Sonia's eyes blazed. "Because I know one day, you'll fight back, Emily. So I'm ending this now-before you become a threat."
"Enough of the sob story. Die, Emily!" Sonia lunged with the knife.
Emily caught her wrist just in time. They struggled, the blade trembling between them.
Suddenly, their parents burst into the room.
"Sonia!" their mother screamed.
Startled, Sonia's hand slipped-driving the knife into her own side. She collapsed, gasping, just as their parents reached them.
"Emily!" Sonia cried out weakly, feigning pain. "I never thought... my own sister would want me dead."
"Dad, it wasn't me!" Emily pleaded, eyes wide with panic. "I would never hurt her. Please believe me!"
"You evil girl!" their mother spat, eyes blazing with fury. She shoved Emily violently. Emily tumbled down the stairs, her head hitting the edge of a step. Blood pooled beneath her as her vision blurred.
Sonia whimpered from the floor. "Mom... don't blame her. It's my fault. I took everything from her-her name, her place in this family. She must be angry."
She gave a subtle, wicked smirk.
"You wicked child!" their mother hissed, rushing to Sonia's side. "I hate that you are my daughter!"
"You should've never come back here," Emily's older brother added coldly. "You bring nothing but pain."
Lying on the cold floor, blood seeping from her head, Emily sobbed. "Why? Why am I always the one suffering? I'm your daughter too. Why, Mother?"
"Leave that evil child!" her mother snapped. "Sonia is bleeding out. We have to get her to the hospital."
They left Emily behind, crumpled on the floor, as they rushed Sonia to the car.
Moments later, the door opened again-and Emily's heart stirred faintly with hope.
"Williams..." she gasped, her fiancé-her first love-stepped into view. "Help me... Please, I don't want to die..."
Williams looked down at her, expressionless. Then a cruel smile curved his lips.
"You deserve to die, Emily," he said. "You're only the Zu heiress by mistake. If it weren't for that, I'd be with the woman I truly love-Sonia."
Her heart shattered.
"Why is everyone I love turning against me?" she whispered.
"Let me help ease your pain," he said softly, picking up a table knife.
"No-" Emily began, but it was too late.
He plunged it into her chest.
"Aaah!" she screamed, agony tearing through her as her blood stained the floor.
Leaning in close, Williams whispered, "Let me tell you a secret before you die. The one who truly loved you, who protected you in the shadows, wasn't me. It was Anthony Wellington-the richest man in New York. The one you pushed away... was the one keeping you safe."
Her eyes widened in disbelief. "How...?"
"You killed him," Williams smirked. "Ask him when you get to hell."
He twisted the blade and stabbed her again.
"If I ever get a second chance..." she gasped, "I'll rewrite my story..."
Then everything went dark
Meanwhile, in the car-
"Mum, I'm in pain," Sonia moaned. "I feel like I'm losing too much blood. Tell Harry to drive faster..."
"Harry, step on it!" their mother cried. "I can't lose my daughter-she's the star of this family!"
They reached the hospital. Harry rushed inside with Sonia in his arms, shouting, "Doctor! Please, help! My sister is bleeding out!"
"Bring her in. Quickly," the doctor said, leading them to the emergency room.
"If anything happens to Sonia, I swear I'll kill that evil girl," their father muttered.
"Calm down, Dad," Harry said. "She's strong. She'll be okay. She has to be."
Minutes later, the doctor emerged.
"Doctor!" they chorused, rushing to him.
"She's stable," the doctor said. "The wound missed all vital organs. She's asleep now, but she'll wake up soon."
"Thank God," their mother breathed.
"Can we see her?" Harry asked.
"Yes, but don't disturb her rest."
They walked quietly into the room.
"My precious girl," Emily's mother whispered, stroking Sonia's face. "I'm so glad you're safe."
Suddenly, Bing! Bing! Bing!-Emily's father's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and scoffed. "Why is that ungrateful girl calling me?" He rejected the call.
It rang again. And again. Finally, he picked up. "Emily, what-?"
He froze.
"What do you mean... she's dead?" he whispered.
He ended the call and turned to the others. "I'm going home. The maid said Emily's... dead."
"How?" his wife asked, guilt flickering across her face. "She only had a small head wound..."
"Maybe it's another one of her tricks," Harry said.
"No maid would risk her job for that girl," their mother murmured, pale.
Their father left in a hurry.
A few hours later, Emily's body was laid to rest.
"If only I'd raised you myself, you wouldn't have been so worthless," her mother said coldly.
"I wish you were never my sister," her brother muttered.
"Finally," William whispered with a smile, "Sonia is mine."
"Now everything belongs to me," Sonia said, her lips curling in victory. "The love. The wealth. Everything."
But she was wrong.
Because Emily's story... was only just beginning.
