes before standing up and practically speed walking towards the dessert line

Great.

Now the both of them are happy.

-

I can't believe I'm really doing this?

"Hanna, I don't care how long it takes, I'll be waiting out here for you" my mom informs me from the drivers seat

I nod with a genuine smile before unbuckling my seatbelt and getting out of her car. I slowly begin to make my way up their driveway and porch stairs.

As I'm about to knock on their door it swings open to reveal a guilty looking Chadley.

"Hi" he says with a guilty tone of voice

Is he seriously trying to make me feel bad for him?

"Are you going to tell me why you invited me over?" I say skipping the pleasantries

He nods, stepping aside so that I can enter his mothers household. Before doing so I glance back at my mom, who is watching up with an intense look in her eyes.

When I'm successfully standing in the middle of the foyer he closes the door and makes his way to stand in front of me.

"Would you like something to drink?" He asks with a civil tone

I sigh as I cross my arms, not in the mood for staying here longer than needed.

"No, I would like it if you told me why you called me down here" I say

I notice the corner of his lip twitch with amusement but choose not to comment on it.

"I called you here to talk about the gala on Friday" he says making me throw my arms up with regret

"Seriously?!" I question

"Yes, I need a favor" he says making my eyes widen with suppressed anger

"Why should I do any type of favor for you?" I spit out with pure acidity

"Listen, Hanna, I understand why you don't trust me but please just think about my family" he begs with a desperate tone of voice

Chadley's family.

Knowing him I doubt that he told his family that I broke up with him, much less that he cheated on me.

With this information I can already assume what the favor is.

"Fine, What do you want?" I question

"I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend for that night" he says

The idea of what he's proposing makes me sick.

"Why can't you ask Ava, I'm sure she would love to tell your grandma how she ruined our relationship" I suggest

"One, my family loves you and, two, she won't talk to me" he says making me laugh

How did he not see that happening?

"So, you're relying on me to be your date so that your family doesn't find out what really happened between us?" I question, nailing him

He nods his head.

"I'll think about it" I decide to answer

I need time to think this through.

I want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing for me.

"That's fair. Give me a call when you have an answer?" He suggests

I nod my head as my eyes drift towards a random wall. He tries to hug me but I hold my hand out, signaling for him to stop, before I make my way towards the front door.

As I close the door behind me I notice my mom's relieved facial expression from inside the car. I quickly make my way towards said car so that I can get home and come up with a strategy.

I'm only fifteen years old, my life shouldn't be this hard.

-

As soon as I got home I video chatted both Bailey and Faith and told them my dilemma.

I like to get an outsiders view on my problem since, scientifically speaking, when it come to a crush or an ex your emotions are intensified.

"Hanna, do not trust him, we all know how that ended the first time" Faith says with a look of disbelief

"Yeah, he's just trying to reel you in again" Bailey adds on

"But guys, I don't want to upset his family, they're all amazing people" I try to defend as I begin to feel guilty

"It's not your fault that, that 'amazing' gene didn't get passed down to him" Faith says

I sigh with sadness as I lean back in my desk chair.

Do I trust Chadley? Absolutely not.

Do I want to upset his family? Absolutely not.

I just feel trapped.

Bailey rolls her eyes as she sits up straighter.

"If you go with him then I'm going too, I can't risk him taking advantage of you" she says with a caring tone of voice

"That's what he's doing right now, have you not heard of manipulation?!" Faith yells with an angered voice

"Don't listen to her Hanna, I'll be by your side the whole time" Bailey says with a gentle smile

Oh my god.

They sound like my conscience.
