Chapter 1

In Hsey, everyone knew that the Fletcher family raised two beautiful daughters, all in preparation to marry them into wealthy families.

My sister Eunice Fletcher and I had been promised in arranged marriages since childhood. She was to marry into the Hardy family, and I into the Higgins family.

In my previous life, Henrik Hardy, the Hardy family's son, was hit by a car and became a vegetative patient, bedridden for all his life. Just three months after Eunice married into the Hardy family, they went bankrupt, and my sister ended up homeless.

This was because of the Fletcher family's strict rule. If a married daughter couldn't bring benefits to her birth family, she would have to face the consequences herself.

I once heard my mother say that my aunt died tragically on the street because she failed to bring any advantage to her natal family after getting married.

Eunice, desperate to live, once came to me and begged me to help her connect with Waylon Higgins, the Higgins family's son, so she could become his mistress.

"Margot, we grew up together and shared everything. It's just a man, what's the harm in letting me have him?"

I refused. Bearing in mind the sisterly bond we'd shared for years, I couldn't bring myself to push her into the pit of fire that was the Higgins family.

But she turned around and framed me, falsely accusing me of killing Henrik. In that past life, I ended up imprisoned and nearly starved to death.

Opening my eyes once more, I looked at the familiar surroundings and familiar faces before me.

Waylon had filled our living room with betrothal gifts. He looked presentable and sincere, but behind those eyes hid something deeply sinister.

Eunice had deliberately worn a seductive red spaghetti-strap dress. With her alluring looks and flawless makeup, she showed no regard for my dignity as she kissed Waylon while clinging to his arm. "Waylon, marry me. I'm way more fun than Margot."

Her words awakened Waylon's twisted desires. He loved nothing more than tormenting interesting persons until they became dull and broken.

In my past life, because I was dull and lifeless, Waylon often forced me to take all kinds of strange medicines.

The memory alone sent a chill down my spine.

I stared nervously at Waylon, waiting for his reaction.

He curled his lips into a smile, wrapped his arm around Eunice's waist, and replied, "Sure, we'll get married in a week."

Eunice walked up to me, looking all innocent. "Margot, you're not angry, are you?"

I could barely hold back my grin. This was such a stroke of luck! I had no idea why, after my reborn, Eunice would suddenly choose to marry Waylon on her own.

I pinched my thigh, feeling the pain. This was real! I said with a smile, "Sealed deal. Best of luck."

Those two deserved each other. Scumbag and cheapskate. Let them ruin each other's lives forever.

Eunice didn't expect my reaction. She thought I was too heartbroken and tried to remind me of something. "Margot, you'll have to marry into the Hardy family instead."

I braced myself. Marrying someone in a coma was still better than ending up with a psycho.

In this life, I'd rather be a rich widow. I had more money than I could spend, and I could just sit back and watch Eunice walk herself into ruin.

My parents knew about the arrangement and had no objections. Both daughters were getting married on the same day anyway.

Eunice spent the past few days trying on wedding dresses and picking out household items for after the wedding.

I told her, "Waylon likes things that are fun. Wear a lot on the wedding night. Let him peel it off piece by piece. That'll really spice things up."

She shot me a vicious glare and warned me not to set my sights on Waylon.

See? No amount of good advice could save someone who was already doomed.

I told her to wear more layers, or she might end up dead under Waylon's salt-soaked whip on their wedding night.

The closer the wedding date got, the more ostentatious the Higgins family's preparations for marrying Eunice became. It was even more extravagant than what they did in my past life. There were at least a hundred luxury cars in the bridal convoy.

From our house to the hotel, they laid out red carpet the whole way just to make sure Eunice's feet wouldn't touch a speck of dirt.

Eunice even had three rings on her fingers, each one bigger than the last. Her necklace? A pink diamond polished for a month straight.

Eunice kept showing off in front of me, posting all over social media for everyone to see.

"Margot, I'm so sorry. I don't know why Mr. Higgins chose to leave you for me. It's all my fault."

"Margot, if you truly want Mr. Higgins, I'm willing to go to him and call off the engagement. Please don't hate me."

"Margot, I heard the Hardy family's gifts were plain and cheap. It's all my fault."

Hearing Eunice's sweet yet malicious words, I couldn't help but laugh.

Just enjoy your happiness while it lasted.

The higher you jumped then, the harder you would fall later.

The Hardy family sent someone over, seemingly to question my parents about the sudden change of bride.

It was clear the Hardy family was furious, but since the Higgins family held great power in Eslesa, no one dared offend them, and the Hardy family could only back down.

When the Hardy couple came to see me, there was pain in their eyes. "Margot, do you truly want to marry our son Henrik?"

I nodded, "I do."

They said there were three great joys for women, promotion, a raise, and the death of a husband.

Being in a vegetative state was no different from being dead. I would never have to worry about food or money again.

Kayla Hardy, Henrik's mother, had her eyes reddened as she took out a vibrant green jade bracelet from her bag and handed it to me. "Take this bracelet. I now see you as my daughter-in-law."

I had never seen Eunice wear this bracelet in my previous life.

But it looked very expensive.

"Thank you, Mrs. Hardy."

In the days that followed, my parents treated me like I was invisible. But I didn't have much affection for this family anyway.

The night before the wedding.
