About

I flew to Las Vegas to surprise my boyfriend of seven years with a proposal, only to overhear him celebrating his new marriage to his intern, Cortney. He had won a poker game and gotten a free marriage certificate as a prize. "What about Amelia?" his friend asked. "Amelia's fine," he scoffed. "She's so devoted, she'd wait another seven years for me if I asked." His words shattered me. I resigned from the company we built together, AG Designs, and left. But Cortney wasn't done. She framed me for leaking company secrets, a lie Gabe instantly believed. He dragged me back to our home, his eyes filled with a rage I'd never seen. "You scheming bitch!" he roared, his hand closing around my throat. "You want to destroy everything I built?!" He beat me with a steel-tipped whip until I was barely conscious, leaving me bleeding and broken. He thought he had crushed me, that I would crawl back. But as I lay there, the pain forged my broken heart into something cold and hard. I escaped, not to run, but to prepare. Now, with the help of a powerful ally, I'm back. And I will make Gabe Carrillo pay for every scar, every tear, and every betrayal. He took my love and my life's work; I'm coming back to take his entire empire.

Chapter 1

Amelia Avila POV:

I stood there, custom-designed wedding bands heavy in my hand, as the celebration from Gabe's VIP lounge crashed into me, shattering seven years of my life. The air in the opulent Las Vegas casino was thick with the scent of whiskey and cheap perfume, a stark contrast to the delicate silver and rose gold I clutched. I had flown in specifically for this, a surprise proposal designed to solidify our future. Our future, I thought, a bitter laugh caught in my throat.

The casino' s latest promotion was a gimmick, but one I thought Gabe would find amusing: win a high-stakes poker game, get a free, legally binding marriage certificate on the spot at their attached chapel. It was Vegas. Anything could happen. I just never imagined it would happen to me. I had our rings, meticulously crafted to interlock, a testament to our partnership, our dreams.

My hand was already reaching for the heavy brass knob of his private VIP suite, a smile ready to bloom on my face. Gabe. My Gabe. Seven years. A lifetime. My heart hammered with anticipation, a sweet, hopeful rhythm. Then I heard their voices. A roar of laughter, then distinct words.

"Can you believe it, Gabe? You actually married Cortney!"

The words hit me like a physical blow. The air rushed out of my lungs. Cortney? His intern? My smile faltered, then died completely. I pressed my ear closer to the cold wood. My blood ran cold, turning to sludge in my veins.

"Lost the bet, man, what can I say?" Gabe's voice, thick with amusement and a hint of intoxication, drifted through the door. "But hey, free marriage certificate, right? And Cortney's... enthusiastic." Another round of raucous laughter. A new, sharper pang twisted in my gut.

Then a familiar voice, Mark, one of Gabe' s oldest friends, cut through the noise. "What about Amelia, though? She's gonna kill you when she finds out."

A silence stretched, just for a moment. My heart leaped, foolishly. Maybe he would defend me. Maybe he would say it was a joke. Maybe he would show an ounce of concern.

"Amelia?" Gabe scoffed. The sound was like a nail scraping down a chalkboard, grating against my very soul. "Oh, Amelia's fine." His tone was dismissive, careless, as if he were talking about a piece of furniture. "She's so devoted, she'd wait another seven years for me if I asked. Probably more. She gets it."

The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. She'd wait another seven years. She gets it. It wasn' t just dismissive. It was contemptuous. It was a complete obliteration of my worth, of our shared history, of everything I had poured into him, into us. My love, my loyalty, my sacrifices-all reduced to a given, something he could take for granted without a second thought.

My fingers, numb and trembling, lost their grip. The custom-designed wedding bands, the symbols of a future that would never be, slipped from my grasp. They hit the plush casino carpet with a soft, metallic chime, a faint, mournful sound lost amidst the boisterous celebration behind the door. I didn't even flinch. My eyes stared blankly at the polished floor, but I saw nothing.

A profound calm, cold and absolute, settled over me. It was the calm of absolute destruction. The Amelia who had loved Gabe, who had built a life around him, was gone. Dissolved into the gaudy, glittering air of this godforsaken city. Seven years. Gone. Just like that.

I turned away from the door, my feet moving as if on autopilot. Each step was deliberate, resolute. No more waiting. No more getting it. I walked out of the casino, past the flashing lights and ringing slots, a ghost among the living. My phone felt heavy in my hand as I navigated to my contacts. I found his name quickly. Benedict Haley. Our families' long-standing business associate. The man whose strategic partnership offer I had politely but firmly rejected just months ago.

The phone rang twice before a deep, resonant voice answered. "Amelia? To what do I owe this unexpected call?" Benedict' s voice was smooth, devoid of surprise, as if he had been expecting me all along.

"Benedict," I said, my voice steady, surprisingly devoid of emotion. It was the voice of a woman who had just had her heart ripped out but refused to acknowledge the pain. "About your offer. The partnership. I accept."

There was a brief pause on the other end, a beat of true surprise. Then, a low, pleased chuckle. "Excellent. The papers are still ready. When can we discuss the details?"

"Tomorrow," I replied, the single word a declaration of war. "First, I have to go tie up some loose ends."

I ended the call, every muscle in my body feeling like it was made of lead. The sun beat down on the Las Vegas strip, but I felt nothing but a chilling resolve. My past was a smoking ruin behind me. The future, with Benedict, was a blank slate. He would be my rescuer, my partner. The man who would help me reclaim what I had lost, and more. My current anguish was a raw, gaping wound, but somewhere deep inside, a tiny, defiant spark flickered. It was the beginning of my reckoning.
