"I have checked it four times. sir." The manager pushed the card back with two fingers. as if it were contaminated. "The bank has placed a hard freeze on all Vanguard personal lines. The reason code says... Breach of Contract."
I stood outside the store. watching through the glass. I didn't feel the rush of joy I expected. I felt a heavy. cold disappointment. I remembered when Jason gave me a similar card for our first anniversary. He told me to buy something nice. but then he complained when I spent more than a hundred dollars on a dress for a charity gala. He had kept me on a leash for three years. Now. I was the one holding the chain.
Julian stood behind me. His presence was a solid. warm weight. He didn't speak. He just waited for me to decide how far I wanted to go.
"You should go in." Julian whispered. His voice was a low. possessive hum near my ear. "The thrill of the counterattack is better when they have to look you in the eye."
I stepped through the heavy glass doors. The bell chimed. a bright and mocking sound in the tense silence of the shop. Jason spun around. His face was a mask of fury. but when he saw me. his expression shifted to shock.
"Sarah." He breathed my name like a curse.
"The necklace is beautiful. Elena." I said. I didn't look at Jason. I looked at the diamonds resting against Elena's throat. "But it doesn't belong to you. Nothing in this store belongs to you anymore."
"What did you do." Jason stepped toward me. His fists were clenched at his sides. "Did you hack my accounts. You think your little inheritance gives you the right to mess with my personal life."
"I didn't hack anything." I said. I pulled my own card from my bag. It was the gold Miller Private Trust card. I handed it to the manager. "I bought the bank. Jason. The Vanguard lines were backed by Miller assets that your father put up as collateral in 1995. Since you broke the marriage pact. the collateral has been reclaimed. You aren't just declined. You're broke."
The manager's eyes widened. He took my card and processed the transaction in seconds.
"The necklace is paid for. Ms. Miller." The manager bowed slightly.
"Good." I looked at Elena. She was frozen. her face pale with shame. "Take it off. Elena. I don't like my property being touched by second-hand thieves."
Elena scrambled to unhook the clasp. Her fingers were shaking so hard she nearly dropped it. She placed the necklace on the velvet tray. I didn't even pick it up.
"Wrap it." I told the manager. "And send it to the Miller Foundation for displaced women. It can be auctioned to pay for a dozen scholarships."
Jason looked like he wanted to strike me. He was a man who had always used his wealth as a shield. Now that I had taken the shield. he was just a small. angry person in an expensive suit.
"You're going to regret this. Sarah." Jason hissed. "You think you're a queen. but you're just a housewife playing a game you don't understand."
"I understood it well enough to take your company in twelve hours." I said. I felt the cold determination Serena wanted me to show. I didn't feel like a victim anymore. I felt like a hunter. "Go home. Jason. If you can still afford the gas for the car."
I turned and walked out. Julian was already at the door. holding it open. As we reached the sidewalk. he stepped in front of me. stopping my path. He looked down at me with an intensity that made my breath hitch.
"That was a good start." Julian said. He reached out and brushed a stray hair from my forehead. His touch was electric. "But don't stop at his bank accounts. He took three years of your life. Sarah. You should take everything he ever loved."
"What are you suggesting. Julian."
"I'm suggesting we go to the Miller Tower." He smiled. and for the first time. I saw the dangerous man the world feared. "It's time to meet the board. They are waiting to see if you are a Miller or just another Vanguard victim."
I looked at the black car waiting at the curb. I felt a flicker of fear. but it was buried under a mountain of hurt. I thought of the nights I spent alone in that mansion. waiting for a man who was busy spending my father's money on other women.
"Let's go." I said.
