Chapter 1 MEETING LUNA EVELYN

The kingdom of Venturia lay clear in a soft, deeply ash glow of the moon. The gardens were alive, stretched perfectly under the moonlight, while at another side, the winds made a noise of tale. This werewolf kingdom saw a blend of nature and the supernatural, the werewolf packs wandering around in line with the ancient patterns carried in the whispers of the Moon Goddess.

I walked along the path that ran in the middle of the trees. Above me, they stood like sentinels, their branches making another noise in the winds. The way was already rugged and tired-looking; the very marks on the ground had to have been laid by the feet of pack members countless times before I had arrived. Silver shafts of moonlight were filtering down through the leaves in the midst of dancing shadows that made an eerie kind of form with them.

Out of the deepest darkness appeared Luna Evelyn. Her eyes, filled with deep wisdom and an undercurrent of worry, locked on mine. "There are problems about which you will have no knowledge now, Sophia, that your road to becoming Luna must entail," she said solemnly.

A shiver disturbed me, running down my spine. "What do you mean exactly?" I hardly breathed, asking.

"Err, you have to find someone before Aria does," she said, her gaze going sharp through my eyes.

"Who?" I kept asking, but she just shook her head.

"You'll know when you find them. Just be careful, Sophia." She pressed. "Aria won't even wait to use them against you."

I nodded with rising determination. Find Aria, the unknown, whatever it might take.

Standing there before Evelyn, her words lingered commandingly. "Aria's influence has become known across the land, Sophia. Within the pack, she is supported, whispering doubts about your worthiness to lead."

Suddenly, a flash of rage surfaced, now cementing my resolve. "I will prove her wrong," I stated firmly.

Evelyn became more serious and her face showed it. "And it's not only about you, Sophia. Aria's plans are not just what you think; she is trying to catch up with the fears and divisions of the pack."

Instantly, a noise came from the nearby bushes, catching our attention. We shared a wary glance, high on alert. "What was that?" I whispered.

Evelyn's gaze swept the entire territory: "I am not quite sure, but let's get back to the den. We cannot take any chances."

As we were about to leave, I sighted a figure just around a corner of the trees. Pins and needles were running down my spine. "Evelyn, look," I whispered, my eyes still focused on the figure.

But it was gone, swallowed by the dark. Evelyn grabbed my arm tightly. Let's go now. We have to notify the Alpha Guard immediately.

We marched back in haste to the pack's den, our senses stretched to the limit. Yet, there was a strange feeling of being watched, and I thought that Aria's spread was faster than ever.

As we approached the den, a strange wolf scent hit me, an unknown one not identified by my wolf. His senses went into high alert; it was all wrong.

Inside the den, I saw several wolves near the entrance, urgently conversing in hushed tones. Evelyn furrowed her brows. "What's really happening?" she asked one of the pack members.

"It's Charlie," came the response, almost a whisper. "She's been behaving so strangely, and some of the pack members are now getting suspicious."

A deep feeling went into my belly. Charlie was one of my close friends, and to think that she might be an adherent of Aria's schemes really made me uneasy. "What are you really trying to say?"The possibilities flooded through my mind.

The pack member waited some time. "She's been seen talking to some of the outsiders, and some of the pack members think she might be working with Aria."

The expression on Evelyn's face changed and I saw that she was serious. "You know what? We have to talk to Charlie, now. Sophia, follow me."

We hurried off to Charlie's quarters, going full alert. The more we got close to it, the more the heaviness of the feelings I had weighed on me. What were we going to find? Was Charlie a co-conspirator with Aria, or was there something totally different?

Upon reaching Charlie's quarters, we found her pacing wildly, eyes full of worry. "What's really wrong?" she asked, almost trembling for fear.

Evelyn's eyes locked onto hers. "We've heard rumors, Charlie. About you and Aria. Tell us the truth."

Charlie's eyes passed between us, and for a moment, I thought I saw a face of fear. But then, the tone of her voice also changed, and it sent shivers down my spine.

"Hmm..." I slurred my words. "What..."

I kept shut and rather ruminated on Charlie's determined expression, my mind racing with questions. What had Aria promised her? And why was Charlie so willing to take risks for this strange protection?

"Charlie, think about what you're saying," I urged, my tone firm. "Aria's not trustworthy. She's using her deceitful schemes to achieve what she wants. We can't just go along with her."

Charlie's gaze faded, and for a moment I saw a face of doubt. Afterwards, her appearance brought back into place, though, and she shook her head. "You don't understand, Sophia. You're not thinking of the big picture. Aria's offer is our only hope for survival."

I was upset and worried. Charlie was a close friend of mine, and the possibility of her being manipulated by Aria's promises scared me. What if Charlie got hurt? What if Aria was using her for her own purposes?

"Charlie, no..." I pleaded, trying to let her agree with me. "Don't do this. Let's go speak with Evelyn and bring up a strategy to protect our pack together."

But Charlie proved stubborn, and she shoved me aside. "It's too late, Sophia. I've already made up my mind. And I won't go against it.".

I watched Charlie leave and a strange feeling settled in the bottom of my stomach instantly. I knew I had to act quickly before whatever harm Charlie's actions could bring were done. I considered following her, but something warned me that wouldn't be effective. Instead, I had to plot, and quickly.

As I was thinking about the next step-what to do again, I received a message that sent chills down my spine. "See me at the old sycamore tree at midnight. Come alone." There was no other hint attached to the message from my view, but I was certain whose it was. Aria's. And I felt as if my life were now going to change forever. Then I heard footsteps behind me. I turned to check who it was and saw him right then.
