THE GIRL
(14 years later in the Hospital)
The creaking sound of door was heard as a young nurse stepped inside the room carrying a tray of medicines, while her junior watched from a distance.
As the lady tidied her hair and stood watching the mirror. Her reflection showed a painful face filled with wrinkles, she moistens her lips to look attractive. She slowly touches her hair locks with her moisten fingers adjusting and parting it to look decent. The nurses giggled among themselves looking at her behavior, and then the senior interrupted her display.
"Priya?"
"Who Me!!..."
"Yes!!
"Your roster has been changed."
The senior nurse confirmed. She continued.
"There is change to the management as of now Dr Cynthia would be taking in-charge of the operations of the entire hospital instead of her husband. She wanted to meet you,"
"Nice to know that."
Priya replied with a smile on her face.
"You can accompany me, Priya."
Senior nurse said.
"Yes!! Yes!!"
Dr Priya said enthusiastically
"Once you are done with her meeting you will only report to me, Miss Priya. I am your senior."
The nurse commanded
"Yes!!"
Priya gulped down her tablets and followed the nurses as they took the stairs to Dr Cynthia's Cabin which was at the end of the hallway of the second floor. On reaching the cabin Priya was in emotion as she saw her guide who trained her once. It had been 14 years since she saw her, and it was somewhat satisfaction to see her mentor standing in front of her.
Dr. Cynthia stood up from her seat and walked towards Priya. At that moment she instructed the nurses to leave them for a moment.
She could see Dr Priya trying to control her emotions; she at once put her hands across her shoulders. It didn't take time before Priya burst out in tears.
"Child, no more tears."
"Its not tears of pain Madam, its tears of joy to see someone who I can recognize after all this years."
She remarked
"I am extremely sorry, I should have stayed back and seen you through the studies and post graduate. You would have been a successful doctor by now."
Dr Cynthia commented
"I have lost all hope Doctor; it's hard to forget the pain and trauma I went through. All I want is to be in midst of patients helping them to recover their wounds and pain."
Priya replied.
"How can a Doctor treat the sick if she is a patient herself? My child what I have heard contradicts what I am seeing in front of me. You are totally aware of yourself and your surroundings, your memory is not lost it's your confidence and inner spirit is."
"Madam, I don't remember anything after that day, expect for you and my parents. I hardly can recollect anything else. I cannot recollect any procedures, either any material or any drugs. Which could cause serious repercussions"
She confessed,
"You are destroying yourself by not being what you are,"
Dr Cynthia said.
"I am grateful to sir for providing me a place in this hospital. My parents have requested Sir to give me this room on assurance I work in this hospital without any pay in any given post in service of patients." Priya said with a bittersweet tone.
Dr Cynthia stared at sorrowful looking Doctor, she brushed her hair away and walked over to the window.
"Is there any problem, Madam. Do you want me relocate?" she asked
Dr. Cynthia began, "I heard your parents pleaded with my husband and I thank him for his decision. You see Priya, I was a teacher for 30 years and when I stepped into this hospital. I was just another surgeon but then I met my husband who changed my life for good. All these years of teaching, I realize that I learned more from my students than what I had learnt all my life." She paused and then continued
"Then you were among the last batch of students whom I had taught. Honestly, you were slow learner but you proved them wrong in studies. It was your determination, commitment and sacrifice which I saw you through. I never expected this turn of events my child. I am sorry once again that I wasn't there to understand this pain and turbulence that you have gone through in your life."
Dr Cynthia said.
"I can't change that day and that moment, Madam" Priya replied with tears.
"I will see to it that the case is reopened my child and I would like to see you once again in my OPD." Dr Cynthia advised.
"Thank you, madam. I will work hard."
"Yes, you have to Priya. It's all in your mind and I will be there this time to stand by your side. You can stay on. This is not a government hospital its private. The rules are within my reach. This is one of the few good decisions which my husband has taken to help a student of the hospital."
Dr Cynthia stated
"Madam, I am quite obliged to share my room with any of the staff members if the need arises so."
Priya reassured with a soft tone in her voice.
"Yes, I would be letting you know about it mostly the young nurses may require a room to study or spend the night."
Dr Cynthia specified as she walked her upto the door.
"Thank you ,madam."
"Just be yourself, Priya. "
She stood by the door and watched as Doctor Priya walked away with drooping shoulders and slow steps.
