My twin brother Alex found his mate on our seventeenth birthday. Alex is the complete opposite of me, he is over six feet tall, he is very toned, he has sandy hair and the most beautiful hazel eyes. His wolf is larger than the other wolves but not as large as an alphas, and he is brown. Whereas I am five seven in height somehow I'm stronger than the she wolves who have mates, all wolves are stronger than any human even the lower ranks.
I do however have a secret, one I keep even from my twin which I usually tell everything. I can sometimes make things happen, I can't really explain it, but when I was younger, I started a fire, well I actually started a bunch of fires. I'm not sure how I did it, I also healed one of the pups who were injured in the woods. I have black hair with a tint of royal blue, and my eyes are a deep blue. My wolf is black and also with a blue tint, only she's as big as an alphas. When I shift I'm as big as my dad's wolf Rex, no one knows why, though I'm not even the next alpha for our pack.
She-wolves can't be an alpha, if an alpha has no sons the daughter's mate will be the next alpha, which is typically a bata or another alphas younger son. Although rare, an Omega she-wolf can be mated to an alpha, an omega werewolf has never been mated into the higher positions. What I'm saying is a low rank she-wolf can become Luna, but a low rank male can not become alpha.
Alex is the next Alpha of our pack so he trains intensively, his wife is the best sister you could ask for, she's the daughter of an alpha of a neighboring pack. She was sent to other packs to find her mate, our pack was the first she visited and it happened to be on our birthday.
Alex was in my room asking me to help him decide between a nice shirt and tie, or jeans and a T, when he started acting weird he walked out my room sniffing the air, me tailing behind him excitedly. She was in the hallway, with the same weird lovesick expression on her face, I expected him to be like 'MINE' or 'MATE' but all he said was 'happy birthday to me'.
He walked right over to her and said, 'I Alexander Darkmoon accept you as my future luna and mate.' She started blushing and said "'Do you think I can reject you while you're shirtless and I'm drooling?' Then she looked over at me, and back to him and I only noticed then that I was only in my undergarments, because Alex rudely barged into my room to ask me a stupid question. Tears began to appear in her eyes and she stepped back and asked 'Did I interrupt something?' My brother, the confused idiot, just stared at her like she was speaking a different language.
I had to give him the extra push. 'I'm Lex, twin sister to your new mate, maybe you can help him decide shirt and tie or jeans and T to the party, that way I can get back to getting dressed in peace.' She started laughing, picked the jeans then accepted my brother back.
My dad always put the pack first, except after my mother died I heard that he locked himself away from everyone, and that his wolf would go on a rampage, but I really don't remember that time. I was very young and going through an emotional stage in life, things kept catching fire around me. Regardless of that dark period in our lives, I'd like to think my dad is an honorable man. Sometimes I'm relieved I don't have a mate, my brother and I know the aftermath of losing a mate. When our mom died it hurt everyone, but it almost killed our dad too. The only thing that kept him going was raising us, and running his pack.
I don't want to ever feel that kind of pain, I don't want to set myself up for failure just because my mate can't protect themselves. I also don't want to put my Mate in the same position because I couldn't protect myself, it scares me if I'm being honest. As wonderful as it would be to feel the pull, the sparks, the amazing connection that comes with having a mate, I'm not sure I'm really ever going to be ready for that kind of pain.
The Mate bond is stronger than nearly anything in the world, from what I hear it's intensifying before you mark your mate but afterwards it's this unbreakable bond. Well almost unbreakable, death is of course the only exception. We don't really have many rejections, there's never been a second chance mate, one soul to another is all you get, If you're ungrateful for what the moon Goddess blesses you with, then why would you be gifted another?
Humans can only assume that they are 'in love', however shifters know and nearly instantly love their mate, our wolves make sure of it. There are rare occasions when your wolf conceals the bond from the human side until they feel you are ready to accept your mate. That normally only happens when you've been through too much trauma. You will need to learn to open your heart and trust before they put you in a situation where you might reject their mate.
Even though that's only a myth, we have no proof it ever happened, it was just told to us in history by the elders. When we lose our mate it's unbearable, and even some die from what humans would consider a 'broken heart' when they lose their mate. Like I said sometimes I'm glad not to have found mine, other times I question if I even have a mate out there, the only reason it took Alex so long to find his is because Amilia hadn't had her first full transformation she found Alex a week after she shifted.
As happy as I was for them, and still am, I feel like the mating call just skipped me, like I'm never going to find my mate. I did travel to other packs a few years ago, but my father summoned me home, I was on my way to King Kaden's Kingdom, he was a newly crowned king at the time. My father said that my mother was from the same pack as the former queen. I was hoping at that time to see if she knew my mother, maybe they were friends.
Some packs sell their unmated off for resources or alliances, that usually happens because their mate died, and always with both sides in complete agreement. We've never done that here though, at the rate our land is going I'm surprised we haven't resorted to that. My dad had an offer a few years ago to gain a wife that also lost her mate, but before he could give an answer the other pack was slaughtered by another pack.
King Kaden is the Alpha of the largest and strongest pack ever known. His name puts fear in the hearts of almost everyone, one thing I know to be true is I never want to meet him. My father was relieved when I made it home and didn't go into the King's territory at that time. I really hope my mate isn't in his territory or I'll never find him.
Although I hear Kaden is very good looking, I also hear he only sleeps with the human women of his kingdom. Maybe he doesn't want children, because humans can't bear a child to a shifter. The few that have gotten pregnant died, not only the women but the unborn children too, even with the help from the mages they still die. Some even come out deformed, a cross between a wolf and a human, but none of record came out to the womb with a heartbeat.
Most kingdoms forbid mix breeding, it keeps both parties safe and it also helps protect our secret. About a hundred years ago there was a group called hunters, they were humans that found out about us and learned all kinds of skills to kill us, they had brands on them, but a powerful She-wolf destroyed them all, with the help of a powerful mage. It's rumored that one day the hunters brand will be reawakened, and they will try to finish what their ancestors failed to do years ago, wipe out all of the shifter kind. My pack are not fighters, so I'm not sure many packs will want to align with us if that time ever really comes.
