The final memory of my past life was a cold, digital execution. I watched David Chen, my ex-fiancé, on a hundred-foot screen at his company' s IPO launch, alive and destroying me. "Sarah Miller hacked my systems," he' d declared, pulling his new girlfriend, Emily, close. "She tried to con my grieving family and ruin Emily' s reputation." The fallout was immediate: blacklisted, our family' s digital forensics firm raided, our life' s work wiped clean. He' d sneered, "If you can' t bring back my reputation, you' ll pay." I paid. We all did. Until now. The insistent ding-dong of my doorbell cut through the silence, bringing me back to October 12th. It was the day after David Chen was reported dead, the day his parents had come seeking my help. Last time, I' d opened that door, taken their money, accepted their false promises, and poured my soul into his shattered laptop, only for him to rise from the grave to crucify me. But this time, I knew where that path led. I pressed my face against the cool wood, my voice steady. "Go away." Mrs. Chen's muffled plea followed: "Sarah, please! It's about David. We need your help." I' d lied: "No one can truly recover data from a physically destroyed device." The silence on the other side thickened with their disbelief, just before the lock on my door clicked. He was here. Already. The door swung open, revealing David Chen, perfectly alive, his charismatic smile a cruel slash. "See, Mom, Dad? I told you she was hiding something," he said, his eyes locking onto mine, a chilling, possessive fire in them. "She knew I wasn't dead." Emily slipped in behind him, a picture of deceptive innocence. He picked up my brother' s locket, a symbol of my family, and with a flick of his wrist, tossed it out the window. "You're a monster," I whispered. "No," he said, "I'm a survivor. You've had your little rebirth, your second chance. Fine. Let's see what you do with it." He knew. He was acknowledging it, and my blood ran cold. He thought he had won, confining me to this digital graveyard. But he was wrong. He hadn't just confined me. He had given me a target.

Introduction

The final memory of my past life was a cold, digital execution.

I watched David Chen, my ex-fiancé, on a hundred-foot screen at his company' s IPO launch, alive and destroying me.

"Sarah Miller hacked my systems," he' d declared, pulling his new girlfriend, Emily, close. "She tried to con my grieving family and ruin Emily' s reputation."

The fallout was immediate: blacklisted, our family' s digital forensics firm raided, our life' s work wiped clean.

He' d sneered, "If you can' t bring back my reputation, you' ll pay."

I paid. We all did.

"Go away."

Mrs. Chen's muffled plea followed: "Sarah, please! It's about David. We need your help."

I' d lied: "No one can truly recover data from a physically destroyed device."

The silence on the other side thickened with their disbelief, just before the lock on my door clicked.

He was here. Already.

The door swung open, revealing David Chen, perfectly alive, his charismatic smile a cruel slash.

"See, Mom, Dad? I told you she was hiding something," he said, his eyes locking onto mine, a chilling, possessive fire in them. "She knew I wasn't dead."

Emily slipped in behind him, a picture of deceptive innocence.

He picked up my brother' s locket, a symbol of my family, and with a flick of his wrist, tossed it out the window.

"You're a monster," I whispered.

"No," he said, "I'm a survivor. You've had your little rebirth, your second chance. Fine. Let's see what you do with it."

He knew. He was acknowledging it, and my blood ran cold.

He thought he had won, confining me to this digital graveyard.

But he was wrong. He hadn't just confined me. He had given me a target.

Reclaiming My Life, Redefining Love

Short stories Gavin

I opened my eyes to a sterile hospital room after three years in a coma, a miracle, Dr. Reed called me. My memory, a slow agonizing puzzle, was finally whole. I remembered everything. The first person I saw wasn' t my fiancé, Mark. It was my old professor, Dr. Reed, holding my hand, her face a mix of relief and concern. Mark Harrison was waiting at the entrance of our house, looking older, his face etched with ambition, not grief. He didn' t rush to hug me, didn' t even smile. "Ava," he said, his voice flat. "You're back." Then she emerged: Chloe Davis, my old rival, now standing on my doorstep with a triumphant smile, her arm wrapped around Mark' s. On her wrist, my patented smartwatch gleamed. "Chloe has been a rock for me," Mark announced, looking at her with practiced adoration. "We're engaged." A month after my car crash – a supposed accident – he was engaged. A month after that, her company acquired a crucial patent from my firm. From inside, Spark, my AI companion, spoke. Its warm, inquisitive voice now clipped, devoted to Chloe. My home, stripped of my art, my books, everything that was me. "Chloe has taken over the company and our lives," Mark snarled, his patience gone. "You'll just have to accept it." He expected tears, but I felt only relief. The fog was gone. I saw him for what he was. "Okay," I said, my voice calm and even. "I accept it." He stared, confused. I was not the woman he thought he had destroyed. My purpose here wasn't to reclaim a lost love, but my life's work. Then came the child' s wail. Chloe rushed out, blaming my "legacy systems" for a scratch on a boy named Alex. "It wasn't a malfunction," I stated, pointing to the error log. "The command came from your smartwatch, Chloe. You probably held Alex's arm just a little too close to it." Her face went pale, then contorted with manufactured fear for Mark' s benefit. "You are unbelievable," Mark spat, blocking my path. "Something you could never give me." "I want access to Spark," I demanded. "I am the creator." "You have no rights!" he yelled. "Spark is not your company's property, Mark," I replied, my voice dangerously low. "Spark is mine." He knew that wasn' t an empty threat. He knew what I was capable of.

Worthless No More: A Mother's Triumph

Short stories Gavin

The stale coffee and expensive cologne was a mix I knew all too well-my boyfriend, Mark, was in a good mood, which always meant he wanted something from me. I was deep in the code of my indie game, my passion project, a world that was entirely mine. Then he dropped the bombshell: a "strategic networking event" with his "business visionary" childhood friend, Brittany, whom he clearly admired far more than me. My heart sank as he waved away my concerns about overdue rent and bills-money I' d given him to pay. Not for the first time, he dismissed my "pixels and stories" as not "real business," just as he had dismissed every cent I' d poured into his failing startup. The true blow landed when he sneered, "It's no wonder you can't even do the one thing a woman is supposed to do right. You can't even get pregnant. What good are you?" After a year of desperate hopes and private pain, his words cut me to my core. He was right there, dismissing my worth in the most cruel way imaginable, while spending my earnings to impress someone else. In that moment, everything shifted. I watched him walk out, slamming the door, demanding I leave my apartment-the one I paid for. I was broken, homeless, and worthless, just as he said. But as I looked across the courtyard at my quiet neighbor, Liam' s, light, a flicker of defiance sparked. I had nowhere else to go, but I knew I couldn't stay. That night, I knocked on a stranger's door, ready to reclaim my life, piece by painful piece.

His Heartless Plan, Her Bitter End

Short stories Gavin

For three years, I painted by day and worked dead-end jobs by night, all to fund my brilliant musician husband, David, battling a rare illness. My latest sacrifice was night shifts at the Sterling Art Gallery-dangerous, but it paid for his experimental treatments. Then, a laugh drifted from a private room, strong and vibrant, just like David's, but not the weak one I knew. "You should have seen her face, Em," he chuckled, "She actually believes I need that new 'serum' from Switzerland. Another fifty grand, just like that." My world shattered as Emily, his childhood friend, replied, "Three years of this, and she still thinks you're a poor, dying musician." He gloated about this "brilliant plan" to exploit me, calling marrying me his "biggest mistake," all while planning to use our unborn child as his "ticket out." Before I could process the monstrous truth, the gallery was raided; my mother, bringing me soup, was brutally thrown, her head striking a pedestal. David and Emily, seeing everything from their sleek black car, simply drove away, leaving me and my dying mother. He arrived at the hospital later, weaving a masterful performance of a worried husband. As he reached for my hand, the nurse delivered the fatal blow: my mother was gone. Then Emily waltzed in, lilies in hand, cooing fake sympathy before flaunting a photo of her and David, with a caption solidifying their "true love." A rich male friend tossed hundreds onto my blanket, "For your trouble. Should be enough to cover a funeral for whatever working-class family you came from." My grief calcified into icy rage. "Assault, robbery, and accessory to murder," I stated calmly, "And you know, it's amazing what a security camera in a high-end gallery can pick up. Even the sound. I'm sure the police will be very interested in the recording of my husband and his mistress discussing three years of felony fraud just before the 'robbery' happened." Silence fell. He had underestimated me. I lost everything-my mother, my husband, my baby that would never be. But in losing everything, I had nothing left to fear. "You want me to sell my grandmother's apartment? Fine. But not for us. For me. You will transfer five hundred thousand dollars into my personal bank account. Today." I hung up, laying a trap.

I poured my heart and genius into building InnovateTech, a billion-dollar empire, and into building Liam, the man I loved, my co-founder and fiancé. The shock was a physical demolition, leaving a vacuum where my heart used to be. Every memory, every promise, every dream turned to ash as I heard their laughter. Humiliated, betrayed, and with nothing left to lose, I made a desperate, wild choice: I would marry the reclusive billionaire, Mark, a man rumored to be a "freak," to save my family and myself. Liam confronted me, his face twisted with disbelief and rage. "You' re marrying Mark? The city' s freak? Are you insane?" he spat. I looked at him, feeling nothing but a vast, cold emptiness, the pain having burned away into steel. "Yes," I said, my voice steady. "I am." He saw a stranger, a loyal subject who had walked away, and in that moment, I knew I had made the right choice.
