Chapter 4 Do You Want To Take A Shower

Janet's POV:

With a frown, my eyes intently gazed at Ethan's watch. I was taken aback.

"It's a cheap knockoff gifted to me by one of my friends. I wear it only on special occasions. I didn't expect you to have such a discerning eye," Ethan whispered in my ear.

He took his watch off and put it in his pocket.

"It looks real enough." There was a smile on my face as I took two steps back to hide the burning in my ears.

Ethan was so close that I could feel his breath on my cheek.

It must not be surprising for a man like him to know of someone who sold counterfeits.

Fortunately, his watch was fake. I was scared to death. I was worried that Ethan had done something unspeakable just to get such an expensive watch.

"The groom is here. Why hasn't the wedding started yet?" Jocelyn asked in a soft voice.

Hooking her arm into Steve's, she approached us with a bright smile on her face. "The groom has finally arrived. I think it's time to introduce the two of you. This is Steve, the eldest son of the Carter family. We are family now. It's just proper that we are acquainted with each other."

Steve lowered his head. For some reason, he could not lay his eyes on me.

The feelings that I once had for Steve were no longer there. I pretended not to know him and said, "Yeah. I guess we should all meet each other. But Steve, I do hope you're still with my sister next time we meet."

There was an unfathomable look on Steve's face as he looked at me.

Embarrassment was evident on Jocelyn's face. She glared at me and immediately changed the topic. "Hey, if you ever find the need for it, I can introduce Ethan to the Carter family. Maybe that would help him find a job. Even if he does not know how to do technical work, I guess he can do chores like mopping the floor and cleaning the toilet. After all, it's better to have a real job than just roaming around idly."

Stealthily, I took a glance at Ethan. Ethan did not seem to care about Jocelyn's attempt to humiliate him. As a matter of fact, there was even a smile on his face. "You don't have to. I'm actually quite used to roaming around."

"Well... Alright, then." Without another word, Jocelyn sulkily returned to her seat with Steve. Perhaps, it was because she did not get her way.

Finally, the priest arrived and the wedding ceremony dragged along quite hastily.

When all of the guests had gone, Ethan took me to a house near the chapel.

It was old, small, and quite shabby if I do say so myself. There weren't a lot of things inside except for the things that were obviously purchased for the wedding. Ethan was a tall man. The space seemed even smaller after he came in.

He must be really poor.

"Well... This is my home. Make do with it first," Ethan said. His tone was neutral. He did not seem to be embarrassed about his living situation at all.

"Hmm... It is a little small but it's neat. Besides, there's more than enough space for the two of us," I replied.

It was the truth. Although the house was old and shabby, I could tell that it was well-maintained. Both the yard and the house looked tidy. However, it did not appear as if someone actually resided there.

As my eyes travelled around the house, I caught glimpse of Ethan taking his jacket off and hanging it over a wooden chair. With his slender fingers, he started unbuttoning his white shirt. I could clearly see the tightness of his muscles underneath the flimsy cloth of his shirt. He had a taut body, probably because of the working out he did all year round.

Suddenly, Ethan looked my way. When our eyes met, he stopped what he was doing and walked up to me. There was a playful smile on his face as he said, "You've been busy all day. Do you want to take a shower first?"
